Forget the alarm clock and wake up to the ratatat of a woodpecker getting breakfast.

Avoid generic motel rooms and complete your Frontenac adventure by camping under the stars. “Backcountry” or “interior” camping involves carrying everything you need on your back and hiking or paddling to a secluded campsite. “Car camping” involves pitching your tent very close to your parked vehicle, usually with other campers nearby.

For the uninitiated, car camping can be a wonderful nature experience with a few creature comforts – like running water and flush toilets – nearby. Whichever style you prefer, there are lots of options for camping in Frontenac.

Frontenac Parklands

Crotch Lake

The campsites and roadways that make up Frontenac Parklands provide unique opportunities for wilderness camping, week-long canoekayak trips, family picnics, fishing expeditions, and much more. The Parklands are managed and maintained by North Frontenac Township on provincially administered crown lands. They have been enjoyed by nature enthusiasts for decades.

Early in the 2000’s the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources decided they no longer wanted to manage the 58 kilometres of roadway that provide access to the 184 campsites on 12 linked Canadian Shield Lakes on the Mississippi River headwaters that make up this wilderness playground. They offered it up to North Frontenac Township to manage.

The township wanted to ensure that some of the most accessible backcountry opportunities in Eastern Ontario were available to their own residents and visitors, and needing to generate revenue to cover the maintenance costs, they set up Frontenac Parklands and began collecting nominal road and camping fees for the Parklands. Campsites cost $22.50 per night for up to 6 people, and the access road fee ($9.50 for one day) is included.

In 2007, a summer resident of the township proposed setting up an online booking system to make the sites easier to access for everyone, and also suggested that a name change for the program, which was then called the Crown Land Access Program, would be beneficial.

Frontenac Parklands was born.

Explore Corey Klatt manages the parklands for the township, and he keeps a close eye on the bookings, which have grown steadily over the years.

“Booking for the season starts on November 1st. That's always a busy day because people who are familiar with the sites want to snap up their favourites right away, especially for summer weekends, but there are always spots available at northfrontenacparklands.com."

One of spectacular sections of the parklands includes: Schooner Lake, Fortune Lake, and Round Schooner Lake.

Visitors to these lakes soon realize they are in the highlands. They feature sheer granite cliffs, and clear, deep lakes that are home to a variety of fish species including lake trout. The landscape is unusual and rare enough to have been identified as an area of natural and scientific interest by the Province of Ontario.

In fact, one enthusiatic blogger says that their idea of a prime Frontenac Parklands site

includes privacy, enough open space for a good breeze, and the essential element, a good diving rock into the clear water of the lake.

In addition to paddling, fishing, and swimming, there is a hiking trail. The Schooner Trail is a newly marked hiking trail through natural forests, featuring many large boulders, a high elevation scenic jaunt, and a steep limestone hillside, all on the west shore of Long Schooner Lake.

The trail heads north from the end of Schooner Road, then zig-zags northwest up the "The Climb", and swings back east along the "Upper Ridge Walk" toward Long Schooner Lake.

The trail finishes with a quick and steep descent to a nice mellow lakeside walk along Long Schooner Lake, and it then meets back at the beginning of the trail. The entire loop is approximately 3 kilometers, and covers just over 100 meters of elevation.

by Carolyn Bonta Frontenac Provincial Park is our region’s most popular all-season outdoor destination, and is especially inviting in the fall. There are many reasons to enjoy a hike, paddle, or backcountry camping trip at this time of year, such as cooler days, no biting insects, colourful leaves… and the Frontenac Challenge.

The Frontenac Challenge is the park’s most celebrated event of the year. The premise is simple: Hike all of the park’s 11 main trail loops in the months of September and October.

Riding the Rail Trails

Frontenac County was once home to numerous railways travelling to and from destinations across Eastern Ontario.

In recent years, some of the former rail lines have been revived as multi-use trails, re-connecting the former rail communities and activating tourist adventures across the region.

One such “rail-trail”, The Frontenac K&P Trail, travels north-south through the Frontenac region, forming a trail spine through many villages and several townships.

The K&P is host to many uses including hiking, cycling, horseback riding and in the winter, snowmobile use. You can even find ATVs along the northern sections, starting near the village of Verona.

