A Letter from the Head of School & Board President

Dear Friends,

As we reflect on the past year at Friends Academy, we are filled with gratitude for this remarkable community. Rooted in Quaker values, our school continues to thrive because of the shared commitment of our families, alumni, professional community, trustees, and friends. Each of us plays a vital role in shaping an educational experience that centers on inquiry, integrity, and inclusion.

Throughout the year, we have seen the power of Friends in action—in classrooms and studios, on athletic fields and stage productions, through acts of service and moments of reflection. Our students are developing not only as scholars and creators, but as compassionate leaders grounded in purpose. Their growth is made possible by your generous support.

In these pages, you’ll read stories of impact and see the names of those who have given their time, resources, and talents to help advance our mission. Every contribution, large or small, affirms a belief in what makes Friends Academy distinct: our commitment to nurturing the light within each child and preparing them to bring that light into the world.

To all who gave, volunteered, and championed our mission this year—thank you. Your generosity strengthens the foundation upon which we build, and inspires us to look ahead with hope and confidence.

With deep appreciation,

Board of Trustees

COLLABORATION BET LEADS TO ACADEMIC

The beauty of a nurser education is the collab happens between all a year, Middle School stu curriculum with that o

Grade 7 visited the Lower School Library to explore the Haudenosaunee and help grade 3 prepare for their upcoming visit to the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City Seventh graders shared highlights and tips from their own recent trip, while 3rd graders asked thoughtful questions about the Native New York exhibit This meaningful exchange sparked curiosity, built community, and deepened understanding, reminding us all to consider: How can what we learn from the Haudenosaunee inspire equality, stewardship, and peace in our own lives?

Grade 3 also received a visit from Adrianna Bocchino’s Grade 8 English class for a lesson in narrative nonfiction. Reading, Voices of Equality and Peace: The Quaker Journey, which described the origins of Quakerism, Grade 8 mentors helped their younger peers decipher an accompanying graphic organizer, which asked students to identify various elements of the writing process

CALCULATING CONCEPTS

Our Upper and Middle School students had phenomenal success at the Long Island Math Fair at Hofstra University Nineteen Middle School students brought home three gold and six bronze medals and fourteen Upper School students brought home three gold, four silver, one bronze, and an honorable mention

"To see our students confidently present their research on complex mathematical concepts was truly inspiring," remarked Grade 8 Math Teacher Lara Jadonandan.

MEDAL-WORTHY LINGUISTS

This year 116 students were honored as 2025 National Language Award Medalists for their outstanding achievements in world language exams

Among the recipients, 35 Middle School students earned medals in Spanish, French, and Chinese, while 81 Upper School students received national recognition across Spanish, French, Chinese, and Latin examinations.

Notably, three Upper School students achieved top national distinction, scoring in the 99th percentile: Aidan Lloves '26 (Spanish Level 6), Lisali Peiris '27 (Spanish Level 3), and Alexandra Lustig '28 (Spanish Level 3)

Three students demonstrated exceptional multilingual proficiency by earning medals in two languages: Jules François-Hein '28 (French and Spanish), Violet Montanez '28 (French and Spanish), and Eleanor Lawton Flatters '26 (French and Latin) Eleanor was also awarded a prestigious “Perfect Paper Certificate” for her exemplary performance in Latin

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

The Upper School Stock & Finance Club had an impressive year participating in the Wharton Global High School Investment Competition

The team of seven juniors supervised by Josh Hayes joined the competition in September.

