| Today, and every day, we are grateful for those who work together
a healthier future for all.
For the past 18 years, it has been my privilege to serve as the President and CEO of French Hospital. It truly has been a special journey for me, both profes sionally and personally. Each day, I continue to be impressed by the ‘carism’ that every staff member and physician displays. This has been the cornerstone of why French Hospital continues to be the hospital of choice for our communi ty, and I am so proud to have worked alongside such a superior team.
By now, you may have already heard that I am retiring in January 2023. I wish to thank our community and donors for your support of the hospital over the years. Your efforts have been instrumental in making French Hospital the excellent and compassionate facility it is today. French Hospital’s role as a health care leader will continue to grow as we bring world-class care to the community through our new, expanded facility—Your New French Hospital. We have come so far, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
President and CEOPlease know that I will be forever grateful to all of you who have made such an incredible difference in the lives of our patients.
Thank you, Alan Iftiniuk President and CEOI have also announced my retirement on November 1, 2022, after 18 years of leading the French Hospital Foundation. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our many supporters for your loyal dedication and unwaver ing support of French Hospital and the Foundation. It has been an honor to partner with you to build a strong community hospital. I feel very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to establish the Foundation in 2004 and grow it to be one of the most successful fundraising organizations in San Luis Obispo County. This has truly been a labor of love and an extraordinary journey. My heart is deeply full with gratitude for your compassionate commitment to advancing health care services for our community.
Debby Nicklas Vice President, PhilanthropyThe true cornerstone of French Hospital is our amazing caregivers who display incredible heroism every day. And philanthropy will always drive the hospital’s ability to expand services, introduce new medical technology and attract expert medical staff. I have great confidence that the Foundation will continue its success with a strong board of directors and excellent staff. I will be forever grateful to our donors, physicians, employees, volunteers and board members for their trust and friendship.
Thank you, Debby Nicklas Vice President, PhilanthropyAfter 18 years of dedicated service as the President and CEO of French Hospital Medical Center, Alan Iftiniuk will be retiring in January 2023. Alan has been instrumental in bringing technological and clinical advancements to French Hospital, and his pursuit as a community health care advocate leaves a legacy that will benefit the hospi tal’s staff, physicians, volunteers, and most importantly, its patients for years to come.

Debby Nicklas, the Vice President of the French Hospital Medical Center Foundation, will be retiring on November 1, 2022, after 18 years of provid ing strategic and operational leadership to support hospital programs and services through successful fundraising efforts.
Debby began her career with Dignity Health in 2004, where she led the establishment of the Foundation, created to support the hospital’s charitable and community health care mission through fundraising and relationship building. During her reputable tenure, the Foundation has raised more than $58 million to support new hospital facilities and equipment, new programs and services, health education, community outreach, and charity care.
Under Debby’s leadership, the French Hospital Foundation has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards, including Dignity Health Foun dation of the Year, Dignity Health Top Performing Service Area, and Dignity Health Largest Philanthropic Gift, to name a few.

