Festival Programme and Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards

Introduction When you get older you stop having birthdays and begin having anniversaries!

This is our 25th adventure in film - the anniversary of our first event in 1997. We shouldn’t really think of it as such, as Fresh tends to re-invent itself every few years. The Festival is made new each year through your films, your energy and through the technological changes that have underpinned the production of films.

Never has this been more evident than in the past twelve months. If you were making a film during this period, you would have came up against a number of practical issues – generally around being able to film while in contact with other people. This will be evident in the films we have in competition this year, the production decisions made and in many cases, the style and theme of the eventual film.

Decisions made at industry and state level have affected us, too.

Cinema has shifted away from the model of having films released and seen on the cinema initially to being distributed and screened directly on our computer screens and televisions. This was happening somewhat beforehand but has been accelerated by the restrictions on our gathering and movement. So again we are running our 2021 event online, not together as we might wish, in a cinema.

These matters don’t naturally change the fact that we still wish to tell stories, just that we have had to adapt to how we create them and where we will tell them. The most exciting aspect of the challenges we have faced this past year may be how we record it in story and song, for posterity. Maybe the privations involved will allow us to create new vehicles, new modes of delivery that carry our stories.

But we will tell stories; that will always go on. We will always wait for the light that shines to illuminate a dark corner, the twist in the tale that alters perspective, or the joke that reminds us how ridiculous it is to hold onto views that have long since lost truth or value.

So let’s not do anniversaries or even birthdays. Let’s just dust ourselves down again, make our films and tell our tales as we need to.

The lights go down. We turn to the screen. The years rush by.

Rory Okey from Dan Hubbard Casting focuses on the casting process, from zero budget to blockbuster. Finding the right acting talent can be a daunting prospect for new filmmakers and this workshop is aimed at filmmakers and young actors with an interest in getting onscreen credits.

Beginners filmmaking workshop with a youth group on Limerick’s ‘Island’

Fresh Bio Founded in 1997 as part of the as the Irish School’s Video Competition, Fresh Film was originally a schools video competition for secondary students. It has since grown into a year round organisation with a focus on national and international filmmakers spanning the primary and secondary age groups. ‘Fresh International Film Festival’ has incrementally grown in scope in response to increasing numbers of entries and Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards. now constitute three sections – Junior (7-12 years) – Senior (12- 18 years) and The International Young Filmmaker Awards. Each section is open to individual filmmakers, schools, youth and community groups in these age categories.

Fresh Film also runs a number of programmes throughout the year under five headings; Fresh Events, Fresh Education, Fresh International, Fresh Production and Fresh International Film Festival

To be eligible for inclusion film entries must be:

The original work of schools or groups or individuals aged from 7 to 18

›

Aged 7 to 12 for the Junior section,

›

Aged 13 to 18 for the Senior section

›

Completed after 25th of January

›

Completed after November

›

15 mins or less in length (Senior section)

›

10 mins or less in length (Junior section) These times are inclusive of title and end credits
