Jule Koch - Brison 1951-2016

ast Thursday (December 15) Jule Koch died peacefully in her sleep at St. Mary’s by the Lake hospital in Kingston, two months after her 65th birthday, with her son Edward and daughter Catherine at her side. She took ill in late October with what she thought was Lyme disease, but found out on November 2nd that she had leukemia.

Treatments in mid and late November failed to halt the progress of the cancer.

Many readers of this paper did not even know who Jule was. That was partly because a lot of what goes on at a newspaper and news website happens behind the scenes.

Receiving and processing email and phone calls, copy editing, and performing dozens of other tasks takes hours of time and effort each week. Jule’s title at the paper was Managing Editor but she called herself an office rat. Most days of the week she came in after everyone had left and worked into the night. The other reason that reader’s did not know who she was is that she liked it that way. The last thing she would want is an article like this to be written about her, and the tributes that can be found on page 6.

Jule came to Canada from Guyana when she was a girl, and moved to Clarendon Road around 1971. She lived there with her first husband Gerald for almost 20 years, most of the time with no running water or hydro. She became a master basket-maker and sold her work throughout the region.

She believed in simple, sturdy designs, and the willow and dogwood baskets and furniture, even those that are over 30 years old, are as strong and beautiful as they were when she first made them. In 2000, her second husband David purchased the Frontenac News. Shortly after he took over, Jule started helping out at the paper. She realised that running a paper was more than David thought it would be, and it turned out she had a pretty good instinct for it. Pretty quickly she became central to the operation of the paper, and stayed in that role until a few weeks ago.

When David owned the paper, her only ‘pay’ was a tiny ad called “The promise” a different line of scripture that runs in the paper each week. I started working for both of them in January of 2002, and soon after that David became ill. It turned out he had pancreatic cancer, and he died on December 11, 2002, almost exactly 14 years before Jule died.

After David died, Jule became the owner of the paper and I worked for her as editor. She believed in the concept of the Frontenac News that its founders were committed to, service BUSINESS CARD SIZE

In 2008, Jule sold the paper to me, but we both kept our jobs, me as editor/reporter, and she stayed on as managing editor. While we have worked closely together for 15 years, we rarely agreed on fundamental issues, particularly anything that had to do with religion, as she was a Pentecostal and I am an atheist. Bill Robinson - 1934-2016

by Wilma Kenny and Jeff Green ill Robinson passed away Dec 15th, on his 82nd birthday, after almost a year of poor health following a broken hip. He had served as a Portland district rep on South Frontenac Council since 2000.

Bill was fearless and steady in his support of his constituents, and he had a keen eye for assessing, and if need be, questioning budget expenditures. He was a treat to watch at a community meeting, especially at campaign time. Nobody could hold audience attention like Bill could, with his trademark blend of humour, opinion and down-home common sense.

His wife Donna managed the Portland waste site for many years, and that’s where on weekends Bill held informal polls on various community issues. After her retirement, he moved his polls to a local restaurant. And he brought his findings back to the council chambers. Bill never really took to Facebook; he preferred good plain face-to-face contact with people.

As a young man Bill played hockey: it’s been said he could have turned pro, had he wished to.

In 1952, aged 18, he enlisted in the Canadian army and in May a year later, fought in one of the deadliest and least-known battles of the Korean War: Hill187. This battle raged for two days, and left many dead and wounded. Bill himself suffered a concussion and the

permanent loss of hearing in one ear, but continued on patrol for the remaining four months of the war.

He later remarked, “A doctor cleaned the blood out of my ear and said I was ok. It was only after that I found out he was a psychiatrist, not an MD.”After leaving the military in 1969, Bill worked for the prison service in various capacities until his retirement in 1998.

He was a dedicated caregiver to his wife in their latter years.

Jim Gratto, who served in the army with Bill, described him this week in this way: “he was rough and tumble, a goofy guy, an honest guy that’s for sure. Back in the army we all backed each other up, none more so than Bill.”

