WHERE: Georgia Tech Global Learning Center, Georgia Institute of Technology (84 5th St. NW, Atlanta, GA 30308) This workshop will bring together French and American experts working on different parts of the continuum between technology innovation and economic development to share best practices and lessons learned, as well as explore barriers and opportunities in a global context.

Workshop on State-of-the-art Translational Research in Biomedical Disciplines WHEN: October 23 and 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

WHERE: Joseph W. Jones Room, Woodruff Library, Emory University, (540 Asbury Circle, Atlanta, GA 30322) This workshop is not open to the public.

Translational research means crossing barriers and compartment walls. It also exists as a concept to be tackled in itself to finally ensure a real continuum from lab discoveries to health medical application: “from bench to bedside.” Based on a partnership between France, (with the participation of INSERM) Atlanta translational centers and especially Emory’s Winship Institute, this workshop will focus on identifying the best strategies to optimize translational processes and relative capacity building. On this occasion, decision makers will also elaborate on a 4-year cooperation agreement between the two countries based on scientific excellence criteria to fight blood diseases and cancers.

Aerospace Engineering and the Life Sciences, Opportunities for the Future WHEN: October 24 and 25 WHERE: The TSRB Auditorium at Georgia Institute of Technology (Technology Square Research Building, 85 Fifth Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30308) This meeting is not open to the public.

Aerospace engineers, scientists, and researchers from France and the Southeastern U.S. will gather together for a series of high-level, targeted meetings. The aerospace enterprise and health sciences have been closely intertwined since the beginning of the aviation era. With the advent of new aerospace paradigms, such as unmanned air vehicles and far-flung extra-terrestrial missions, new opportunities arise. To define the future of the cooperation between aerospace engineering and the life sciences, it is necessary to perform a broad examination of state of the art technology and identify new and clear opportunities for transatlantic collaborations. The aim of this workshop is to provide the opportunity to integrate the different points of view from various communities in order to identify future opportunities at the junction between health sciences and the aerospace enterprise.

US-French Post Graduate Seminar on Nanocharacterization WHEN: October-November WHERE: France Nanocharacterization and nanosensors are relative to nanotechnologies, which are devoted to measurements at the nanoscale (imaging resolution until at atomic and molecule scales).

This workshop will offer American doctoral students the chance to visit the best nanoscale facilities in France through a national competition.

The competition is based on promising technology criteria as well as the potential to lead to new longterm collaborations between our two countries.

Business Workshops Sustainable Airport Area International Seminar WHEN: October 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: The Metro Atlanta Chamber (235 Andrew Young International Blvd N.W., Atlanta, GA 30303) Representatives from the City of Atlanta, HartsfieldJackson International Airport, Invest Atlanta and participants from important airports worldwide will gather for the 3rd Annual SAA International Seminar in Paris, France from October 23-25 to continue discussions with the Hubstart Paris® Alliance on identifying areas for synergistic collaboration within the airport areas which could result in job growth and increased opportunities for bi-lateral investment and trade between Paris and Atlanta. A live broadcast, provided by Arkadin Global Collaboration Services and organized in conjunction with the French American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta will be hosted by the Metro Atlanta Chamber, offering interested participants the opportunity to join in the discussion on “New Economic Opportunities in airport areas: new economic sectors and attractiveness factors.”

France-Atlanta at the Academy of International Business Southeast USA Chapter WHEN: October 25 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

WHERE: Room 201, Scheller College of Business Building , Georgia Institute of Technology (800 West Peachtree Street, NW, Atlanta, GA 30308) Hundreds of scholars, students, and business practitioners will gather for the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Academy of International Business Southeast USA Chapter (AIB-SE) focusing on “Innovation, Institutions and Emerging Markets”.

On this occasion, a roundtable discussion open to the public will be dedicated to the free trade agreement project between the European Union and the United States and its possible impact in the Southeastern U.S.

