Alex Nielsen The Class of 2021 has faced challenges and obstacles like no other. 2021 was a year of challenges that would define our House spirit with unity and resilience.

The year began with so much hope, and we were excited to try to emulate our past successes in the pool and bring another championship to the Mutien trophy cabinet. Whilst we could not perform our famous Viking Clap, we cheered each other on, and the simplicity of being under the same roof competing with our friends was something we will always remember.

The Athletics Carnival was another opportunity for Mutien to show House spirit and unity, and with war cries now allowed, we had high hopes that the Viking Clap would lay the foundation for a successful Carnival. Although the result was not what we had aimed for, the participation of all Mutienites standing on the hill - bringing the roar of the Viking Clap, was something we will never forget.

Mr Martyn, our House Dean, has always instilled the Lasallian principles of faith, service, and community within our House. We demonstrated these principles in our House fundraiser BBQ, which raised much-needed funds for ‘The Breakfast Club’ in Papua New Guinea. As a House, our goal has always been to inspire and motivate the next generation of Mutienites.

We would like to thank every student in Mutien who earned service points through their participation in various College events. You have all embodied the spirit of the College, and you embody those words which we look at every day when we walk up the drive: “enter to learn, leave to serve”.

We want to thank our House Dean, Mr Martyn and the Mutien Tutor Teachers who mentor and guide us through our Oakhill journey. We have been thrown so many unknowns, and as we logged in daily to Teams, we were reminded of the importance of human connection. This year has been the greatest reminder of House spirit and that our House in so many ways, is our family.

We want to thank the Mutien Class of 2021 for supporting us through two of the most challenging years. We have lived with so much uncertainty, and had so much taken away from us, yet as we have been told on many occasions: “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. We are a strong House, we are a united House, and we know that each and every one of you is proud to wear the mighty green.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to lead such a remarkable House, and we hope that you never take for granted walking up the drive, sitting in the yard with your friends, and hopefully never logging on to Teams again. Go the mighty Mutien!”
