Celebrating Frankston City’s heritage Frankston is celebrating its history over the weekend of 3–4 September 2016 which coincides with the 50 year anniversary of Frankston being declared a city (24 August 1966).

The heritage celebration follows last year’s successful History Day with more than 300 people attending the history event.

This year the event will cover Frankston’s history from 1919 to 1966 and will

feature photographic displays, memorabilia and a short film produced for the event.

A number of local identities will also share their stories from the ‘good old days’ and you will have opportunity to ask questions and share memories about Frankston’s past.

The day will provide an opportunity to understand the place where you live, how it has developed over time and meet others in the community.

Thank you to all the residents who completed Council’s recent survey on hard waste collection preferences.

From more than 2,000 responses, 66 per cent prefer the city-wide kerbside collection service continue as per recent years, while 33 per cent prefer the alternative at-call collection service available at any time during the year.

Council is listening to the community and will consider the survey results when making a decision on the future of hard waste collection in our city.

Council will also enforce rules around what type of waste, and how much, will be collected.

I urge residents to take advantage of the new Frankston Regional Recycling and Recovery Centre (FRRRC) open seven days a week in Skye. This really is an affordable centre with Council offering discounted rates for residents and many items are accepted free-ofcharge including TVs and e-waste.

Advocating for our community Council’s role to lobby other levels of government to help fund local

projects is increasingly important. Our advocacy efforts are going well with numerous visits to Frankston by a range of Ministers from both the state and federal levels. It is astonishing to see the level of interest in Frankston at the moment and I am looking forward to helping achieve the best possible outcomes for Frankston City.

Giving kids the best start The recent extension at Delacombe Park Preschool in Frankston South has doubled capacity of this preschool to offer kindergarten programs for local families.

Frankston rail line One of Council’s advocacy priorities is about improving the rail line from Frankston to Baxter and beyond. This is much more than electrifying the current diesel Stony Point line, it is about long-term improvements to the area’s transport network.

This project will improve public transport for residents in Karingal and Langwarrin; significantly improve access to the hospital and university; and reduce parking congestion in Frankston’s city centre.

Ultimately, the long-term benefits of this project can mean opening a third line to the city, as trains that are currently ‘stabled’ on Frankston’s third line can be relocated. The Frankston Station redesign will

A fresh ‘blueprint’ for the city centre Enlivening our city

Council is working closely with the Victorian Government on a ‘place activation’ project designed to help revitalise Frankston’s city centre.

Parking opportunities

A Parking Management Action Plan is being developed to support city centre parking for the short, medium and long term.

Level crossings Council has commenced work on a ‘blueprint’ to help plan future development in the city centre and ensure Council has a strong position when overseeing and managing business activities and investment opportunities.

This includes coordinating up to 50 projects designed to develop Frankston’s city centre.

Some of these include:

Chisholm Institute

A $70.5 million redevelopment of Chisholm’s Frankston campus will improve student facilities along with local education opportunities.

Courses will continue during the works which start in July 2016 with demolition, followed by construction in early 2017.

Council meets regularly with the Level Crossing Removal Authority to discuss developments along the Frankston line.

Council’s advocacy delivers for the Frankston community Frankston City Council’s strong proactive advocacy has proved instrumental in delivering results to further support the Frankston municipality.

The Mayor, Cr James Dooley, said Council’s representations to state and federal counterparts had been “paying off”, with a string of recent announcements set to provide vital infrastructure and services across the municipality.

“Sport and recreation has been the big winner in Frankston recently, with a number of funding commitments from both main candidates in the federal election,” said the Mayor.

