Within this newsletter is information that you will find helpful as you prepare for the start of the fall semester at the College.

I hope your summer has been going well, despite heavy rains. The campus had minimal issues with the record breaking rain fall on July 12 and 13. Nothing happened to impede the construction on the science center and the water that created some big ponds on the grounds has receded. Several businesses and homes in Franklin suffered severe flood damage, however.

The college community is preparing for your return to campus and is eager to have you back to campus for the start of the new academic year.

This newsletter has information for returning students. It has been sent to all students by email and may also be found online in the student affairs section of MyFC. Parents will receive a link to view this newsletter online as well.

Please let me know if you need any assistance or have any questions as you finalize arrangements to return to campus.

Returning students will be able to check into your fall room assignments on Sunday, August 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Just go to the main office of your residence hall to begin the check in process and receive your room keys.

Not returning to campus housing: If you have decided you will not be returning to Franklin or if you have changed your housing plans for the fall, please email the Director of Residence Life (jknight@franklincollege.edu).

Continuing students who cancel their housing contract after May 10 (but prior to occupancy) will receive a $500 cancellation fee. After you have occupied your room, the cancellation fee increases to 25% of the contract ($1,375).

Only athletes, student organization members, and students with prior approval will be allowed to move in early.

If you are involved with one of these groups, your coach or advisor will provide more details regarding your early arrival. Should you have any questions about this policy or need to make arrangements for an early arrival for other reasons, please email the Director of Residence Life (jknight@franklincollege.edu) by 4 p.m. on Friday, August 4.

All full- and part-time students and visitors are required to display a parking tag when parking on campus.

Students may purchase their parking tags beginning August 17, during normal business hours in the Security Office, located on the lower level of the Napolitan Student Center. Parking regulations and a campus parking map will be provided when a tag is purchased. The cost of a parking tag is $40 per year and is charged to your account. No cash or checks are accepted.

Everyone must pre-register before getting a permit. Instructions with important information will be sent to your Franklin College email address in early August. Permits will not be issued without this information. Parking regulations are enforced year-round.

Visitors may obtain a temporary parking tag any time by contacting the security officer on duty at (317) 738-8888.

When requesting a temporary parking tag, the requestor must provide their license plate number and the make of their automobile to the security officer. The security office is located in the southeast corner in the lower level of the Student Center.

Parking tag enforcement will begin on the evening of August 28 - the first day of classes.

From viewing a list of outstanding documents required to checking the status of their awards, students have 24/7 access to their financial aid information via the Online Financial Aid System (https:// fcaid.franklincollege.edu). Please check with your student to make sure they have completed and submitted all requested documentation (found on the Docum ent s and Loans tab in their online aid account) and have accepted all of the awards they want to receive (done on the Accepting Your Awards tab in their online aid account). Failure to submit requested information or accept awards may result in loss of aid.

The Office of Financial Aid has an open-door policy, encouraging families to ask questions. We want to make sure that you understand every step of the financial aid process. Career Services will be hosting a part-time jobs fair on Friday September 8, 2017 in the atrium of the Napolitan Student Center from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Local businesses from Franklin, the Edinburgh Outlet Mall and Greenwood will be on-hand to tell about their openings, hand out applications and, in some cases, do on-the-spot interviews.

If you are considering working part-time while in college, this is a great opportunity to make connections to help you make money and develop valuable professional skills.

Once again, Franklin College’s Professional Development Program and Career Services will co-sponsor a series of workshops, speakers and events designed to develop and strengthen professional competencies critical for students preparing for today’s job market. These events help students consider the relationship between liberal arts competencies and pre-professional skills.

The heart of these events are the various opportunities for Franklin College seniors to network with Franklin College alumni and employers. Repeatedly, these experiences have facilitated internship and career opportunities for students. Seniors in particular should join us for this year’s series as they prepare to transition into the professional workplace or graduate school.

“FC on the Town” is a weekend programming series sponsored by the Student Activities Center. Engaging off-

campus programs are sponsored every month in an effort to familiarize students with social opportunities in the community as well as encourage participation in weekend programming. The first event is September 8 at Ritter’s Frozen Custard. The purpose of Student Congress is to support the values of Franklin College, to direct and promote student activities, to develop a spirit of progress and tradition and act as a liaison between the student body and faculty, staff and administrators. Student Congress appreciates the participation and input of all students. Meetings are held every Wednesday throughout the school year at 6 p.m. in the Napolitan Student Center, Room 245.

This fall, Student Congress will be accepting applications for freshman, at-large, and commuter representatives. If you are interested in joining one of the most active organizations on campus, pick up an application at the Activities Fair or email student congress President, Taylor Williams at Taylor.Williams@franklincollege.edu .

