Our Mission As a member of Dignity Health, French Hospital Medical Center partners with the community to improve the quality of life here, and dedicates resources to delivering compassionate, high-quality, affordable health services that help and advocate for our disenfranchised sisters and brothers. French Hospital Medical Center Foundation is committed to supporting the charitable and community health care mission of French Hospital Medical Center through fundraising and relationship building. The Foundation solicits philanthropic gifts, provides stewardship of these gifts, and grants funds to the hospital to advance the community’s access to health care.

Honoring our history This year, French Hospital Medical Center celebrates 75 years of providing exceptional care to the residents of San Luis Obispo.

Since French Hospital first opened its doors in 1946, the hospital has evolved to meet the needs of our growing community. From the beginning, we made a commitment to provide excellent health care for every stage of life, combining physicians from top medical schools, the latest advanced technologies, and safe, quality care for our community.

The vision of hospital founder Dr. Edison French—the dream of bringing big-city medical care to the small town of San Luis Obispo—continues to live on. Today, French Hospital is nationally recognized for safety, patient experience, cardiac care, orthopedics, stroke treatment and maternity.

French Hospital Milestones

Remembering Louis Tedone, MD As we celebrate French Hospital’s 75th anniversary, we also reflect on the legacy of Louis Tedone, MD, a beloved member of the French Hospital family who passed away in 2021.

1946

In 1953, Dr. Tedone became one of the first physicians recruited to French Hospital by its founder, Dr. Edison French, and became the first pediatrician in San Luis Obispo County. During his 45-year career, Dr. Tedone cared for over 30,000 children, influencing an entire generation of local families and personifying the carism for which French Hospital is known.

In 2006, the Foundation established the Louis Tedone, MD Humanitarian Award to honor his incredible legacy and recognize other individuals who dedicate their lives to the health and well-being of the San Luis Obispo community.

As a physician and eventually as a patient, Dr. Tedone understood the importance of high quality, local health care, inspiring him to create a lasting impact with an estate gift to French Hospital. Dr. Tedone remained an active and valued member of our hospital family until his passing. He will always be fondly remembered for his caring nature and many contributions to our community.

Beyond Health: Bringing Your New French Hospital to the Central Coast

Breaking ground on the Swanson Family Chapel On April 13, 2021, French Hospital Medical Center celebrated the groundbreaking for the Swanson Family Chapel, signifying the launch of a transformation of the existing hospital campus. The Swanson Family Chapel is the first of many Beyond Health projects that will bring Your New French Hospital to the Central Coast—a monumental expansion of services and the hospital campus.

Longtime French Hospital supporters Bill and Cheryl Swanson made a transformational gift of $2.75 million to the Beyond Health campaign, with the desire to support the healing of a patient’s body, mind, and soul. Thanks to the Swansons’ generosity, a serene interfaith chapel is being built as part of Your New French Hospital.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Swanson Family Chapel featured a small in-person gathering and a livestreamed virtual event to enable community participa-

tion during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers included Bill Swanson, Beyond Health Campaign Co-Chairs Bob Wacker and Dr. Ke-Ping Tsao and French Hospital President and CEO Alan Iftiniuk. A heartfelt blessing took place while the gathered guests broke ground on this important project.

The new chapel, which will be located near the main hospital entrance, will accommodate up to 65 people, as well as patient gurneys. The addition of this sacred space will create an inclusive sanctuary for patients and families of all beliefs to seek solace.

The chapel will feature a dramatic centerpiece of customized stained glass windows designed by world-renowned artist Elizabeth Devereaux. This exquisite artwork will create a breathtaking ambience reflecting hope and peace. The chapel will also include a majestic bell tower with a unique cast bell. Construction began shortly after the groundbreaking ceremony and completion is expected in Spring 2022.

Your New French Hospital Highlights

Your New French Hospital Project Update With the first project underway, French Hospital is finalizing plans for the remaining phases of Your New French Hospital. This incredible undertaking will transcend our facility into the hospital of the future, far exceeding the needs and expectations of our growing community through advanced technologies, highly skilled personnel and a new state-of-the-art facility.

In addition to the Swanson Family Chapel, construction has begun on the Johnson Avenue hospital entrance, in order to create traffic flow modifications to the future location of a new parking structure and Patient Care Tower. Following completion of the Johnson Avenue project, construction of the new parking structure will begin. The final and largest construction project will be the addition of the new four-story Patient Care Tower, pictured below, scheduled for completion in 2024.

The elaborate $130 million-plus project is being partially funded through the $30 million Beyond Health fundraising campaign. Nearly $15 million has been raised to date.

Going Beyond: Inspiring hope and healing through art After discovering the unique beauty and character of the Central Coast more than 25 years ago, Brad and Gretchen Wilde made Shell Beach their second home.

Passionate about the economic growth and well-being of their San Luis Obispo neighbors and friends, Brad has been involved in local non-profits including The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, 40 Prado and REACH. As longtime social purpose investors, the Wildes’ interests also include the arts and health care. When the opportunity arose to support both passions in one project—Your New French Hospital—they were excited to participate. Gretchen and Brad recently made a $300,000 gift to the Beyond Health campaign to support the creation of a public art installation

that will adorn the Gretchen & Brad Wilde Courtyard of the new Patient Care Tower.

The tower will become the new main entrance for French Hospital, so the art installation will be seen by thousands of people annually.

Gretchen and Brad are actively participating in the conceptualization of the art installation and are excited to see the project completed.

“We have fallen in love with this community, made cherished friends here, and share French Hospital’s commitment to compassionate healthcare. It is our privilege to be part of the exciting journey ahead,” says Brad.

