Works of ART by the Potter
By Sheila Stone“The Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. Arise and go down to the potter’s house … so I went down to the potter’s house and there he was working on his wheel and the vessel he was making was spoiled in the potter’s hand, so he reworked it into another vessel as seemed good to the potter to do.” Jeremiah 18:1-4
But this is not the pottery shop of Jeremiah’s day. The purpose of making pots, however, is still the same, these thousands of years later. The only difference—the biblical pots were functional; the modern pots are decorative, having a unique beauty, determined by the hand of the potter. Their patterns are in stark black and white, thus lending them to any color scheme. They come in all shapes and sizes, some tall and graceful, others short and squat, but they all bear one thing in common: they are all pots.
This modern-day potter is Susan Donald who daily presides over the French Camp Pottery and her works are regularly displayed in the Gift Shop on campus.

When I met Susan she was preparing the next pots for decoration. Clad in jeans and enormous blacksmith gloves, she was pulling a pot out of a kiln where it had been heated to 1700 degrees. She then set the pot, literally smoking hot, on a small metal plate set into a wooden table where her decorative items lay—horsehair from the Camp of the Rising Son stables and feathers from her own chickens. She began with a small tangle of horsehair, gently pulling it into a fine mesh-like pattern and laying this “design” on the pot where it blackened and instantly burned onto the pot. She followed with the chicken feathers, using only the downy part that grows close to the body. These too blackened as part of the pattern. The patterns of horsehair and feathers must be applied while the pot is still smoking. Her last touch is to sprinkle a little sugar which caramelizes into the design. If the pot is not hot enough, it may crack. Even if the crack is only hairline, her trained eye sees it at once.
Often she has students with her, making other forms of pottery. Only Susan works with the black and white designs. The students learn to make pinch pots in which an amount of clay is pinched by the fingers into shape, usually a small bowl or saucer. Or they can choose to do rolled pottery, in which a lump of clay is rolled flat with a rolling pin, much as a baker would roll out a pie crust. Rolled clay works well to make flat bottomed mugs.

As I watched and listened, while Susan talked and worked, I thought of French Camp and its work with children of all ages. Like the pots, they begin life at French Camp as lumps of clay. Like the pots, they will emerge under Master Potter’s watchful eye at the hands of His faithful stewards. Some will be pinched, some will be cast on the wheel, and some will be rolled out, but they will all have God’s design stamped on them. Only He knows the clay and only He knows the right pattern, each pattern picked for the individual child. He knows when to apply the heat that the image might be permanent, from beginning to end. As each one comes—some are Jeremiah’s spoiled pots needing to be remade, some are commercial clay bought from worldly surroundings, and some are wild clay dug from the earth— but they will all be fashioned in the Master’s image, designed for His use. v

President's Perspective
Living Each Day with the End in Mind
One of the habits of successful people that Stephen R. Covey teaches is to begin with the end in mind. This is the second habit he outlines in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He suggests that we should have a clear vision of our desired destination and align our actions with our values. I had a funny reminder of this habit last week when I went to get a haircut.
As the barber finished trimming my hair, I asked him how much I owed him. He looked at me for a second and then replied, “how old are you?” as he pointed to a sign that said, “Senior Discount $5.” I quickly told him that I’m only 53. This was not the first time I’ve been offered the senior discount. I laughed it off and found myself sharing this story with my colleagues later. The reality though is that I am getting older and so are you. It made me think about how time flies and how I want to spend the rest of my life.
Peter’s Message for Believers
The apostle Peter had a similar message for the Christians who were facing trials and temptations in a hostile world. He wrote in his second letter, “You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming … So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with him.” Peter wanted them to grow in their relationship with God and be prepared for the return of Christ. That is my goal too. I want to live more intentionally in the second half of my life. I want to listen more attentively to God and others. I want to clear my mind of distractions and focus on what matters. I want to be open to what God has for me each day. I need Him to transform me into His likeness through His Word and His people. I need to become more like Him.
Thankfulness