Debby’s profound commitment to both French Hospital and the community in which it resides are admirable. We wish her all the best in her retirement.
On behalf of the Foundation Board, I wish to express our utmost gratitude for all that Alan Iftiniuk and Debby Nicklas have contributed to French Hospital over the past 18 years and, most importantly, for their work to sup port our patients and community.
Today, French Hospital is a nationally recognized, worldclass hospital—an incredible achievement for our Central Coast community. Together, these two dedicated leaders have guided French Hospital on a transfor mational journey that has truly elevated the quality of health care in San Luis Obispo County.
We will forever be grateful to both Alan and Debby for their dedication and commitment to our patients and working to make health care accessible for all, including the most vulnerable in our community. We wish both of them all the best in their next chapter.
5 | French Hospital Medical Center FoundationSteve Hearst, the great-grandson of William Randolph Hearst, has long been dedicated to enhancing health care services for patients on the Central Coast, due to his personal connection and his family’s historic ties to the area.
Together with his family and the Hearst Foundations, Steve made the initial contributions that enabled French Hospital to establish the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC) in 2008. Since that time, he has continued to provide significant support for the HCRC, including host ing the Foundation’s annual Share the Hope fundraiser and providing leadership on the Foundation’s HCRC Advisory Committee.
After learning about the Beyond Health Campaign and the enhanced levels of care Your New French Hospital will provide local residents, Steve Hearst and his wife, Barbara, became interested in supporting the effort.
Among the new additions to the hospital will be a heliport, located on top of a new parking structure on the hospital campus. This new heliport will significantly reduce the time needed to transport trauma patients and patients in critical condition to and from the hospital, improving care outcomes and saving lives. Inspired by the impact that the heliport will have for patients, the Hearsts made a generous $500,000 contribution. In recognition of the gift, the new heliport will be named the Hearst Heliport.
The Hearst Foundations also recently awarded a $250,000 grant to support the Beyond Health cam paign.
“French Hospital has always impressed me with the way they care for the Central Coast community,” says Steve. “The new expansion of the hospital, including the heli port, is an important next step in continuing that legacy. Barbara and I are honored to be a part of bringing a new level of care to local patients.”
Humanity lights the way.
Hearst family goes Beyond Health to support critical patients with the new Hearst HeliportThe Hearst Heliport will be located on top of a new parking structure at Your New French Hospital.
During a hospital tour in 2022, local resident Diana Beaudry had the opportunity to meet with hospital caregivers and leaders to learn about patient services and the Beyond Health campaign. She recalls being immediately impressed by the staff’s warmth and dedication to caring for patients, in addition to their expertise.
Her visit inspired her to make a significant gift to support the new Stan & Barbara Clark Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that is part of Your New French Hospital. The NICU features individual neonatal suites to provide families with added privacy, increased opportunity for bonding and allow parents to room overnight with their critical care newborns. A portion of her gift will also support the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC) Endowment. In recognition of her generosity, a wing in the new NICU will be named the Beaudry Wing and the HCRC multipurpose room will be named the Beaudry Multipurpose Room.
“For patients, it’s so important that excellent care can be received locally, but also delivered compassionately and with kindness,” says Diana. “I’m honored to be a part of bringing the new NICU to our community and to support local cancer patients through the HCRC.”

John Couch, one of UC Berkeley’s first computer science graduates, was Apple’s 54th employee. He eventually became its first Vice President of Software and, later, the first Vice President of Education. Following his career at Apple, he pursued other business ventures and coauthored several books.
After recently relocating to the Central Coast, John was introduced to French Hospital and learned about the Beyond Health campaign. He became interested in supporting the campaign after learning about the impact
Your New French Hospital will have on local health care, especially with the increased focus on including holistic healing spaces in the design of the expansion.
Healing spaces are being incorporated throughout the
new campus, aimed at supporting the emotional, mental and spiritual needs of patients and families.
John made a $500,000 gift in support of these new healing spaces, including a meditation room and a serenity garden located adjacent to the main lobby in the new Patient Care Tower, for ease of access by patients, visitors and staff.
His generosity will be recognized with the naming of the Mary Lou Couch Meditation Room and Serenity Garden, in memory of his late mother Mary Lou Couch, who passed away in 2021.
“I am honored to support French Hospital and its vision for the future,” says John. “And I am truly touched to name this important healing space in recognition of my mother. She was a deeply spiritual woman and to honor her in this way is very meaningful to our family.”

John Couch is making a positive impact on his new hometown of San Luis Obispo. Our Beyond Health Business Partners program engages local businesses in the health care growth and economic well-being of our community by supporting Your New French Hospital. In addition to bringing advanced health care and medical facilities to the Central Coast, the expansion will enhance workforce wellness and impact our local economy.
In the first year of the program, several prominent local businesses have become Business Partners, including Collaboration Business Consulting, Glenn Burdette, Morris & Garritano Insurance Agency, Promega Biosciences, RRM Design Group, and SESLOC Federal Credit Union. Below, two of these businesses share why they support the Beyond Health campaign for Your New French Hospital.
“Access to high-quality health care is extremely important for our employees and our entire community,” says Geri LaChance, SESLOC President and CEO (pictured at right). “Hospital facilities updated with state-of-the-art technology provide greater opportunities for recruiting highly specialized physicians and medical teams, improving the landscape of local health care for the long term. SESLOC wanted to be part of this significant transformation.”
“We provide peace of mind to our clients during life’s hard moments, much like French Hospital does for their patients and family members,” says Kerry Morris, Chief Operating Officer and Principal of Morris & Garritano (pictured at right). “By supporting the Beyond Health Campaign, we are able to help ensure that high-quality, compassionate, and accessible care is available to the members of our community now and for generations to come.”

