Il Progetto Inside Mondriaan Verso la fine del 2012, iniziai a lavorare al “Progetto Inside Mondriaan”.

Si può definire un lavoro “collaterale” a quello che porto avanti con la mia personale produzione artistica. Scaturisce unicamente dalla particolare passione che nutro nei confronti di Mondrian. Passione che mi ha portato a studiarlo, analizzarlo e poi a sperimentare delle possibili elaborazioni, da applicare in vari campi: Pittura, Scultura, Design, Installazioni e Architettura. Ovviamente niente di nuovo in tutto questo e certamente non fa di me un “esperto” di Mondrian. Già altri hanno utilizzato i suoi lavori in tanti settori, ma nella maggior parte dei casi limitandosi a riprodurre le sue opere su superfici di vario tipo.

Ho cercato, quindi, di dare un “taglio diverso” al Progetto Inside Mondriaan, seguendo un processo creativo ispirato fin da subito da idee di natura più concettuale e sperimentale, che avessero come fine ultimo quello della “terza dimensione”.

Purtroppo avendo scarse risorse, appare ancora un lavoro “incompiuto” e con molti progetti iniziati ancora da sviluppare. Ed essendo un lavoro che porto avanti esclusivamente come attività di studio e ricerca personale, inevitabilmente i tempi si dilatano.

Ciò che ho definito “taglio diverso” si basa su due principi fondamentali.

Il primo è di natura più tecnica.

La base di ogni elaborazione e sperimentale applicazione, sono, appunto, le opere di Mondrian.

Queste hanno un preciso disegno, hanno una precisa composizione di linee e piani colorati. E questa impostazione non deve subire il minimo spostamento.

Non va cambiata in alcun modo, deve conservare la sua “perfetta armonia”.

Quindi, prima di iniziare a sperimentare le diverse applicazioni, eseguo una attenta ricostruzione dell’opera. Il disegno ottenuto, diventa lo schema rigido ed inamovibile, sul quale opero.

Con queste basi ho sviluppato migliaia di altri disegni e immagini, con soluzioni che simulano la terza dimensione. Tutto il materiale prodotto, è una banca dati dalla quale attingo per sperimentare le varie applicazioni in altri campi artistici, creativi e architettonici. Il risultato è che ogni opera prodotta, raffigura, “sempre”, l’opera originale di Mondrian.

Il secondo principio è di natura più concettuale.

Per quanto vi siano molti che considerano l’arte di Mondrian un qualcosa di “semplice” o addirittura di “infantile”, in realtà è una delle forme d’arte più complesse e difficili da comprendere che sia mai esistita.

Quello che bisogna considerare è che il “suo astrattismo” è stato letteralmente “creato”. Non esisteva alcuna forma d’arte che si esprimesse in questa chiave.

Tutte le correnti artistiche, compresa anche quella Cubista, Surrealista, Futurista, o qualsiasi altra che restituisce una diversa visione della realtà, si basano, comunque, su una “figurazione”. Intendo dire che qualsiasi soggetto viene rappresentato, in forme e scenari diversi alterati in ogni possibile soluzione, è sempre in qualche modo “riconoscibile”.

Prendiamo ad esempio Picasso, o qualsiasi altro esponente di queste correnti artistiche. Grande genio e certamente artista che hanno fatto la storia, che prendo come esempio solo per esprime un concetto.

Per quanto Picasso trasformasse in una scomposizione cubista un qualsiasi elemento reale, restituendo la sua visione e lasciando a te il compito di codificarla, puoi sempre “riconoscere”, o comunque individuare, di quale soggetto si tratta. Che sia un ritratto, un paesaggio, un cavallo, e così via. Insomma, quello che voglio dire, non per sminuire l’opera di altri grandi artisti, ma in tutto ciò che veniva rappresentato, la novità stava nella “diversa visione” della realtà, che restava comunque sempre percettibile. Qualcosa di nuovo, che fosse veramente “inesistente” e mai elaborato, ancora non era nato.