I am grateful that because I have accepted Jesus as my Savior, His Holy Spirit lives in me and changes me from the inside out. As Peter Reid said, “He gave His life for me so that He might give His life to me. The same Spirit that brought a dead man’s life out of a tomb lives in me!” He is doing a work in me that I could not do on my own, and He is giving me a purpose and a meaning that I would not have otherwise. He is giving me a new mission statement that includes living with the end in mind. For me, that means investing in things that have eternal value.
Reflection
What about you? What do your thoughts and actions reveal about your priorities and values? I encourage you to live each day with the end in mind—an end that is full of the good things that God has promised and prepared for those who trust in Him. This is the vision we have for all our young people at French Camp Academy. We want to show them the love of God through authentic biblical relationships. We want to help them live in the freedom of Christ and to live victoriously with the end in mind.
Thank You
As we head toward graduation with another great group of seniors, we give God thanks for all of you that help keep us pushing forward with the end in mind.

Mission Statement
French Camp Academy, a Christcentered home and school, exists to serve young people and families for the glory of God.

Carrie Browning is the Chief Operating Officer of FCA, where she has worked for more than 15 years. She previously led Camp of the Rising Son, an FCA ministry, as its organizing Director. She holds a degree from the University of Mississippi and is married to Dr. Greg, a physician in Kosciusko, MS. They have three daughters—Katie Grace, an FCA alumna, Emalee (12th grade), and Olivia (10th grade). The family loves to go on medical mission trips to Haiti and volunteer at the Camp of the Rising Son every summer. v
French Camp Academy Student Awarded
Boston McCrory, an FCA senior from Kosciusko, recently took the first step in winning a local scholarship totaling $250 in awards from the Kosciusko VFW. Greyce Powell, who serves as Commander VFW Post 1983 and Commander MS VFW District 6, along with David White, the coordinator for the Essay programs at Post 1983 in Kosciusko, MS, were present to award Boston both the “Voice of Democracy” award and the District 6 scholarship award ($150).
The VFW has a scholarship program for grades 6-8 called “Patriot’s Pen” and the “Voice of Democracy” for grades 9-12. Students compete at the Post Level (local) and winners will go on to compete Districtwide. Winners proceed to a state competition, then on to a national competition. The National Scholarship is $30,000. v

FCA Teacher Competes on Survivor

CBS’s Survivor has been one of the signature reality television series for more than 45 seasons over 23 years. The game, known by the motto, “outwit, outplay, outlast,” has a French Camp Academy teacher vying to be the last one on the Island. Hunter McKnight, FCA graduate, teacher, and coach, is participating on Season 46 which began its weekly series on Wednesday, February 28. You can follow Hunter’s progress on Survivor on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. CST.
Hunter has brought a version of the game to students and staff at FCA in recent years. Team building, trust, perseverance, and strategic thinking are developed by FCA students in the twice annual competition.
Now Hunter has stepped into the reality of Survivor on CBS with a commitment to see it through to the end! v

Created for Work
By Lance RagsdaleIf you have followed FCA for any length of time, you probably learned along the way that helping young people learn life-skills and a good ole fashion work ethic is something we take seriously. Why is that important to us?

Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it—Genesis 2:7-9, 15.
Before Adam and Eve fell into sin they were given work to do by God. Contrary to popular belief, work is not a result of sin. It is part of God’s design for people. The word “cultivate” carries the idea of care or protection. God put Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden to work for its care, development, and preservation.
Think about this with me: You and I were created to work.
God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth” —Genesis 1:27-28.

