Greetings, Franklin College alumni and friends!
Homecoming is always a special time at Franklin College a time when generations of Grizzlies return to campus to reconnect, reminisce and celebrate all that makes this place so unique. This year’s celebration was made even more meaningful as we gathered on Friday, October 10 for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Elwood Fitness Center renovation and restoration project.
This $9.5 million project marks a defining moment in the life of the College. The Elwood Fitness Center is far more than a building it is a bridge between generations. Its storied walls once echoed with the cheers of the legendary Franklin Wonder Five basketball team, whose 1923 national championship brought unparalleled acclaim to Franklin College. For generations, it has stood as a gathering place for competition, camaraderie and community.
Soon, the renovated and revitalized facility will once again serve as a vibrant hub of activity, supporting recreation, wellness and athletic excellence for today’s students. It will include spaces for personal fitness activities, recreational and intramural sports, and athletic offices, locker rooms and support services for football, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams.
In a time when it can be tempting to discard the old to make way for the new, Franklin College has chosen a different path one that honors our past while investing in our future. Preserving the historical integrity of the exterior while transforming the interior into a modern, state-of-the-art facility reminds us that progress and tradition can coexist in powerful ways. Together, they strengthen the fabric of our institution and deepen the pride we all share as Franklin College alumni and friends.
As we continue this transformative project, I hope you will become a part of the effort. To date, we have raised more than $7 million. Opportunities remain for your support, as we watch the exciting construction begin on a timeline that targets completion in 15 months. Your philanthropy can help sustain the legacy of excellence that defines Franklin College. Please contact Vice President Nora Brems at nbrems@franklincollege.edu.
I have said often that this is the most unique project underway on any college campus, and it is something for all of us to be very proud to celebrate. I invite you to take a moment to view the video recap below of the groundbreaking ceremony and reception. It was another great day to be a Grizzly!
