Chautauqua County Launches COVID-19 Heroes Recognition Program MAYVILLE, NY– Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel and the COVID-19 Response Team recently launched COVID-19 Heroes, a recognition program to highlight the outstanding work of people working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 fight in Chautauqua County. “Early in the pandemic, we recognized many local businesses who were stepping up to help our community, including Jamestown Plastics that invented the True Hero shield, breweries that made hand sanitizer, and Pace’s Pizza that implemented a program to donate pizza to essential workers,” said County Executive PJ Wendel. “As we close in on the one-year mark of COVID-19, we want to recognize the frontline workers who have been going above and beyond, despite the difficult and often stressful circumstances of doing their

job during a pandemic.” Residents may submit an individual for recognition through a form on the county website. Examples of COVID-19 Heroes may include first responders including EMTs and law enforcement, nurses or units from a hospital or nursing home, or any other essential worker involved in the fight against COVID-19. Heroes will be recognized in a weekly video and sent a note of thanks from the County Executive on behalf of all Chautauqua County residents. To nominate an individual to be recognized, visit the COVID-19 informational page on the county website at chqgov.com, or the form directly at https://chqgov. com/form/covid-heroes .For more information contact the County Executive’s office at 716-753-4211.

Daily steps to keep your heart health (METRO)– Heart disease is a formidable foe. According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease accounts for nearly 25 percent of all deaths in the United States each year. Issues relating to the heart affect both men and women, and an estimated 15 million adults in the U.S. have coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease. And heart disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Heart Research Institute says that every seven minutes in Canada someone dies from heart disease or stroke. Such statistics are disconcerting, but they can serve as a wake-up call that compels people to prioritize heart health. Fortunately, heart disease is often preventable and people can employ various strategies to reduce their risk. • Stop smoking right now. One of the best things to do to protect the heart is to stop

smoking. The Heart Foundation indicates that smoking reduces oxygen in the blood and damages blood vessel walls. It also contributes to atherosclerosis, or a narrowing and clogging of the arteries. • Eat healthy fats. When eating, choose polyunsaturated and unsaturated fats and avoid trans fats as much as possible. Trans fats increase one’s risk of developing heart disease by clogging arteries and raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. Read food labels before buying anything at the store. • Keep your mouth clean. Studies show that bacteria in the mouth involved in the development of gum disease can travel to the bloodstream and cause an elevation in C-reactive protein, a marker for blood vessel inflammation. Brush and floss twice daily, and be sure to schedule routine dental cleanings. • Get adequate shut-eye.

Ensuring adequate sleep can improve heart health. One study found that young and middle-age adults who regularly slept seven hours a night had less calcium in their arteries (a sign of early heart disease) compared to those who slept five hours or less or those who slept nine hours or more. • Adopt healthy eating habits. Changes to diet, including eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, can help you lose and maintain a healthy weight, improve cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure — leading to a healthier heart. • Embrace physical activity. Regular moderate exercise is great for the heart. It can occur at the gym, playing with the kids or even taking the stairs at work. A healthy heart begins with daily habits that promote long-term heart health.

Funding is provided by The Lenna Foundation, the Ralph C. Sheldon Foundation, and the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, who continued their generous support of the Alliance’s consolidated local funding process. The process, available exclusively to Alliance Members, works to identify, prioritize, and fund projects using a structured decision-making framework that balances a variety of management techniques, stakeholder priorities, and lake uses. Since its inception in 2018, the process has grown to deliver increased funding for Member-led projects and increased participation by both Members and local foundation partners. The 2021 work plan will include a slate of projects and programs led by Alliance Member organizations aimed at improving the health and usability of Chautauqua Lake. It represents a balanced approach with a mixture of lake management projects, watershed projects, and data collection and research to serve the