Key advocacy achievements to date include: • Securing funding commitments towards vital redevelopment works for the Frankston Basketball Stadium

• $1.05m from the Victorian Government towards the Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve • VicRoads and Melbourne Water approvals to allow Ball Horticulture to construct its new national headquarters on Hall Road in Skye. This creates 100 new local jobs and delivers a boost to the local economy • Working with Mornington Peninsula Shire and Members of State Parliament to deliver vital road network upgrades for the expansion of Ingham Enterprises Somerville Factory • Frankston Station Precinct Redevelopment worth $63 million, as a result of strong advocacy during the 2014 State election • Chisholm Institute is set to be transformed, making Frankston City a hub for education, training and employment

The Victorian Government has committed $63 million to redevelop the Frankston Station precinct including Young Street. This will transform the heart of Frankston to provide a safe, modern and thriving place of business and activity.

Improving transport access Council has recently upgraded the Beach Street taxi rank to improve safety and access for people with a disability.

Thanks to a $64,000 grant from the Taxi Commission, works have now made the rank accessible for people in wheelchairs or with visual impairments including path upgrades, a new crossover with tactile pavers and appropriate bench seating.

New CCTV cameras with footage being relayed to Frankston Police Station have also been installed to enhance safety, along with new street furniture, signage and line marking.

Thanks also to feedback from some local senior residents about the best location for bench seating to improve the area for all users.

New artwork now on display in Frankston’s city centre features creations by local primary and secondary schools as part of a Council Responsible Street Art Program.

This program has given students the opportunity to express themselves whilst learning valuable lessons about the negative impacts of illegal graffiti compared with street art.

Illegal graffiti is a significant cost to the Frankston community, with graffiti removal costing ratepayers around $350,000 every year.

Thank you to the Victorian Government’s Department of Justice and Regulation for providing Council with a $25,000 grant to support this project.

Carrum Downs Library improvements Carrum Downs Library attracts more than 100,000 visits a year and has just had its first refurbishment since opening in July 2004.

The entry and service desk is much more welcoming and now features new items with the latest books, films and music plus a self-service kiosk. Other enhancements include new furniture, public computers and a change to the collection arrangement to better suit library users.

As well as an extensive collection of books, DVDs, CDs, newspapers and magazines, Carrum Downs Library also offers activities including Storytime, Lego Club and Homework help.

Council Customer Services are also available at this site including payments, permit processing and general enquiries.

Baxter Park pavilion upgrades

Council is working towards expanding the basketball stadium in Seaford to cater for the increasing popularity in the sport. The project planning permit was successfully attained in May 2016 and design development is well underway for stage one. Construction is expected to commence early 2017.

Olivers Hill boat ramp and jetty Council has started work to improve the boat ramp and jetty facilities at Olivers Hill in Frankston South. Access to the site will be closed

The upgrade to the change rooms and kitchen at oval six are due for completion by the end of July 2016. This work follows on from the recent completion of the multi-purpose pavilion and oval one change rooms at Baxter Park.

Council’s strong voice delivers for Carrum Downs sports and recreation Council has completed a number of improvements to the Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve on Wedge Road and more is yet to come thanks to successful advocacy for state sports funding.

New pavilion Council is building a new community sporting pavilion and car park at the Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve, with a total project cost estimated as $3.8 million.

The project and costs will be spread over two financial years. Council’s 2016–2017 budget includes $1.3 million to complete the project design and start construction. This is made possible thanks to a $1.05 million contribution from the Victorian Government.

The remaining amount will be allocated under next year’s budget and includes the funds raised from recent sales of adjoining land.

“I would like to thank the Member for Carrum, Sonya Kilkenny and the Minister for Sport, John Eren, for their consideration and contribution to this fantastic local project, after many years of extensive advocacy work by Council,” said the Mayor, Cr James Dooley.

“We look forward to working with our state and federal counterparts to secure additional investment at this site,” said the Mayor.

The pavilion will be located next to the western oval and is being designed to best meet the needs of reserve users. The pavilion will also offer a flexible social space available to the community.

“Council was also instrumental in lobbying for VicRoads to install the new traffic lights at the Wedge Road and Frankston-Dandenong Road intersection,” said the Mayor.

