DIY Furnace Maintenance

Q:

Can I do some furnace maintenance myself? I don’t want to pay for a contractor to come every year just to tell me the furnace is fine. — Clive T., Minneapolis While it’s important to have a heating professional check your system at the start of fall or winter, you can handle some maintenance tasks in between that will keep your system in good shape and reduce the number of more expensive repairs you may need later. First, make sure the air filter is changed monthly during heating season. To improve air intake further, vacuum away dust from the outer cabinet door. Vacuum the air registers in the house to remove dust and make sure nothing is blocking them, like furniture or dropped items. Within the unit, clean the

A:

blower or fan inside by turning off the heating system completely. Access the fan compartment and clean either the blower or fan blades (depending on your system) with a bottle brush. Using a vacuum with a hose attachment makes picking up the dust bunnies easier. Beyond the heating unit, visually inspect the air ducts and make sure they’re in good shape, not damaged or loose. If a duct is loose where two of them meet, reattach snugly using sheet metal screws. Seal the seam with aluminized tape, pressing out air bubbles, so that air flows smoothly through the duct without leaking. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. Slag Glass

Q:

I have a jug and sugar set in caramel slag made by the Imperial Glass Company of Ohio. Does it have any value? I know I didn’t pay much for the two pieces. — Aileen, Harrisville, Mich. Slag glass was introduced by the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company in about 1900. It later was used by other companies, including Imperial Glass. Originally darker in color, it was first called chocolate glass, but a lighter shade called “Boston Coffee” became popular with consumers. Since you did not enclose pictures of the pieces you have, I can’t venture a guess as to values. Typical prices for slag glass I’ve seen in shops include: a small bowl, $35; a covered compote, $75; and a set of salt and peppers, $35. *** I purchased a cigar box full of older marbles at a yard sale earlier this year. I am curious if they are worth more than I paid — about six dollars? — Mark, Sun City West, Ariz. Bill Blair, owner of Blair Collectibles, buys, sells and appraises marbles. He is especially interested in machine marbles made after about 1930 and handmade ones prior to 1915. His addresses are P.O. Box 655, Pine Hill, NY 12465; and blaircol@aol. com. Blair points out that

values have gone down in recent years. *** I have a painting I acquired in New York 25 years ago. I was told it was worth $1,000 at the time. Can you help? — Jimmy, Palm Coast, Fla. There are certain times in life when professional help is required. For example, dental work, to solve a legal problem or determine the value of artwork. To document and appraise your painting, you should hire the services of a certified art appraiser. *** I have a camera, a Hawk-Eye Model A, made by Kodak. The patent dates are 1914 and 1916. It requires 120 film. It is in excellent shape. — Tweedie, Belen, N.M. The Hawk-Eye box cameras made by Kodak were extremely popular during the early decades of the past century. Because of that, they are also quite plentiful. Most cameras of this type generally sell in the $25-$45 range. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. HOLLYWOOD — Guess Jennifer Aniston loved being a horrible boss so much, she’s making “Horrible Bosses 2.” Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx are back, but Colin Farrell and Donald Sutherland will not return. Two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine will fill the void as bosses. Also in the works for Jenn is “She’s Funny That Way” (also known as “Squirrels to the Nuts”) with Owen Wilson, Tatum O’Neal, Cybill Shepard and Richard Lewis. It’s directed by “The Last Picture Show” director Peter Bogdanovich, who wrote the screenplay with his exwife, Louise Stratton, in 2005. Tom Cruise’s next film, “Edge of Tomorrow,” which pits him against aliens, will be out in June. He’s currently preparing “Go Like Hell,” about automotive legend Carroll Shelby. It will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who guided Cruise through “Oblivion,” which cost $120 million and grossed $286 million. Matt Damon postponed his directorial debut to be directed by Christopher Nolan (who gave us the “Batman” trilogy) in “Interstellar,” with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chas-

tain, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, Topher Grace and Casey Affleck. The story involves wormholes, time travel and alternate dimensions. Matt’s last film, “Elysium,” also sci-fi, cost $115 million and grossed $281 million.

Jennifer Anniston Damon will next appear onscreen in George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s “The Monuments Men,” coming Feb. 7. “Entourage” fans rejoice! Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Adrien Grenier, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven are set for the movie version of “Entourage,” shooting in January. Jeremy Piven asked for and got more money than the others, and when they found out, they refused to sign until they got bigger paychecks.

