We recite these words during Shabbat morning tefillah, asking God to reward those who dedicate themselves to communal work with physical and spiritual wellbeing. Individuals who take on communal service - often tireless and sometimes thankless tasks - allow our community to grow and thrive.

This year we honor Robert Aronson, an individual whose decades of service to the betterment of Detroit’s Jewish community has impacted nearly all its residents. All 16 graduating classes at Frankel Jewish Academy are the beneficiaries of Bob’s vision for Jewish education in our community. As the longtime former head of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Bob showed tremendous leadership when he was asked to help in the establishment of a non-denominational, college preparatory Jewish high school.

A visionary who often took a long-view approach toward the future, Mr. Aronson not only supported the founding of the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit, he also built relationships with philanthropists encouraging them to support the school. Most notable is the Frankel family, who became the naming donor to Frankel Jewish Academy.

Throughout his career as the head of our Federation, Mr. Aronson developed a reputation for innovation, building strong relationships and mentoring wonderful professionals. Despite our population size relative to other cities, Detroit’s Federation was consistently seen as a national leader in its ability to galvanize community support.

Today, FJA honors Bob’s leadership, which is part of Frankel Jewish Academy’s mission: leadership resulting in a positive impact on the world.

Nearly two decades after creating the strong bond between Federation and FJA, Federation’s continued support of our mission to inspire students to think critically, creatively and compassionately, remains just as strong.

We express our gratitude for his vision, commitment to our success and the pledge of communal responsibility that underscores his accomplishments.

Rabbi Eric Grossman becomes second Head of School.

Total enrollment exceeds 200 students. The school year begins in its current facility within the JCC.

2006

JAMD receives a significant gift from Jean and Samuel Frankel; the school is renamed in their honor becoming Frankel Jewish Academy.

The Jewish Academy of Metro Detroit begins with 9th and 10th grade classes operating first from the lower level of the JCC before migrating to a collection of trailers. Rabbi Lee Buckman is named Head of School.

A group of Hillel Day School parents decides to start a new community high school, eventually pitching the idea to Federation CEO Bob Aronson.

Even though Detroit is Robert P. Aronson’s adopted city, you would never know that this third generation Milwaukeean wasn’t a native son. His tremendous impact on the Detroit Jewish community is well established.

Aronson became Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit in October of 1989. His leadership ushered in a two-decade transformation of the Jewish Community of Detroit. From the construction of the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Twp., to the establishment of the Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit, the original name of Frankel Jewish Academy, Aronson’s fingerprints are everywhere.

From 1989 through 2009, Aronson served as CEO of the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit. During his tenure, he was known as a master relationship-builder, bringing together the philanthropic greats of Detroit to transform the Jewish Federation into a national exemplar of Jewish community excellence and philanthropic innovation. His singular vision to make Detroit a thriving center of philanthropy and culture can be seen today, from the creation of the Millennium and Centennial Endowment Funds to build the future of the community, to the redevelopment of the Applebaum Campus. It was Bob who secured the gift from Jean and Sam Frankel that solidified the Academy’s future and allowed us to acknowledge their gift through our current name.

After twenty years at the helm of Federation, Aronson made the choice to seek new challenges outside Detroit. He became the Director of Birthright Israel during its early growing period and served as President of the Steinhardt Foundation for Jewish Life from 2007-2014. Returning to Detroit, Aronson continues to support and grow our community as the Chief Development Advisor to the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit.

As a longtime Zionist, Aronson has deep roots in Israel. His grandparents were the founders of Kibbutz Yif’at in the Central Galilee region and his commitment to Israel has punctuated his entire professional career. He has taken countless groups of leaders and future leaders to Israel on missions.

Father to three adult children, Max, Natasha and Isaac, Bob remains as committed today to his philanthropic career as ever - for their and successive generations’ success. Aronson is also an adjunct professor at University of Michigan’s School of Social Work, mentoring the next generation of Jewish professionals.