South Frontenac Mayor Ron Vandewal, who served on council with Bill for ten years, sitting next to him at meetings for most of that time, said “you always knew where Bill stood on things. And when he really had something to say, he would stand up. That’s when you just knew he was about to let go on something or somebody.”

Even though he had not been to a council meeting since February, no one was in a hurry to replace him on South Frontenac Council. He was elected to council five consecutive times and served for over 15 years, making him the longest serving councillor in the post amalgamation era of Frontenac County.

The next day he reported for work as Economic Development Officer to the administrative offices of Frontenac County, which are located across the road from his home near Glenburnie.

Before running for Council in Kingston, Allen served as a Director for the Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) He has worked at the Queen’s University Smith School of Business, and earlier as a project co-ordinator with Katimavik. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal.

Higgins to run again in 2018

In an email early this week, Higgins said “When I took office as Mayor I said I would give myself 2 years to decide if I will run again or not." Frontier Justice on a cold winters day S harbot Lake Criminal Court has always had a reputation for informality as compared to the courts in Kingston and Perth, which is something that court officials tend to talk about during the breaks. Court proceedings held in the township hall, where the Festival of Trees has just been cleaned up and the decorations for the New Year’s dance are next to come, do tend to be more informal than the proceedings in 200 year old Victorian era courthouses.

At this month’s court, however, things were more informal than ever, since the lawyer assigned for the role of Duty Counsel did not show up, leaving Judge Griffen to work directly with accused parties to determine if their matters could be resolved on the spot or should be put over to the January date. At one point, the clerk of the court was not even in place, leaving Griffen to fumble through the papers on the clerk’s desk.

“Now, I don’t even have clerk, Griffen said as he leaned over from his desk to the clerk’s desk to find some paperwork.

“I’m here, trying to get a hold of duty counsel,” the clerk said, his head popping out from behind the false wall behind the desks.

After a short break, Griffen returned and said Duty Counsel was not coming.

Still, the wheels of justice did not fall off in Sharbot Lake this week. Two of the five matters before the court were resolved, and the rest are progressing.

Convictions Donald Kellar, 52, pleaded guilty to a charge of un-authorized possession of a firearm. Kellar was in a truck driving on Westgate Road, near Hwy. 7, west of Arden, on November 17, when the truck was stopped by Constable Lefaivre because the driver of the truck did not have his seat belt fastened correctly. There were a number of rifles in the vehicle as the occupants were hunting. While the rest of the occupants had Possession/Acquisition Licenses (PAL) for their rifles, Mr. Kellar did not have one for the Remington Woodmaster 742 that was located near where he was sitting.

The gun is the property of his son and was in the care of his wife when he took it to go hunting.

Judge Griffen gave him a 12-month probation order, and asked how his wife had reacted.

“I have six months house arrest, dishes, floor sweeping, you don’t want to know the rest, your honour,” he said.

Judge Griffen did not impose a prohibition on owning firearms on Mr. Kellar, although he said the conviction might make it difficult for him to get one.

Brandon Gill, 27, was unlikely to receive legal aide and pleaded guilty on his first appearance on a charge of assault. The details of the case are covered by a publication ban. He received a 12-month probation order.

To get a reliable reading, don’t take your pressure after smoking a cigarette, drinking a caffeine-containing beverage or even if you have a full bladder. Keeping your blood pressure in the normal range is vitally important for your good health.

Speaking of smoking, the number of Canadians who smoke continues to go down. It dropped from 20.8% in 2010 to 18.1% in 2014. If you are still a smoker, perhaps this is the year you will stop. Your health will start to improve on the first day after you quit and reduce your risk of all sorts of diseases.

First Appearance Nicholas Holmes, 41, is facing six charges related to impaired driving and driving without permits and while disqualified. He is seeking legal aide and will return on January 16th.

Ongoing Wayne Kimberly, 61, is charged with failing to comply with probation, failure or refusal to provide a breath sample, operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol, and public mischief. He has paid part of a retainer to a lawyer from Kingston, and received an adjournment until February 13 to pay

the rest of the retainer and will then appear with counsel to plead to the charges or set a date for trial.