*** Universal Studios didn’t learn anything from the reboot of “Ironside,” which was canceled after four episodes. It is still rebooting several vintage series. First, big-screen versions of “The Rockford Files” (1974-80), starring Vince Vaughn (who’s also producing), and the Robert Wagner series “It Takes a Thief” (196870). “White Collar,” on USA, is a rip-off of “Thief,” with Matt Bomer playing a thief who works for the FBI instead of the CIA, as Wagner’s character did. The 1980s series “Remington Steele” gets cut from an hour dramedy to a half-hour comedy, without Pierce Brosnan or Stephanie Zimbalist; and NBC has guaranteed a full season of the new “Murder She Wrote,” which ran for 12 years on CBS with Angela Lansbury (1984-96). Lansbury was nominated all 12 years for an Emmy but never won. She’s getting an honorary Oscar on Nov. 16. Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer plays a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth who self-publishes her first novel. You can bet she won’t live in Cabot Cove or be named Jessica Fletcher. Self-publishing her own murder mysteries ... what a novel idea!

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL After his brush with death, Bill told Katie that he wanted to come home to her and Will. Brooke mourned her breakup with Bill but was also happy for her sister. Hope and Liam came to an understanding about where they stood in each other’s lives. Brooke reflected back on her life and how she had set a poor example for her children. Meanwhile, Hope appeared to be following in her mother’s footsteps as she flirted with Wyatt. Liam and Wyatt called a temporary truce after almost losing their father. Hope and Caroline acknowledged how their friendship has grown. Liam accused Hope of punishing him for being so indecisive about her and Steffy over the years. Wait to See: Brooke has a meltdown. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Maggie blasted Victor for using Marlena. Rory attempted to lure JJ into using drugs. Eric confronted Kristen with what he remembered. Later, Eric and Brady got into a physical altercation. Maggie turned to Daniel

Sonny accidentally stumbled upon Gabi’s secret. Sami had a fit when she found an incriminating text message on EJ’s phone. Nicole didn’t accept Eric’s apology without speaking her mind first. Wait to See: Shane and Kimberly visit their daughter in Salem.

Don Diamont stars as “Bill” on “The Bold and The Beautiful” GENERAL HOSPITAL Robin was eager to process Luke’s blood so that she could manufacture the cure for Jerry. Robin was hit hard when she arrived at the lab, remembering the last time she was there with Patrick. In court, Maxie told Diane to go after Lulu as ruthlessly as Lulu was

attacking her. Patrick and Sabrina broke the news to Emma that they were getting married next week. Felix soon arrived with a slew of wedding dresses for Sabrina to try on. Luke and Tracy marveled over baby Connie while waiting for the doctor. Carlos kept pressuring Sabrina for a reconciliation. Robert and Anna enacted a plan to escape from Jerry. Wait to See: Franco threatens to harm Heather. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Jack hired Hilary to help him get even with Victor. Nikki invited Dylan to a charity event for Veterans Day. Abby feared that Tyler was involved with his ex again. Kevin grew frustrated with how slow the investigation into Delia’s death was going. Fen told Abby that he didn’t remember what happened the night that Carmine died. Billy found an online support group for people who have lost a child. Devon refused to be a spy for Jack while working at Newman Enterprises. Nick felt uncomfortable when Dylan showed up to the Veterans Day ceremony with Avery. Michael tried to negotiate a reduced sentence for Fen. Paul found a napkin with Lauren’s DNA on it at the scene of Carmine’s murder. Wait to See: Nikki prepares to tell her secret to her family. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