Considered one of the most prestigious high school investment competitions, over 1,800 schools, representing 66 countries, entered this year's competition Teams were required to examine a case study featuring a potential client and then collaborate to craft an investment strategy to earn his business

Following months of various stages of competition, the top 10 teams from the original lineup of 1800+ global entrants (representing 66 countries) assembled at Wharton to present their investment pitches live to four esteemed judges The Friends Academy team placed third in the world, leaving a lasting impact on the global stage

SERVICE AT FA

Our values are at the core of our school. Service stands among them as we deepen our connections to our local and global communities Through this, we are able to strengthen the ways in which we enrich each student’s experience

Grade 9 Monthly Service

Each month our student advisories rotate among on- and off-campus opportunities, including sandwich making, reading with Lower School students, stocking and supporting local food pantries, intergenerational connections, assisting our dining and maintenance staff, and more At the end of the year, Grade 9 students shared their reflections and takeaways on how they had each been transformed from these valuable activities

An Environmental Hand

Our stewardship expands beyond our campus to our shores This year in collaboration with the FA Sustainability Committee, we partnered with many local organizations for two beach cleanups

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society invited students from Friends Academy, Hofstra, and Adelphi as well as members of Westbury Monthly Meeting for a cleanup of Lido Beach in the fall

With Friends of the Bay and the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center, a group of FA students, parents, and colleagues dropped by Stehli Beach in Bayville for the prenesting season to help prepare the area for the return of the local wildlife in the spring

Renovations

During the summer and early fall of 2024, we completed three construction projects that improved the facilities of our school: the Helen A Dolan Center Theater, the Lower School, and the first level of the Kumar Wang Library were redesigned and renovated.

Built in 1999, the Helen A Dolan Center has been the home to many Friends Academy events For 25 years, its theater has hosted numerous plays, assemblies, and special presentations. The top-to-bottom renovation of this area includes new lighting, carpet, railings, and seats The space was carefully crafted and each detail was viewed and looked over by members of the Friends Academy Arts Department

The inaugural event in the updated space was an Upper School assembly held on October 21, 2024. Through this school year, we have held a myriad of gatherings in this space including a screening of ESPN E:60’s documentary about Gunnar Esiason ’09 – Second Wind: The Boomer and Gunnar Esiason Story

THE HELEN A. DOLAN CENTER

THE LOWER SCHOOL

The Lower School is home to our youngest learners and will continue to be the foundational step The full-scale renovation has reimagined the environment for these students Brand new lighting to illuminate all the corridors, modern flooring, and a redesigned lobby and library entrance that allows more natural light in this welcoming space

THE

Since its doors first opened in September 2000, the Kumar Wang Library has been a center of connection for students and colleagues The main level of the has been refreshed to better support a new era of learning. Upgrades include improved lighting, updated carpeted flooring, a new circulation desk, and the creation of a flexible space – nicknamed “T collaboration, creativity, and exploration while also servin renovations in this space will continue through the summ second, and third levels

Athletics

Finding more ways to incorporate all divisions of our school into athletics events was a standout point in the 2024-25 school year.

STUDENTS VS. TEACHERS MATCHUPS

With a focus on community building, we held two student/teacher sporting events this year In February, the student-led club Spirit Through Sports initiated an idea to relaunch the student/teacher basketball game. The two-game event raised money for P.O.T.S (Part of the Solution), an organization dedicated to fighting poverty and hunger in the Bronx.

On the heels of the success of the basketball games, the Student Athletic Leadership Council found an interactive way to announce the addition of a new sport to Friends Academy come this fall – Girls Volleyball! The students held another student/teacher matchup, this time volleyball games in support of Morgan’s Message, an organization created to “amplify stories, resources and expertise to strengthen student-athlete mental health, build a community by and for athletes through peer-to-peer conversations and provide a platform for advocacy ”

SPRINGING INTO SPORTS

With the ongoing support of the annual Fall Sports Clinic, the Athletic Department created an addition clinic for spring sports From learning the basics of catching a baseball to cradling a lacrosse stick and more, Lower School students were guided by their Upper School peers for an afternoon of getting active

#LEADHERFORWARD

National Girls and Women in Sports Day has become a week-long celebration at Friends Academy Each division was impacted and represented by various events Our female student-athletes led conversations that shared messages of teamwork, impact, and the strength they’ve gained from making sports part of their lives. The week came to a close with a panel of four women – including two alumnae, Mimi MacKinnon '00 and Siobhan Miller Vitale '10, and FA Dance Teacher Yoaldri Messina – who are all currently working in various aspects of the sports world The women spoke to the importance of inclusivity, empowerment, and breaking down stereotypes.