This year Student Congress will be focusing on continuing to make the Franklin College campus lively, vibrant and inviting for all students. If you have ideas or want to be a part of shaping the campus culture, we encourage you to run for a position on Student Congress

The Counseling Center welcomes all students who need support through counseling services. The Counseling Center hours are as follows: Monday – Thursday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Franklin College is committed to providing students with the opportunity to live with and learn from people from different cultures, races, sexual orientations, religions, etc. It is the hope of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion that students take the opportunity to interact with others to help them fully develop as a person. It will be their experiences in and out of the classroom that will help prepare them to be contributing members of a global society. The mission of the Center is to support students, faculty/staff and the community by promoting the value of diversity, broadening multicultural awareness, advancing cultural competence and encouraging cross-cultural collaborative relationships through education and advocacy. Below are a few programs in which your student can participate.

Brother to Brother (B2B) is a peer led role-modeling program designed to aid in the personal, cultural and educational development and retention of minority male students during their matriculation through Franklin College. Brother to Brother seeks to provide a positive atmosphere that will encourage students to exhibit uncompromising character and academic excellence. It also aids in establishing a cultural foundation for minority male students through small group bonding activities. Students will engage in networking, opportunities, build connections amongst one another and set standards of excellence for themselves that they will hold each other accountable for reaching and maintaining. They will also have the opportunity to interact with positive minority male role models from the community in a supportive environment.

The B.O.S.S. (Building Opportunities through Support and Structure) Mentoring Program pairs underrepresented Franklin College students with professionals either on or off campus. The purpose is to provide students with successful adult mentors who can provide leadership and guidance in all areas of life. It also serves as an additional level of support to underrepresented students at Franklin College which should in turn assist in the retention rates of the underrepresented student population. The B.O.L.D. (Building Our Leaders through Diversity) House is a living and learning community that aims to promote an understanding and respect for multiculturalism and diversity and to provide intellectual, social and cultural programs focused on multicultural enrichment. The B.O.L.D. House is located in the Maple House on campus. The B.O.L.D. House is currently looking for three more residents for the 2017-2018 school year. Franklin College Dining Services is excited to welcome students for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Federal College Work-Study Students with demonstrated financial need may be allocated a specific amount of money within their financial aid as part of the Federal Work-Study Program. Students who qualify may earn up to the amount allocated by working no more than 20 hours per week in various offices on and off campus. To be eligible, a student must submit the FAFSA annually prior to the deadline and follow the steps listed below to obtain a position. Please note that acceptance into the work-study program does not guarantee employment. Furthermore, work-study funds are only paid relative to work performed.

Steps to Finding a Work-Study Job

       

From the MYFC homepage, click on “Departments” in the left toolbar.

Click on the “Student Financial Services” department.

Click on the link in the middle of the page, “Students: Click here to navigate to our Student Employment page!”

Click on Student Applicants. (This page will give you the options of searching the database for jobs, reviewing recently posted jobs, options for email notification of openings, or linking to the Job Planner which will let you view jobs that have been offered in the past.)

Review Job Descriptions. (Click on the job title to view details about the job such as pay, hours, duties, etc. Please look closely at Funding Source to determine if this job is open to any students or only those students which qualify for Work-Study.)

Click here to apply for this job. (Choose this link, located at the top of the job description, when you wish to apply for the job.)

Fill out Application. (Completely fill out the application for the position. Be sure to provide accurate information and a phone number in which you can easily be reached.)

Submit Application. (When you are satisfied with the application, simply click on submit application. A copy of your application will be directly sent to the job’s supervisor. The supervisor will contact those students whom they wish to interview and/or hire for the position.)

Tips for Finding a Work-Study or On-Campus Job

   

Apply to many jobs to increase your chances. There is no limit.

The best time to find a job is the beginning of first semester. Apply early.

Keep schedules in mind when applying. For example, if you are an athlete, your time could be limited in the evening.

—Hannah Adams Ingram Hannah earned her Doctor of Philosophy, Religion and Psychological Studies from the Iliff School of Theology and the University of Denver in December of 2016. She has a Master of Theological Studies, Theology and Religious Education from the Emory University Candler School of Theology and a Bachelor of Arts from Anderson University. She will be ordained this month by the United Church of Christ.

Hannah has worked in a variety of higher education roles, including as adjunct faculty, a student life coordinator and writing center fellow. She has served in congregational ministry as a lay leader, guest preacher, retreat leader, Sunday school teacher and in worship planning.

In May 2017, Russ completed his M.S. in Higher Education from Penn State University and served in LGBTQA student services, student conduct, and student athlete academic support services positions. While pursuing his degree, he also worked as a Residence Director at Brown University through the ACUHO-I Housing Internship Program.

Between 2012 and 2015, Russ completed a MAT at Duke University and subsequently taught high school mathematics in Durham Public Schools. In 2012, he completed a B.S. in mathematics and B.A. in religious studies from Birmingham-Southern College. Russ is part of Birmingham-Southern College's Phi Beta Kappa chapter and Omicron Delta Kappa circle.