Council is delivering other works recommended as part of the Reserve’s master plan including an upgrade to sports ground lighting for both ovals.

Council has already completed the following projects on-site: • Full refurbishment of the Steve Thompson Oval (oval one) • Upgraded cricket practice nets • Improved traffic flow for the main reserve entry and a new access point • New car parking area • Sealing of the surface between the pavilion and oval one

• A new family recreation area • A shared path system with bench seating, tree planting and landscaping A 2016 update to the master plan for Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve currently outlines other priority projects including: • Resurface oval two (western oval) • Support establishment of additional clubs' presence on-site • Develop the current village green into a multiuser synthetic or grass sports field • Develop a regional playground • Develop tennis and netball facilities • Consolidate toilet facilities • Upgrade canteen and social room facilities, player change rooms and bathroom facilities • Develop an outdoor events area Combined, these projects would require a significant additional investment of more than $6 million.

The Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve currently accommodates clubs offering Auskick, football, cricket, netball and tennis.

Video arcade games Frankston Youth Central Two new video arcade games are proving popular with local youth, who can play the games free-ofcharge at Frankston Youth Central.

Young people aged 12–24 are welcome to drop-in to Frankston Youth Central, next to the Library on Playne Street. Open Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm.

Checkmate for local champion In the male dominated world of chess, 16-year-old local champion Rebecca Strickland is giving the lads a run for their money.

Rebecca has been the Frankston Chess Club Champion for the past two years and also earned a spot in the top 20 at the Australian Open Chess Championships in January.

Census data helps Council to plan Council encourages residents to participate in the Census as understanding exactly who lives in this community is critical to building the facilities and attracting the services that improve the lives of Frankston residents.

The Census is the best source of information about the number of people who live in the municipality, how old they are, where and how they live and work, and what their needs are.

Highlights from Frankston City’s 2016–2017 Budget The 2016–2017 Annual Budget includes a capped increase in the average base rate of 2.5 per cent.

The Victorian Government’s introduction of rate capping will restrict Council’s ability to deliver new initiatives and major projects in the future, while maintaining existing assets and providing services to residents.

With income from rates falling significantly under rate capping, Frankston City can expect a funding shortfall totalling $43 million over the next five years.

Whilst Council has not formally adopted a position at this stage, I am personally totally opposed to sky rail. Our sensitive coastal identity would be lost.

The fight to respect our place by the sea, in our living memory, goes back particularly to the 1950s and ‘60s with public meetings, protests and the formation of community groups aimed at saving the vegetation, wildlife, waterways, parks and reserves.

For instance, about 60 years ago the former Country Roads Board (CRB) proposed to plough another traffic lane through the foreshore reserve.

Fierce local opposition stopped the proposal immediately.

Similarly, the visual impact of sky rail would be utterly unacceptable, imprinting an industrialised scar upon our valuable landscape forever.

I recently attended the Frankston Environmental Friends Network 20 year celebration. This impressive group of volunteers work tirelessly to help conserve our natural environment.

We have a large number of parks and reserves in Frankston City and each group supports Council rangers, contributing countless hours of hard work to help keep our city beautiful. Current member groups are:

As this Council's four-year term comes to a close, I'd like to talk about my experience as a Councillor.

When I first juggled with the idea of standing for Council, I felt intimidated and a little out of my depth.

I thought that this kind of role was out of reach, but I took the steps and went for it. I'm glad I did.

I would have loved information on what would be expected of me, and what I could expect if elected.

I'd like to offer some insight now that may help others.

Frankston Waterfront Council has recently replaced timber supports and decking on the south side of Kananook Creek at Frankston Waterfront, strengthening the boardwalk and Creek wall.

Council conducts maintenance of this kind regularly to keep our city looking its best.

I was very proud to be among those attending the first Anzac Day services at our new War Memorial at Beauty Park in Frankston and would like to thank all those in the community who attended.