Quindi l’Astrattismo, non solo di Mondrian, ma anche di tanti altri artisti, in quegli anni è piombato come una “bomba atomica”, scardinando tutto quello che si conosceva dell’arte. Oggi tutti conosciamo l’arte astratta, quindi la valutiamo, apprezziamo o disprezziamo, ma bisogna calarsi nella realtà di quel tempo, quando non esisteva.

Ecco che, quasi fosse una magia, appare il “Neoplasticismo”, nasce “l’Uomo Nuovo”, si genera una visione che va oltre, che sintetizza la realtà, per restituirla in una chiave “non riconoscibile”. Per decodificarla è necessario compiere un viaggio in un’altra dimensione.

L’intero percorso artistico di Mondrian, passato attraverso varie correnti, unito a tutte le sue esperienze di vita, non sono stati altro che la preparazione, la palestra, la miscela esplosiva, che lo hanno portato alla visione definitiva, alla “creazione”. Perché di questo concretamente si tratta: di una Creazione. Picasso disse che dopo la scoperta di Altamira, l’arte non aveva inventato niente di nuovo. Si sbagliava, aveva dimenticato Mondrian.

Dentro ogni composizione, quindi, c’è condensato tutto questo, tutto il conosciuto, tutto il reale, tutto il creato. Solo se si osserva Mondrian con questa chiave di lettura, è possibile “vedere” e “riconoscere” il “tutto”.

Con questa attitudine mi sono accostato al suo lavoro, ho cercato di mettermi a nudo, scrollandomi di dosso anche quel poco che conoscevo dell’arte, per fare spazio a questa dimensione ed assorbirne la pura essenza, al punto tale che alla fine, paradossalmente, ho potuto vedere in Mondrian un “realista”. Capisco che possa suonare come una bestemmia, ma in fondo di questo si tratta. Se ti cali nel suo spirito, vedi tutto quello che di reale lui ha sintetizzato e concentrato in linee e piani di colori primari. Del resto questa è stata la sua “evoluzione di uomo” ancor prima che artista: partito dal Realismo, per approdare al Neoplasticismo.

Per me questo percorso è devastante, genera uno sdoppiamento che mi distrugge. Ho la mia arte, le mie visioni. Quindi è come uscire da un corpo per entrare in un altro.

Questo non accade con frequenza giornaliera, sarebbe impossibile. Probabilmente è il motivo principale per cui il progetto Inside Mondrian avanza lentamente. Devo aspettare che avvenga questa “migrazione” e, quando accade, non riesco a fermarmi. Poi passa e torno nel mio mondo nelle mie visioni, che forse, ad osservarle bene, hanno una sottopelle che appartiene a quell’altra dimensione.

Quindi il secondo principio, è appunto quello di “entrare” nelle opere di Mondrian, cercando la “realtà”, quella “terza dimensione” che è stata astratta, per restituirla sotto forma di altre opere, che siano di pittura, sculture, design, installazioni o composizioni architettoniche. Concettualmente si definisce, appunto, come “trasposizione materica di una visione astratta”.

The Inside Mondriaan Project Towards the end of 2012, I started working on the “Inside Mondriaan Project”.

Can define it a “collateral” work to what I carry on with my own artistic production. It only stems from the particular passion I have for Mondrian. Passion that led me to study him, analyze him and then experiment with possible elaborations, to be applied in various fields: Painting, Sculpture, Design, Installations and Architecture. Obviously nothing new in all this and certainly does not make me a “expert” of Mondrian. Already others have used his works in many areas, but in most cases limited himself to reproduce his works on surfaces of various kinds.

I therefore tried to give a “different cutting” to the Inside Mondriaan Project, following a creative process inspired immediately by ideas of a more conceptual and experimental nature, which had as their ultimate goal the “third dimension”.

