Classic Country Music Film Presented by Opera House FREDONIA – Country music fans are in for a treat as the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center presents a remastered version of the classic country music documentary Heartworn Highways,

streaming through Mar. 4 in the Opera House Screening Room. In the mid-1970s, filmmaker James Szalapski documented the then-nascent country music movement that would become known

as “outlaw country.” Inspired, in part, by newlylong-haired Willie Nelson’s embrace of hippie attitudes and audiences, a younger generation of artists including Townes Van Zandt, David Alan Coe, Steve

Earle and Guy Clark popularized and developed the outlaw sound. It borrowed from rock, folk and bluegrass, with an edge that was missing from mainstream

Jamestown native to receive Fredonia’s Lanford Presidential Prize FREDONIA – Bradley J. Brown, a State University of New York at Fredonia senior majoring in Biochemistry who will matriculate to SUNY Upstate Medical University this fall, has been selected to receive the 2021 Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment of the Fredonia College Foundation. The award, which recognizes a member of the graduating class who has exhibited balanced achievement and exemplifies Fredonia ideals, was generously created and endowed by the late President Emeritus Oscar E. Lanford and Mrs. Lanford. Brown was one of 11 nominees. Since enrolling at Fredonia in 2017, Brown, the son of Douglas and Alda Brown, has achieved a 3.99 GPA. He has a minor in Psychology. A graduate of Jamestown High School, Brown has taken an active role in campus programs and activities related to his studies. He is a two-time participant in Honduras: Health Care in Central America, a J-Term study abroad program that enables students to serve in medical brigades in the Central America country. Brown became a student leader in his second year in the program. Brown also

launched a new student club, Fredonia for Friends of Honduran Children, which supports children living in an orphanage where Fredonia students stay on their visits. Additionally, Brown is a founding member and treasurer of the campus chapter of Partners in Health Engage, an organization that advocates health care equity in 11 countries. He organized and executed fundraisers that generated over $1,500. Brown has also Photo Submitted served as a volunteer at the Jericho Road Community Lanford Presidential Prize recipient Bradley J. They have since retired, sold the business, and travel around the world and all over North America in their motorhome, stopping at Rotary clubs and visiting friends they have met through Rotary.” During her presentation, Chard explained how The Rotary Foundation (TRF) began, its causes, the importance of supporting its good work, various avenues for charitable giving and forms of donor recognition. She said, “TRF started in 1917 with an initial donation of $26.50. It is a not-for-profit organization and operates separately from Rotary International (RI).” She continued, “Charity Navigator lists TRF as number five in its top ten list of the best charities in the world with a score of 99.40. It maintains good stewardship of funds contributed by both Rotarians and non-Rotarians in support of its many causes.” TRF and others listed in the top ten were ranked very high “because of their exceptional financial management, no easy feat

Fredonia presents Poummit Secretarial Award to Amy Schmitt promoting attendance. Schmitt connects with students, attends these events and has become somewhat of a surrogate mom to many students. signing out their lockers, Schmitt developed an Excel spreadsheet that she shared with the department. A huge undertaking, considering there are hundreds of lockers, it enabled students to sign out their locker. And while staff worked from home during the pandemic, Schmitt made a point to have daily contact with many of them. When the School of Music class schedule had to be revised due to pandemic guidelines, Schmitt printed schedules for each room in Mason Hall, and posted them to the

door of each room to help guide students and faculty. It was described as a large and very helpful undertaking. The Fredonia College Foundation presented a $250 cash award and framed Poummit Secretarial Award certificate to Schmitt. The award was established through the Fredonia College Foundation to honor secretarial staff members for an outstanding service attitude, creativity, resourcefulness, demonstrated team effort and personal integrity and leadership.

SUNY Fredonia to host county-operated vaccination site FREDONIA - The State University of New York at Fredonia has entered into an agreement with the Chautauqua County Department of Health to establish a mass vaccination site to serve eligible residents in the region. The vaccination site will be set up in the Ice Arena complex in Steele Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus for use by the health department when COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. The site will be under the control of the Chautauqua County Health Department, which will schedule appointments and administer the vaccine. As a host institution, SUNY Fredonia will not handle details related to appointment scheduling or administration of immunizations. SUNY Fredonia is solely serving as the host site and will provide support as needed to ensure that the site is accessible and available. “SUNY Fredonia is committed to being good partners with our surrounding community,” said Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. “As I have indicated, public institutions of higher education must be

of, and for, the communities in which they operate to remain highly relevant. This agreement is a manifestation of the seriousness we bring to our role in this community. In these unprecedented times, collaboration is key to moving us beyond this terrible pandemic.” “As vaccine supply increases, sites like the SUNY Fredonia campus with large, open venues and ample parking will be necessary to accommodate the number of people we anticipate needing to vaccinate,” said Chautauqua County Public Health Director Christine Schuyler. “We are grateful for the partnership and support of SUNY Fredonia in accomplishing this monumental task.” Information regarding vaccination clinics is shared on the Chautauqua County Health Department webpage at https://chqgov.com/public-health/ covid-19-vaccine-information SUNY Fredonia faculty, staff and students should expect to be vaccinated according to the prioritization established by the New York State Department of Health.