Invest in France/Invest in Georgia: “Opportunities in Growing Markets— Aerospace and Health Sciences” WHEN: October 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

WHERE: Le Craw Auditorium, Scheller College of Business Building, Georgia Institute of Technology (800 West Peachtree Street., NW, Atlanta, GA 30308) This roundtable discussion, aimed to bridge the gap between various organizations involved in business development activities, will unite French and American professionals and policy makers in order to provide opportunities for investing in France in the growing markets of aerospace and medical sciences and conversely local and regional opportunities in the Southeastern U.S. Discussions will educate the public on the role and function of various organizations involved in foreign trade and investment, their missions, services and assistance they offer to businesses looking to expand beyond their borders.

WHERE: Gordy Room—William C. Wardlaw Building at Georgia Institute of Technology (177 North Avenue N.W., Atlanta, GA 30332) The French American Chamber of Commerce Atlanta will celebrate its 9th annual Crystal Peach Awards Ceremony as part of France-Atlanta 2013.

The Crystal Peach Awards recognize investment and trade between the Southeastern U.S. and France.

This prestigious luncheon will celebrate the ongoing partnership between the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Consulate General of France in Atlanta along with the involvement of the various partnering Franco-American institutions that make France-Atlanta possible.

WHERE: Rialto Center for the Arts (80 Forsyth Street NW, Atlanta, GA 30303) Critically acclaimed actor Jacques Martial brings to the Rialto stage the world-renowned “Cahier d’un retour au pays natal” by Aimé Césaire. This revolutionary work, presented in French with English supertitles, voices the impatience of a young man at odds with himself, on the verge of revolt in the face of insurmountable prejudice, foolishness and violence. The following day, Martial will give a free public lecture on October 25 about the links between culture and place.

Street Performances: Cooperatzia by the G. Bistaki Company

WHEN: October 26 at 8:30 p.m WHERE: Rialto Center at Georgia State, on the corner of Forsyth Street NW and Poplar Street NW (Atlanta, 30303) Bringing contemporary dance to public spaces, Association Manifeste offers a unique opportunity to re-examine what we see and share. The street corner is a unique metaphor for life: what you see and how you see it depends on where you’re standing. Through the unique choreography and stunning visual effects, audiences will bear witness to two spaces at the same time—one virtual, the other tangible: one known, the other recognizable.

Two distinct realities—one French, the other Atlantan—different visions of humanity where men and women continue to dance.

Bistaki Dance Company to take Atlanta on a creative, dreamlike journey that offers a new vision of space and architecture. Dancers build, encounter and interact in this urban public space, inviting audiences to see themselves, their city, and one another with fresh perspective. An allegory of conflict and of non-judgment, the dancers and props offer a message of peace— because even if things shock and break, they continue to dance together in a coherent simplicity.

WHERE: Alliance Française d’Atlanta-Midtown Auditorium (Colony Square, Suite 561 | 1197 Peachtree St. NE. Atlanta, GA 30361) Classically trained as a pianist, French singer Lise Chelma is dazzling audiences across the states on the U.S. tour of her new self-titled album.

Come enjoy the light, airy vocals and virtuoso accompaniment of one of France’s newest music sensations at this one-time concert presented in partnership with the Alliance Française d’Atlanta.

Exhibition: “Putting the Southeast on the Map” from the Private Archive Collections of the French State Department WHEN: October 29- November 30, opening reception on October 29 at 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Stubbins Gallery, College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, (245 4th Street, Atlanta, GA 30332) Presenting a unique selection of 18th and 19th century maps of the Southeastern U.S., this exhibition invites the public to explore the private archives of the French State Department. In conjunction with the exhibition, local artists and students will be paired up with maps from the exhibition to present a contemporary exploration of the antique maps, focusing on time, space, and identity.

French writer, curator, and founder and editor of the prestigious magazine Art Press, Catherine Millet is best known for her memoir The Sexual Life of Catherine M., an international bestseller that has scandalized and intellectually provoked readers around the world. As part of France-Atlanta 2013, Millet will speak to students from the Creative Writing department at SCAD Atlanta about her experiences as a writer and her work in relation to French literature.

