There is a place where mist rises from the valley. A place where water ripples softly and the sound of nature echoes through the forested mountains. A place where time slows, and people stop to reconnect. A place that’s stayed true to its history and a place where generations of families have gathered for what may be a week or a month or a lifetime. The place is High Hampton. The Original Southern Mountain Retreat— circa 1830. Built by families for families. Where the sky is bluer, and the stars are brighter, and the water is cooler.
It’s High Hampton. Where life stays true.

High Hampton has been a family retreat for nearly two-hundred years.
First, it was owned by one storied Southern family.
Then, by another important American family.
And, finally by a local family who turned the old estate into an ideal Southern mountain retreat.
Today, High Hampton is owned by a group of Southern families who want to keep the best of the past while planning for the future, so the sights, the sounds and the sheer joy of being here remain true to their centuriesold roots.
And, while the years may tick by and the faces may change – the traditions, the experience and the place that have always been are the threads that connect families and friends time and time again.
High Hampton is a place where generations of families return to make memories year after year.
It is where the Hampton family escaped the summer heat and humidity of the low lands.
It’s where second owner William Halsted took respite from his position as one of the founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital and where he cultivated his beloved dahlias, which are still enjoyed today.
It’s where the McKee family built an Inn in 1922. And, where they curated an un-fussy, rustic and civilized existence ever since.
It’s where rockers line wide porches. And bird sightings are kept in a chart dating back for a half century.
It’s where mules first worked the land and are now fed with apples from the Inn’s kitchen – and used to pull children in wagons.
It’s where the dinnertime dress code reads, “No denim, no ball caps, no cell phones.” And the spirit of a Southern summer and special family occasions can be felt year-round.
It’s where the sky is bluer, the stars are brighter, and the water is cooler.
It’s High Hampton.
Where life stays true.

“Mules symbolize the kind of character and perseverance that [mountain] life requires. A mule is only as good as its owner, they say. And most everyone loved their mule, even when it was aggravating.”
– William Faulkner