Unfortunately, having scarce resources, still appears an “unfinished” work and with many projects started yet to be developed. And being a job that I carry on exclusively as a personal study and research activity, inevitably times are dilated.

Light side

What I have called “different cutting” is based on two fundamental principles.

The first is of a more technical nature.

The basis of every elaboration and experimental application are, in fact, the works of Mondrian.

These have a precise design, they have a precise composition of lines and colored planes. And this setting must not undergo the slightest movement. It should not be changed in any way, it must preserve its “perfect harmony”.

So, before starting to experiment with the different applications, I perform a careful reconstruction of the work. The design obtained becomes the rigid and immovable scheme on which I work.

With these basics I have developed thousands of other drawings and images, with solutions that simulate the third dimension. All the material produced is a database that I use to experiment with the various applications in other artistic, creative and architectural fields. The result is that every work produced, depicts “always” the original work of Mondrian.

The second principle is of a more conceptual nature.

Although there are many who consider Mondrian’s art to be something “simple” or even “childish”, it is actually one of the most complex and difficult to understand art forms that has ever existed.

What we must consider is that “his abstraction” has been literally “created”. There was no form of art that expressed itself in this key. All artistic currents, including the Cubist, Surrealist, Futurist, or any other that gives a different vision of reality, are based on a “figuration”. I mean that any subject is represented, in different forms and scenarios altered in every possible solution, is always somehow “recognizable”.

Take for example Picasso, or any other exponent of these artistic currents. Great genius and certainly an artist who made history, which I take as an example only to express a concept.

As much as Picasso turns any real element into a cubist decomposition, returning his vision and leaving you the task of codifying it, you can always “recognize”, or in any case identify, which subject it is. Whether it’s a portrait, a landscape, a horse, and so on. In short, what I want to say, not to diminish the work of other great artists, but in everything that was represented, the novelty was in the “different vision” of reality, which remained always perceptible. Something new, that was truly “non-existent” and never worked out, was not yet born.

Dark side

So the Abstractionism, not only of Mondrian, but also of many other artists, in those years has fallen like an “atomic bomb”, breaking up everything that was known of art. Today we all know abstract art, so we evaluate it, appreciate it or despise it, but we must to get into the reality of that time when it did not exist.

Here, as if it were a magic, the “Neoplasticism” appears, the “New Man” is born, a vision is created that goes beyond, which summarizes reality, to return it in an “unrecognizable” key. To decode it, it is necessary to travel to another dimension.

Mondrian’s entire artistic career, passed through various currents, combined with all his life experiences, were nothing more than the preparation, the gym, the explosive mixture, which led him to the final vision, to the “creation”. Because of this concretely it is: of a Creation. Picasso said that after the discovery of Altamira, art had not invented anything new. He was wrong, he had forgotten Mondrian.

Within every composition, therefore, all this is condensed, all the known, all the real, all of creation. Only if one observes Mondrian with this interpretation is it possible to “see” and “recognize” the “whole”.

With this attitude I approached his work, I tried to get naked, shaking off even the little I knew about art, to make room for this dimension and absorb the pure essence, to the point that in the end, paradoxically, I could see Mondrian as a “realist”. I understand that it may sound like a blasphemy, but at the bottom of this it is. If you drop in his spirit, see everything he has synthesized and concentrated in lines and planes of primary colors. Moreover, this was his “evolution of man” even before an artist: he started from Realism, to arrive at Neoplasticism.

For me this path is devastating, generates a split that destroys me. I have my art, my visions. So it’s like going out of one body to get into another.

This does not happen with daily frequency, it would be impossible. It is probably the main reason why the Inside Mondrian project moves slowly. I have to wait for this “migration” to happen and, when it happens, I can not stop myself. Then it passes and I return in my world in my visions, that perhaps, to observe them well, have a sub-skin that belongs to that other dimension.

So the second principle, is precisely that of “entering” in the works of Mondrian, looking for the “reality”, that “third dimension” that has been abstract, to return it in the form of other works, which are of painting, sculptures, design, installations or architectural compositions. Conceptually it defines itself as “material transposition of an abstract vision”.

