Message from the Mayor In order to achieve this, Council is committed to the continuation of the Build Your Business program, which offers a wide range of training opportunities, business grants, marketing platforms, networking opportunities, investment facilitation and online forums.

I am pleased to present Council’s Build Your Business program for 2016.

Frankston City Council is proud of its track record when it comes to supporting small business. For many years Council has delivered innovative programs that have led to the growth of local businesses and employment opportunities. There are now ninety more Frankston City businesses employing five or more people, compared to 2011, demonstrating this is a great place to start and grow a business.

In December 2015, Council adopted the Frankston City Economic Development Strategy 2016-2022.

The strategy contains nine priorities, one of which focuses on having a ‘vibrant and resilient small business community’.

Council’s work with small business has been recognised nationally, with a number of awards and an independent ranking of fourth in Australia for ‘local economic development support’ by the Regional Australia Institute. Frankston City sits behind only the Cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Gold Coast under this ranking, making the Build Your Business program one of the finest in Australia.

With access to funding, support, regulatory assistance and training, Council is a great place to start a conversation about your new enterprise.

Small Business Grants Startups, growing home-based enterprises and relocating businesses can apply for a grant of up to $15,000. Grant recipients also have access to the Build Your Business services featured in this publication.

Frankston City Entrepreneurs’ Network The Entrepreneurs’ Network is a forum that startups can tap into for growth advice and networks. It provides an opportunity to connect with innovative, high-growth local enterprises. Startups present to the group about their concept and then receive real-time advice about their venture.

Small Business Investment program Council can assist businesses with site selection and regulatory processes such as statutory planning, environmental health, building and local laws. There is a particular focus on assisting startups to gain all the necessary approvals in a timely manner.

Commercialising your new idea An intensive course over two evenings on how to turn your idea into a profitable business. Participants will learn how to objectively assess the business potential of their idea, innovation or invention and get the right support and advice. See page 19.

It will inspire and inform communities to think about the possibility of starting their own enterprises by linking them to training opportunities, investors and hearing from international experts. *

Job Matching Service

Council offers one low cost 45 minute business coaching session to businesses located within Frankston City. Whether you are starting a new business or trying to grow your existing business, a business coach can help you to get on the right track in a range of disciplines, including marketing, finance, human resources, export and much more.

This is a FREE service that any Frankston City business can use to promote a local job: full-time, part-time or casual to a database of over 8000 local students and graduates.

Frankston Visitor Information Centre

The Build Your Business – Frankston City group on LinkedIn is an excellent free forum to discuss local business issues and initiatives, whilst networking in an online forum. Over 500 businesses are members of the group.

The Frankston Visitor Information Centre (FVIC) provides expert visitor services including accommodation bookings, event ticketing and local and Australian Made retail products to over 300,000 people each year.

This workshop provides an insight into some of the basic elements involved in responding to tenders and will explore common tender issues.

Participants will leave with practical tips for preparing quality tender submissions.

Session 1 (6pm–7pm): Starting a business and avoiding the traps At this session, the Commissioner will provide an overview of the thousands of commercial disputes his office successfully deals with each year, and offer tips on how you can reduce the likelihood of your business being involved in a commercial dispute.

Participants will also learn about the changes to Commonwealth legislation coming into effect in November 2016.

Presenter Aidan McDonald will explain what banks and lenders are looking for and provide practical tips on how to impress and ensure success.

Non-traditional methods of raising funds for your business such as grants, business angels and crowd funding will also be examined.