2016 is my 10 year anniversary serving the community as a Councillor and it has been a very satisfying experience. While my role is to represent the residents of South Ward, it is also to consider the whole Frankston municipality.

Frankston City just keeps getting better all the time.

I have lived here for more than 50 years and have witnessed massive growth and development. In recent years Council has prioritised major projects while continuing vital community services.

Some of Council’s major achievements over the past four years, of which we can all feel proud include: • Opening the new Frankston Regional Recycling and Recovery Centre (FRRRC) in Skye last September • The new Frankston War Memorial and Frankston Yacht Club building on the Waterfront • Opening the new Peninsula Aquatic Recreation Centre (PARC) • Frankston Football Club Function Centre • Sustainable City of the Year 2015 award by Keep Australia Beautiful • National Tourism Hall of Fame recognition for the Frankston Visitor Information Centre in 2015 for winning the top award three years in a row • New Banyan Fields Child and Family Centre in Carrum Downs There is also a lot more good work to come with the Victorian Government’s $50m investment in the Frankston Station precinct redevelopment including $13m in Young Street. This funding was secured, thanks to the community’s support of Council’s #speakupforfrankston advocacy campaign.

Frankston South stairs Also recently completed are improvements to some of the popular stairways that help link Frankston South to the Waterfront.

The stairs at Warringa Road have been extended so the lower section of this stairway is now constructed, improving access overall.

The Somme Avenue stairs were also repaired to improve pedestrian safety.

Violet Street works Thanks to local residents for your patience during Council’s recent drainage and road improvements undertaken in Violet Street in Frankston South. The new kerbs and road surface is a vast improvement but the bulk of the work is underground.

Council invests money every year enhancing drainage and aims to progressively address priority areas.

Come and Try Bowls

The City of Frankston Bowling Club is a friendly and welcoming venue and they’re offering a new chance to come and give the sport a try.

Come along and enjoy free lawn bowling on the first Sunday of the month between 10am and 12pm.

Newcomers will receive some free tuition if required and are welcome to stay for tea/coffee and cake. Please wear flat soled shoes or runners.

The club offers social and competitive bowls across all age groups and welcomes teenagers to grey-haired warriors. They are centrally located at the corner of Williams Street and Yuille Street, Frankston.

South Ward 14

The new venue accommodated the large crowds on the day, offering loads of space as well as a much safer and more accessible location than the former ‘street corner’ site of the Memorial. Two large TV screens also helped people view the services.

The RSL advises around 7,000 attended the dawn service and approximately 3,000 at the commemoration service and march.

Golf’s contribution Council received some interesting news recently from Golf Victoria about the impact of golf locally.

In Frankston City, the total contribution golf brings to the region was assessed as $23,853,782 per year.

As a breakdown this is through: • Association and Club expenditure: $13,998,385 • Regular participants, school programs and events: $3,097,265 • Golf tourism, retail and coaching: $6,758,132 Lots happening in our city centre There is currently a lot of activity happening in and around our city centre which is part of the ongoing transformation of Frankston City, including: • New apartment complexes are being built at 10–12 Davey Street and in Clyde Street, between Frankston Station and Bayside Shopping Centre • Three new businesses have recently opened in Olsen Street including a café, cross-fit centre and art supplies store – and another exciting business is joining the site very soon • The new street furniture is now in place in Wells Street – and it’s looking terrific • Council is working on a city centre master plan that will incorporate a vast array of projects ranging from multi-million dollar streetscape upgrades to more modest activities to encourage local outdoor dining Links creating opportunities EastLink is one of the Frankston Arts Centre’s valued sponsors and currently features two billboards along the route promoting Othello on 4 August.

Winter swimming and more at PARC

If you’re looking to keep active over winter, PARC in Frankston offers year-round options for staying fit. The temperature at PARC is always a balmy 30 degrees and the pool temperature is also increased during these colder months.

PARC is also introducing a loyalty card for children where each swimming lesson attended will add up to rewards to help keep youngsters excited about classes during winter.