Class of 2025 College Athletics

This year five members of the Class of 2025 are taking the next step, run, leap, kick, and swing into their athletic careers by each committing to their respective sport at the collegiate level. Congratulations to our athletes!

COLLABORATION & CREATIVITY

After an eight-year hiatus, our Art & Community Class made a return. Led by Visual Arts Teachers

Ari Elmayan and MaryJo Allegra, and designed for Upper School students at all art experience levels, this unique one-semester course beautifully intertwines service and creativity, fostering leadership and collaboration with Lower School students Together, they create art that inspires, enhances our campus, and embodies our Quaker values. During the semester-long class, students brought two stunning window murals to life in the Dolan Center They celebrat growth, continuing revelation, and our cherishe Quaker testimonies These shared values are al reflected in coloring books designed and assembled by Art & Community students for the Friends Academy community.

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROSTHETICS

During Middle School Arts Week, Dance Teache

Yoaldri Messina wanted to create a workshop that reinforces what it means to be an integrated artist (one who has command of many different aspects of the arts) thus, Characterization

Through Prosthetics workshop was born! With wigs, foam noses, and stage makeup in hand, students learned how color, texture, and expression bring characters to life from fairies to wolves Ms Yoaldri guided the students through applying prosthetics, blending makeup, and crafting original characters.

ORIGINALWORKS REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

The Improv Club led the charge for an interactive and creative evening at OriginalWorks Audience members enjoyed original scenes, skits, dance routines, and songs all crafted by Upper School students Students shared their artistic voices and perspectives in work developed through the Upper School Dance and Theater classes. This year, Middle School students participated for the first time with a silks routine

A TWIST ON THE CLASSIC TALE

The Upper School Winter Production this year was the incredible love story Romeo & Juliet The performance followed the same words that William Shakespeare published in 1597 and added pop songs from Kesha, Olivia Rodrigo, Coldplay, and more to give it a modern twist and emphasize its relevance, more than 400 years later Along with vibrant choreography and impressive set design, the timeless themes took on new life On the closing night of the show, two dozen alumni joined the audience for a special Alumni in the Arts Night

As a culmination of Grade 3's hard work in their Persuasive Writing unit and Narrative Fiction Unit, students worked with Director of Arts Andrew Geha to study the world of playwriting. They developed characters and introduced conflicts to create original stories Students performed for their families in two plays, each written by their classmates, the first Friends Academy Playwriting Festival

Annual Fund

The Friends Academy Annual Fund is the most significant yearly fundraiser for the school The Annual Fund touches the lives of each and every one of our students and positively affects them in many profound ways Unrestricted gifts to Friends Academy are the foundation of our giving program.

Gifts by Parents

The support our parents provide to Friends is a key difference maker in defining the financial health of our community Quite simply, without it, we would not be able to create the unique experiences that distinguish and define Friends Academy

Gifts by Alumni

Our alumni express their appreciation through gifts that reflect the many ways in which they were positively affected by a Friends Academy education Alumni support helps ensure that the lifelong benefits of a Quaker education, combined with the uniqueness of a Friends Academy education, remain accessible to our students Our alumni play a critical role in our students’ lives by being positive role models, participating in alumni and school events, and by the many ways in which they proudly carry the FA banner

Gifts by Parents of Alumni

Many families continue to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to Friends Academy long after their child’s graduation The financial support received from parents of our recent graduates, as well as from families of those who graduated decades ago, is a true testament to the strength of the extended Friends Academy family! Your generosity is gratefully received and continues to improve the overall experience for our students
