THE IMPACT OF BIODIVERSITY ON HUMAN HEALTH Human and planetary health are linked to biodiversity in ways that are not always clear or appreciated by the public. Taking the ethnobotanical approach, an interdisciplinary team of scientists is collaborating to demonstrate that translational science is geared towards the improvement of human health. Chaired by Cassandra Quave, Assistant Professor and Herbarium Curator at Emory University, the symposium is organized into four interactive sessions with discussions between international keynote leaders from France and the United States. These discussions will be followed by interactive Q&A sessions that will provide an opportunity to engage with faculty as they share their perspectives and personal experiences.
This event is co-organized by the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States and Emory University. October 17, 8:35 A.M. - 1:15 P.M. EMORY UNIVERSITY COX BALLROOM: 569 ASBURY CIR REGISTER AT FRANCE-ATLANTA.ORG

THE ROLE OF BIODIVERSITY IN DISEASE, ECOLOGY AND PLANETARY HEALTH Globally, three-quarters of all emerging diseases are zoonotic in origin and represent an increasing burden on the health and well-being of humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. Key human behaviors, wildlife behaviors, ecological conditions, and landscape features increase the risks of interspecific disease transmission. The impact of anthropogenic changes place people and wildlife in ecosystems at increased risk of pathogen exchange. Chaired by Thomas Gillespie, Associate Professor at Emory University, the symposium is organized into four interactive sessions with discussions between international keynote leaders from France and the United States on diverse issues linked to the topic of biodiversity. These discussions will be followed by an interactive Q&A session that will provide an opportunity to engage with faculty as they share their perspectives and personal experiences. MUSIC & TECHNOLOGY | Loïc Guénin
A composer’s residency in Atlanta Loïc Guénin, a French composer known for his unique soundscapes and graphical scores, will write a new piece of music inspired by the sounds of the city of Atlanta. It will be produced by his company, Le Phare à Lucioles, and performed in France in 2020. Hovering between experimental rock noise with contemporary aesthetics and an electro-acoustic sound, Loïc Guénin’s music refuses to adhere to a specific category. His approach to sound and listening places him at the border between music and contemporary art. During his residency in Atlanta, Loïc Guénin will present a series of lectures. He will also lead workshops and performances with Georgia Tech students along with a Pittsburgh, Atlanta group and the local, national, and international artists of The Fence. This event is co-organized by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States and the Georgia Tech School of Music, with the support of the FACE Foundation, Spedidam, Sacem, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs - Atlanta, and Le Phare à Lucioles, in collaboration with Dad’s Garage and Fire House. WELCOME TO EREWHON | A contemporary fable about living beings and machines
A series of films in the presence of Gwenola Wagon & Pierre Cassou-Noguès Pierre Cassou-Noguès, philosopher and professor at the University of Paris 8, and Gwenola Wagon, artist and assistant professor at the University of Paris 8, will introduce the project Welcome to Erewhon, co-directed with the artist and researcher Stéphane Degoutin. Welcome to Erewhon is a loose adaptation of a philosophical fable published in 1872 by the British writer Samuel Butler. In the fictional city of Erewhon, automation is considered to be an evolution of the “machine” species that is comparable to the evolution of biological species, but at a faster pace. This hypothesis governs the inhabitants and their habits, down to the smallest aspects of their lives. Humans, animals, and plants are linked in a cloud that processes all mental matter. Algorithms can give voice to the dead. This is how the spirit of Samuel Butler can still circulate through the images of the city. Pierre Cassou-Noguès is the author of several books which combine philosophy and fiction such as Les Rêves cybernétiques de Norbert Wiener (Seuil, 2014). His latest book Technofictions (Cerf, 2019) investigates through eight short stories the various ways in which technology currently transforms our forms of life. Gwenola Wagon has produced numerous sound and moving image installations in France and abroad including Globodrome, Cyborgs dans la brume and World Brain, co-directed with Stéphane Degoutin. They will introduce their next project on climate change during the European Climate Diplomacy Week on September 27 at the Georgia Institute of Technology. This event is co-organized by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States and the Georgia Tech Office of the Arts. Production: Irrévérence Films / Jeu de Paume espace virtuel, with the support of CNC Dicréam, Artec, ANR, Laboratoire TEAMeD, and Université Paris 8. SEPTEMBER 26, 7:00 P.M. - 8:30 P.M. MATTERS: NOW THE TECHNOSPHERE
Theater research residency | Duncan Evennou and Clémence Hallé The French performer and artistic director Duncan Evennou and the researcher Clémence Hallé will present the first step of the trilogy Matters and their new research axes. The first performance was an exploration of the archives of the inaugural meeting of the Anthropocene Working Group in 2014 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. The second performance will be an exploration of the relationship between humans and technology and the dominant story used to explain why we enter the Anthropocene. The last performance will treat the alternative stories told by the studies of post-colonialism and gender. Duncan Evennou graduated in 2012 from the Ecole nationale supérieure d’art dramatique of the Théâtre national de Bretagne and completed the Political Arts Experimentation Program (SPEAP) at the Institut d’etudes politiques de Paris. He is now working on creation, research and pedagogy dynamics at the crossing point of drama, sociology and visual arts. Clémence Hallé is a doctoral student at the École normale supérieure in the Sciences, Arts, Creation, Research Department. Her thesis is about the aesthetic history of the Antropocene. This residency is organized by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States. RESIDENCY: OCTOBER 21 - NOVEMBER 15 FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT FRANCE-ATLANTA.ORG.

