Snuggle up with Downunder Ugg Boots There’s a tiny church in Carrum Downs, built in the early 1900’s and heritage listed in Australia. Downunder Ugg Boots have been trading here for over 40 years, sourcing the very best sheepskins for their Australian designed footwear. Susanne Horman from Robinsons Bookshop Victoria’s oldest general independent bookshop began and can still be found right here in Frankston City. In a world where digital technologies and communications are growing by the minute, Robinsons Bookshop is a place of intrigue and excitement engaging the next generation of booklovers.

Tell us about yourself I have 30 years’ experience in strategic planning, market research and business development and have helped some of the world’s biggest brands with customer satisfaction and retention, new product development and advertising.

12 years ago it felt like time for a sea-change and I wanted to do something with my underlying true passion — books.

I had studied literature and also had a novel on the go and the opportunity to purchase Robinsons came up at exactly the right time. At the time I was a single mum with children aged 6 and 8 and it was a massive undertaking. The first couple of years learning about the business and the book industry were very challenging.

Why did you choose to come to Frankston to take ownership of Robinson’s?

I lived on the other side of Melbourne in Montmorency and had only ever been to Frankston once before. In the lead up to the business handover we took many day trips down the coast and got to know the area. It almost felt like we were moving overseas as Eastlink was not yet completed and the kids counted how many of the 50 traffic lights on Springvale Rd between Frankston and Montmorency were red versus green on each journey. Generally we caught about 35 red lights and it took 2 hours! In terms of why — well as soon as I visited Robinsons that first time I knew it was where I wanted to put my energy. It was home from the first moment.

What surprises people the most when they visit Robinson’s Bookshop?

I think it’s the depth of range and the excitement of discovery of treasures as you walk around exploring the store. We mostly hand-pick one copy of lots of interesting things and people never know what they will find on each

visit. We purchase almost 2,000 new releases each month, so the selection of books is always changing.

When digital technologies continue to grow, what do you think keeps people coming back to Robinson’s?

Robinsons is a special place that in a lot of ways is the heart of the community. Robinsons is about sharing stories, experiences and a deep passion for books. Each time you visit you can get recommendations and have conversations with people who love books. Robinsons is authentic and caring and you just don’t get that online. When you invest 8–10 hours of your time reading a book — you want it to be time well spent. Life is too short to be reading the wrong book. Robinsons mission is to ‘Change lives by getting the right book in the right hands’ and that is what keeps the whole team motivated and striving to do their best each day.

What book would you recommend this winter?

If you are looking for some great fiction I would recommend The Last Adventure of Napoleon Sunshine. It is about Napoleon, an eighty-five year old restless spirit who decides to say “To hell with it all” He wants a new Life! He doesn’t want his final years to be exiled in a retirement home.

What’s coming up at Robinsons Bookshop that everyone should know about?

Robinsons Frankston will soon start re-fitting the store to look like an old library in a mansion with floor to ceiling dark timber shelving and old fashioned lighting. The café is also planned to re-open with a book themed menu. We will be hosting lots of author events, literary High Teas and book clubs. There will be many ways for the community to engage with books and with each other on the theme of books.
