Vulnerability to cyberattacks, theft, and other threats is as much a personal concern as it is one of national and global security. Ensuring the secure and reliable exchange of information is a critical task and one that the scientific community has been engaged in since the rise of new technologies.

This two-day symposium will bring together leading French and American scientists in the field to identify current challenges and to share the results of their research, with the prospect of developing new scientific partnerships between the United States and France. Featuring a keynote address by Dr. Joseph Sifakis, 2007 Turing Award laureate, discussions will focus on privacy and data protection, cryptology and system security, formal methods for security, and the education and training of tomorrow’s cybersecurity scientists. In addition, industry leaders, representatives from innovative startups, and policy researchers will tackle current technology transfer and innovation challenges in this field during a roundtable discussion.

This two-day scientific workshop will focus on clinical challenges in coronary and aortic diseases, exploring current advanced tools of numerical modeling in computational mechanics for cardiovascular diseases, and discussing quantitative patient-specific analysis. French and American researchers in mathematical modeling and physicians will present their latest results and exchange on current developments in the field. The objective of this event is to foster new opportunities for scientific collaborations between France and the U.S. Southeast.

SCIENCE

Mathematicians and computer scientists have been working closely with physicians to improve the comprehension of heart diseases, helping design new therapies and devices, and ultimately enhancing the decision-making process in cardiovascular healthcare.

Presented in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Emory University, the Emory University Hospital, and the Office for Science & Technology of the French Embassy.

For 40 years Atlanta, Georgia and Toulouse, France have been sister cities.

To celebrate this relationship the two cities announced the 2016 Atlanta -Toulouse Startup Exchange.

BUSINESS

Toulouse is the home of Aerospace Valley, European capital of aeronautical engineering, the global headquarters for Airbus, and the location of multiple satellite research programs. The city also boasts the only French tech cluster devoted to cancer research and treatment.

Atlanta is the business center of the southeast and the location of the world’s most travelled and efficient airport. The city has the 3rd highest concentration of Fortune 500s in the nation, with companies such as Coca-Cola, Delta, and CNN, and is the leading city for the technology, bioscience, health, IT, cleantech, supply chain, and automotive industries.

From October 3rd-October 15th two Atlanta startups will travel to France where they will be connected with Toulouse’s startup events, gain access to European decision makers, and engage with investors and business leaders in their respective sectors.

From October 31st-November 11th Atlanta will welcome two startups from Toulouse to live, work, and learn. Selected startups will stay in the heart of the city and enjoy a two-week residency at a local accelerator dedicated to their industry, gaining exposure to the U.S. market and Atlanta’s vibrant startup culture.

Join award-winning press cartoonists Jean “Plantu” Plantureaux (France), Mike Luckovich (USA) and Michel “Kichka” (Israel/Belgium) for a fun, engaging, and provocative reflection of free speech in a democratic society.

Through their use of satire and irony, press cartoonists raise questions about democracy, freedom of expression, and the power – and limits – of humor.

Creating a space for dialogue, reflection, and tolerance, this idea is at the core of Cartooning for Peace, an international network of more than 140 committed press cartoonists, who fight with humor for the respect of cultures and freedoms.

“The Art of Democracy,” an outdoor exhibition of the cartoonists’ work, will be on display as part of ELEVATE, an arts initiative of the City of Atlanta – Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

Presented in partnership with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, the Atlanta Press Club, Atlanta International School, Francophonie Atlanta and the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies at Georgia Tech with the support of the Raymond F. At 29, Noé Soulier is considered one of the most innovative contemporary artists in his field. Both a dancer and a choreographer, he has already showcased his work all around Europe, from the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, to London and Vienna. Recently appointed Associated Artist of the Centre de Développement Chorégraphique in Toulouse, France, Noé Soulier is coming to Atlanta for a much-anticipated U.S. debut..

In Removing, Noé Soulier seeks to explore actions motivated by a practical purpose such as hitting, avoiding or reaching. Unlike movements determined geometrically or mechanically, dancers share a vocabulary of gestures with the audience. The result is a fascinating composition interlaced with organized solos and duos.

Sonic Generator and gloATL bring to life a new ballet by Paris-born composer Daniel Wohl.

CULTURE

Daniel Wohl is known to create provocative and imaginative pieces, blending electronic music with acoustic instrumentation. In a few short years, this promising young musician has collaborated with prestigious ensembles, orchestras, filmmakers and notable visual and electronic artists.

Commissioned by Sonic Generator, the contemporary music ensemble-inresidence at Georgia Tech and gloATL, two of the major contributors to the Atlanta contemporary art scene, “Cycles” is a multi-sensory experience which incorporates an improbable but dazzling combination of sounds. After a preview performance by Sonic Generator and Orchestre National de Lorraine (ONL) in France in 2014, this full-length ballet is premiering in the US during France-Atlanta 2016.

After a special report published in the journal Nature announced the possible extinction of part of mankind before the end of the 21st century, co-directors Cyril Dion and Mélanie Laurent, together with a team of four people, carried out an investigation in ten different countries to figure out what may lead to this disaster and above all how to avoid it.

HUMANITARIAN

This forum will bring together humanitarian, development, and health experts from France and the US to discuss the present state of mental health and psychosocial care within the framework of relief and development programming.

As the humanitarian aid community addresses today’s global crises, mental health is an important, yet often overlooked, need that is relevant in all phases of emergency and development assistance. This forum will provide an opportunity to reflect on current mental health challenges and practices in the context of disaster preparedness, capacity building, and social reconstruction as well as the mental health and wellness of aid workers. The discussion will aim to enhance public awareness of mental health issues in global emergencies, while also pointing towards impact-oriented, culturally sensitive approaches to prevention and care.

Presented in partnership with Emory University’s Center for Humanitarian Emergencies at Rollins School of Public Health and Laney Graduate School’s Master’s in Development Practice.

For this education series, students learning French in Metro Atlanta high schools and universities will have the opportunity to hear from local NGO representatives as they discuss their field experiences, global humanitarian affairs, and new ways to use the French language in a professional setting.

With over 220 million French speakers worldwide on the 5 continents, French is used as an official language in 32 different countries and governments, and is ranked the sixth most widely spoken language. It is, therefore, not surprising that international agencies and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) rely heavily on employees who speak French.