#yourratesatwork Addressing family violence

Domestic violence is a subject close to my heart and I am committed to effective prevention and providing practical support. Breaking the silence on this previous taboo is just the beginning.

Funding is always an issue. I'm currently working on an event on Saturday 23 July in partnership with the Frankston District Netball Association, raising funds for Sisterhood FMP’s local domestic violence prevention programs. Other schools, businesses and sporting clubs may also like to consider annual fundraisers to help support domestic violence prevention or local crisis support services.

Thank you to Bayside Shopping Centre and the shopping centres in Langwarrin and Carrum Downs for allowing us to display domestic violence information posters to help address the extent of this issue.

Impact Volunteering is a not-for-profit organisation that provides a free matching-service for people looking to volunteer, as well as local organisations or groups needing to recruit volunteers.

Impact has successfully matched more than 2,000 volunteers locally and has more volunteers on their books looking for the right opportunity.

If your community group or not-for-profit organisation is looking for extra assistance, then please contact Impact Volunteering, as they may well be able to assist.

A vast range of agencies are already registered with Impact Volunteering such as Meals on Wheels, Dress for Success, OzChild and Ardoch Youth Foundation.

Volunteering is a core part of our community and Council services alone rely on volunteers to offer community services including Meals on Wheels, Library homework helpers and L2P mentor-drivers.

Many essential services are also powered by volunteers such as the SES and Lifeline.

Volunteers keep giving their time because of the satisfaction they derive from helping others and all the research shows that volunteers live happier and healthier lives.

Some people volunteer their time regularly or some prefer to help out at occasional one-off events. This service is designed to match the availability with the need.

Carrum Downs, Skye and Sandhurst is a fast growing area for young families and has a current population estimate of 34,364.

As part of the local area planning process, Carrum Downs, Skye and Sandhurst community members expressed a desire to improve parks and reserves in the local area as well as create a local multisport complex.

Council has been working hard to deliver exactly that and is continuing to invest in the area to ensure the community can remain active and healthy by having good access to sport and recreation facilities.

Council has allocated $1.3 million in the 2016–2017 budget to start building a new community sporting pavilion at the Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve in Wedge Road. Some of the design is still being finalised along with approvals, but all going well, we hope construction will start late 2016 and we estimate a 12 month duration.

The state government is contributing $1.05 million towards this project which is estimated to cost around $3.8 million.

Council previously sold a small parcel of land on Frankston-Dandenong Road, which accommodated the former Carrum Downs Memorial Hall. The revenue raised from this sale will be set aside to help fund this new pavilion.

This will be a multipurpose facility not just for the sporting clubs but also the community, for meetings and celebrations.

Council has recently completed negotiations with the CFA to sell them a section of land in the southwest corner of the Reserve. This now clears the path for the state government to build a new CFA complex in Carrum Downs. The sale proceeds will go towards improving the Reserve.

Thanks to all the sporting clubs who will be using the new community sporting pavilion for their contribution into the design process.

Walk on the less wild side

Keeping cosy with pool noodles Pool noodles are not just great fun in the pool, they are an incredibly cheap way to save on your winter heating bill.

Unpleasant cold draughts often seep through under internal door openings.

Pool noodles can easily be cut to shape to create the perfect under-door insulation system. Simply cut the noodle to length, and slice it along the spine so that it can slide straight onto the base of the door. With some delicate trimming you can shape it to fit around door jams and reduce its thickness if it’s too tight.

Draught sealing your home can save up to $160 in heating costs per year. So for just a few dollars per pool noodle, renters and home owners alike can save on energy costs this winter.

When the wind is howling across the bay, you can still enjoy a less wild dose of nature this winter by exploring the sheltered, serene Kananook Creek Reserve.

The creek runs parallel to the coastline, with a 7.5 km walking trail, linking the Seaford Wetlands to the Frankston Foreshore. Access the track from many points along the way where it intersects with local roads. The trail also continues along the scenic Waterfront boardwalk towards Olivers Hill.

