Today,theFACservesastheofficialState-LocalpartnertotheCaliforniaArts Council,asdesignatedbythecountyboardofsupervisors ByMemorandumof Understanding,theFACservesasthelocalartsagencyfortheCityofFresno, taskedtosupportandpromotetheartsindustryandtoEnrichOurCommunity’s WayofLifeThroughtheArts,andactsasanumbrellaagencyforartistsandart organizationsfromallculturesanddisciplinesthroughadvocacy,education, programs,andservices.

Weareanon-profitorganizationmanagedbyavolunteerboardofdirectors.The FACsolicitssupportfromfoundations,government,andcorporatefunders, membershipdues,andprivatedonations

Wearelocatedat1245VanNessAvenueinDowntownFresno,andtheofficeisopen tothepublicduringweekdaysfrom10:00AMto2:00PM,andbyappointment

HISTORY

In1980,theFACreceivedagrantfromtheCaliforniaArtsCouncil(CAC)toprovide technicalandadministrativeassistancetovariousartsgroupsinFresnoCounty. Withinayear,thepurposeoftheFACexpandedtosponsoringandencouraging culturaleducationandcreativeactivities,aswellasservingastheumbrellaunitfor allcountyartsorganizations,insuchareasaslegislation,education,and communityawarenessofthearts Inaddition,theFACcoordinatedand disseminatedinformationconcerningthearts:Beginningin1991,withfundingfrom theNationalEndowmentfortheArts(NEA),theFAChiredfolklorist,AmyKitchener, whodevelopedourprogramoffolkartslocallyandcreatedperformancesand exhibitswithlocalcommunities.TheAllianceforCaliforniaTraditionalArts(ACTA) wasformedunderourguidanceasitsownorganization,undertheleadershipof Kitchener.Inthemid-1990s,theCityofFresnopassedArtstoZoo,ameasure collecting.001%ofsalestaxforculturalorganizations.Themoneywasdistributed forayearandahalfbeforethetaxwasdeclaredillegal.In1998,theremaining moneywasgiventotheFACandtheFresnoRegionalFoundationfordistribution.In 2010,theFACcompletedredistributingthosefundsannuallytoartsandcultural organizations.In2015,withsupportfromformerAssemblymanHenryT.Perea,the FACestablishedtheRuralAccessFund.Today,theFACcontinuestoinnovatenew grant-makingopportunitiesforlocalartists,includingtheFresnoArtsSafetyNet Fund(FASNF)andFACCares,bothinresponsetotheongoingCOVID-19pandemic thatstartedinSpring2020.Artsprogramsandculturalactivitiesattractindustry andotherbusinessestoacommunity,resultingingrowthandeconomicprogress butittakessupportfromprivateandpublicsectors,andpeoplelikeyou,tocreate andfosterthiscreativeactivity.Werelyonindividual,organizationandbusiness membershipdues,aswellaseventsponsorshipsasanintegralpartofourfunding. BeanadvocatefortheartsinFresnoCountybybecomingamemberoftheFresno ArtsCounciltoday.

Weavinghistory,philosophy,andthenaturalworldwithartmaking,Steve Dzerigianadoptedphotographyashisprimaryinvestigativeand contemplativetool.Theactivitiesofphotographyandteachingitbecame hislife’swork.HeinstructedfieldworkshopsfortheUniversityofCalifornia, SantaCruzExtensionfrom1977through2007.FortheAnselAdamsGallery PhotographyWorkshopinYosemite,from1984to1990,hewasanassistant instructorandservedasdirectoroneofthoseyears In2002,hewascocoordinatorforthe"AnselAdamsCentennialSymposiuminYosemite, EdgesandIntersections:TheEvolutionofChange”Devotedtofacilitating artandeducationinCentralCaliforniaformorethanforty-fiveyears,he hasservedascurator,juror,andconsultantformanyexhibitions, competitions,andmediaevents,inadditiontoteachingphotographyfulltimeatFresnoCityCollege In1980,heexpandedtheideaofalocalgallery devotedtophotographybygatheringchartermemberstocreate SpectrumArtGallery,oneofthelongestrunning,non-profit,cooperatives ofitstypeinthecountry.

ArtistBio:JaredM.Barbick,bornin1976,wasraisedinPalos Verdes,apicturesqueseasidetowninSouthernCalifornia. EducatedatboththeCaliforniaInstituteoftheArts(CalArts) andself-taught,Barbick’sworkhastraversedvariousmediums andsubjectsovertheyearsashemovedfromSouthern CaliforniatoMinneapolis,Minnesota,andbackwherehehas madeahomeforthelast15yearsinthecentralvalley-Fresno -withhiswifeandcat.

ArtistStatement:Barbick’sworkshavebeenexhibitedinover50 shows,wheremosthavebeenjuriedlocal,regional,national andinternationalshows.Today,mostofBarbick'sworksare inspiredbyenvironmentalismandconservationism.Theworks strivetoraiseawarenessandconsciousnessoftheanimals whoinhabitourworldandwhosharetheirliveswithourown. Apartfromthat,grapeshavepositivesymbolicmeanings; theyareoftenusedtosymbolizeabundance,goodluck, joy,andfertility. TheExchangeOfDreamsillustratesthe handofamigrantworker,adirtyt-shirtsleeve,worked andcallousedhands,handingdownthegrapestoa lightercomplectedhandwearingthecleanpressed sleevesofasuit.Thebackgroundpansdownfrombehind themigranthand.Fromaskyandfieldthelandscape turnstogreenthatwashesoutintogray.Thischangein thebackgroundismeanttodifferentiatethetwoseparate dreams.Migrantworkershavedreamsofabetterlifewith betteropportunities,whilelargecompaniesthathavean invisiblehandcontrolthemigrantworker’sdreamswith theirlustforbiggerprofits.