Pittura In questo processo creativo, si inserisce poi, quello che in ambito pittorico è il tema a me più caro, le “Distorsioni”.

Si tratta sempre di una sperimentazione, per analizzare gli effetti che produce la rappresentazione della stessa opera originale di Mondrian, in chiave di “altro-plasticismo”.

Questa formula di “altro-plasticismo” si basa sulla negazione della “linea retta”, trasformando il disegno geometrico e ortogonale, in linee curve e sinuose che si accostano di più alla realtà e allo spazio, dove anche i piani di colore, per effetto della distorsione del disegno complessivo, si deformano.

Questa variazione sperimentale produce l’effetto che definisco di “alterazione armonica”. Così come accade in chiave musicale: Il Jazz, il Boogie Woogie, il Foxtrot, tanto amati da Mondrian, sono generi nei quali si possono incontrare spesso ritmi sincopati, arabeschi e, appunto, “distorsioni”.

In un certo senso è come se un’opera di Mondrian diventasse una chitarra, suonata in generi quali il Blues, il Rock’n’roll o il Noise Sperimentale. L’uso di un “distorsore”, evoluzione dell’overdrive, produce comunque effetti sonori “musicali”, intendendo per musicali, effetti sonori armonici. Basti pensare, per esempio, a Keith Richards con i Rolling Stones, o altri gruppi appartenenti alla “British invasion” tipo gli Yardbirds, fino a Chuk Barry, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, solo per citarne alcuni. Nelle loro composizioni musicali, il “distorsore” è l’elemento chiave che fornisce quella particolare sonorità che le ha rese celebri.

L’opera di Mondrian subisce così una “variazione” a causa del suo passaggio attraverso un “componente fisico non lineare”.

Il medesimo risultato si ottiene anche se vista come una “contro-distorsione”, cioè riportare la superficie terrestre che Mondrian ha rappresentato su una mappa piana, su un piano che ne asseconda il suo reale aspetto curvilineo.

Painting In this creative process is inserted, then, what in the pictorial field is the theme dear to me, the “Distortions”.

It is always an experimentation, to analyze the effects that the representation of the same original work of Mondrian produces, in key of “other-plasticism”.

This formula of “other-plasticism” is based on the negation of the “straight line”, transforming the geometric and orthogonal design, in curved and sinuous lines that are closer to reality and space, where even the color plans, by effect of the distortion of the overall design, they deform.

This experimental variation produces the effect that I define as “harmonic alteration”.

As it happens in a musical key: the Jazz, the Boogie Woogie, the Foxtrot, much loved by Mondrian, are genres in which you can often meet syncopated rhythms, arabesques and, in fact, “distortions”.

In a sense it is as if a work by Mondrian became a guitar, played in genres such as Blues, Rock’n’roll or Experimental Noise. The use of a “distortion”, an evolution of the overdrive, still produces “musical” sound effects, meaning for musical, harmonic sound effects. Just think, for example, to Keith Richards with the Rolling Stones, or other groups belonging to the “British invasion” like the Yardbirds, up to Chuk Barry, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, just to name a few. In their musical compositions, the “distortion” is the key element that provides that particular sonority that made them famous.

Mondrian’s work thus undergoes a “variation” due to its passage through a “non-linear physical component”.

The same result is obtained even if seen as a “counter-distortion”, that is to say, to bring back the terrestrial surface that Mondrian has represented on a flat map, on a plane that complies with its real curvilinear appearance.

Architettura La sperimentale applicazione di ogni elaborazione nell’ambito della Pittura, Scultura, Design e Installazioni, trova il suo naturale compimento nell’Architettura. Naturale ed inevitabile, vista la mia passata esperienza di vita.