Alison Potter, 39, charged with production of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of an illegal substance, an un-authorized possession of a firearm. She was not in court, and a warrant with discretion was issued. She will need to appear in court on January 16th to avoid arrest.

High marks for Asset Management Planning - NF Council - Dec. 16

ickie Leakey, a senior manager with KPMG professional services, appeared before Council to bring an update of the Asset Management Plan that the township has been developing and following over the last 5 years. The township devotes 2% of its levy to ratepayers to a reserve fund for the replacement of capital assets, which includes equipment and renewal of both paved and gravel roads.

In her report, Leakey said that the township faces an issue of affordability when it looks at its capital needs because of its lower growth rate than the provincial average, 3.9% as opposed to 19.5%. Also, a high number of people in the township live on on fixed incomes, 39% derive all their income from pensions as opposed to the provincial average of 14%.

“You also have a lot of roads per person in North Frontenac because of the size of the township and the sparse population. For North Frontenac, as for a lot of rural townships we look at, it’s all about the roads when it comes to asset management,” Leakey said.

She also pointed out that North Frontenac is the only township she knows about that has done an inventory of gravel roads and entered them into their asset management plan.

“That’s why when it comes time for the province to look at grant applications, they see that what is coming from North Frontenac has some data behind it, and that makes a difference. Your staff and council are to be commended for all your efforts,” she concluded.

Floating dock on Canonto Lake sparks “principled” response from Good, Inglis An item that was easy to deal with at this time, but may be more contentious in the future, revealed one of the fault lines among two members of Council. The Canonto Lake Association is proposing to build a floating dock to improve boat access to the trails network it has developed at the Palmerston Canonto Conservation Area. The association has $500 to invest and is willing to provide the labour, and is asking the

township to kick in $2,500 for materials.

Before deciding, council is referring the matter to the Mississippi Valley Consernation Authority (MVCA) the owner of the land that will be accessed and the agency that provides comments on construction projects on the water.

However, if the dock is built it will become the property of the township, with all of the liability and potential future maintenance issues that flow from ownership of a public dock.

“I support this in principle,” said Councillor John Inglis.

“The association wants to improve access, they are taking initiative and we should support them.”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now, we are not in the dock business,” said Councillor Wayne Good.

When it was pointed out that the township has assumed ownership of a number of docks in recent years, Good said “I am certainly aware of that and I opposed them all,” he said.

The matter was referred to the MVCA and to the 2017 budget process as well.

Nomination for regional leadership award - The township has nominated Brenda Martin for one of the Canada 150 Regional Leadership Award for all of the work she has done for local causes, including her current work with the Clarendon and Miller archives. It is a long shot, however, since there will only be 5 winners named from the entire country.

Addington Highlands Council

Insurance brokers don’t bring lower fees

by Jeff Green s part of an initiative that is being led by Lennox and Addington County, Addington Highlands is now making use of the services of McDougall Insurance Brokers to help them navigate the world of municipal insurance. Until this year the township has dealt directly with Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT), one of three companies that offer municipal insurance in Ontario. Chuck Airhart, from McDougall, came to Council this week to talk about how his company is working at ensuring that the township has of its needs met. He said that the cost of basic insurance from JLT is set to rise this year by about $2,000 or 4%, from just under $72,000 in 2016 to $74,000 in 2017.

“The cause of this is really global,” Airhart said, “there is lots happening in the American and worldwide markets.”

In addition, he said that cyber-insurance, which until now had been covered within the existing policy from JLT, has now been pulled out and needs to be paid for on its own.

“I don’t have the final quote for that from JLT, it was not ready when I was leaving my office to come here today,” he said, but I have a price of $2,400 from another company so that is a maximum and maybe it will be less.”

Airhart’s son Mike attended the meeting with him. Mike also works for McDougall and is better versed in cyber-security issues. He said “as a municipality you have private information, including information from your ratepayers, that needs to be protected, and as we know even with a good system in place, it can be hacked.”

