This essay (2019) compares the impact of the Caravaggesque revolution during the seventeenth century. In particular, the focus of attention will be on a parallelism between Caravaggio (1571-1610) and the Dutch counterpart, Gerard van Honthorst1 (1592-1656). By analyzing their respective characteristics, their historical contexts, education, their mastery of an established technique and their personal flourishes, the primary purpose is showing their different contributions to the definition of a new realism, influenced by their time and place. Caravaggio was and is still nowadays a central figure in western art, and Honthorst, his follower, is representative of a particular type of Dutch-Caravaggisti.
