HEAD OF SCHOOL Frankel Jewsh Academy is a multidimensional community of learners where students pursue their studies and teachers hone their craft in collaborative and supportive ways.

We are also a community of parents, students, alumni, and supporters. FJA is a community where each of our constituents benefits, contributes, and participates in ways that enhance and strengthen our school.

What unifies us is a set of shared aspirations and principles, which are embedded in our mission and expressed in our core values. They permeate every interaction and direct all our efforts to attain and actualize them. This year’s honorees embody FJA’s core values in all they do both personally and professionally. Samantha and Ross Partrich have demonstrated leadership as FJA ambassadors, spreading our school’s message and recruiting students as well as supporters.

Alumni honoree Rachel Devries upholds the core value of serving the Jewish community by volunteering with organizations that make the world a better place. Faculty honoree Melanie Sesi pursues excellence in scholarship not only through her teaching but through the enduring relationships she has made and upholds with students both current and past.

Our shared goal of investing in a bright global and communal Jewish future is what energizes all of our supporters. We are unified by the desire to foster respect for others within our students, and the mitzvah of chesed and compassion. We believe that to be successful, students need to develop critical thinking skills while learning more about themselves, their Jewish heritage and Jewish values. We know that each student is different but all require support, guidance, and nurturing that is personal and encouraging.

The remarkable synergistic relationships we share with our communities have fortified FJA from conception through infancy and adolescence. These twenty years of incredible growth could not have happened without you.

Samantha and Ross Partrich, Frankel Jewish Academy 2020 honorees, possess deep roots in Detroit’s community. They’re devoted to Jewish education, charity and civic involvement – foundations on which they’ve built their family. Steeped in traditions of tzedakah from their parents, they watch proudly as their three children – two FJA graduates and one a junior – incorporate identical principles into their lives.

Samantha graduated from Andover High School and the University of Michigan; she taught kindergarten at Brookside School. Ross graduated from Cranbrook, University of Michigan and NYU, then pursued a career in real estate. The Partrichs enrolled their eldest at Hillel Day School. “We knew that Jewish day schools produced great young people. We believed that the Jewish values taught there would be significant for our family.” Pleased by their daughter Tatum’s experience, the Partrichs’ sons Jackson and Ari followed her. Samantha and Ross served on Hillel’s board.

Tatum advanced to FJA, followed by her brothers. On top of excellent academic preparation, all three have embraced the importance of Jewish education, love for Israel and devotion to religious, civic and community causes. In Samantha’s words: “our family has learned to celebrate and understand Judaism in a way that has enriched our lives.”

Rachel Devries is a member of the class of 2009, having spent two years as a student in the original JAMD trailers and two years on the second floor of the JCC. She served proudly as “Female Class Clown” all four years, as voted on by her peers.

After high school, Rachel graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Studies and from Touro University Nevada with a Master’s Degree in Camp Administration and Leadership. She has devoted herself to Jewish communal service, having worked for Tamarack Camps, JVS Human Services and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

Rachel has developed professional networking events for young Jewish adults around metropolitan Detroit and coached more than 50 young Jewish adults in finding satisfying employment. Rachel has volunteered her time and expertise to speak to students at Farber Hebrew Day School, MSU Hillel and Wayne State University Hillel on employment strategies and living a Jewish life post-college.

She is a member of Tamarack Camp’s Alumni Committee and JFMD’s Jewish Working Women’s Network Committee. Biweekly, through Henry Ford Health Systems, Rachel volunteers with SandCastles Grief Support Program for children and their families.

Rachel lives in Birmingham, working as a Performance Coach at Dale Carnegie Training where she guides individuals and businesses through positive transformations. She became certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator and is now a Carnegie Certified Sales Professional.

Rachel’s passion to enhance the quality of life of the Jewish people, and of all people, stems from her family: Sheri z’’l, Jeff, Danny, Courtney, David and Nina. Matt Moss, Rachel’s boyfriend, follows that same tradition in encouraging Rachel to pursue her passions – even helping Rachel set up for her 10-year FJA reunion this past November!

Melanie Sesi earned a bachelors from MSU in 2005 before beginning her teaching career in Lapeer in 2006. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in 2006 and joined the team at FJA in 2011. Melanie has coached varsity volleyball and taught several social studies courses. Currently, Melanie teaches US Government & Economics and AP US Government & Politics. Melanie values teaching life lessons and helping students make connections to the real world. Melanie has planned and will lead the school’s first trip to Washington, DC for students to see our government at work.

Melanie feels FJA is a place where not only students can grow and find themselves, but faculty can too. She is grateful for the mentorship and professional development programs FJA provides, and she helps oversee. Melanie has grown closer to her own faith, after visiting Israel on the FJA staff trip. Melanie is confident she would not be the teacher, friend, person, or mother she is if not for FJA. Melanie lives in Rochester Hills, with husband, Lance, their two sons, William (5), Tommy (4) and their dog, Lana. Melanie enjoys traveling and her time with her large and loving extended family.