lake and its users in both the short-term and longterm. The work plan continues to promote our Unity of Effort strategy that employs Member core competencies to avoid duplication in lake maintenance through collaboration to deliver a more effective and responsive maintenance capacity for the entire lake. It maintains flexibility for adaptive lake maintenance as 2021 conditions emerge by utilizing a blend of mechanical and chemical (pending NYSDEC permits) aquatic plant management and near-shore clean-up techniques. Watershed projects and invasive species early detection teams will guard against storm water flooding, sediment and nutrient loading, and new invasive threats. Community education programs will engage and empower the public to protect Chautauqua Lake. A strategic expansion of data collection and research ca-

pacity will support better harmful algal bloom (HAB) understanding and scenario modeling for decision making moving forward. “I wish to recognize the generosity and community leadership of our foundation partners, the hard work of our staff and Board, and the dedication of our Members to a healthy Chautauqua Lake,” said Alliance Executive Director Randall Perry. Alliance Board Chairman Pierre Chagnon added, “We are extremely grateful for the financial support from the local foundations, and heartened by their continued support of our efforts to protect and enhance the health and usability of Chautauqua Lake.” For more information about this press release or the Alliance, please contact Alliance Executive Director Randall Perry at rperry@ chautauquaalliance.org.

Dunkirk Soccer Stars Recognized as All WNY Scholar Athletes

DUNKIRK – Two Dunkirk High School soccer players are being recognized for their work on the field and in the classroom. Senior Mia Piede was one of 100 WNY student athletes to be named an All Western New York Scholar Athlete for Fall 2020. Her teammate and fellow senior, Rachel Glowniak, received honorable mention as a scholar athlete. “I am so proud that two of my varsity players were recognized for their amazing accomplishments both on and off the field,” said Dunkirk Varsity Soccer Head Coach Chris Piede. “Both girls are incredibly deserving of this award and it’s good to see their hardwork and dedication pay off.” To be nominated, students must have an average of 90 or above for the previous six semesters and have been a starter or significant player in their sport. The scholar-athlete team is open

to all seniors from Western New York schools. Mia Piede is currently top of her class at Dunkirk High School. She has been playing soccer for 12 years and has played on the Varsity Soccer team for four years. Mia was a two-time captain and two-time second team All-County All Star. “It’s a big honor to be named an All WNY Scholar Athlete,” said Mia Piede. “It feels really good to receive that award and getting to share that moment with my dad, who is also my coach, was really special.” Rachel Glowniak is ranked among the top 10 of her class at Dunkirk High School and is an integral part of the soccer team. She has played on the Dunkirk Varsity Soccer team for three years. “It’s great to be recognized and honored,” said Glowniak. “I love soccer and this was a great way to end to my senior season.” Both Mia and Rachel are

coached by Dunkirk Varsity Soccer Head Coach Chris Piede. For more information about All WNY Scholar Athletes or Mia and Ra-

chel’s recognition, please contact Dunkirk Varsity Soccer Coach Chris Piede at cpiede@gmail.com.

Office for Aging Services Director Urges Seniors Seeking COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments to Please be Patient

MAYVILLE, NY–Although adults aged 65 and up are a part of the 7.1 million residents in New York State who are eligible for the COVID-19 Vaccine, many of these folks need assistance to navigate the vaccination scheduling system. “Office for Aging Services (OFAS) is already working to help Chautauqua County seniors make their vaccination appointments but we are urging people to please be patient,” said Dr Mary Ann Spanos, Director of the Chautauqua County Offices for Aging Services. “There are close to 27,000 people in Chautauqua County who are over the age of 65 and everyone wants to be vaccinated first.” “Protecting the health of our seniors is critically important, but we ask for patience as it may take months to get everyone vaccinated,” said PJ Wendel, Chautauqua County Executive. “The supply of vaccine is very limited however we are hopeful that more vaccine will become available each week.” One of the biggest frustrations for older adults has been the State’s conflicting messages about vaccine appointments. The New York State Am I Eligible site recently shifted to only scheduling appointments at State run vaccination sites. The closest of these sites is in Buffalo, N.Y. Never fear, Chautauqua County OFAS is stepping up to help our oldest residents receive the COVID-19 vaccination. For people over the age of 65 who do not have computer access or need assistance to make an online vaccination appointment, they can call the NY Connects helpline at (716) 7534582 to be placed on OFAS’ list. Being on the list does not guarantee an appoint-

