avid Pankow, Owen Butler and I drove to Wells College in Aurora on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake on the morning of Friday, November 10, 2006. Our purpose was to visit the Wells Book Arts Center. The drive took about an hour and a half. Owen and David talked a lot about the possibilities for new programs in books arts at RIT on the way down. I sat in the back seat taking pictures and occasionally joining the conversation. We arrived at Wells College shortly after 10:00 am and were greeted by Terry Chouinard, Center Director, and Nancy Gil, Assistant Director for Curricular Planning. The Center occupies three floors of the oldest building on the Wells campus. It shares the building with the Fine Arts department. Terry gave us a history of the Center as he escorted us on a tour of the facilities. The Wells Book Arts Center was established in 1993 to instruct in all areas of book arts and technologies. Since then it has grown to become one of the most famous book arts programs in the nation, offering an array of classes, lectures, workshops and symposia. After our tour of the Center, David took Owen and me to lunch at the Aurora Inn where we dined on seafood chowder and lobster rolls. After lunch the manager took us upstairs to see one of the magnificent guest rooms overlooking the lake. Before heading back home, we stopped at McKenzie-Childs, maker of hyper-ornate, hyper-expensive home furnishings and housewares. Despite Owen’s initial reluctance to stop, he walked out of the store carrying two bags full of merchandise. This book was produced, published, and made available for online purchase on the afternoon of Saturday, November 11, 2006. Google my name and the title of the book and you will find it.