From the garden to the world, we are to reflect God’s image by creating beauty and order everywhere we go.
Back in college I learned in an Old Testament class that this is called the “cultural mandate.” God’s order to us is to create culture. Create families. Create cities. Create language. Create art, music, food, and anything and everything that creates godly culture. God wants us, mandates us, to saturate life and culture with the beauty and love of God.
Why does FCA take work seriously? We have a passion to flood our culture with equipped young people who have been embraced by a Christian world and life view and steadily work to transform every area of life for the glory of God. v

Remembering a Volunteer on Mission at FCA

Bruce Beswick, a faithful volunteer up to his Homegoing in January at the age of 58, was born with Down’s Syndrome. His parents resolved to raise him with God’s help and give him every opportunity possible in life. He grew up working on a dairy farm and learned from his dad how to operate the tractor, the skip loader, and many other valuable tasks around the farm. After selling the dairy farm in 2000, the Beswick’s traveled nationwide serving with Mobile Missionary Assistance Program as volunteers building churches and doing projects for Christian camps and congregations around the country.
Shortly after his father’s death in 2008, Bruce and his mom, Jane, found their new home in French Camp serving as volunteers for French Camp Academy—Jane in the business office and Bruce on the maintenance team.
Bruce loved people. He never met a stranger and was always ready to greet you with “I like you!” along with a big smile and a warm hug. He was a favorite among the students for his enthusiastic support of the FCA Panthers. He could always be found at home football games among the cheerleaders with his “Bruce-a-phone” giving out his Panther yell! His joy and enthusiasm for life were contagious.

Volunteering at French Camp Academy can be a meaningful experience that shapes you and influences others for the cause of Christ. If you or your church would like to begin a conversation about volunteering at FCA, please give Lance Ragsdale a call at 662-547-6482. v
Billy Wayne Campbell Scholarship Fund
By Lance RagsdaleWhen Sara Campbell called to let us know that she wanted to do something special for her husband at FCA, I was naturally curious. As we continued to talk on the phone, she said her husband had passed away. One of the many things she remembered of him is that he had many won derful stories of FCA as a child attending school.

As we continued to talk on the phone, she said that Billy would love knowing that funds were set aside to help young people attend French Camp Academy. She launched the Billy Wayne Campbell Scholarship Fund in memory of her late husband and FCA graduate. Every year, 5% of the fund will be used to support FCA scholarships.

New Passenger Vans

Thanks to the generosity of many Ministry Partners and supporters of French Camp Academy, new passenger vans were purchased for house parents to use when taking young people on trips. The new vans are large enough to accommodate a home full of young people without a separate vehicle being taken. One house parent said, “Having these vans has been amazing! They are a huge asset to our ministry. We were the first student home to use them on a beach trip and were riding in comfort and style! The ability to travel all together allows us to experience life in unique ways that weren’t possible before. We play games, belt out songs together, and bond in new ways. Thank you for helping provide for our ministry in this way.”
French Camp Academy is grateful for Ministry Partners like you who give and pray for its needs. No doubt about it, God will supply your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus—Philippians 4:19. v

Pottery Students Showcased
Friends of the Library, an organization affiliated with the Choctaw County Library in Ackerman, MS, hosted an event focusing on the creative arts. Schools in the Choctaw County school district were invited to participate. Two FCA high school students were able to take part by presenting pottery they created with the help of Susan Donald, FCA potter and former house parent. v

Horses have been around a long time at French Camp Academy. For close to 40 years staff members affiliated with the FCA Horse Program have leveraged our large 4-legged, hoofed friends to help many children and teenagers learn responsibility, overcome fears, and have good ole fashioned, trail-riding FUN! The tradition continues with Anna Warren, FCA’s newest Farm and Horse Program Manager.
Not Just Horsin’ Around!

