To all our supporters, donors, families, faculty and staff, FAPC, alumni, friends and volunteers, thank you for making this an incredible year. We cannot wait to celebrate many more accomplishments with you!
As I reflect on my 25 years at Fraser Academy, I have so many fond memories. I could not be more proud of what we have achieved, growing from strength to strength.
This past spring, we became the first K-12 school in Canada to be accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy, an important step to becoming Canada’s Centre for Dyslexia. Our day school student population has grown to 270 and, with more than 150 children in our outreach services, demand now exceeds capacity in every program offered.
Our ambition has always been to ensure students with learning differences, like dyslexia, get the education they need, when they need it, so they can demonstrate their intellect and talents. Our Outreach Centre, including teacher training, has been instrumental in raising awareness of dyslexia and providing the urgent support needed to serve the children who cannot attend our day school.
We have seen so many of our students go on to achieve success and prosperity after FA in college, university, the arts
and trades, and the world of work.
Serving this community has been so rewarding and both an honour and a privilege. The partnerships we have between parents, donors, faculty, students and alumni have been pivotal. Fraser Academy has an exceptional and committed team and I confidently hand over the reins of the school to Bryson Norrish, and the larger organization to Neil Johnston. I know our students will continue to flourish and become contributing citizens.
There has never been a more important time to invest in Fraser Academy! We cannot do it without our donors and we are grateful.
From all of us - thank you.
Maureen Steltman Head of School (Retired June 30, 2022)2021-22 started with the City of Vancouver formally blessing our journey of realizing Canada’s first Centre for Dyslexia! The City’s commitment to the dyslexic community was further amplified in the fall. Students proudly attended City Hall following our successful request to the Mayor for October to be proclaimed ‘Dyslexia Awareness Month.’
Our students’ and families’ voices, as well as your “time, talent and treasure” (philanthropy) are helping us gain crucial support from the wider community. They help reinforce FA’s core as a leader in dyslexia.
This year’s Changing Destinies Fund helped us aspire to excellence in math remediation by addressing the struggles often felt by our students beyond language. It’s an approach which isn’t new, affirmed by two alumni: a mechanical engineer doing an eight month co-op work term for Tesla in Silicon Valley and a BCIT graduate who is now an aircraft maintenance engineer.
“The opportunity to create a Centre of Excellence for Dyslexia right here in Vancouver is a massive game-changer. Working together with FA leadership to actualize this vision has been inspirational.”
COUNCILLOR PETE FRY, CITY OF VANCOUVERAs donors, you are also feeding the bigger picture to realize Canada’s Centre for Dyslexia. This is so inspiring while we are at the early stages of this transformative vision.
Every gift makes a difference!
You are making something special happen right here in Vancouver.
With sincere gratitude, Neil Johnston Director of Advancement / CEO as of July 1, 2022
Heather succeeds Neil Johnston in the Advancement leadership role. Heather joins us from Arts Umbrella. As their Senior Director, Development, she led their recent capital campaign for a new home on Granville Island, while also increasing annual revenue.
“I am honoured to have the opportunity to join the Fraser Academy team. The 40-year history of educational excellence and innovation in transforming the lives of young people is truly an inspiration. I look forward to bringing the vision of Canada’s Centre for Dyslexia to life.”
The Changing Destinies Fund supplements our annual budget so that we can create an optimal learning environment by adding resources, creating opportunities and enhancing the current student experience.
Tuition revenue and government grants cover our day-to-day operating needs. Your gift to the Changing Destinies Fund is an investment in the craft of educational excellence and our student’s potential. Key highlights from your philanthropy in 2021-22 include:
• Developed common language and approaches for teaching foundational numeracy skills.
• Incorporated multisensory and “concrete, representational, abstract” (CRA) methods into lesson plans.
• Further developed our procedures to quickly identify each student’s prior gaps in learning, and established learning goals and targets specific to each grade.
• Created resources for fluency, strategy lists for lesson plans, classroom hands-on and manipulative learning, and additional instructor tools.
• Continued investment in staff and faculty in the area of remedial math instruction.
2. Bursaries (financial aid: an annual priority)
Bursaries provided opportunities for 36 children who would not otherwise have been able to attend FA.
3. Professional Development (an annual priority)
Investing in our faculty to develop and heighten their expertise, evoking exceptional outcomes for our scholars.
Refer to our Strategic Path Progress Report for more details (see page 16).
Children and youth with dyslexia deserve the opportunity to thrive in education and excel in life.
Envision a world where:
• each student’s intelligence is honoured
• every educator is trained to reach the 1 in 5 students with dyslexia
• all children have access to early literacy screening and intervention
• society understands and embraces the value of dyslexic thinking
Vancouver has the opportunity to lead this change and realize a world-class education and training centre for generations to come.
When we think dyslexia, we think potential.