The name K&P is inherited from the former Kingston and Pembroke Railway, which is the corridor along which the K&P Trail travels 180 km north from downtown Kingston through Sharbot Lake to Calabogie and the Ottawa Valley. Here, trail tourists can connect to the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail, a 296 km multi-use rail-trail extending from Mattawa south to Smiths Falls.

Explore to a stone dust hard-packed passage lined with trees as it ducks under Highway 401 and into Frontenac County. From here, cyclists have an uncomplicated 75-kilometre pedal from Kingston to Sharbot Lake. Wildlife lovers should carry cameras for the ducks, geese, birds and beavers thriving in wetland stretches of this trail and considering the remoteness of the trail, you’ll likely want to pack snacks too. If shorter trips are on the menu, trailheads can also be found in Harrowsmith, Hartington, Verona, and Tichborne.

After arriving in Sharbot Lake, spend the night at Rockhill B&B, swim at Oso Beach or enjoy dinner and live music at the Crossings Pub. The more adventurous trail traveller might venture north of Sharbot Lake, where the K&P is more remote, just as beautiful, and the surface provides more of a “rock and roll” experience, better suited for the confident gravel or mountain bike rider who prefers a white-knuckle experience. However, this section is well travelled and generally passable on an ATV. Sharbot Lake is also where the Tay-Havelock rail-trail intersects with the K&P route. This well-used east-west trail connects Sharbot Lake to communities like Arden, Mountain Grove, Maberly and Perth.

Also intersecting the K&P Trail to the south is the 104 km Cataraqui Trail, an east-west

rail-trail line that travels from Smiths Falls to Strathcona. This popular trail connects with the K&P Trail in Harrowsmith, linking K&P destinations to Sydenham, home of Canada’s oldest general store, Trousdale's.

A popular destination for cyclists along the Cataraqui Trail is Chaffey’s Locks, where visitors can enjoy an ice cream at the Opinicon.

Each of these trails also help to create the Trans Canada Trail route, also called “The Great Trail.” This is a 24,000 km route that traverses Canada and the Cataraqui, K&P and Tay-Havelock trails all contribute 115 km locally to that network.

There are many natere trails to enjoy in Frontenac County.

Loop Trails Frontenac County has many nature trails built out in loops for adventurous hiking, leading up to vistas with views of landscapes that are still and spectacular. The Canadian Shield holds sway in the northern reaches of Frontenac, and the Frontenac Spur juts into the heart of South Frontenac to Frontenac Park and into the Buck, Dog and Loughborough Lake regions.

For every formal trail, there are dozens of others, shared by neighbours and lake associations alike. Just like all the local trails, the etiquette is simple – enjoy, look and listen to absorb the whole experience, and leave nothing behind.

Kennebec Wilderness trail near Arden Located on a 156-acre tract of public parkland near Arden, the Kennebec Wilderness Trails offer four seasons of outdoor recreational activity; hiking, geocaching, birding, and snowshoeing. The trail network consists of over 7 kilometres of hiking trails winding through a mixed forest of deciduous and coniferous trees. The valley meadows, wooded hillsides and rocky ridges are home to an abundance of wildlife. The terrain is rugged and undulating in many areas, offering a challenging hike for all ages. The trails can be accessed at trailheads located at 28786 Hwy #7 and on Nordic Road in the Kennebec Shores Waterfront Community. Maps are available on site or by googling Kennebec Lake Parkland Trails.

Shabomeka Legpower Pathfinders Hike by bicycle or walk, or ski tour in the winter. A 65 km network of beautifully scenic paths for non-motorized use only, meandering through a wide variety of habitats in

Explore the forest heartland surrounding Shabomeka Lake in the Madawaska Highlands of the Land O’Lakes. A trail/network map is available at www.trailforks.com/region/shabomeka-lake.

The pathhead is 1067B Shawenegog Lake Lane, marked PEARCE 22/23/EKELI. These minimal-impact paths were developed specifically for regular bicycles, in anticipation of ‘forest bathing’ or Shin Rin Yoku. Those with mountain bikes designed for maximumimpact ‘trails’ are directed to the excellent Flinton Forest Trails in the Township of Addington Highlands.

Meisel Woods This picturesque property surrounds a 60acre, headwaters lake known as Beaver or Bass Lake and includes additional water frontage on Crow Lake. The Sandi Slater Memorial Walk is a central feature of this conservation area.