VENISON DONATION DROP OFF

—12—

By Samantha Weaver • It was noted wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Every saint has a past and every sinner a future.” • It seems that having blond hair was popular in ancient Rome, too. Those not naturally blessed with golden hair, though, had to go through a bit of an ordeal to change their natural color. The treatment of choice was pigeon droppings. Messy, perhaps, but effective. • Those who study such things say that dung beetles use the Milky Way as a navigational aid. • In June 2009, the town of Cave Creek, Ariz., was faced with an electoral tie in the race for a city council seat: Each candidate received exactly 660 votes. According to the state constitution, such ties can be broken by a game of chance. After some discussion, the candidates agreed that they would each pull a card at random out of a deck, and

the one with the highest card would be declared the winner of the election. Thomas McGuire drew the six of hearts, then waited while his opponent, Adam Trenk, took his turn. Trenk pulled the king of hearts, securing his city council victory. • You may be surprised to learn that clams can live to be 200 years old. • If you’re of a morbid inclination and have some time to kill in Chicago, head to that city’s Graceland Cemetery. Find the monument known as “Eternal Silence” — a tall figure in robes — and look into the statue’s eyes. It’s said that if you do that, you’ll have a vision of your own death. *** Thought for the Day: “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” — E.B. White © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

WHITE HOUSE TRIVIA • George Washington is the only president never to have slept in the White House. • Construction began in 1792, and the home first was occupied by John Adams and his wife, Abigail, in 1800. On Aug. 24, 1814, during the War of 1812, British troops burned the White House in retaliation for an earlier burning of Canadian government buildings in York, Ontario, by the United States. James Monroe moved into the rebuilt White House in 1817. • Running water was piped into the residence in 1833, a central heating system was installed in 1837, and electricity lit up the home beginning in 1891. • Today, the home’s square footage is about 55,000. It features six levels, eight staircases, three elevators, 28 fireplaces and 132 rooms, including 35 bathrooms. • It takes 570 gallons of white paint to cover the exterior. • Seventeen White House weddings have been documented. The first, in 1812, was for the sister of first lady Dolley Madison. The most recent, in 1994, was for the brother of first lady Hillary Clinton. • Grover Cleveland became the only president married in the White House when he wed Frances Folsom in the Blue Room in 1886.

• The property features a tennis court, a bowling alley, a movie theater, a beauty salon, a physician’s office, a florist’s shop, a swimming pool and a golf putting green. Dwight Eisenhower had the first putting green installed. Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, were avid bowlers. A jogging track was added around the driveway of the South grounds during Bill Clinton’s first term.

THE ODDS ARE 30-1

• The White House was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960.

• The Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington, obtained in 1800, is the mansion’s oldest furnishing.

Assume you’re declarer in four spades, playing rubber bridge. If you make your contract, you score 820 points; if you go down one, you lose 100 points. It is therefore clear that if you are presented with an opportunity to score an overtrick, you should not grasp that opportunity if it might jeopardize the contract. It would be downright foolish to run the risk of suffering a 920-point loss for the sake of gaining an extra 30 points. Now let’s apply this prin-

ciple to today’s hand. You win West’s heart lead with dummy’s ace and play a low trump to the ace, on which West produces the jack. If you continue with the king of trumps, hoping West started with the Q-J doubleton — in which case you’d finish with 11 tricks — you wind up down one, losing two trump tricks and two diamonds. But that would be the wrong way to proceed. Once West’s jack appears, it is far better to play safe by leading a low spade toward dummy’s ten at trick three. This provides you with 100 percent protection against the possibility of losing more than one trump trick. In the actual deal, East wins the ten with the queen, but his 9-7 of trumps later succumb to your K-8-4 when you lead a trump from dummy. It is true that the recommended play gives up all chance of scoring an overtrick (if West has the Q-J alone), but this is one of those luxuries you can easily afford to do without. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Like people, animals’ bodies become accustomed to the climate they live in. It’s usually recommended that a dog meant to live outside should be kept outside much of the time. This doesn’t mean, though, that your dog must stay out constantly during periods of extreme cold or very bad weather. Please do bring your dog in when it’s not fit outside for man nor beast! 14 DFW / 12 SC

DEAR JOHN: You said it! There are actually about 3,000 military working dogs in all branches of service, and they’ve played a crucial role in protecting U.S. forces since at least World War I. They’ve served as trackers, sentries, scouts and bomb sniffers, and assisted military police in their duties. So, how can you recognize, honor or even help military working dogs today? Here are a few ideas. —Learn about heroic military working dogs and

FOOTBALL ON THANKSGIVING

The National Football League’s Thanksgiving Classic is a series of games played during the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. It has been a regular occurrence since the league’s inception in 1920. Currently, three NFL games are played every Thanksgiving. The first two are hosted by the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, with one team from each conference playing either team on a rotating basis; a third game, with no fixed opponents, has been played annually since 2006.