“How responsible are we, if we are hacked,” asked Deputy Reeve Bill Cox.

They received the information from the Airhart’s and voted to accept the $74,000 insurance contract and up to $2,400 for cyber-coverage.

Township willing to help Kaladar Commuinity Centre, Bill Cox and Councillor Tony Fritsch met with representatives from the Kaladar Community Club to talk about their struggles to keep the Community Centre open now that the Land O’Lakes Tourist Association is no longer a tenant in the building.

Tony Fritsch said that “we discussed the viability of it. It was a good and candid discussion. They are looking at revenue and at cutting costs to keep it going, and I think they will be coming forward with a request for a small grant from us before we do our budget for next year, like other groups do.

“We told them that we cannot take over the building,” Cox said, “and they seem to be ok with that. They said it costs them $6,000 a year to keep it going, but they have some problems beyond that as well. They are struggling. They do make money from the bingo’s they hold but that money cannot be used to help maintain the building. We said we would keep in touch with them and that the township does want to help to the extent that we can.”

Norm Roberts, Coun. Ron Sleeth and Mark Schjerning each voting against the budget.

For Roberts and Sleeth, the issue was the scrapping of the garbage handling fee in favour of the charge now being rolled into the tax levy. Schjerning said he was voting against the budget “on principle” because “there are a number of things we’re required to do that aren’t in the budget.” Vandewal said he wanted to keep the budget increase to 2.0 per cent.

“I’ve had time to reflect on garbage fees,” Sleeth said.

“For things like vacant land, people will be paying garbage tax on that where they haven’t been in the past.”

Treasurer Louise Fragnito said that 70 per cent of South Frontenac ratepayers would see a net reduction in the garbage portion of their taxes. Only the top 30 per cent of assessed properties will see a net increase because of the new system.

“I like the budget, there’s nothing magic about 2 per cent,” said Coun. Ross Sutherland.

Councillor Inglis said he has prepared documentation, which he offered to share with Council, which he said shows that the mileage rate is based on the assumption that the vehicle that is being driven is valued at $55,000. According to his calculations, over 35 cents out of a 54 cent per kilometre rate is to cover for the cost of replacing the current vehicle of the owner.

“If we assume that the owner is driving a $20,000 car, the rate would be 30 cents,” he said.

Remuneration At Council’s, request, staff prepared a chart comparing the pay of the mayor and members of council in North Frontenac with similar sized municipalities. The pay in North Frontenac is higher than most.

“It looks like we have the lowest population, and the highest pay,” said John Inglis.

“It is hard to say, since some of the others pay a salary plus money for attending council and other meetings, which we don’t do.”

The salary for the mayor of North Frontenac was $22,424 this year, the deputy mayor received $18,745, and council members $15,066. The pay is similar to what politicians in Addington Highlands make, but double the salaries that are paid in Central Frontenac and Frontenac Islands.

Water woes hitting Denbigh where it hurts, at the rink Councillor Fritsch reported that early in the day an attempt was made to flood the Denbigh rink, but the water table in the shallow well that is used to flood the rink is so low that it only ran for a minute or two and the rink could not be made.

“The well is shallow, it normally only runs for 15 or 20 minutes, but this time we didn’t get enough to flood the rink,” said Fritsch.

The fire department will be contacted to see if they can help out by flooding the rink until the water comes up in the well.

Memories of Jule Koch-Brison:

We approached some of our writers, friends and colleagues of Jule’s to submit their thoughts on her passing Ankaret Dean

One of my best memories of Jule is at the February Blues Craft Show in Elphin -- hours of listening to blues music and talking about God. I will miss her honesty and compassion -- her willingness to tackle the hard questions -- her friendship over the years.

When Jeff asked me to write a line about my dear friend Jule and her love for basketry, I realized it was like sadly losing a member of my family.

I think I met Jule back in the 1980s, I had become interested in finding basket makers in Canada who could show me how to make baskets. It was a dying art and I could only find a very few older men from Europe.

