is not even a year old, yet as these pages will attest to, so much has already been accomplished in so short a time. This year alone, Sunrise expanded to a fourth camp in Be’er Sheva, Israel, opened its first Sunrise on Wheels program outside of New York at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, and is currently preparing to open yet another Wheels program in . . . well, we can’t tell you yet, but it’s coming up soon. Seven major communities in seven different states have been identified as potential sites for new camps, and preliminary work is going on in three of them to build the infrastructure needed for a successful launch. Our annual SunriseWALKS has been completely re-imagined (if you thought it was great before, don’t miss it–Sunday morning, June 14th, at both Pearl River and Long Island), Skechers has signed on as our latest national corporate sponsor, and this year’s walk will include an overseas component in, of all places, London! Celebrities around the country have been photographed either with our kids or wearing a Sunrise shirt/necklace, etc., stars like Ariana Grande and Katie Holmes have invited our kids to meet with them at their shows, and we’ve been featured in national media including Scholastic Magazine (distributed in every school in the nation), the Wall Street Journal and US Weekly. Our newest fundraiser–Dare to Dream–has raised over $1.5 million for our kids in its first two dinners–an unprecedented amount for an event just out of the gate. As we said in our very first Sunrise video back in 2006, “the sky’s the limit with Sunrise!” And we were right.

We send our deepest thanks to everyone who has made and continues to make Sunrise Day Camp and the Sunrise Association possible.

SUNRISEWALKS 2015: FROM OUR PARENT AMBASSADORS I am so excited

that this year marks the 10 year anniversary of Sunrise Day Camp! I'm sure you, just like me and all the other parents at Sunrise, are so thankful for all that Sunrise has done for not only our kids, but us too! I'll never forget the first time I dropped my daughters off at camp; they were both so excited and I was so nervous. It was the first summer the camp was open and there were only about 35 kids there and almost every kid had their own counselor.

Although the camp has grown tremendously, it is still as personalized for each camper as it was on that first day, and my kids are still excited for camp as they were that first day.

Knowing the happiness my daughters get from Sunrise makes me the happiest mother in the world! Let's all show our support for Sunrise as they have always shown us and come out to SunriseWALKS on Sunday, June 14th! I look forward to seeing everyone at the Walk!

This year marks

the TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY of Sunrise Day Camp!

And whether your children have attended camp for one summer, all ten, or somewhere in between, we can all agree that Sunrise Day Camp has been magical for our kids. From the facilities, to the counselors, to the friendships our children have forged, Sunrise has become a staple for the summer months.

As parents, I’m sure we have our own favorite memory. Mine was remembering the times we were able to swim with the kids at the late stay barbecues.

But now, I have a new favorite memory of Sunrise. It happened only a few short months ago at this year’s first SunriseWALKS meeting. I met a parent there who I had not seen in seven years. Our kids had received treatment at the same time. While everyone else in the room was introducing themselves to one another, we were standing, hugging, crying, laughing. And then this parent spoke to everyone in the meeting. She told us that even though her son was only able to attend Sunrise for one summer before he passed, she said Sunrise had made an everlasting impression in his life. That is what Sunrise means to our kids, means to us, as parents.

TULANE UNIVERSITY FUNDRAISES FOR SUNRISEWALKS! Four of our counselors from Sunrise Day Camps Long Island and Pearl

River shared their love of Sunrise with their college friends at Tulane University in New Orleans! Charley Cooper teamed up with Sabrina Goldbaum, Elizabeth Snyder, Marcy Cohen, and the Vice President of Philanthropy of their sorority Sophie Schneider–assisted by Amanda Beck–to throw a “Let’s Get Funky” concert on March 19th to benefit Sunrise. The concert was a ton of fun and raised nearly $6,500 for our camps! It was such a huge success that they plan to make it an annual event!

Additionally, the group will continue their fundraising efforts by creating a Tulane SunriseWALKS Team on Long Island and at Pearl River Walk. With SunriseWALKS only a little over a month away, on Sunday June 14th, it is not too late to set up a team and begin fundraising!

HEATHER ON EARTH FOUNDATION The Heather on Earth Foundation

was created in order to deliver the “Magic of Music” to children in places where they need to find hope and healing.

Heather’s mother Geri once said; “You know the power of music in your own lives; how the magic and rhythm uplifts and soothes your soul. Now imagine what it does for a child who is sick. There are no words to describe what you witness in the eyes of these precious children as you watch the music take over.” We are grateful to the foundation for creating the Heather on Earth Music Gazebo at camp this summer! It will be the central location for all music at Sunrise Day Camp – Long Island and a magical place for children to create and share their melodies throughout our campsite.

JANET & JOHN KORNREICH DO IT AGAIN! Each summer

we love the idea of bringing something new to our camps. We love to see the joy on our kids’ faces when they get off the buses on that first day of camp and discover some wonderful new improvement or activity. Luckily we have very generous partners who feel the exact same way! This summer Janet & John Kornreich (JK Kids) are once again providing those Janet and John Kornreich in front of their first day smiles – this year on 2014 Sunrise Project, Miniature Golf Long Island with a brand new patio behind the Pavilion and a new sound system! The JK Kids Patio will bring a brand new play space for our campers and the sound system will provide music throughout camp!

