Today,theFACservesastheofficialState-LocalpartnertotheCaliforniaArts Council,asdesignatedbythecountyboardofsupervisors ByMemorandumof Understanding,theFACservesasthelocalartsagencyfortheCityofFresno, taskedtosupportandpromotetheartsindustryandtoEnrichOurCommunity’s WayofLifeThroughtheArts,andactsasanumbrellaagencyforartistsandart organizationsfromallculturesanddisciplinesthroughadvocacy,education, programs,andservices.
Weareanon-profitorganizationmanagedbyavolunteerboardofdirectors.The FACsolicitssupportfromfoundations,government,andcorporatefunders, membershipdues,andprivatedonations
Wearelocatedat1245VanNessAvenueinDowntownFresno,andtheofficeisopen tothepublicduringweekdaysfrom10:00AMto2:00PM,andbyappointment
HISTORY
In1980,theFACreceivedagrantfromtheCaliforniaArtsCouncil(CAC)toprovide technicalandadministrativeassistancetovariousartsgroupsinFresnoCounty. Withinayear,thepurposeoftheFACexpandedtosponsoringandencouraging culturaleducationandcreativeactivities,aswellasservingastheumbrellaunitfor allcountyartsorganizations,insuchareasaslegislation,education,and communityawarenessofthearts Inaddition,theFACcoordinatedand disseminatedinformationconcerningthearts:Beginningin1991,withfundingfrom theNationalEndowmentfortheArts(NEA),theFAChiredfolklorist,AmyKitchener, whodevelopedourprogramoffolkartslocallyandcreatedperformancesand exhibitswithlocalcommunities.TheAllianceforCaliforniaTraditionalArts(ACTA) wasformedunderourguidanceasitsownorganization,undertheleadershipof Kitchener.Inthemid-1990s,theCityofFresnopassedArtstoZoo,ameasure collecting.001%ofsalestaxforculturalorganizations.Themoneywasdistributed forayearandahalfbeforethetaxwasdeclaredillegal.In1998,theremaining moneywasgiventotheFACandtheFresnoRegionalFoundationfordistribution.In 2010,theFACcompletedredistributingthosefundsannuallytoartsandcultural organizations.In2015,withsupportfromformerAssemblymanHenryT.Perea,the FACestablishedtheRuralAccessFund.Today,theFACcontinuestoinnovatenew grant-makingopportunitiesforlocalartists,includingtheFresnoArtsSafetyNet Fund(FASNF)andFACCares,bothinresponsetotheongoingCOVID-19pandemic thatstartedinSpring2020.Artsprogramsandculturalactivitiesattractindustry andotherbusinessestoacommunity,resultingingrowthandeconomicprogress butittakessupportfromprivateandpublicsectors,andpeoplelikeyou,tocreate andfosterthiscreativeactivity.Werelyonindividual,organizationandbusiness membershipdues,aswellaseventsponsorshipsasanintegralpartofourfunding. BeanadvocatefortheartsinFresnoCountybybecomingamemberoftheFresno ArtsCounciltoday.

JOYCEAIKEN
JoyceAikenisaProfessorEmeritafromFresnoState,whereshe taughtartfor30plusyears.SheisamultimediaartistandcoauthoredfourbooksoncraftswithJeanRayLaury.Herrecent workinvolvesthethemeofhonoringdeath.
AikenearnedbothherBachelorsandMastersofArtfrom CaliforniaStateUniversity,Fresno.Aikenstartedteaching feministartin1973atCaliforniaStateUniversity,Fresno,taking overfromfellowartist,JudyChicago,whohadstartedtheclass in1970.Shetaughttheclassuntilherretirementin1992.In1974, herstudentsfoundedanalternativeartgalleryforwomenin Fresno,CaliforniacalledGallery25.Thegallery,alongwith Aiken’sclass,helpedputFresnoonthemapasacenterforthe feministartmovement,andcontinuestobeoneofthelongest runningco-opgalleriesintheUnitedStates.
AikenwaselectedaspresidentoftheCoalitionofWomen’sArt in1978,andmovedtoWashington,D.C.forayearduringher tenure.Theorganizationactivelylobbiedfortherightsof womenartists.Herworkwiththecoalitionledtoherbeing selectedasoneofthe“80WomentoWatchinthe80s”byMs. Magazine.
In1986,shecuratedayear-longexhibitionattheFresnoArt Museum,thathonoredwomenartistsofCaliforniaactive between1945and1965.Theexhibitwasthefirstofitskindinthe UnitedStates.Shewasco-chair,in2004,oftheCouncilof100, anorganizationwithintheFresnoArtMuseumthatcontinuesto honorawomanartisteveryyearwithanexhibition,aspecial luncheon,andacatalog.Thatyear,shealsobecamethe directoroftheFresnoArtsCouncil,beforeretiringin2010.

ADAMLONGATTI
AdamLongatti’sartisticcareerisatestamenttohisdeeprootedrelationshipwiththeCentralValleyofCalifornia.Having spentmostofhislifeinthisregion,Longatti’sartworkreflectsa personaljourneyofidentityshapedbythesurrounding landscapeandthebeautyofthisarea;emphasizingthe spontaneousnatureofhispleinairtechniqueandthehistorical narrativeembeddedwithinthelandscape.“Thelandscape revealsitshistoricalrecordinitsmerepresentexistence.It’sthe challengeofrevealingthisstorythatsparksmyinterest.”
Adistinguishedartistwithanextensiveexhibitionrecord,he holdsanMFAinInterdisciplinaryArtsfromSierraNevada UniversityandanMAinPaintingfromCaliforniaStateUniversity, FresnoandaBFAfromTheUniversityofNewMexico.Hiscareer isadornedwithsoloexhibitions,andhisinvolvementingroup exhibitionsandartistresidencieshighlightshissignificant contributionstotheartcommunity.Hisworkasapublic muralistfurtherdemonstrateshiscommitmenttoenrichingthe culturallandscapeoftheCentralValley.

KEVIN STEWART-MAGEE
KevinwasbornonanAmericanmilitarybaseinIranandraised intheRustBeltofOhio.HereceivedhisBFAinFineArt-Painting andDrawingfromTheOhioStateUniversityafterstudiesat KentStateUniversityandColumbusCollegeofArtandDesign’s foundationprogram.HeearnedhisMFAfromCaliforniaState UniversityFullerton.PriortoreturningtograduatestudiesKevin workedasaprofessionalmuralistwithover100projectsin6 Westernstatesincludinglargecommissionsformunicipal, corporateandcommercialclients.Hewasafacilitatorand leadartistduringJudyChicago’s“EnvisioningtheFuture” projectinPomona,California.HehashadsoloshowsatFresno CityCollege,DowntownArtistsGalleryand1821.Heisamember oftheFigureGallerycooperative.KevinhastaughtDrawing, Painting,LifeDrawing,2DdesignandArtappreciationcourses atCaliforniaStateFullertonandMt.SanJacintoCollege.He teachesColorTheoryandalllevelsofPaintingatFresnoCity College.