Somehow, through the grapevine, I heard there was a young woman who sold willow baskets in the Kingston market. I wish I could remember when we first met, we shared a passion for willow and natural materials.

At that time I was living in Oakville, and we invited Jule to come to Toronto to be part of a basket show at the Museum for Textiles and also to come to our basketry conferences at Harbourfront.

In the early 90s I moved up to McDonald's Corners, we were almost neighbours!

While demonstrating basketry at a fair, an elderly man had stopped and watched her for quite a while. Finally he struck up a conversation and said he had been a basketmaker in England for years and was visiting his daughter in Canada. During his annual visits, Eric Thornton and Jule became great friends and he would teach classes at Jule's house and he would sing and tell stories while everybody was weaving.

Jule grew her own willow, as well as collecting from the roadsides. She made a great variety of baskets, all of them useful for shopping or gathering. She also made very attractive tabletops and furniture using the littlE pieces of willow like a mosaic.

She wrote several articles for the magazine 'The Basketry Express' which I published until the year 2000, when she took it over for a few years with the help of another basket maker.

One of my wonderful memories of working with Jule was making willow coracles and then sailing them in a regatta on Dalhousie Lake.

It was wonderful to have a friend with similar interests.

She was very enthusiastic about my starting a basketry museum and gave me great encouragement. I will miss her gentle smile and passion for willow.

The first time I met Jule, was at a craft show in the early 90’s when we first moved to the area. Jule was weaving baskets at that time, beautiful baskets from willow and dogwood. She worked during the entire show, as we all talked with each other and customers throughout the weekend, Jule worked away.

At the end of the show, Jule had completed more than one basket and had joined in the visiting to boot. Jule never wasted any time. She always had a project, or many, on the go. And she was so eager to share her excitement about whatever it was that she was now up to. Whether it was gathering some native plant to cook up, running a newspaper or re-building an old log house to make her home, Jule went ahead and bravely took on whatever she needed to do. She often would teach herself how to do these things by trial and error. And she accomplished so much. Just this past summer, she built a gazebo and a boat shelter and was planning to put up a zip line for her grandchildren. Jule went about all of this very humbly and quietly, not wishing to attract attention or accolades. She just did stuff, lots of stuff, had fun doing it and loved sharing her delight in it all. Jule was also one of the most down to earth people I know, wishing for nothing but to live simply and to enjoy the love of her family. And yet, she had such an interest in others that she made us feel that she loved so many of us as if we too were

Your loving touch and expertise were in every detail in the Frontenac News. We enjoyed working with her in our years as correspondent for Parham/Tichborne as she was so supportive of us when we went through issues a couple of years ago. She was always checking in with us to make sure we were ok and to keep us on the straight and narrow and was a stickler for deadlines.

She was driven by the intricate details - times, places and ensuring that we had names spelled correctly.

How I enjoyed writing with and for Jule Koch at “the News”.

She would take the time to call on the phone for clarification, or send an e-mail of gentle corrections, and of course expressed her interest in all the reporters by hosting a pot-luck luncheon from time to time. Jule safely navigated our news: offering corrections and suggestions that all too often really saved our skin from writers pit-falls of excess wordage, sensitive issues that needed to be abandoned, excess emphasis on our own pet-peeves. I know that Jule was opposed to physician assisted death and spent her final days working on that issue as she herself was dying and in palliative care.

A strong Christian woman, Jule will be welcomed into God’s everlasting embrace and into heavenly eternity with loved ones. Let us carry on her hopes and dreams for us and make her proud.

I met Jule many years ago at a craft show, where she was selling these very amazing little dolls she had made.

Later, after the death of her first husband, I knew her as a basket maker – one of my very favourite rocking chairs was given decades more life when Jule re-caned it for me.