Anna is on staff with French Camp Academy and facilitates the Horse Program through Camp of the Rising Son, an FCA ministry that serves over 1300 children every summer. The number one requested activity during CRS summer camp is horse back riding. As you can imagine, Anna’s team kicks up a lot of dust facilitating fun on trails and in its 38,000 square-foot, covered riding arena.
Horses have always held a special place in Anna’s heart. She grew up choosing and training horses for a Therapeutic Riding Center in north Mississippi that provided OT & PT on horseback for disabled children and adults. The passion for connecting children with horses is what fuels her vision for the Horse Program at FCA.
Anna says, Whatever program we offer 4-H, assisted therapy from our on-campus counselors, summer camp activities, trail rides, lessons, etc., I believe the Lord called me to FCA to bring others into the fold of loving and connecting with these particular pieces of His creation. Through caring for horses young people learn responsibility, emotional connection, and skill building. They gain confidence (and very often, healing) as they learn to control a large animal … and even more so if they learn to compete in horse shows

Anna aims to teach all aspects of horsemanship from the animal to the facility and everything in-between. Eventually students will take more ownership in the program and learn how to host events experiencing ‘real world’ hospitality, facility management, public relations, and more. They will even learn how to create a revenue stream to fund their passions and horsemanship.

How to Give
If you would like to participate in the FCA Horse Program by contributing to its activities and programs, scan the QR code to make a donation on Camp of the Rising Son’s secure giving portal. With your smart phone or computer, you will have an option to support the Horse Program. If writing a check is your method, that sounds good to us! Make your gift out to Camp of the Rising Son and earmark it for the Horse Program on the ‘memo’ section of your check. Mail it to Camp of the Rising Son, One Fine Place, French Camp, MS, 39745.

Inaugural FCA Bake-Off
Our first French Camp Academy Bake-Off was a thrilling competition between 11 teams of students. They had 2 hours to mix, bake, and decorate their cakes, which were then evaluated by Mr. Grady Henderson (Assistant Principal, Coach, and FCA Graduate) and a group of qualified student judges who passed a tough screening process. The judges did not know which cake belonged to which team, and they praised the cakes with words such as delicious, moist, and yummy! v

$1,000,000 Challenge Gift

We are excited to share with you a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on FCA. One of our loyal FCA Ministry Partners has generously offered to match every dollar we raise up to $1,000,000. This is the first time in FCA history that we have received such a challenge!
We are grateful for your regular support of FCA, but we need your extra help to reach this $1,000,000 goal. Would you prayerfully consider making a special gift to the FCA Challenge Gift Campaign to help us reach the goal? You can choose any fund you like, such as the general scholarship fund, an existing endowment fund, a student home, or any other project that you care about, and your gift will be matched for capital improvements. For example, if you give $1,000 to the Observatory Fund, another $1,000 will go towards building new facilities on campus. Whatever you decide to give, you can be sure that your donation will have an additional impact toward campus improvements.
As you know, FCA has been serving young people for many years and our campus facilities need some major upgrades. We have several new projects planned, such as a new gymnasium, softball field, staff homes, field house, student center, and more. These improvements will enhance the quality of life and ministry for our students and staff.
Please join us in the FCA Challenge Gift Campaign and make a difference with your donation. If you have any questions, please contact Lance Ragsdale at 662-547-6482.
Thank you for your prayerful consideration, partnership, and generosity! v

A Planned Gift to FCA
Small effort, BIG difference—Just a small effort on your part can make a BIG difference in our mission of providing Gospel hope and healing to children and teenagers. The goal of planned giving is to help you plan your estate and charitable giving in a way that benefits you, your family, and French Camp Academy. There are many ways you can make a planned gift to French Camp Academy and enjoy tax benefits. Three common vehicles include:
WELCH, JIMMY DON
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tollison

• Bequest—Gifts made through a will or living trust are the most popular. You can leave a specific asset, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after you have taken care of other beneficiaries.
• Gift Annuities—A simple contract, you agree to make a donation of cash, stocks or other assets to French Camp Academy. In return, you (and someone else, if you choose) receive a fixed amount each year for the rest of your lifetime.
• Life Insurance—Gifting your life insurance policy is an effective way to leverage the support you provide French Camp Academy. If your policy is no longer needed or will not benefit your survivors, please consider gifting it to us.
For more information on how to include French Camp Academy in your estate plans or if you would like a free Estate Planning Guide, please email Lance Ragsdale at lragsdale@frenchcamp.org or call 662-547-6482. v