Qui la sperimentazione si fa più complicata, perché non sono più solo le opere di Mondrian ad entrare nel processo creativo, ma anche il linguaggio architettonico che deve fondersi in una grammatica compositiva che generi equilibrio. Fatta di spazi, forme, volumi, luce e ambiente nel quale si colloca. I fattori in campo sono molti.

In questo caso trovo aiuto nell’accostare Mondrian, ad un grande Architetto (che considero Artista), Richard Meier.

Lo definisco il mio “padre spirituale”, da lui ho ricevuto, nella mia passata vita, i cromosomi formativi e indelebili.

In questo linguaggio architettonico mi muovo per sperimentare le diverse soluzioni. Alcuni progetti sono terminati almeno a livello di massima, altri, e sono molti, li ho elaborati a livello preliminare e spero di riuscire a completarli.

Preso, poi, da una sorta di “delirio creativo”, ho voluto sperimentare l’applicazione della stessa filosofia, basandomi anche sulle opere di altri artisti.

Una di questi, ad esempio, è la Svedese Hilma Af Klint. Altra pioniera dell’astrattismo per la quale ho immaginato un museo a lei dedicato e ne ho eseguito il progetto utilizzando una sua opera come immagine ed elemento centrale della composizione (pag. 188).

Altri, sono la coppia Joseph e Anni Albers. Utilizzando alcuni loro disegni, ho iniziato un progetto molto impegnativo che spero di portare a termine.

Per ora è solo in bozza, anche se ho già tutto definito (pag. 189) In ogni caso, il principio basilare non cambia, così come non cambia il linguaggio architettonico.

Ognuno di questi progetti, poi, provo ad immaginarli in luoghi ben definiti, per rendere la sperimentazione il più attinente possibile con la realtà e per darne un senso compiuto di fattibilità. Ad esempio: “The Monolith – BigBiside” in Place de la Concorde a Parigi (pag.193); “The Monolith – BigBiside” sulla Roosevelt Island a New York (pag. 184); “Vulcano House” sull’isola di Vulcano in Sicilia (pag. 183); “Hilma Af Klint Museum” a Stoccolma (pag. 188); una Installazione per il “Fourth Plinth” in Trafalgar Square a Londra (pag. 191).

Architecture The experimental application of every elaboration in the field of Painting, Sculpture, Design and Installations, finds its natural fulfillment in architecture. Natural and inevitable, given my past life experience.

Here the experimentation becomes more complicated, because it is no longer just Mondrian’s works that enter the creative process, but also the architectural language that must merge into a compositional grammar that generates balance. Made of spaces, shapes, volumes, light and environment in which it is located. There are many factors in the field.

In this case I find help in approaching Mondrian, a great architect (that I consider an artist), Richard Meier.

I define him as my “spiritual father”, from whom I received, in my past life, formative and indelible chromosomes.

In this architectural language I move to experiment with different solutions. Some projects are finished at least at the rough level, others, and there are many, I have elaborated them at the preliminary level and I hope to be able to complete them.

Then, I took a kind of “creative delirium”, I wanted to experiment with the application of the same philosophy, also based on the works of other artists.

One of these, for example, is the Swedish Hilma Af Klint. Another pioneer of abstractionism for which I imagined a museum dedicated to her and I executed the project using one of her works as an image and central element of the composition (pag. 188).

Others, are the couple Joseph and Anni Albers. Using some of their designs, I started a very challenging project that I hope to complete. For now it is only in draft, although I have already defined everything (pag. 189).

In any case, the basic principle does not change, just as the architectural language does not change.

Each of these projects, then, I try to imagine them in well-defined places, to make the experimentation as relevant as possible with reality and to give it a complete sense of feasibility. For example: “The Monolith - BigBiside” on the Place de la Concorde in Paris (pag. 193); “The Monolith - BigBiside” on Roosevelt Island in New York (pag. 184); “Vulcano House” on the island of Vulcano in Sicily (pag. 185); “Hilma Af Klint Museum” in Stockholm (pag. 188); an installation for the “Fourth Plinth” in Trafalgar Square in London (pag. 191).