COMING SOON TO PEARL RIVER We are pleased to announce

that through the generosity of three very special families, Sunrise Day Camp–Pearl River will be adding three new program areas for our campers this summer.

Campers will be “hands deep” in clay as we launch a ceramics program thanks to a donation from Lucy Kronenberg and her Give a Mitzvah–Do a Mitzvah project through the UJA Federation of New York. Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium that many children have never experienced before. Its three–dimensional nature encourages them to think about structure, shapes and forms. They can experiment with a variety of building techniques while they focus on their ideas and adapt to change along the way. There is something very magical about children when they are thinking and working creatively.

Our second addition also comes through the Give a Mitzvah–Do a Mitzvah program with a donation of a scoreboard and basketball specialist from Matthew Murstein. His donation will bring extra excitement into the game as campers can see their points on the board in real time.

Our third addition will be a seven foot high climbing wall which will be supervised by a trained qualified instructor with assistance from our Sunrise staff. Campers will have an opportunity to safely climb the wall, cheered on by their friends. Climbing Walls also build confidence, nurture problem solving skills, increase core strength and flexibility, and of course they are FUN. Thank you to Froma and Andy Benerofe for this amazing addition to our campsite!

WELCOME: MARIANNE BOSSHART–DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE Sunrise Day Camp–Pearl River

is pleased to announce that Marianne Bosshart has joined our staff as Development Executive, working with the Sunrise Association development team to increase donations and corporate funding as well as “putting Sunrise Day Camp–Pearl River on the map.” According to Marianne, “Sunrise is a beautiful thing…caregivers are given a reprieve from the financial and emotional pressures and the kids get to experience just being a kid first and not a pediatric patient.”

Having spent 18 years working in the non-profit health care segment, Marianne’s wide range of experience includes fundraising, individual giving, corporate sponsorship, research and grant writing, creating strategic alliances and community outreach, as well as volunteer recruitment and management. She has extensive professional experience with non-profit companies including the National Kidney Foundation, American Red Cross, Special Olympics and American Heart Association, and has provided non-profit consulting support to a variety of large communications companies. Having worked with the American Cancer Society on the Relay for Life, she has a keen understanding of the key issues facing families whose loved ones have life-threatening illness.

Marianne is anxious to get the communities–Rockland, Westchester and New Jersey–fully engaged in order to create greater understanding and awareness. “Sunrise is doing great work. You are really making a difference in the lives of children with cancer and their families…and that is why we do this.”

SUNRISE ON WHEELS: ROLLING INTO NEW JERSEY

On Wednesday, April 22nd, Sunrise on Wheels rolled its tie–dye rain-

bow trunk into its 10th Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit at Hackensack University Medical Center. Sunrise on Wheels is perhaps the most exciting year-round project that has come from our Sunrise Day Camp summer program, bringing the day camping experience right into the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Departments of our affiliated hospitals.

This incredible program brings smiles and laughter to dozens of children each week as they explore the surprises inside our magical trunk and create beautiful masterpieces with our weekly arts and crafts projects. Top that off with a little bit of music and song, and we’ve got ourselves a day of camp!

Lisa Lehrman, MSW is the Coordinator overseeing the program at Hackensack. As Hospital Liaison, she has already established friendships with the staff, children and families there. Here’s to our newest adventure...on Wheels!

JUSTIN: FROM SUNRISE ON WHEELS KID TO SUNRISEWALKS AMBASSADOR 2015!

In life

there are people who can change your world, your perspective and your very being in a heartbeat. Justin is one of those people. His beautiful smile warms the heart of everyone who knows him.

In November 2012, Justin went for a routine checkup at the eye doctor which quickly turned into a visit to the Emergency Room. After several CT scans and MRIs, doctors found a brain tumor pressing on Justin’s optic nerve. Ten days later, he had lost vision in both eyes.

We met Justin at one of our Sunrise on Wheels sessions. He loves playing, singing and dancing, doing arts and crafts, hanging out and talking, and playing music on the iPad keyboard...and he does it all with his beautiful smile.

When we suggested to Justin and his family that he attend Sunrise Day Camp, there was no hesitation. He never questioned his own ability to engage in activities or have fun. Justin is nothing short of amazing…never letting his visual impairment impede his excitement for new adventures…

On his first day of camp, Justin was asked if he was having a good day. His answer was priceless: “No. I am having a GREAT day!” he answered with enthusiasm. Last summer at the camp talent show, Justin stood in front of the entire camp and sang “Happy.” The entire camp cheered and sang right along with him. He is already planning his performance for the 2015 talent show.

Justin is a passionate and energetic young man who is eager to give back to the camp he loves so much. We know his commitment to bringing happiness to his fellow campers will continue to inspire them for a long time! Join us at our annual SunriseWALKS on June 14th and help bring the magic of Sunrise to Justin and so many other children.