I still sit in it every day. And I remember Jule saying she would NEVER take on such a picky, exacting job again. She was the most gentle, kind and sincere soul, and so very capable at whatever she turned her hand to. I would never have guessed that what she would turn that capable hand to would be as a business manager, but after the death of her second beloved husband, and my friend, Dave Brison, that is just what she did. She became a rock of stability and good sense at the Frontenac News, which had been owned

by Dave and then became a wonderful partnership between Jule and Jeff Green. It was in this role that I knew her best, as I volunteered in the office of the News, and then as a correspondent. Always calm, steady, helpful, tolerant and able to quickly problem solve the host of weird and various issues that arise continuously in such an enterprise. I can barely imagine the News without her. My heart goes out to her children and family, and especially to Jeff and his family who will miss her dreadfully. I, too, feel very sad that the earth is no longer a home for her very special spirit.

I met Jule often out and about in the community however most of my interaction with her came through the Ompah column. She was amazing. How she was able to keep straight all the dates and events in all of the villages I do not know.

I do know that she caught my errors when I wrote a hurried column. She would checked with me quickly and never lost her patience. We are feeling a hole in our hearts with the news of her death. She was our main Frontenac News contact and we shall miss her quiet capable ways. Blessings to her family.

My first memory of Jule is one my first memories. I was 4 or 5, and was helping my Mum and Jule fold Craft Inroads Studio Tour flyers. I remember how strong her basketmaking hands were, she could fold 8 or 9 flyers at a time and they would be symmetrical. I could barely do two at a time, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone had to redo my helpful contributions. When I think back on this memory I think about how I must have subconsciously been learning about the power of community and also the power of women’s strength. That many hands made light work, especially with Jule’s hands among that many. I’ve learned a lot from Jule over my lifetime, she helped teach me the ropes at the Frontenac News, and we spent countless hours driving to and from Toronto talking about life.

We never really discussed our different political values, only the ones that we had in common such as our mutual love of re-using materials. When I moved home for a few months last year I worked at the newspaper. Jule had been undergoing Chemotherapy for her breast cancer and she had lost a lot of the strength in her hands. Yet she still managed to build a slide at her house. She had been collecting plastic strapping that hold the flyers to the pallets they arrive on and she really wanted to make something out of them. One afternoon she taught me how to make a basket out of this seemingly one time use material. She guided me with the enthusiasm and love that she bestowed on so many of us as we collaborated at the newspaper and in the community.My basket is by no means as beautiful as her willow creations, but I’m so thankful to have a memory of our time together. A memory that will help to inspire me to create, to serve and work in my communities, to treat everyone I meet with respect no matter who they are or what they believe.

Thank you Jule, for being such a solid human being and role model, you will be missed.

Richard passed away tragically as the result of an accident on Saturday December 10th, 2016 at the age of 63. He was predeceased by his parents Lillian (Hannah) and Leo Herns, brothers Benny and Harold Herns and sister Roseanne Herns. He was the loved father of Benji (Kaley) and grandfather of James, Willow and Leo Herns. He will be sadly missed by brothers Carmen (Diane) and Norman (Diane) Herns, sister Leona Herns, his nieces, nephews, family, his cherished cat Tom and many friends.

dedicated crowd of well-wishers braved the cold and snow last Thursday to help Registered Massage Therapist Annette Gray-Jackson and five other health and wellness practitioners mark the opening of a new centre at a converted house at 14253 Road 38.

Gray-Jackson will be seeing patients at least 4 days a week, and the other practitioners have varying schedules.

The new building was purchased by her, and she will be joined by Chiropractor Sean Rogers, who has been seeing patients in Sharbot Lake at least one day a week

for many years to go with his practice in Westport, and was co-located with GrayJackson most recently just down the road at the Sharbot Lake Country Inn. Dr. Jennifer Wheeler, who runs a Naturopathic Clinic in Perth, will see patients every second Wednesday at the centre. Megan Stewart, an Atheltic Therapist and Kinesiologist, Melanie Fyfe of Healing Feats Reflexology, and Personal Trainer, Natasha Anderson Emery, are also using the centre at different times.

Advent Beer calendar, the final week

By Jeff Green ft. DJ Softcity his is it, the last seven beers in our month long journey. The solstice is here and Christmas is at our door so it is time for beers that have been aging and picking up flavour and spice and character in the barrel and the bottle for a couple of years. I have also engaged an expert, DJ Softcity (AKA Surah Field-Green) to put together a millenials guide to alternative seasonal music to go with the beer.

