French Camp Academy, a Christ-centered home and school, exists to serve young people and families for the glory of God.
The world defines current culture by its accompanying traits. Whether politically, sexually, or spiritually, the American culture has recently acquired countless laws and practices aimed to make everyone “happy.” However, French Camp Academy recognizes that rather than focusing on what mankind needs to add to civilization, it is imperative that we spotlight and reestablish a lacking keystone quality: Christian worldview.
Over the past four and a half years, my greatest gain has undeniably been the Christian outlook that saturates every element of the French Camp community. The widespread shared initiative that emphasizes abiding in Christ over idle legalism has taught me what it truly means to live Heaven-minded. The staff at French Camp are unlike any other. “Practice what you preach” is an ordinary adage that rings incredibly true for the extraordinary staff who have been called to the Academy. Pivotally, instead of confining Biblical teaching solely to designated class periods, teachers and administrators abundantly display God’s grace and love through their actions day in and day out. The most impactful role models in my life are French Camp staff because their lives continuously demonstrate the profound joy and purpose found in allowing God’s will to be accomplished through them. To see what it looks like to “pray ceaselessly” and to walk with the Lord, I need to look no further than to my teachers. As creation flees further and further from God’s will, French Camp Academy equips its students to resist the devil and effectively operate from a Christian worldview. v
Outside of the classroom learning does not get as much credit as it should. I have learned to step out of my comfort zone and be open to opportunities. I have never played tennis in my life, but this year I decided to go out for it. I made the team and started learning about the game and how to play it. It showed me a community that is very welcoming and open. I realized that it improved my communication skills and gave me relationships.
I learned something new this year, and it challenged me to work for what I want. If I want to be good at tennis I need to work for it. Therefore, I took extra time to practice and time away from friends to focus on something I was passionate about learning. Learning outside of the classroom can help others learn to communicate, step out of their comfort zone, and even provide them with relationships that may last them a lifetime.
I appreciate the opportunity this sport gave me to learn that I love to play tennis. It gave me a new passion and a new way to learn. I felt I have not been myself recently and being competitive helps me come out of my shell. It helps me improve my way of thinking through strategy and become more competitive. v
My wife, Anne Katherine, and I came to serve at FCA 20 years ago. Ed Williford, my predecessor and Vice President of Development back then, was used by God to woo me to FCA through stories he shared of changed lives. I was captivated by the mission at that time, and still am.
Today I continue to marvel at God’s incredible work of redemption in the lives of children and teenagers. House parents in many ways become surrogate parents for children who come out of less-than-ideal situations. Many young people, for the first time in their lives, hear a Christian perspective of history, math, biology, etc., in the classroom. Worldviews are reshaped. Young people learn basic life skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Others gain work experiences that shape their career choices. Most importantly, young people hear the most important message the world has ever heard. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is presented consistently. It is shared publicly and is lived out by each who is called to serve at FCA.
Through deliberate programming, relationship building, and the prayers of many, French Camp Academy continues to be a beacon of hope to a population of people who often go unnoticed. The outcome is the same—lives are being changed through the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
This edition of FCA Today is special to me as we highlight our graduates. We award them a high school diploma that is accredited through the MS Depart-
ment of Education. Also, this edition focuses on our desire to teach from a Biblical world and life view. That is important to us.
French Camp TODAY (USPS 210-100) is published quarterly in March, June, September and December each year by French Camp Academy, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Lance RagsdaleWhat you do not see and cannot measure are countless hours that Christ-centered adults poured into the ones featured in this paper. Late night conversations about the stuff of life, emotionally charged issues about home life or relationships gone sour, and many other topics are used to transform the hearts and minds of those who live and learn with us. Classroom discussions get interesting, too. Many of our young people come from academic settings that do not acknowledge the sovereignty and authority of God in our lives. Old beliefs are challenged, and the claims of the Bible are presented consistently and faithfully.
Many of you who read FCA Today help make this redemptive process happen 12 months out of the year. Thank you! Coming right behind the smiling faces of the graduates listed in this paper are many more who will experience life changing conversations and activities this summer, fall, next spring, and so forth. Your faithful support and prayers fuel our mission yearround. For that I cannot thank you enough!
For 30 years, Lisa has served French Camp Academy in various roles spreading a spirit of helpfulness by working behind the scenes where much needed work goes unnoticed. Lisa graduated in 1987 from FCA, then later married Warren, Class of 1980. Besides processing thousands of donations every year in the Finance Office, you will hear Lisa’s kind voice most mornings on WFCA, a Christcentered FM radio station owned and operated by FCA. Prior to working in the Finance Department, Lisa was a former senior class sponsor, former high school janitor, and former President of the FCA Alumni Association. She has served on the Executive Committee of the FCA Alumni Association for the past 10 years as membership Committee chairperson. Lisa and Warren have adult children who graduated from FCA, Taffi, Terry, and Travis and have 3 grandchildren.v