Others are placed in imaginary places: “Biside Building” (pag. 182); “Sculpture House” (pag. 183); “House for Artist (or Architect)”; “Twin Monoliths with Josef and Anni Albers” (pag. 189).

Sculptures, Design and Installations

Molti altri progetti, poi, sono stati pensati per Sculture, Design e Installazioni. Alcuni realizzati, altri iniziati e da completare. Questi rappresentano il percorso transitorio, formativo, di un viaggio che parte dalla Pittura, per approdare all’Architettura. Anche se sono settori di sperimentazione nei quali studiare forme e soluzioni che poi diventano un punto di riferimento per elaborare composizioni architettoniche, questi si concretizzano, comunque, in vere e proprie opere.

Ciò che in ambito bidimensionale, che sia pittorico o di sola elaborazione grafica, è stato studiato come simulazione tridimensionale, diventa l’immagine centrale intorno alla quale si articolano le varie composizioni. In pratica è come se quanto rappresentato sulla tela, venisse “tirato”, “estruso”, per trasformarsi in materia. Quello che accade ad esempio nelle opere di Agostino Bonalumi con le “estroflessioni”.

Questa filosofia concettuale, con il Progetto Inside Mondriaan, si materializza. La tela estroflessa si stacca dalla parete e si trasforma in legno, marmo, ferro, cemento, per diventare scultura, sedia, libreria, installazione ed infine edificio. E tutto inizia da un dipinto di Mondrian.

Due famose opere, “Place de la Condorde” e “Trafalgar Square”, si trasformano prima in sculture in marmo, poi le dimensioni aumentano e diventano Monoliti: installazioni in acciaio. Infine crescono ancora e diventano un edificio: architettura.

A pag. 192/193, un esempio di questo processo evolutivo Oppure, “Composition in Black and White with Double Lines” (pag.

176), “Composition n.I with Red” (pag. 191) e “Large Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow” (in queste pagine), diventano sedie in legno e acciaio. E anche “Composition with Yellow, Blue, Black, Red and Grey”, si trasforma in una grande parete-libreria bifronte (pag. 178/179).

Ed ancora, un’altra famosa opera, “New York City”, si materializza in un gigantesco Monolite, per assumere i connotati di un edificio alto 70 metri sulla Roosevelt Island appunto a New York (pag. 184).

Sono solo alcuni esempi, applicabili, volendo, a tutte le opere di Mondrian.

Many other projects, then, were designed for Sculptures, Design and Installations. Some made, others started and to be completed.

These represent the transitory, formative journey of a trip that starts from Painting, to arrive at the Architecture. Although they are areas of experimentation in which to study forms and solutions that then become a point of reference for elaborating architectural compositions, these are realized, however, in real works.

What has been studied as a three-dimensional simulation in the twodimensional area, which is pictorial or graphic, is the central image around which the various compositions are organized. In practice it is as if what is represented on the canvas, was “pulled”, “extruded”, to turn into matter. That happens for example in the works of Agostino Bonalumi with the “extroflexions”.

This conceptual philosophy, with the Inside Mondriaan Project, materializes. The extroflexed canvas comes off the wall and turns into wood, marble, iron, cement, to become a sculpture, a chair, a bookcase, an installation and finally a building. And it all starts with a painting by Mondrian.

Two famous works, “Place de la Condorde” and “Trafalgar Square”, are transformed first into marble sculptures, then the dimensions increase and become Monoliths: steel installations. Finally they grow again and become a building: architecture.

On pag. 192/193, an example of this evolutionary process.

Or, “Composition in Black and White with Double Lines” (pag. 176), “Composition n.I with Red” (pag. 191) and “Large Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow” (in these pages), become wooden and steel chairs. And also “Composition with Yellow, Blue, Black, Red and Gray”, turns into a large double-sided bookshelf (pag. 178/179).