SUNRISE ISRAEL CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS It was an exciting evening at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art to celebrate

Sunrise Israel’s fifth anniversary. Over 500 people gathered to learn more about and revel in the accomplishments of Sunrise Israel, its Board and volunteers, in providing our amazing day camp program to more than 1200 children since its opening.

In true museum style, welcoming us to the event, were large canvases of beautiful photographs taken by our campers. Music and cocktails were followed by a program hosted by journalist, Lihi Lapid, with a camp video, greetings extended by Menachem Revivi (Board Chair of Sunrise Israel), Ron Huldai (Mayor of Tel Aviv) and Arnie Preminger (President & CEO, Sunrise Association) who, along with Michele Vernon (Senior VP for Camping and Related Services, Sunrise Association) presented a gift from the Association on this grand occasion. Music filled the air with song and instrumentals by well-known musical artists Johnathon Geffen, Sivan Talmor, Vered Picker and Shlomi Shaban. Mazal tov to Event Chairs Varda Samet and Mike Fliderbaum, the staff of Sunrise Israel, Hagar Yona and Lital Gruss and the many committed volunteers who made this an event to remember. It was an elegant celebration and a grand way to rejoice in bringing Sunrise Day Camp to the children of Israel for these past five years.

SUNRISE ISRAEL–BE’ER SHEVA The children of Israel

had the chance to celebrate their childhood for five days during this March’s first Passover Camp. On March 29 , the sun shone brightly on Be’er Sheva, a desert city in the south of Israel. It was the opening day of our fourth Sunrise Day Camp (the second one in Israel). Music was in the air and children, both Jewish and Bedouin Arabs were greeted warmly by their counselors. Five days of engaging activities followed. The children became more and more comfortable playing with their new friends and knowing that Sunrise Day Camp was all about life and being a carefree, joyful child. The energy was high and the days were filled with singing, dancing, playing sports and games, making music, arts and crafts and special themed activities. Volunteers from the local conservative congregation served lunch daily and staffed the ‘resting room’ where they played board games and more quiet activities with the children. th

But this is just the beginning. This summer, in July, there will be another three weeks of fun when the camp will be filled with the sounds of children’s laughter. Once again the halls and courtyards of the Maof School for Excellence and camp staff will be celebrating life in true Sunrise style. Michal Lipman, Camp Director, who trained in the Israeli Scout movement, created a fantastic, loving and embracing environment for the children and chose energetic and compassionate staff with big hearts and warm smiles. Thanks to the strategic partnership between the Sunrise Israel Board (Amuta), the Municipality of Be’er Sheva, the town of Rahat, the Be’er Sheva Ministry of Education and Welfare, Congregation Eishel Avraham, and Soroka Hospital.

GARDEN OF DREAMS

has been fortunate enough to partner with the Garden of Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that works with the Madison Square Garden Company to positively impact the lives of children facing obstacles such as homelessness, extreme poverty, illness and foster care. Through their Garden of Dreams Giving program, the foundation helps its partner organizations meet the critical needs of the children they serve, through direct support of scholarships and tangible, targeted community projects.

This year our campers had the opportunity to attend the GDF prom hosted at Madison Square Garden, a talent show, and lastly but certainly not least, the “Inspire Scholarship.” On April 8th, each of 12 recipients was awarded a $10,000 renewable scholarship for each year they attend college. We are proud to announce that our very own camper turned counselor, K’von Jones was one of this year’s recipients.

K’von has been a Sunrise camper since 2010. This past summer in 2014, he became a counselor and a role model to campers and staff alike. He is a hardworking, caring, compassionate and dedicated young man who stops at nothing to achieve his goals regardless of the many obstacles he has had to face as the sibling and best friend to his brother Karon who is struggling with cancer.

When asked about receiving the Inspire Scholarship Award, K’von said, “I was grateful that I was selected to receive this scholarship from the Garden of Dreams. Now that I can afford to go to the University at Buffalo in the fall, I will make it my goal to keep a high GPA every semester so I can start a career in engineering.” We congratulate K’von on all of his accomplishments and thank the Garden of Dreams for making dreams a reality!

Three years ago

Sunrise was honored to meet a new supporter, William Villafranco, trustee of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. In the years since, Bill has become a trusted friend and advocate of our mission, and with his support, Toulmin has already provided $100,000 worth of grants for various Sunrise endeavours. Recently Bill created a unique opportunity – this time for our counselor staff! The Virginia B. Toulmin Health Care Scholarship was designed to prepare the next generation of health care professionals by providing educational scholarships to students who are pursuing a course of study in a medical or healthcare related field. Four of our counselors from across our three camps were recently honored, each receiving a $2,500 scholarship. Our Long Island winners were: Tracy Rosenblatt, pursuing a Master of Science degree in Child Life, and Layne Morowitz, a second year medical student. From Israel: Gal Friedman, a third year medical student. From Pearl River: Rachel Murro a sophomore pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology, Health and Society. We congratulate our winners and are extremely grateful to Bill Villafranco and the Toulmin Foundation for their support!