We are committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment in which our students can grow into the men and women Christ made them to be.
From the beginning of the application process we ask the Lord for direction and wisdom regarding each applicant and the decision-makers of French Camp Academy. We understand the truth: “unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” As you consider possible ministry at FCA we ask you to join us in praying that God’s will is accomplished.

For the 2022-23 school year, we had the opportunity to revive the French Camp Academy newspaper in the new Journalism class. With the last documented FCA newspaper in the seventies or eighties, our journalism class was excited to take on the new challenge and really make it our own. The class consisted of ten students of various ages, backgrounds, and talents. When we each utilized our God-given talents, our class was able to collaborate and create something really special. Each newspaper was packed with crazy pictures, staff shoutouts, engaging articles, and funny tidbits. Ms. Anne Clair Serio was our fearless leader, and she challenged and encouraged us to think outside the box and do our very best. Through Journalism, we have had the awesome opportunity to channel our creativity alongside close friends and give back to our school. We hope it is something that continues for many more years and sparks an outlet for many of our future students. v
Elijah (Eli) J. Arrowood, a graduate of French Camp Academy (2023), was recently honored by the presentation of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Eli, the son of Sarah and Steven Arrowood, House Parents in Moriah Home, came to French Camp as an 8-year-old and quickly got involved in scouting and rose through the ranks rapidly. During his scouting career, Eli served in leadership positions including Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, and Librarian. As for his time on the “trail,” Eli has spent over 100 camping nights, 125 miles hiking, and completed over 120 hours of service time. In 2019, he and 11 others ventured to Cimmaron, New Mexico, and completed one of the most arduous 50-mile hiking excursions offered at Philmont National Scout Ranch. During this hike, his crew scaled one of the ten steepest mountains in the United States (Black Mtn, elevation 10,889 ft). In addition to the rank of Eagle, Eli also earned 4 Eagle Palms, (2 Bronze, 1 Gold, and 1 Silver) showing that he completed 20 additional merit badges than required for Eagle (a total of 41). In the Fall, Eli will be attending Itawamba Community College to study Elementary Education with the desire to attend either the University of Tennessee or Mississippi State University to complete his higher education. v

Kim Hosket
Have you ever tried to focus the lens of an old 35-millimeter camera? Those tools are almost obsolete today because of digital cameras and smart phone camera technology that focuses the world for you.
In the world of ideas, morality, and values, life can feel like an old camera. If you don’t know how to focus the lens, all you see are fuzzy images. Young people are bombarded with thousands of messages competing for their time and energy. “Be what you feel” or “dress however you want!” Living life can feel like walking through a murky, muddy swamp as they experience adolescence, find their unique purpose, and maintain relationships with the people that matter to them. It can leave a typical teenager feeling fuzzy about everything!
A “worldview” is simply the way we think about the world. Everyone has a worldview regardless if you think about it or not. It’s your set of core beliefs that define you as a person, and it shapes how you look at God, yourself, and the world using this lens.
French Camp Academy makes deliberate efforts to bring into focus all of life by helping young people develop a Christ-focused worldview. Teachers, house parents, and support staff engage in meaningful discussions to help young people grapple with Scripture and apply it to all of life. God has given us all we need to make sense out of this broken world. v