Maria Osegueda, a young mother of four, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. As she was uninsured and already facing financial challenges, her cancer diagnosis brought new difficulties, including how to obtain the care she needed and address the language barrier she faced as a primarily Spanishspeaking patient.
When Maria (left) first heard about the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC), which offers all services thanks to donor support, as well as bilingual services, she finally felt that she would be able to get the help she needed. She met with the HCRC’s bilingual Patient Navigator, Eloisa Medina (right), and felt hopeful for the first time. Eloisa helped Maria access services including diagnostic testing, transportation, and Spanish translation services at medical appointments, as well as connecting Maria with other resources to help her navigate her diagnosis and treatment. Today, Maria has been in remission for two years and remains incredibly grateful for the services she received.
“The HCRC helped me understand my diagnosis by providing translation services and gave me hope I didn’t have before,” says Maria. “I wish I had the words to express how important it is to cancer patients like me to have the HCRC and all of the services it offers. Cancer doesn’t stop, so it’s critical for people, especially those without means, to have access to these services. I’m so grateful for the HCRC, and I hope that our community will continue to support the HCRC and local cancer patients.”
After experiencing the loss of her newborn daughter Greta Lynn in 2017, Ashley Agnitch (right) sought a way to support other grieving parents. After researching bereavement resources, Ashley, a labor and delivery nurse at French Hospital, decided to raise funds for a Cuddle Cot—a cooling bassinet used after a newborn’s passing to provide families with the gift of additional time for bonding and saying goodbye. In February 2022, in honor of her daughter’s mem ory, Ashley donated the proceeds to French Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of a Cuddle Cot for the hospital’s Stollmeyer Family Birthing Center. Thanks to Ashley’s efforts and kindness, our Cuddle Cot is now available to support families in their time of grief.

On April 2, 2022, 150 guests gathered together for Share the Hope, our first inperson event since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were thrilled to be back together after a three-year hiatus. Held at Hearst Ranch in San Simeon, the event raised funds to support the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC), which offers all programs and services to cancer patients and their families.
The evening began with a special champagne reception at the historic Senator’s House (pictured above). The night continued at the Hearst Ranch Dairy Barn with a gourmet dinner, live music and an exciting live auction.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and guests, $460,000 was raised to support the HCRC Endowment, ensuring that the HCRC will be able to provide services to local cancer patients for years to come.
The 13th annual French Cup Golf Tourna ment, held on June 13, 2022, at the San Luis Obispo Country Club, raised more than $75,000 to support the Beyond Health campaign for Your New French Hospital.
More than 140 golfers participated in the tournament. While out on the course, golfers enjoyed delicious food and drink from Ciopinot Seafood Grille, La Esquina Taqueria, KROBAR Craft Distillery, Hotel SLO, and Rod & Hammer. The winning golf team from Ciopinot Seafood Grille took home the highly acclaimed French Cup medals created by Malcolm DeMille, designer of the PGA Tour trophy.
The French Cup was sponsored by Mus tangs Sports Properties, with other major sponsors including Pacific Premier Bank, J.W. Design & Construction, Glenn Bur dette, Wicks Roofing, and Sunset Honda.

He was recognized for personifying humankindness and for his dedication to our community when he was presented with the Foundation’s Humanitarian Award in 2012.

Over the years, he made significant gifts to the Intensive Care Unit, the Hearst Cancer Resource Center, and the “French—Well into the Future” campaign. Most recently, his dedication to ensuring that the San Luis Obispo com munity has access to world-class care led him to make a significant gift to support the Beyond Health campaign for Your New French Hospital. Jim established a lasting legacy at French Hospital through a generous bequest from his estate. We will always remember Jim for his many contributions to our community, French Hospital and our patients.

At French Hospital Medical Center Foundation, a diverse group of donors support our work through a variety of ways—annual donations, grants, planned and estate gifts, events and more. We, and the patients we serve, are forever grateful for their support.
Donations, both large and small, enable the Foundation to provide cutting-edge technology, build and support health education and community outreach programs, support those who cannot afford health care, provide vital patient programs and support improvements in patient care quality and safety.
While for-profit organizations distribute surplus revenue to shareholders or owners, not-for-profit organizations invest these earnings back into their organizations to further achieve their mission and goals. As a not-forprofit hospital, French Hospital Medical Center reinvests profits back into the hospital and into our community by providing community benefits programs and charity care.
French Hospital Medical Center covers all Foundation operating costs, which means that donor funds are never used to pay for any administrative costs. Because of this, 100% of your donation stays local and benefits our community by going directly to where it is needed most—patient care, programs and services.