The trail is a stunning, 5km walk through forest, rocks, over streams and hills and boasts a number of lookouts, and benches that offer

gorgeous views of Bass Lake and the surrounding area. Meisel Woods Conservation Area is located at 1392 Anderson Road North, near Crow Lake. Turn onto Anderson Road for approximately .5 km then turn right again on Anderson; 1 km ahead on the right-hand side is the trailhead. Google Meisel Woods.

There are numerous other hiking trails around. Frontenac Park and Bon Echo Park have extensive trail networks, and there are trails at the Gould Lake Conservation Area, and at the Portland Conservation Area.

Otter; the southern lake features a public island and is connected to the park office if you need a break.

A quick paddle takes you to the 341-meter portage into Doe Lake within the interior of Frontenac.

2. Mitchell Creek to Birch Lake To the west, Mitchell Creek meanders into Birch Lake. A relaxed outing with opportunities for fishing, photography, birding, and spotting other native critters.

If you paddle to campsite #7, a nearby hike takes you to The Old Birch Lake Mine and Three Old Homesteads.

3. Three-Lake Loop: Big Salmon, Little Clear, and Little Salmon Lakes This route is rigorous and more challenging with three portages. It’s a full-day and entirely within the park interior giving you the best wilderness experience.

Beginning at Big Salmon Lake, head towards campsite #5 at the far end of lake.

The first portage to Little Clear Lake is on the north shore and considered moderate at 923 meters with two hills.

Explore Little Clear and visit the island before undertaking the next portage. Rumor has it there are big, bucket-mouth bass down below, and it’s common to catch a glimpse of deer, loons, otters, and other wildlife.

Next, head to the 856-meter portage at the south-western corner of the lake; this is a moderate trek with one hill.

Little Salmon Lake is small, so paddle the

perimeter and explore the Moulton Gorge, or pull out for lunch and a break before the final leg of the journey.

The last 974-meter portage is rugged and features one hill; once you’re back to Big Salmon, the launch is a quick 20-minute paddle.

Cycle Back Road Cycling In Frontenac Doug Kennedy, who runs a business, Frontenac Docks, from his home north of Verona, is a familiar figure in the spring, summer, and fall, riding his bicycle while lit up with reflective gear.

Kennedy is connected to a network of cyclists from across Eastern Ontario, and often rides with a club that is based in Kingston. One of his favourite things to do, is to show off the cycling opportunities in Frontenac County. He rides thousands of kilometres each year and is passionate about his sport.

“There are so many fantastic routes for all kinds of riders, throughout Frontenac County," he said.

Kennedy said that gravel road riding is becoming more and more popular, on bicycles that

are equally comfortable to ride on asphalt, well maintained gravel, or the crushed gravel on the K&P Trail.

“With the trail complete to Sharbot Lake now, I like to use it in place of Road 38,” he said.

Last year he led several rides in Frontenac County, taking advantage of the trail and some of the scenic roads in Frontenac County that provide for an enjoyable outing.

One ride that he led started from Sharbot Lake, took the the K&P south to the Crow Lake Road. The cyclists then ran the whole length of the Crow Lake Road, past the village of Crow Lake, with its view of the lake, and up and down some substantial hills all the way to Bolingbroke. They then took Lanark County Road 36, past historical farmsteads, before jumping on the trans Canada trail at Maberly for a return to Sharbot Lake. The ride was followed by lunch on a restaurant patio.

“We all had a great day.”

Another ride started off closer to his home base, adn ended with a run along the Wagarville/4th Lake Road that joins Parham and Tamworth.

“Hybrid bicycles are a big trend in cycling these days, and the roads that we have in this region are ideal for them. The routes offer options for different levels of cyclists, and great places to see and enjoy. I have not gone up to North Frontenac yet, but maybe this summer. I have heard really good things about it.

Art & Heritage Museums & Archives South Frontenac Museum The South Frontenac Museum is located in a classic stone school house at 5595 Road 38 in Hartington. Owned by the Township of South Frontenac, it is managed by the South Frontenac Museum Society.

Whether you're exploring Frontenac for the first time or live here, drop in to catch a glimpse into how people lived 50, 75, 100 or 150 years ago, before the area became known for its rural homes and cottages.

Our museum has artifacts, photographs, documents and stories from the first contact between the Indigenous peoples and European settlers, through the logging and mining booms, to the development of local farms and the evolution of area businesses in South Frontenac and Eastern Ontario. We are continually enhancing our collection and we'd love to share it with you.

in 2005, the idea of finding a place to celebrate the storied history of the island was born with it. Purchasing and renovating the house was a project that took almost 5 years to complete.