The Midsouth Star Gaze and Astronomy Conference was one of the best this year with great weather most of the week and outstanding presentations by our guest speakers. An exciting conference was enjoyed with lots of fellowship, sightseeing, telescope observing, and imaging. Fascinating presentations were given by professional astronomers and others such as galaxy researcher, Dr. William Keel from the University of Alabama, Astro photographer and retired “Hurricane Hunter” Jon Talbot, NASA recognized retired teacherlecturer-Astro photographer and Association of Lunar and Planetary observers (A.L.P.O.) Lunar Recorder, Dave Teske!
We had a couple of exciting bonuses during the conference including an outstanding presentation by Jim Tucker, one of the primary design engineers and builders of the James Webb Space Telescope! The other was a live remote-control observing session of the Southeastern Association for Research in Astronomy (SARA) telescope all the way down in Cerro Tololo, Chile, South America by Dr. William Keel. He facilitated live direct imaging with this powerful telescope from the office-classroom here at Rainwater Observatory. This may be a first for this facility! v

Make plans to gather with other Alumni during Harvest Festival, October 14 and then again next Alumni Day on May 4, 2024. We hope to see you here in French Camp!
French Camp Academy has been known for producing delicious bread since the days of Sam Patterson when he became FCA President in 1950. Back in those days, “Mr. Pat” would ask the Dining Hall Staff to produce loaves of bread that he gave away to FCA donors. Through the years this idea multiplied! FCA gives away and sells thousands of loaves of bread every year.
The FCA Bakery has been at its present location at the FCA Welcome Center on Main Street since 1998. The existing table that is used for kneading and shaping the dough was put into use at that same time. “This bread table has seen a lot of dough in its time, but through wear and tear and well over 500,000 loaves of bread, the table has suffered a fatal crack and was in desperate need of replacement,” says Kevin O’Brien, FCA Bread Baker. The new bakery bread table arrived a few weeks ago and now it’s time to retire the old table with honor.
The retired bread table will be cut into cutting boards (approximately 12”x17”) that will be embossed with a commemorative logo to recognize its many years of service. A limited edition of these cutting boards will be auctioned at Harvest Festival in French Camp on October 14, 2023.
Kevin O’Brien was recently featured on Walt Grayson’s Mississippi Roads on PBS (Scan the QR code to the right to see feature). He has been baking FCA bread since 2011, producing over 167,000 loaves. In addition to the FCA white bread, he also makes sorghum wheat bread, six types of sourdough bread, two kinds of whole grain bread, cinnamon rolls, cinnamon raisin bread, three savory sauces that are featured in the FCA Council House Restaurant, creole seasoning, six flavors of cookies including our newest flavor—What’s Up Butter Cup? and finally, five flavors of locally produced jam. You may purchase these items on loacation at the Welcome Center bakery on Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. What a wonderful reason to plan a trip to French Camp and tour the area while you are here!
Mrs. Annie Carter was the Chief Baker for 25 years (19862011) perfecting the homemade white bread recipe that FCA is famously known for. She, along with Mrs. Louella Miller produced over 234,000 loaves of
bread on the table that is being retired. Prior to 1998, these two ladies and others on Mrs. Ruby Stevens’ dining hall staff, baked the bread in the dining hall. No one knows how many loaves of delicious white bread were baked over the years! Needless to say, countless loaves found their way into the hands of friends of French Camp who help support and build the mission with young people we enjoy today.
So, remember to save the date—October 14, 2023! You will have the opportunity at Harvest Festival to bid on one of these special cutting boards! We look forward to seeing you there! v
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.— 1 John 4:1