Country continued from front Nashville country. Now newly-restored, this documentary includes rarely-captured performances of the aforementioned musicians as they perfected this then-new style and helped change the course of country music history. The hard living – and hard partying – lifestyles of outlaw country’s figureheads are played out on screen as viewers visit Van Zandt’s Austin trailer, see Coe play in Tennessee State Prison, join the gang in Nashville’s notorious Wig Wam Tavern and witness a liquor-fueled Christmas at Clark’s house. No wonder the film’s original tagline read: “The best music and the best whiskey come from the same part of the country.” The Opera House Screening Room provides movies and other digital programming to its patrons in the wake of the continued COVID restrictions which prevent the theater from opening. The cost of streaming the films ranges from $4.99 to $12 per household, depending on the film. The revenue generated is shared by the Opera House and the film studios. “Since we are unable to reopen yet, this is one way of providing our patrons with access to programming, and of generating income for the Opera House to help ensure its survival,” says Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis. Every two weeks, a new batch of films is offered; each batch is launched on Friday. The current round of films also includes The Fan Connection, filmed in Buffalo about Buffalo Sabres fans; The Food Club, in which three lifelong friends travel to Italy for more than just the food; and M.C. Escher: Journey to Infinity, the story of the world famous Dutch graphic artist told through his own words and images. The Opera House Screening Room is found on the Opera House web site at www.fredopera.org. Links for each film take the patron to third-party studio sites for ticket purchase. Tickets are per household. Patrons are able to view the films on nearly any mobile device, smart TV, laptop or computer. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House is a member-supported not-for-profit organization located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. Currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the theatre is offering a variety of digital program offerings to continue its mission of “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … and providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.”

Rotary considering the scope and size of their operations. Charitable givers should feel confident that these national institutions put their donations to good use. [Source: Charity Navigator.] TRF lists its mission statement as “to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.” Rotary International’s causes include the following: promoting peace; fighting disease; providing clean water; saving mothers and children; supporting education; growing local economies; and protecting the environment. Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self.” Numerous programs are TRF funded. These include youth programs, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Peace Fellowships, Rotary Community Corps, grants, youth exchanges, New Generations Service Exchange, scholarships, and Friendship Exchange. It also funds grants. Chard noted that the two types of TRF grants are global and district ones. District grants are used to fund a variety of district and club service projects and activities, including humanitarian projects, scholarships, youth programs and vocational training teams. She applauded the Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville for seeking and successfully being annually awarded Rotary District 7090 Grants for some of its local and international projects. Three of the last seven District Grants which the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club received were used for the following purposes: purchased two sets of three Breast Self-Examination models and 1,000 BSE shower cards for use by AHN / Westfield Memorial Hospital staff to use with some of its patients in support of early breast cancer detection; acquired a solar recharging system for Project Peanut Butter in Sierra Leone to fund nutritional and medical support of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition; and provided We Can Get Along books to all kindergarten students in

global End Polio Now campaign and polio immunization programs have helped to drastically reduce the number of live polio cases to 141. She said, “Rotary’s work of getting the polio vaccine to places where it is still needed came to a halt during the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan is to start in Sept., 2021 with again giving polio vaccines to children.” According to TRF, Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic today. A child can be protected from the crippling disease of polio with as little as 60 cents. For every US$1 Rotary gives to polio eradication, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has committed US$2. Chard reviewed various methods for making donations to TRF and the importance of individual, club and district giving. All contributions are tax-deductible. Some secure ways to give to Rotary include memorials or tributes, Rotary Direct recurring giving, one-time donations, planned giving, supporting a Rotary global grant, and a gift to the Rotary endowment. Other methods are structured legacy gifts, including a bequest to TRF in an estate plan, named giving to honor a friend or family member in perpetuity; real estate donation; through various securities; using an IRA rollover; corporate matching gift; check, draft or wire payments; and Facebook fundraising. Giving through any of these means enables TRF to continue its important local and global endeavors. The Rotary Club of Westfield-Mayville extends its gratitude to Sandi Chard for her informative program on The Rotary Foundation, and for helping to support TRF, its programs and its many valuable causes throughout local communities and the world. More information about TRF and Rotary International may be found online at www.rotary.org. five local school districts to promote civility, empathy and literacy. Two additional district grants awarded to this Rotary club were used for these purposes: to fund the installation of two water wells in rural villages near Niamey, Niger in Africa for clean water, thereby avoiding the spread of polio and other diseases, and giving young females the opportunity to attend school, instead of hauling water long distances; and to fund educational programs for 50 adolescent females in grades 4-12 in local communities and in partnership with the Westfield YWCA to promote positive social, emotional and physical health development. A sixth district grant was used by the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club to provide instructional, literacy materials for elementary age students in 18 rural villages near Niamey, Niger. A seventh grant enabled the Westfield-Mayville Rotary club to purchase equipment (tables and seating) for the Chautauqua Safety Village in Ashville, NY, where this club had previously funded and helped to build an outdoor pavilion for large group instruction. Also, the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club’s 2021-2022 District Grant to provide first aid and eldercare awareness training through the Westfield YWCA has been conditionally approved. “Cluster funds is my exciting thing,” Chard said. “I don’t see that much in your club’s area. Sixteen Rotary clubs in the St. Catharines (Ontario, Canada) area joined together and each contributed to a pool of funds that was used to purchase a PPE mask cleaning machine for one of our hospitals.” Chard said, “The thing I like most is all of the humanitarian projects that happen from TRF District Designated Funds. Some of these are backpack projects, bike lanes, mentor programs, school drop-in centers, laptops to seniors, bread fruit trees and various water and sanitation (WASH) projects.” During her program, Chard noted that Rotary began its polio eradication efforts in 1979 and officially started its campaign in the early 1980s.