From artifacts, to tools, newspapers and books, the museum has information that paints a picture of life in the past on the island, and how it has changed over time.

Wolfe Island was named for a historical figure, General Wolfe.

Because of the island's location, a lot of the early history of Canada has taken place on its shores. From fur trade to the French-British conflict, the coming of the Loyalists and the development of agricultural communities in the 19th and 20th Centuries, Wolfe Island has been part of it all, and the centre for remembering that history, is the Old House Museum.

Railway History in Sharbot Lake Submittted by the Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Society.

Along the K&P Trail, in the heart of Sharbot Lake, the Railway Heritage Park and Walkway invites visitors to discover and celebrate Frontenac’s rich rail history.

The Railway Heritage Walkway is a series of informative signs along the former K&P track bed. Maps of the Walkway are available in the mailbox at the caboose in Railway Heritage Park on Elizabeth Street (or online at kickandpushca.wordpress.com).

The railway museum in the caboose is open Saturdays from 11-3 during the summer. The outdoor displays are always open, and a railway-themed playground, picnic tables, and head-in-the-hole photo stand makes it a comfortable and fun spot for families.

Heading south from the park, the Railway Heritage Walkway follows the K&P Trail through Thomson’s Cut, named for Thomson’s Mill, the largest of five sawmills in the village. The walkway continues past the beach and across the causeway. It finishes at a fork in the trail which is actually one corner of a huge triangle (or “wye”) where trains could do a three-point turn to change direction. If you are biking, you can head left on the K&P Trail south to Kingston, or head to the right on The Great Trail -- west to Vancouver!

the Kingston & Pembroke Railway (known as the K&P or "Kick & Push"). The railway had been blasted through the Canadian Shield, to bring the natural resources of Frontenac County to the docks in Kingston.

Back in the late 1800s, the stores in the village were stocked with goods which came daily from Kingston on the new railway. For farmers, a trip to the city now took hours instead of days. Passenger service disappeared after World War II, as automobiles took over, and the final section of track was torn up in 1986.

The trackbed of the Kingston & Pembroke Railway has now become the K&P Trail, part of a nationwide recreational trail network that gives Sharbot Lake a brand new link to the rest of Canada.

The demand for alpaca fibre and alpaca products increases every year, and these fulltime alpaca farmers are dedicated to a strong alpaca industry through their mentoring program, educational seminars such as Alpaca 101, & workshops on learning to nuno felt, weave, and knit, spin or crochet. Other activities on the farm include pre-arranged alpaca walks through the pastures. This farm is also part of the North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour and National Alpaca Farm Days, both functions take place September 26th & 27th 2020.

The 2020 North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour will be held on the weekend of September 26 and 27. 20+ artists in 15 different studios participate. North Frontenac Dark Skies Preserve North Frontenac has some of the most southerly exceptional dark skies in Canada. For millions of people in southern Canada and the north-east US, this is the best view of the night sky and the Milky Way that they will most likely experience. The Dark Sky Preserve is a public space with amenities, including parking, washroom, electrical service and the concrete pad, where anyone can set up their telescope and enjoy the dark skies, weather permitting. In Frontenac County, there’s a community of farmers who believe in growing crops and raising livestock in a way that is sustainable and ethical. Their farming practices actually improve the land, support healthy and happy animals, and produce food that is whole and nutrient rich. As a result, Kingston’s culinary creators rely on the talented and tireless farmers in the region as they work together to bring organic, compassionately raised and ethically sourced ingredients to the table.

Here are a few ways you can experience the taste of Frontenac, on the farm, from the market or at the table.

Food Less Travelled Kim and Dave Perry operate both Perry Maine-Anjou Farm and Food Less Travelled located at 6674 Road 38 in Verona.

Food Less Travelled carries products from the Perry farm, Kim’s handmade take-home meals, and products from local farmers across Frontenac County and the region.

“We try to stay as local as possible,” explains Kim. “Where it was grown is a priority, and then where it was processed. Whether it is organic, if possible, and whether it is from a family farm or a small family processor.”

Long Road Eco Farm Xiaobing Shen and Jonathan Davies run Long Road Eco Farm, just north of Kingston on Highway 38. At the centre of their farm operation are the Chinese peasant foods that Xiaobing prepares -- “farm sum,” that includes delicious steamed buns, along with chili oil and fermented vegetables and tofu.