The reserve is home to many species of flora, including coast banksia, sheoaks, swamp gums, coast tea-tree, white correa, sedges and rushes.

It is also a haven for native animals: you may be lucky enough to see lorikeets or honeyeaters feeding on nectar, or water birds such as black ducks, white-faced herons or cormorants that visit on their way to the Seaford Wetlands.

Plastic Free July

Will you accept the challenge?

Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness about the amount of single-use plastic in our lives.

It challenges us to avoid using single-use plastic in July, be it a day, a week or the entire month. If all single-use plastic is too daunting, try avoiding just the top four: plastic bags, disposable drink bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws.

Single-use plastic is anything that is intended to be used once then thrown away. While some singleuse/disposable plastic items can be recycled, many are thrown out with the rubbish and take up unnecessary space in landfill.

While recycling can help reduce waste to landfill, it still uses resources such as energy and water. It is better to reduce our consumption of single-use plastic items.

Plastic is not biodegradable. This means that over time, while in the right conditions it breaks down into small pieces, it never fully goes away. Sea creatures eat the tiny plastic fragments. When you eat seafood, there is a risk that you may be consuming the chemicals in this plastic.

Profiling our native species Sugar glider

If you live in the leafy areas of Frankston such as Frankston South or Langwarrin you may hear a repeated shrill ‘yapping’ on still nights. It could mean that you have a sugar glider family nearby.

The sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps) has a variety of calls including the yapping that is a danger warning to others. They will also emit a sharp threatening growl when fighting.

The sugar glider is a small nocturnal tree dwelling marsupial. Adults weigh 100–160 grams. The glider is covered with grey-brown fur with a prominent dark dorsal stripe that extends to the forehead. Its tail is long and furry. It has stretchy membranes that extend on both sides of the body between the front and back limbs, enabling it to glide up to 50 metres.

Sugar gliders are social animals and live in family groups. Their diet is varied and includes tree sap, nectar, pollen and invertebrates. Having a population of gliders in your area is good for the health of local trees as they consume large quantities of ‘leaf-mining’ and sap-sucking

insects that can stress trees and contribute to canopy dieback.

Sugar gliders live in woodlands that contain tree hollows and sufficient food. They can also be relatively common in well vegetated suburban areas, particularly where there are natural reserves and a canopy of mature hollow-bearing eucalypts. However, the old growth trees they require for nesting sites are in very short supply with various bird, bat and possum species competing for the space.

Loss of hollow-bearing trees is a key threat to the species which is also vulnerable to cats and foxes.

Cat attack is one of the most common causes of glider mortality.

Residents can help preserve sugar gliders by: • Keeping cats inside or in purpose-built runs • Retaining and protecting old hollow-bearing trees • Installing nesting boxes - seek advice on the right type of nest box for gliders • Planting indigenous understorey species such as wattles, grevilleas and banksias

Native gardening for wildlife Council recently hosted a workshop for inquisitive residents wanting to learn how to encourage wildlife to visit their suburban gardens.

You can create havens to encourage birds, reptiles, butterflies, frogs, microbats and other native animals.

Small steps such as being a responsible pet owner and reducing chemical use can have an immense impact on urban wildlife populations.

Topics discussed included improving the soil and providing a range of indigenous plant species to create a variety of micro-habitats to encourage native wildlife to rest, feed, shelter and live within our gardens as well as providing stepping stones from nearby reserves.

Sustainable school of the month St Jude’s Primary School

Local schools are making a big difference and were a key factor in Frankston City’s success at both the state and national level of the Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards.

One such school is St Jude’s Primary School in Langwarrin, a little school with a big environmental heart. Over recent years they have worked towards becoming a ‘5 Star ResourceSmart Sustainable School’, with two stars already and another two almost achieved.