ment but the department is making appointments as vaccine becomes available. In the last few days, the NY Connects helpline has received messages from over 1,500 people so callers are urged to please be patient as it may take a few days or even a week to return your call. When you leave a message, please speak slowly and clearly, leave your name, telephone number, and that you are calling for vaccine assistance. OFAS staff will call you back and get you on its list as soon as possible. Everyone who leaves a message will be contacted. Please do not call back several times or leave a duplicate message with the health department since all calls about vaccine appointments are being forwarded to the NY Connects helpline. Once on the list, OFAS is sorting oldest to youngest and offering appointments as they become available. When it schedules the oldest person in the house, it will also schedule the spouse or caregiver who is over 65. Unless designated as eligible in Phase 1A or Phase 1B, those under 65 years of age are not eligible yet for vaccine according to the State’s vaccine distribution plan. OFAS is unable to schedule anyone under 65 at this time and is not putting people who are under 65 on the list. If you are 65 and over and want to try to get an appointment on your own, please visit the following websites to check for appointment availability: Chautauqua County Department of Health: https:// chqgov.com/public-health/ covid-19-vaccine-information Rite Aid Pharmacy: https://www.riteaid.com/ Covid-19 Tops Pharmacy: https://www.topsmarkets.com/covid19 Weg-

mans Pharmacy: https:// www.wegmans.com/pharmacy/ Links to these pharmacies and other COVID-19 information, can also be found on the County website at chqgov.com by visiting its COVID-19 Information page. DO NOT CALL these pharmacies or the County Health Department to schedule an appointment as they are unable to give you an appointment over the phone. In addition, in general, these pharmacies are the only places allowed to vaccinate the over 65 population in our county at this time. Many pharmacies are only vaccinating 10 people a day because the vaccine supply is so limited. Also note that CVS and Walgreen pharmacies are contracted to vaccinate people in nursing homes and assisted living residences. Although the information being shared with county government has not been consistent, Chautauqua County OFAS and Health Department are trying to coordinate efforts with all vaccinators. OFAS and the Health Department will continue to reach out to state, regional and corporate pharmacy contacts to improve our communication so we can direct people to the best information. “The bottom line is there is not much vaccine right now so we all need to take a breath and continue to wear our masks, socially distance, and wash our hands or sanitize frequently,” said Christine Schuyler, Public Health Director. For more information call the NY Connects at (716) 716-753-4582 or e-mail us at ccnyc@co.chautauqua. ny.us

Western New York County Health Departments issue joint statement on wrestling MAYVILLE, NY – The leaders of the five county health departments (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara) in Western New York (WNY) are providing the following joint statement related to wrestling programs. This announcement follows updates to the NY Forward Interim Guidance for Sports and Recreation on January 22, 2021. Revisions to the guidance relaxed certain restrictions on higher-risk sports, including wrestling. Wrestling involves participants sparring in very close physical proximity for extended periods of time, which significantly increases the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Similarly, masks, which are a method of COVID-19 risk reduction, are not recommended to be worn during wrestling because of a choking hazard. Further, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report1 (MMWR) published January 26, 2021 summarized a large COVID

outbreak associated with a wrestling tournament in December 2020. Through a case investigation that spanned three counties and included diagnostic testing of contacts, the report noted hundreds of contacts, significant losses of in-person learning days, suspension of all winter indoor and outdoor high school athletics in one county, and one death resulting from multiple exposures during this wrestling tournament. The circumstances outlined in that MMWR brief could easily be replicated at any WNY wrestling tournament. In the interests of limiting risk and protecting the health of athletes, their classmates , households, and coaching and teaching staff within schools, WNY health department leaders strongly recommend that interscholastic, intramural and amateur wrestling teams and leagues cancel or postpone their winter 2021 seasons to a later date, when community transmission of COVID-19 is significantly lower. Western New York County Health Departments issue Joint Statement regarding Travel and Quarantine