And yet, another famous work, “New York City”, materializes in a gigantic Monolith, to take on the characteristics of a 70-meter-tall building on Roosevelt Island, in fact, in New York (pag. 184).

These are just some examples, applicable, if desired, to all the works of Mondrian.

Tra le Installazioni, quella che senza dubbio ha avuto maggiori “attenzioni” è il “Monolite Place de la Concorde”, meglio conosciuto come il “Monolite del Circo Massimo”.

In questo caso il lavoro sperimentale non è stata la realizzazione dell’opera in se. Si, certo, si configura nell’ambito del Progetto Inside Mondrian e quindi non va vista come elemento isolato, ma l’ho utilizzata per sperimentare un’altra formula, quella “dell’occupazione” di uno spazio con una “presenza/assenza”. La materializzazione silenziosa di un oggetto ingombrante, seduto ad osservare una Città indifferente, una Città spenta, una Città allo sbando, piegata su se stessa in una parvenza di finto benessere.

L’intenzione era proprio quella di “testare” l’attenzione di una Città come Roma, delle sue Istituzioni e del Popolo. Per dimostrare che era una Città in stato di abbandono e degrado fisico, ideologico e sociale. Oltre al fatto che viveva nel totale immobilismo e assenza di iniziative concrete per l’arte in generale (siamo a cavallo tra il 2013 e il 2014 e le cronache dei tempi successivi, lo hanno pienamente dimostrato).

La vera “Opera d’Arte” non fu il Monolite in se. L’installazione era solo il pretesto, lo strumento, per compiere una vera e propria Performance e dimostrare che a Roma potevi veramente fare di tutto.

Collocare un’opera di quelle dimensioni, nel punto più importante e visibile della Città e constatare che per oltre due mesi nessuno si è accorto di nulla, è stata senza dubbio “un’Azione” senza precedenti.

Questa è la “vera Opera d’Arte”.

Terminata la performance con la mia autodenuncia, quella che per tutta la Città era una “assenza”, è diventata una “presenza ingombrante” e chi ha osservato solo il Monolite, non è riuscito a vedere al di là del proprio naso, non ha visto o non ha voluto vedere, una “Città in rovina” che gli faceva da piedistallo. Non a caso ho scelto una delle aree archeologiche più importanti del Mondo. Le “rovine” storiche che facevano da cornice al Monolite, si contrapponevano alle “rovine ideologiche e sociali” dell’intera Città.

Among the installations, the one that undoubtedly had the greatest “attention” is the “Monolite Place de la Concorde”, better known as the “Monolith of the Circus Maximus”.

In this case the experimental work was not the realization of the work itself. Yes, of course, it is part of the Inside Mondrian Project and therefore should not be seen as an isolated element, but I used it to experiment with another formula, that of “occupation” of a space with a “presence/absence” . The silent materialization of a cumbersome object, seated to observe an indifferent City, a dull City, a City in disarray, bent over itself in a semblance of fake well-being.

The intention was precisely to “test” the attention of a city like Rome, its Institutions and its People. To prove that it was a city in a state of neglect and physical, ideological and social degradation. In addition to the fact that he lived in total immobility and lack of concrete initiatives for art in general (we are at the turn between 2013 and 2014 and the chronicles of later times, they have fully demonstrated).

The real “Art Work” was not the Monolith itself. The installation was just the pretext, the instrument, to perform a real Performance and show that in Rome you could really do everything. Placing a work of that size, in the most important and visible part of the City and noting that for over two months nobody has noticed anything, has undoubtedly been an unprecedented “Action”. This is the “true Art Work”.

After stop the Performance with my auto-complaint, the one that for the whole city was an “absence”, has become a “cumbersome presence” and who has observed only the Monolith, has not been able to see beyond his nose, has not seen or did not want to see, a “Ruined City” that served as a pedestal. It is no coincidence that I have chosen one of the most important archaeological areas in the world. The historical “ruins” that used to frame the Monolith were opposed to the “ideological and social ruins” of the entire city.