I have had the privilege of being involved in the FA community for more than a decade, and in that time I’ve witnessed the amazing potential of our students when our community comes together to ensure they have an education that complements their learning profiles.
Each and every day, our teachers and learning specialists put their hearts into working alongside their students. I am truly impressed by the unparalleled passion and expertise of our faculty. It is their
commitment that allows our students to thrive and showcase their strengths.
In addition, we are grateful to the FA Parent Community who play an integral part in connecting families, and supporting and maintaining an engaged school community.
Collectively, we all support our vision of Changing Destiny by Changing Minds!
To the entire FA community, thank you. It is our partnership that will enable us to change
the trajectory of so many students for years to come.
TPAREN COMMUNITYThe FA Parent Community (FAPC) is a collective where we build community through fostering supportive friendships and sharing personal journeys and experiences.
These strong community connections play a vital role to how we and our children integrate and thrive at school and contribute to the FA community. To cultivate this, our goal is to maximize parent participation in school activities and events, both socially and through volunteering.
Bryson Norrish Assistant Head of School / Head of School as of July 1, 2022FAPC executive members, alongside our Class Parents, other volunteers and families, ensured another successful year. We were pleased to return to in-person socials and family get-togethers in 2022!
To get involved, please contact fapc@fraseracademy.ca.

New families enrich our community! Our goal is to help them quickly settle in and discover the transformative experience of Fraser Academy.
Here’s what one Grade 5 family shared:
Dyslexia is new to our family. Fraser Academy led us to experience multiple “ah ha” moments this year.
Our daughter was falling behind in mainstream
education, even with extra help. As we watched her confidence and academics diminish, we had her tested. The diagnosis: dyslexia. Ah ha #1! The origin of her struggles!
We missed the application deadline and were devastatingly waitlisted. In August, FA called. As parents, we cried; as a student, our daughter cried knowing she would be in an environment “with her people, no longer an outcast.”
Our lives changed forever that day.
Before FA, our daughter could not read. In January, our “ah ha #2” moment: she read me a grade-level book. We joyfully cried seeing her tremendous growth in academics, confidence and maturity. We could not be more proud of her.
In school, I struggled like my daughter. I excelled in creativity and entrepreneurship but my learning needs were not met. This year I witnessed the impact of an optimal learning environment; I have lived vicariously through her. As a parent and adult, in parallel to identifying my daughter’s learning differences, I finally identified mine.
We are eternally thankful for Fraser Academy. We have the opportunity to support FA’s vision: “Changing Destiny by Changing Minds.” It is our honour to donate and volunteer as we can; we hope others will do the same.

Your support directly enhances our students’ experiences through ensuring an optimal learning environment.
An alumni parent and bursary donor shares their story:
My daughter attended FA for Grades 6 through 8, ultimately transferring to another school. Fraser Academy gave her skills and tools which greatly assist her to this day, as she works to obtain her Computer Science degree at UBC.
For more than a decade, I have seen FA’s evolution and consistent dedication to ensuring dyslexic learners are supported in reaching their
potential. My parents paid for my daughter’s education; this was the sole reason she could enroll. When we were considering FA, they stepped up without hesitation.
I am now in a position where I can, annually, support a student who would otherwise not be able to attend due to their family’s financial means. Many families make incredible concessions to give their child access to FA; the lengths at which one will go are truly remarkable.
I am delighted to continue my parents’ generosity by personally supporting another family’s journey. Every
student can accomplish great things if armed with the right environment and personalized attention.
To those who donate, thank you! Coming from a financial aid beneficiary, your philanthropy is priceless.
Our journey may have been rocky, but I am proud to be an alumni parent within this amazing community, paying it forward.
- Anonymous alumni parent and bursary donor
Access through bursaries (financial aid) will always be a key FA philosophy.
A bursary recipient shares their story:
To every donor, thank you. Since 2017, my family has received bursary assistance. Without this, we would not have access to FA’s school program.
A few years ago, as my personal life was drastically evolving, my daughter “A” was fighting her own battle. While having language-based learning differences and ADHD, she was navigating an educational environment built for “neurotypical kids.” Scared
and confused every day, being made fun of and constantly coming home crying, this was becoming her new normal.
As a parent, no amount of personal difficulties or financial restrictions would allow me to let this continue. I reconfigured everything to give her access to clinical testing.
Dyslexic confirmation in hand, I found FA and applied. Upon acceptance, our new reality came to life. “A” could be the girl she needed to be, knowing she would be understood.
Fraser Academy has been there for her every step of the way, good and bad. The school has become a pillar in our lives.
Receiving a bursary has not just opened the doors of compassion, opportunity and possibility to “A,” but to a situation that involved me, as much as her. She is thriving. How can I thank Fraser Academy and its donors? The impact is priceless.
Annually, I support the Changing Destinies Fund. It is my mission to pay it forward so other families can experience the same transformative change that ours has.
Thank you.

The Fraser Academy community does not end at graduation! Celebrating the successes and maintaining connection with our alumni and future graduates is so important.
Our alumni are key role models in our community. Their life stories, diversity of interests and careers give encouragement and provoke thought in our current students, reinforcing that anything is possible.
Each year we invite our alumni to attend events, share their stories and attend post-secondary and career panels for Grade 11 and 12 students. They offer friendship