Sunday – I will make one more pitch for the Imperial IPA. Beaus Brewery, as part of their Wild Oats series, makes Screaming Beaver, an oak aged IPA that is mellower than other IPA’s (ie less hoppy) but full of fruitiness.

Monday – What the hay, lets hit the Barley Wine. Mill Street of Toronto is a brewery whose beers I don’t always like but I am starting to enjoy them. To me thier best beer is the 11.5% Mill Street Barley Wine that is only availbale this time of year. I like to pour only a small amount of barley wine in a glass, and drink it pretty cold, almost like port or strong wine. I then pour another and another, but filling a large glass with it makes it too daunting.

Tuesday – It’s close enough to the solstice now to pull out a 2 year old bottle of Flying Monkey’s Chocolate Manifesto. It is a chocolate stout, with lots of dark chocolate nibs, and also a milk stout, with lactose in it.

The lactose makes it smooth, the chocolate and aging make it sweet and strong and all together it is a great beer. A note for anyone who gets to Quebec. One of the best milk stouts around is called La Vache Folle by Charlevoix. I could drink that on summer and

winter solstice and every day in between.

Wednesday – It’s no time to worry about the normal rules, it’s the shortest night of the year.

Sorry Ontario, I need some Solstice D’hiver tonight. Dieu du Ciel, one of the best breweries in Quebec or anywhere, make this barley wine elixir. It has everything. Again, small sips, slow drinking, it’s like a sweet whisky.

Thursday – not only back to Ontario but back to Kingston. On Monday night, my wife was lucky enough to get two bottles of Juggernaut from Stone City. It is a bourbon barrel aged Imperial Stout. Not really for drinking with food, more of an after dinner, around the fire beer. Very full and very heavy but frothy at the same time. It reminds me a bit of Nicklebrook’s Kentucky Bastard (which is delicious) but it is not as heavy.

Friday – Christmas Eve, eve, and again I am going to cheat, only because people in Ontario need to know about this Barley Wine and this brewery. Trois Mousquetieres makes specialty beers. They are all unusual.

Their Barley Wine Americain benefits from aging and I buy a bottle each year and drink a two year old one if I can. So much flavour, lots of caramel, but no sticky finish as long as it is not left to warm up too much. A 750 ml bottle shared with 2-4 friends is a great antidote to everything that hurts after a hard year of work.

December 24, the final night, the final beer. Cuvee from Nickelbrook, brewed in Hamilton by a guy from Sydenham. This I also wait two years to drink. It is not as heavy as a barley wine, but full of spice, and with a hint of sourness. A beer like no other, I wait all year for it.

n the season of giving, Sam Davison, President of the Grass Hogs Lawn and Tractor Club presented the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada a cheque for $1400.00.

Pamela Morey, Kingston’s Children’s Wish Foundation Chapter head proudly and graciously accepted the donation Friday, December 16th at the Harrowsmith Social and Athletic Club. Davison mentioned that his club, which is based in Kingston, has been holding 50/50 draws at every race over the past 2 years and that some of the members even donated their winnings back to the cause. The Grass Hogs Club has been going since 2007 and consists of people from Ottawa to London. They race throughout the summer months at many exhibitions and fairs throughout Ontario. Davison and his members wanted to support local people who are going through a hard time. They want the money to go where it is needed and

Children’s Wish is the perfect place.

The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada is the largest all-Canadian wish granting charity, dedicated to granting wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 17 who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. For more than 30 years, Children's Wish has worked tirelessly to grant heartfelt wishes to nearly 25,000 children and their families. Last year they granted nearly 1200 wishes, their largest wish granting year in their 32 year history.

Many children from Kingston and area have been the recipients of wishes. Morey’s son received a wish last year. According to Morey, “wishes help take the child’s mind off their health for a while so they can concentrate on happier things, which is what a child should be thinking of especially this time of year.”
