Book and Bean Café Frankston Library’s newest addition, The Book and Bean Café is now open and serving amazing coffee and delicious food for you to enjoy while you explore all of the services that the library has to offer.

Focussing on fresh produce and healthy meals the café has a traffic light system of green, amber and red foods, depending on nutrient content such as sugar, fat and salt. The café focusses on green and amber foods, but a few red treat foods for special occasions will still be available when you need them. With no need to pack up and leave the library to get your morning or afternoon tea or lunch, you can now spend even longer at the library.

Amrita Arn from Nature Café Bar Calling all vegetarians and vegans, Nature Café Bar in Thompson Street has you covered. Offering a wide range of healthy, delicious and vibrant menu options from smoothies to burgers, budha bowls and even vegan wine, the owners of Nature Café Bar have created a vibe that keeps people coming back.

Tell us about yourself We are a family run business who truly work very hands on.

It was a lot of learning initially. We just had to be brave and believe that people would like what we had planned. I come from a family of foodies. My mum always made all her own preserves, chutneys, sauces, jams, syrups etc. and taught me the art of healthy delicious cooking. It was my husband that pushed to open the café. We looked at real estate for a whole year before finally finding the perfect premises which ticked all the boxes - enough space for big groups, a courtyard, street front seating, and plenty of parking. So we re-mortgaged the house and jumped right in. We are so relieved to have made it through the first year, which everyone says is the hardest. They weren’t wrong! We both held down 2 full time jobs and worked 80 hour weeks each to keep everything afloat, as well as juggling our children.

We are both so excited for our future, and the future of Nature Café Bar. Why did you choose to come to Frankston?

Firstly, Frankston was local to us, and meant not a long commute. We also felt a sense of duty to add something more to Frankston. We hear too often that Frankston has “so much potential’, it’s got all the bones of an incredible town, and has a huge population, so we felt it could definitely sustain another café with something different to offer.

Why did you choose to open a Vegetarian and Vegan Café?

For me there was really no option. I was born and bred a vegetarian, and have literally never even tried meat. Primarily we wanted to offer delicious healthy food.

Eating a plant based diet has so many benefits that we wanted to show people that they could be so satisfied and have a huge variety of meals without the need to eat animals.

What surprises people the most when they visit?

We get so many comments on how lovely it is inside (the decor and vibe etc.). I think when people stumble across it for first time they seem blown away to have found a hidden gem in Frankston. Secondly I think it’s our extensive menu, with so many unusual ingredients to try.

What is your favourite menu item?

This is too hard to answer. It’s like choosing a favourite child! At the moment I’m loving the breakfast burger with a side of sweet potato fries. It’s on a black charcoal bun with bbq jackfruit, bean curd fried egg, tomato chutney, hash brown, tomato, lettuce, mayo. Then I wash it down with my favourite smoothie, the feijoa goer. It’s tangy and refreshing with feijoa and pineapple so it reminds me of home (Kiwis will understand).

What would you recommend for those who are new to vegetarian and vegan food?

I think initially if they want to stay in their comfort zone they should try the b.l.a.t sandwich, or charcoal chicken burger with fries, or even the Nachos. They are winners with everyone.

What is the best thing about having a business in Frankston?

I love that we can go to the beach straight after work, in just 2 minutes. I also love the people. They are just genuinely lovely and easy going. We have never had any issues here, even at night. We seem to attract the best people from all over the Peninsula. I also really like that we can source some really great local products and produce from the Peninsula.