Beyond Health Business Partners

Local organizations partner for the economic wellness and health of our community In mid 2021, the Foundation launched Beyond Health Business Partners, a new program to engage local businesses in the economic and health care growth of our community by supporting Your New French Hospital.

In addition to bringing advanced health care and medical facilities to the Central Coast, the expansion will enhance workforce wellness and impact our local economy.

Your New French Hospital will provide more than 300 new medical jobs, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, technicians and more—nearly a 50 percent increase above current staffing levels. This will result in an increase of $35 million in annual pay and benefits for non-physician staff.

Construction will also require up to 300 local workers.

Caring for cancer patients

New mental health services offered for cancer patients thanks to donor support In addition to the physical and medical challenges experienced by patients, a cancer diagnosis brings many strong emotions. For some, this emotional upheaval and stress can progress further, with nearly one in four cancer patients experiencing depression. That is why it is critical for patients to have access to increased emotional support resources.

The Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC) at French Hospital has long offered support groups and patient navigation services, but a gap in mental health services for cancer patients still existed until recently. Thanks to longtime HCRC supporters Steve and Karen Chubon, the HCRC is now filling that gap with the addition of a dedicated Social Worker. The new HCRC Social Worker has the expertise needed to better support each patient’s emotional and mental health concerns, connecting them with the resources that will benefit them most.

As a volunteer at the HCRC, Karen has seen firsthand the emotional distress that cancer patients experience.

Karen and Steve were also impacted by Karen’s mother’s cancer journey, which originally inspired their involvement with the HCRC. “I saw the emotional impact cancer had on my mother and also saw her initial hesitation to attend support groups over concern of how it looked to others,” says Karen. “But once she joined one, she saw the tremendous benefits.”

“Everyone thinks about the physical implications of a cancer diagnosis, but there is a tremendous emotional turmoil as well,” says Steve. “By enhancing mental health services, the HCRC will be able to help connect cancer patients with more of the resources they need in one place.”

By helping to make mental health services more easily accessible, the Chubons hope that more HCRC patients will get the additional emotional support they need.

Share Hope: Supporting the Hearst Cancer Resource Center with a virtual fundraising event The COVID-19 pandemic shifted the way that many things were done in our lives and nonprofit events were similarly impacted. While the Foundation has been unable to hold our traditional in-person fundraising events for 2020 and 2021, we pivoted to create something new in response to these unprecedented times.

Recognizing that cancer patients are facing a cancer journey that is even more challenging due to the pandemic, the Foundation hosted Share Hope, a virtual fundraising event benefiting the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC).

Held in October 2020, the month-long fundraiser utilized a peer-to-peer fundraising website, allowing teams and individuals to raise funds for the HCRC and for individuals to contribute to the fundraiser. The event was also supported by Event Sponsor Pacific Premier Bank and other sponsors, including Layton Construction and Cuningham Group Architecture, Films for Good and KSBY. With 22 fundraisers and 287 donors participating, the inaugural Share Hope raised more than $102,000 to support the HCRC, which offers all programs and services free of charge to cancer patients and their families.

Looking back on the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic The onset of the global coronavirus pandemic in 2020 impacted us all in ways large and small.

Our physicians, nurses, caregivers and staff have responded to the crisis in true French Hospital fashion—with commitment, compassion and dedication to caring for our community regardless of what the pandemic brings.

In turn, our community rallied behind our frontline caregivers with overwhelming support, expressing gratitude through notes of encouragement, meals, flowers and much more. The hospital also received many donations of personal protective equipment during the initial months of the pandemic as well as contributions to the Foundation’s Emergency Support Fund, which provided financial support for the hospital’s response to COVID-19.

Since March 2020, more than $865,000 in donations has been received to support our COVID-19 response.

Today, more than a year after the start of the pandemic, our caregivers and hospital staff continue to respond to pandemic surges and changes with the same level of dedication and caring.

We express our deepest admiration of our caregivers and our humble gratitude for our community’s support.

Virtual “House Calls”: Providing updates during the pandemic Shortly after the start of the pandemic, the Foundation created “House Calls,” a series of virtual Zoom conversations providing valuable information to supporters and community members during this uniquely challenging time. House Calls feature updates from French Hospital leadership and medical experts on the hospital’s response to COVID-19. To date, twelve House Calls have been held with more than 250 virtual attendees. The Foundation also bolstered outreach to our friends and supporters to help keep our community safe and informed.

Hospital staff receives gift boxes of gratitude from the community In June 2021, the Foundation distributed special gift boxes to more than 750 hospital staff members, as an expression of gratitude for the care that they have provided to our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gift boxes included stress relief items designed to provide staff with much-deserved moments of relaxation and enjoyment.

The Foundation worked with sponsors, donors, local businesses and volunteers to raise funds to support the effort and to acquire items to include in the gift boxes.

Grateful COVID-19 patient gives back In January 2021, local resident Ryan Harris came to French Hospital’s Emergency Department, suffering severe complications from COVID-19. Ryan attributes the saving of his life to the quick, expert actions of his physicians and nurses. What also impressed Ryan and his wife, Leanne, was the compassion they experienced.

“We are so thankful for the care that I received at French Hospital, but also for how much the staff genuinely cared about me and my family,” says Ryan.

The major sponsor for the project, Community West Bank, along with sponsors Collaboration Business Consulting and grateful patient Ryan and Leanne Harris, included notes of gratitude in the boxes.

Hospital employees were genuinely touched by the effort to recognize staff.

“It was just wonderful—a great surprise,” says Brittany Martinez, an Intensive Care Unit nurse.

The Harris family’s gratitude inspired them to find a way to give back to the heroic caregivers at French Hospital. Ryan and Leanne, pictured above, worked with the Foundation to find a way to directly support hospital staff, leading them to help fund special gift boxes of gratitude for all French Hospital staff members (see story at right).