Concert: Sonic Generator and the Orchestre National de Lorraine WHEN: November 3 at 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts (349 Ferst Dr NW, Atlanta, GA 30332) Soloists from the Orchestre National de Lorraine (ONL) from Metz, France along with Sonic Generator, the contemporary music ensemble-in-residence at Georgia Tech, will join forces for a contemporary music concert in Atlanta under the direction of ONL’s music director Jacques Mercier and reciprocal concert in Metz, France in February 2014. This exchange is made possible thanks to the generous support of Prélude, Metz, Metz Métropole, Vesperien, Jeunes Talents, Arsenal, Georgia Tech and the French-American Fund for Contemporary Music, a program of FACE with major support from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, SACEM, Institut Francais, the Florence Gould Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

–Artist Talk WHEN: November 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., reception to follow WHERE: SCAD Gallery (1600 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309) SCAD Atlanta presents a solo exhibition by Laurent Grasso. Focused on observation, control and surveillance, Grasso’s film “On Air,” features a falcon fitted with a micro camera that films while flying over United Arab Emirates’ lunar-like landscapes.

This transforms a traditional form of hunting into an archaic spying tool which evokes a living and unidentifiable drone. Grasso’s films, installations and sculptures speculate on the psychological consequences of science and technology and warn us of what may still lie ahead.

Lecture: Political and Cultural Expression in the Public Spaces of Paris (and Atlanta) WHEN: November 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: Reinsch-Pierce Family Auditorium, College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, (245 4th St. N.W., Atlanta, GA 30332) France is renowned for “taking to the streets” in protest. Atlanta has also seen the public space used in demonstrations, particularly during the civil rights movement. Jean-Luc Pinol, professor of contemporary history at the Ecole normale supérieure de Lyon and Joëlle Zask, professor of philosophy at the Université d’Aix-Marseille, will explore questions of space, political and cultural expression in the historical context of French protests before broadening the discussion to include a comparison of Atlanta’s public spaces.

Teacher Training at the High Museum of Art WHEN: November 7 and 9, 2013 WHERE: High Museum of Art (1280 Peachtree Street, N.E., Atlanta, GA 30309) This two-day training offered to middle and high school French teachers in partnership with the High Museum of Art and the Théâtre du Rêve will provide presentations, gallery activities and workshops around the exhibit The Louvre and the Tuileries Garden in conjunction with an original piece by Théâtre du Rêve, which provides a sensory experience of the Tuileries Garden across the centuries.

African Film Series & Conversation with Mahamat-Saleh Haroun WHEN: November 9, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Georgia Pacific (133 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30303) Presented in partnership with the BronzeLens Film Festival and Africa Atlanta, this year’s FranceAtlanta at the BronzeLens will pay tribute to one of the world’s most popular contemporary African filmmakers, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. Following a small retrospective of his work to include Bye Bye Africa (1999), A Screaming Man (2009), and his newest film Grisgris (2013), this two-time Cannes Film Festival competitor will speak about his career, his work, and the future of cinema in his home country, Chad, in a conversation animated by fellow filmmaker Chief Editor and writer for Shadow & Act, Tambay A. Obenson.

–Community Gardens Project WHEN: November 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 pm WHERE: International Rescue Committee (2305 Parklake Drive Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30345) Metro Atlanta is a major hub for refugee resettlement.

With the continued unrest and rebel fighting destabilizing the Republic of Congo, more than 2.4 million Congolese have been internally displaced with approximately 460,000 becoming refugees in neighboring countries since November 2012. In light of these circumstances, Georgia’s refugee services anticipate a sharp increase in the population of French-speaking refugees over the next few years.

To accommodate the needs of these survivors, France-Atlanta, with the support of Africa Atlanta, is hosting a Refugee Resettlement Forum.

Representatives from The International Rescue Committee in Atlanta, Refugee Resettlement & Immigration Services of Atlanta, and Refugee Family Services will share how you can lend both your language skills and time to helping this population rebuild their lives in Georgia.

Then, come get down and dirty with the French Community for a community gardening service project with newly settled refugees in Clarkston, Georgia. No skills are required, just an open and willing heart!

Raising Awareness among Local High School Students about NGO Work WHEN: October 23-November 9, 2013 WHERE: Participating Metro Atlanta high schools and universities With the support of Africa Atlanta, representatives from the Carter Center and the Peace Corps will share their field experience with students of French from participating Metro Atlanta high schools.

These NGOs use the French language on a regular basis for their work in West Africa, the Caribbean and Asia. This series of presentations will give students the opportunity to learn about current humanitarian issues and discover new ways to apply their French in the professional world.