Initiatives such as ‘nude food days’ help reduce wasteful packaging, where children are encouraged to bring healthy, ‘undressed’ food for lunch. A comprehensive waste collection system enables separation of paper, recyclables and food scraps, with the latter going to the worm farm, compost bins or chickens.

An enthusiastic team of ELFs (Environmental Leaders of the Future) spread environmental awareness to other students and staff, take care of the school’s extensive vegetable patch and look after the worms and compost.

Middle year students take responsibility for caring for the chickens, which provide eggs as well as garden produce for the school’s cooking program. Delicious meals are created by students using this produce, with surplus vegies often sold after school to raise funds for seeds and potting mix. None of this would happen without the commitment of dedicated teachers, in particular Helen Pepi and Martine Taylor.

Council is proud to celebrate St Jude’s environmental ethos, share their achievements and thank them for their contribution to keeping our corner of Victoria green and beautiful.

Small business grants for start-ups Apply for up to $15,000 Council’s popular Small Business Grants Program is a great avenue for start-ups to gain funding and fasttrack the growth of a new enterprise.

The program has a dedicated category for start-ups to apply to cover the costs associated with growing their business. Grants of up to $15,000 are available for investments such as marketing, capital works, specialised machinery, web development, training, product development and much more.

There are also categories available for home-based business graduation, relocation to Frankston City, emerging exporter and green business.

To apply under the start-up category, you must enter a commercial tenancy agreement (lease) in a commercial or industrial zone within Frankston City.

You must have entered this lease after 29 February 2016.

You must also attend one of the information sessions, where Council goes through eligibility criteria and key elements of the application process. Business coaching and workshops are also offered to prospective applicants to help encourage successful submissions.

Building a culture of entrepreneurship is a key focus of the Frankston City Economic Development Strategy 2016–2022. Creating jobs of the future requires innovation and very specific skills. Whilst there is significant concentration at the business end of the entrepreneurship life-cycle, there is little early intervention embedded within the Victorian and Australian education systems.

Council recently partnered with Kananook Primary School in Seaford and co-working provider, Collective Campus, to deliver a pilot entrepreneurship program called ‘Lemonade Stand’ to year five and six students. Collective Campus, based in Queens Road Melbourne, has undertaken research on earlyintervention entrepreneurship and concluded that secondary school is too late to attempt to plant the seeds for ideas generation and pursuing a career for yourself.

The Lemonade Stand program included training in the basics of business, identifying and pitching ideas, problem solving, building

prototypes, marketing, delivering products and measuring success.

Students were motivated to work together in small groups to formulate their ideas and present to the group.

Using sketches and design thinking exercises to bring life to their ideas, the two day workshop was a stimulating learning experience that the students enjoyed.

One group came up with the concept of a wristband that helps to assist recycling and track and measure our waste consumption. Another idea was a Netflix type platform – where consumers pay a monthly subscription that can be used for video gamers.

The students were also shown how modern technology is advancing with a 3D printer in the classroom producing a lifelike figurine of a rabbit out of plastic.

Whilst the long-term outcomes of this pilot are unlikely to be known for many years, the ideas that students came up with were extremely impressive and challenged them to think outside the square.

New Netball courts now open at Jubilee Park Frankston Relay For Life 2016 Local netballers are enjoying the new facilities at Jubilee Park in Frankston following the completion of their new court surface, shelters, lights and surrounds.

More than $2 million was invested as part of these works which were identified as a priority in Jubilee Park’s master plan.

The project was funded by Council in partnership with the Victorian Government, Frankston & District Netball Association and Frankston YCW Football Netball Club.

Car park upgrades improve access to sport and leisure facilities Skye Recreation Reserve Works are in progress at Skye Recreation Reserve on Ballarto Road. This includes a new sealed car park and crushed rock overflow car park along with associated drainage and landscaping improvements.

These works are part of the master plan for the Reserve and will improve access for Skye Cricket Club and Skye United Soccer Club members.