SPECIAL EVENING: FILM SCREENINGS
Eléonore Weber & Patricia Allio The films, Night Replay, produced in 2012 by the French author and filmmaker Eléonore Weber, and Reconstitution of a Hunting Scene, produced in 2019 by the French artist and author Patricia Allio, are two documentaries at the intersection between fiction and reality that reconstruct a role-play. These films, which have been presented at various festivals in France and abroad (Belfort Film Festival, Hors Pistes - Centre Pompidou in Paris, CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, and IMDb in Montreal), have never before been presented in the United States. Night Replay (France, 85 min.): Every Saturday evening, in a Mexican village located 1,500 kilometers from the U.S. border, tourists are offered a unique experience, a roleplay imagined by the villagers: Caminata nocturna. The tourists play the role of illegal migrants and the villagers play the role of smugglers, drug traffickers and border police agents. This curious tourist activity, which inspired Eléonore Weber and Patricia Allio’s theatrical creation in France, is at the center of this documentary film. Reconstruction of a Hunting Scene (France, 35 min.): For 40 years, the French artist and writer Catherine Robbe-Grillet - as the dominatrix persona Jeanne De Berg - has organized mysterious women’s ceremonies. This documentary film explores one of the most peculiar and extraordinary ceremonies, the hunt. Far from a stereotypical conception of BDSM, the film presents the dialectical complexity of a nonstandard relationship of desire. This event is co-organized by the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States and the Plaza Theatre. SCREENINGS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE FILMMAKERS: NOVEMBER 14, 7:30 P.M. SPECIAL EVENT | THE ICONIC IMAGES OF HENRI DAUMAN
Photography exhibition of Henri Dauman The Breman Museum presents Henri Dauman: Looking Up. Iconic Photography that Defined the 20th Century. This exhibition is on display through December 30, 2019. Henri Dauman’s photography documents some of the most important events and personalities of the 20th century, from the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, to Buddhist priests in Vietnam and the Castro revolution. His images capture the American experience during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. This Holocaust survivor and self-taught photographer produced iconic images for the covers of TIME magazine, LIFE magazine, and various other publications. Born in France, Dauman was only 9 when his father was taken by the Nazis to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he died that same year. Dauman and his mother escaped and hid for several years. At 17, his uncle invited him to New York City. “He asked if I wanted to come and live in the United States, and I said, ‘Sure.’ I had been dreaming of New York, seeing it in the movies and photographs. It’s such a photographic city. It’s like a big movie set.” Dauman’s photographs were recently featured in Paris and at the KP Projects Gallery in Los Angeles. The Breman Museum, a preeminent cultural center in the Southeast, connects people of all backgrounds in understanding and appreciation of Jewish history, culture and arts. Its Midtown Atlanta location hosts a special, permanent Holocaust exhibition highlighting the resilience of local survivors, plus comprehensive archives on southern Jewish history, the most extensive of its kind. This event is organized by the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum (curator, Susanne Katz), Henri Dauman, and the KP Projects Gallery, in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States. HUMANITARIAN FORUM
Humanitarian logistics and supply chain management in emergencies Logistics and supply chain management remains an often overlooked but crucial aspect of our daily lives. In emergencies, programs and service delivery are only possible if the right product gets to the right people at the right place and at the right time. Due to natural disasters, famine, disease and other ongoing problems across the globe, the need for resilient and strengthened supply chains is becoming increasingly recognized. The Consulate General of France in Atlanta and Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health will host a one-day forum uniting French and American NGOs and health experts. Over the course of two panel discussions, experts will touch on medical commodities, the use of pre-packed kits and the opportunity for collaboration between corporations and humanitarian organizations. They will also explore the connection between Atlanta-based programming and organizations with global humanitarian logistics programming.
The forum is co-organized by the Consulate General of France in Atlanta and Emory University’s Center for Humanitarian Emergencies and Institute for Developing Nations, with the participation this year of the Georgia Tech Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems.