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.— 1 Corinthians 15:10 ESV
This is an abbreviated account of how French Camp Academy, French Camp Presbyterian Church, and The Rev. Sam Patterson, et. al., influenced my life during my formative years, and, consequently, during my years as an adult.
My purpose for writing this is to challenge other FCA graduates to share your stories about how FCA prepared you to live your life. My prayer is that these “sharings” will also provide strongly expressed encouragement and appreciation to current members of the FCA Board, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and fellow alumni for the benefits we have received from our time at FCA.
I consider my life to be the result of God orchestrating an inter-woven influence on me by significant individuals in my church and school.
Consider the following:
In the years leading up to 1950, French Camp Academy experienced a number of struggles, one of which was insufficient operating funds.
In 1950, the Rev. Sam Patterson was called by God, through the Board of Trustees of FCA, to become the school’s President. He was a man of faith-filled prayer and it wasn’t very long before he shared with the Trustees, the faculty, and the student body, that FCA now had an endowment.

Will you give to support the FCA Softball Field Project?
Already, approximately $30,000 has been raised toward our $50,000 goal. Please help us finish our goal by April 9, the last home softball game of the season.
French Camp Academy Alumni Association is raising funds for the Panther Softball Team. All funds raised will benefit the renovation of the softball field and dugouts. When making an online donation, be sure to type a note in the provided field stating that your gift is designated for the Alumni Softball Field Project

Obviously everyone thought he meant a financial endowment. But to their surprise, he said, “The endowment of FCA is Philippians 4:19, which says, “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Remember, I said that he was a man of faith-filled prayer. E.g., when there was a pressing need he would inform the Trustees and on some occasions he would also inform the student body, of which I was a member. He would pray with us; then he would challenge us to continue praying while he went to find the needed items and/or funds. I don’t remember him ever coming back “empty-handed.” I’m sure there were times when several search trips were involved. Nevertheless, God’s answers to our “capitalizing” on Philippians 4:19 is a prominent part of the history of French Camp Academy, and these examples of God’s faithfulness have stimulated me to trust Him and His promise for the needs of my life.
“Mr. Pat,” as Sam came to be called, was also a gifted teaching preacher of God’s Word. He was an encourager. He was a LEADER, and as such, he was the primary person to research, investigate, lay the foundation for, and administer the founding of Reformed Theological Seminary.
Now, what is your story, Mr. or Mrs. or Miss alumnus?
How did FCA influence and prepare you for life?
Will you please share it with us, either in FCA Today or on FCA ALUMNI FACEBOOK? v

Dr. “Rudy” Campbell Care Center
e renovation of the Craig Building was completed in 2023 in memory of Dr. Rudolph Campbell, a dentist and faithful friend from Memphis, TN. A generous gift from his estate was given to provide updated space for counseling and discipleship.
Dr. Campbell expressed generosity during his lifetime by supporting the ministry of French Camp Academy and its young people through his benevolences and goodwill.
Volunteer labor from the SOWER RV Ministry and Volunteer Mobile Missionaries, along with the FCA Maintenance Department, brought the project to life providing useful space equipped with essential tools needed for FCA’s counseling ministry.
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 ESV

On February 29 an Open House was organized to show off the renovation of the Craig Building naming the counseling program after Dr. Rudy Campbell. Staff and others came out to see the improvements and changes to the building. Many thanks to Steve and Laura Veesart who represented Dr. Campbell’s estate during the Open House.

For any occasion, a loaf of French Camp bread, sliced and toasted, spread
butter and jam is a gift that will be savored. Your
and family and friends get to share the joy