The food is based on what Xiaobing ate growing up in rural China.

You can buy Farm Sum and other products at the Memorial Centre Farmers’ Market in Kingston every Sunday from 10-3. Get in touch with Xiaobing to arrange a Farm Sum workshop so you can learn how to make delicious steamed buns and dumplings.

Maple Ridge Farm Becky Williams and Mark McCrady run Maple Ridge Farm just north of Sydenham. They raise grass-finished Dexter Beef, pastured Berkshire pork, and pastured chickens for meat and eggs. They also keep honeybees and grow cut flowers.

“Our goal is to grow the most nutritious, delicious food,” says Mark. “When you buy meat from us it’s good for you, it’s good for the animal, and it’s good for the environment.”

Villages

Villages Battersea, Inverary and Sunbury Inverary is the centre of the largest growth area in Frontenac County and new services are always coming onstream. It is home to Garrett's Bake Shop. Northway Home Hardware and LCBO, Inverary Pharmasave, Lavalee's Cookery, Maple Country Home and Farm, etc.

Between them, the Sunbury General store and Ormsbee's Mercantile contain everything from rubber boots to banana bread.

Battersea is a popular dining, fishing, boating and resting spot for tourists, with two licensed restaurants, a hotel, a fishing store, convenience store and a nearby resort.

In 1856 James Campbell suggested that the

post office in the community that was known as Storrington be named Inverary, after his ancestral home in Scotland, ans that's where the village name of Inverary came from. The local township maintained the Storrington name until 1998.

Cloyne and Northbrook Spread out along Highway 41, the hamlets of Cloyne and Northbrook straddle two counties. A grocery store, restaurants and a cafe anchor Northbrook’s retail, and Cloyne has a butcher shop, convenience store, a full service marina and store, and the Pioneer Museum. Hardware and outfitting stores are also located on the stretch of Hwy. 41 between the two hamlets.

Nearby Flinton is named after Bill Flint, a business man and senator from Belleville who developed mills and villages along Skoottamatta river in the mid 19th century.

Harrowsmtih Harrowsmith is known as the gateway to the Canadian Shield. The trailhead just south of the village is located on both the K&P and Cataraqui trails. With two pizzerias, a butcher shop/LCBO outlet (Gilmour’s meats) a new pharmacy, and a fabric store, Harrowsmith is a hamlet on the move.

The first sawmill in the region was opened in Harrowsmith in 1826, and the village became a centre for wood based production, including mills, tanneries, barrel and carriage factories that thrived until the latter part of the 19th Century.

Ompah and Plevna The hamlets of Ompah and Plevna are the social headquarters for year-round residents in North Frontenac. Amenities in Plevna include a grocery store and gas bar, restaurants, an LCBO outlet, and a large hardware store, and lodges are located nearby. The North Frontenac Dark Sky Preserve is located nearby. Over in Ompah the Community Centre is home to the local library and daily events. The Scenic Route Rest stop is located across the road.

The village of Plevna was originally called Buckshot but the post office insisted on a new name. Locals argued about the name until one man said that the situation was nearly as bad as the situation that had existed for years at a town in Bulgaria that

Sharbot Lake features a beautiful public beach and a railway heritage park. Amenities include: restaurants, a café, a bakery, grocery store, pharmacy, gas stations, a hotel, B&B’s, a provincial park, boat launch, hardware stores, marina, LCBO and much more.

Sharbot Lake and vicnity had been summer hunting and fishing grounds for thousands of years. Francis and Mary Sharbot settled at Sharbot Lake from Lake ofTwo Mountains in about 1850. The lake and towns were named after them.

Sydenham Sydenham is a commercial hub. The Point Park is a recreational centre on Sydenham Lake, which is in the heart of the village, next to the largest library branch in Frontenac County. A full grocery and hardware store, Canada’s oldest general store, restaurants, a pharmacy, an LCBO outlet and more can all be found in “downtown” Sydenham.

Verona Road 38 becomes Verona Main street over the most concentrated shopping strip in Frontenac. You can find gifts, groceries, hardware and local food, all the supplies you could need for a long stay in the countryside, even a new car.

The Verona Temperance House was completed in 1910, and the Verona organization had over 100 members in its heyday and resistance to alcohol persisted well past the end of prohibition.