Upcoming school breaks raise concerns about travel-based COVID-19 cases MAYVILLE, NY – The leaders of the five Western New York (WNY) county health departments (Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara) are providing the following joint statement related to the upcoming school breaks and the New York State (NYS) Travel Advisory. Our departments share a common goal to keep the students, families and staff associated with schools healthy and safe, and to keep schools open. Reducing the risk of travel-based cases, and reducing the spread of variant COVID-19 strains to and within WNY communities is one part of our collective COVID-19 response. With vacation breaks scheduled in February and April for many schools, our departments are strongly discouraging travel to areas outside of New York State with high rates of COVID-19 transmission, known cases of variant COVID-19 strains, or areas that do not have COVID-19 safety measures in place. All NYS Travel Advisory guidance applies because vaccinated individuals may still be able to infect others following an exposure to the virus. If school staff or families choose to travel, NYS Travel Advisory guidance will apply for travelers who are in a non-contiguous state for more than 24 hours: Quarantine Option: Travelers must quarantine for 10 days following arrival in NYS. OR Quarantine PLUS Test Option: Travelers must obtain a diagnostic COVID-19 test within three days of departure, prior to arrival in NYS. And, the traveler must, upon arrival in NYS, quarantine for three days. And, on day 4 of their quarantine, the traveler must obtain another COVID-19 diagnostic test. If both test results are negative, the traveler may exit quarantine early upon receipt of the second negative

diagnostic test. County health departments have fielded questions from school leaders about whether school staffs who have received one or both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine need to quarantine after out-of-state travel. To date, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has not issued any guidance that removes a quarantine requirement for people who have been vaccinated against COVID-19. All Travel Advisory guidance applies. Vacation breaks in other parts of the country also mean that travelers could arrive for visits into WNY. For those arriving for visits, our departments advise visitors to heed the NYS Travel Advisory and take other public health measures like wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, staying home when sick and avoiding gatherings. For staff and families who choose to travel to areas with high levels of COVID-19 transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has information for travelers to consider before, during and after travel. Households where someone is at increased risk for getting very sick from COVID-19, including adults over 65 and individuals with certain chronic medical conditions, should seriously consider postponing travel. Individuals who do not show COVID-19 symptoms may still be infected and able to spread COVID-19 to others. That includes children, who may have no symptoms or very mild symptoms. As a reminder, New York State Department of Health guidance from November

2020 noted that although teachers, school staff and child care workers are considered essential, the NYS Travel Advisory exemption for essential workers does not apply to teachers, school employees, or child care workers, due to the sensitivity of these congregate settings.Resources:NYS Travel Advisory: https:// coronavirus.health.ny.gov/ covid-19-travel-advisoryNYSDOH Interim Guidance for Quarantine Restrictions on Travelers Arriving in NYS Following Out of State Travel: https://coronavirus. health.ny.gov/system/files/ documents/2020/11/interm_guidance_travel_advisory.pdfCDC Travel Guidance During COVID-19: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/travel-during-covid19. htmlCDC COVID-19, People with Certain Medical Conditions: https://www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/ need-extra-precautions/ people-with-medical-conditions.htmlCDC Information on New Variants of the Virus that causes COVID-19: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/transmission/variant.htmlAllegany County Department of Health: www.alleganyco. com/health-departmentCattaraugus County Department of Health: www. cattco.org/healthChautauqua County Department of Health: www.chqgov.com/ public-health/public-healthErie County Department of Health: www.erie.gov/ healthNiagara County Department of Health: www.niagaracounty.com/ healthStop the spread of COVID-19: Wear a mask; maintain a social distance of 6 feet; wash your hands often.
