Boys Basketball

I will start my report by firstly and foremostly thanking our outgoing Basketball Convenor, Mr Troy McMurrich, who some 12 years ago took on this role with nine Basketball teams. His vision, dedication and commitment to Oakhill Basketball made it what it is for this season: 53 fantastic boys teams.

On a personal note, I would like to personally thank Mr Troy McMurrich and Mr Andrew Wisemantel, for their guidance, encouragement, and open-door policy which saved me on many occasions, where I was either at a loss or just busy getting the season up and running and needed help. They were always there: thank you again, Troy and Andrew.

“Basketball at Oakhill has continued to grow with the 2020/2021 ISA season being the biggest we have ever had. The Basketball season started well, with just over 500 students enrolling to play.”

Such large numbers put forward many challenges including court availability and sourcing Coaches and Managers. These challenges were met, and below are a few of the success facts from the season.

The 2020-21 season ended up being divided into two distinct halves. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the first half saw the Premierships being awarded to the Minor Premiers in each division. The second half of the season saw the 1st place team play the 2nd place team to decide the Premiership.

For Oakhill the following 23 teams were the Premiers in the first half of the season: Open Maroon, Open Navy, Open Red, Open Blue, 17 Navy, 17 Blue, 15 Maroon, 15 White, 15 Yellow, 15 Maroon, 14A, 14 Maroon, 14 Navy, 14 Red, 14 Yellow, 14 Cats, 14 Purple, 13A, 13 Maroon, 13 Gold, 13 Red, 13 Orange, and 13 Cats.

The following 13 teams were the Runners Up in the first half of the season: 1sts, Open Green, Open White, 17A, 15A, 15 Gold, 15 Green, 14 Green, 13 Green, 13 White, 13 Yellow, 13 Purple and 13 Roosters.

The following 14 teams were Premiers in the 2nd half of the season: Open Green, 15A, 15 Maroon, 15 Green, 14A, 14 Red, 14 Green, 14 Yellow, 14 Orange, 13A, 13 Maroon, 13 Green, 13 Purple and 13 Roosters.

The following 14 teams were the Runners Up in the 2nd half of the season: 1sts, 17A, Open Orange, 17 Navy, 17 Blue, 15 Gold, 15 Purple, 14 Maroon, 14 Navy, 14 Purple, 14 Eels, 13 Navy, 13 Red and 13 Yellow.

Oakhill College won the ISA Champion School Shield which capped off a great season of basketball. It was good to see it return ‘home’.

Congratulations to Zane White (Year 10) who took out Junior Player of the Year and Daniel Paino (Year 12) who took out Senior Player of the Year.

Congratulations also to Max Basso, Daniel Paino, Eli Paki-Rees and Daniel Pratt (all Year 12) for making the ISA 1sts and Saxon Orsini (Year 11) for making the ISA 2nds.

I would also like to congratulate every student who participated in the 2020/2021 ISA season. You should be very proud of your achievements. Oakhill College continues to be known for its display of integrity and good sportsmanship both on and off the court. We play honestly and to our best ability each week, and opposing teams know they need to respect every Oakhill College team they come up against.

I want to highlight that such a successful season is not possible without the dedication and hard work of the Coaches, Managers, the Basketball committee, and the support of the parents, especially as COVID-19 protocols were quite limiting. Thank you to all who contributed to our success throughout the season and to all those who continue to contribute to making Basketball at Oakhill College a great sport. I know for sure I could not have done it without you. I look forward to seeing many of you again next season.
