“After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews...”

John 19 (ESV)
This time of year, we are confronted by, challenged by, the Christian claim of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It would be a mistake to pass over this miracle without regard for the seriousness of the claim. I expect some are offended by the Christian insistence that all of history, and the hope for every human life, depends on whether this miracle actually happened. Let us allow for the scandal. Let us feel the full magnitude of the demands of this central belief of Christianity. Accepting this miracle is the entrance into Christian faith. The great first century evangelist Paul stated, “why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?”
I have always been a skeptic. But I set aside my questions because if God exists (and I believe the evidence for that is overwhelming), He can do whatever He chooses to do. If He created all that is seen and unseen, He most certainly can
MEN’S BREAKFAST

Men of Grace are invited to join a time of faith and fellowship while enjoying a delicious breakfast. Bring a neighbor!
undo death itself. The crucifixion and resurrection communicate God’s love and power more clearly and beautifully than any other human philosophy, or religious explanation.
The passage above provides detail. Two men, a man of means, Joseph of Arimathea, and a Pharisee named Nicodemus, talked the Roman governor Pilate into giving them possession of the lifeless body of Jesus. They took His body away, wrapped Him in burial cloths, as was the religious custom of the day. Then they placed Him in a nearby tomb, one that had been built for Joseph of Arimathea (Matthew 27).
These details, while not conclusive … o er support for the larger claims of the resurrection. No matter the questions we have, or don’t have, it is irresponsible, and dangerous, to avoid the implications of Easter morning. If Jesus rose from the dead our response cannot be casual and calm, a sidebar to our life. If the Resurrection has little or no e ect on our life, if we pass through these days thinking more of Rabbits, candy, and eggs than of Jesus and the empty tomb, we have not understood, or encountered, the power of what happened.
Christians spend their lives, and ultimately their eternities, discovering the beauty of Easter. It begins now. It begins here. Here at Grace – our Bible Studies, our meals together, our Sunday services, our prayers, the hours spent reading to kids at Adams Elementary, our investment in children and students, the finances we give, the forgiveness we offer, is all because of an empty tomb and a living Savior.
“Lord God, our Father, you are the light in which there is no darkness. And now you have kindled in us a light that can never be extinguished and that will ultimately drive out all darkness. You are the love that knows no coldness. And now you have loved even us and freed us to love you and each other. You are the life that mocks death. And now you have given us access to this eternal life. You have done all this in Jesus Christ, your Son, our brother. Do not let us – let none of us – remain dull and indifferent to your gi and revelation. Let us on this Easter morning see at least something of the riches of your goodness; let it enter into our hearts and minds, and let it enlighten us, uphold us, comfort us, and admonish us! … Amen.”
“The Faith of our Family and Friends”
In a world, and a city, more and more spiritually divided may God help us understand, respect, and respond to, the faith of those closest to us.
This Spring 2025 series will explore: the beliefs of those known as “The Nones”, and also the faith of our LDS “Mormon” friends and neighbors. This course will strengthen what we as Christians believe. And it will help us respond to others with respect, compassion, clarity, and love.
Join us at Noon on Friday, April 18, for a reflective service with a message, readings, and so music. Time to reflect on the su ering of Jesus, His crucifixion, death, and burial as He carried all our sin with Him in His death. Scripture will remind us of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Tarnish (1) to lose or cause to lose luster, especially as a result of exposure, air, or moisture.
(2) Dullness, loss of brightness.
Recently, Peggy Steere, our Deacon Moderator, received a beautiful sterling silver basket. Lucy Primrose donated the basket to be used for our Celebration of Life and special events held at our church. As evidenced by its dull gray appearance, it needed a little elbow grease and polish to bring it back to life again. Since I had polished another sterling silver item last year, Peggy asked me if I could do something with this piece. I was delighted to take on the challenge!
Boy! Did that bring back memories of me helping my mother polish up her collection of sterling silver silverware and various other pieces. Eventually, when sterling silver is exposed to air and the elements it oxidizes and dulls the surface and has a blackened appearance.
The day before any holiday, friends, or family gatherings, my assignment was to shine the tarnished pieces and bring them to their former glory. I must admit I did not relish this opportunity (chore ). But a er using some elbow grease and half of the polish container, the reward was the items were beautiful, shiny, and a delight to use as they lit up the table and bu et. These precious pieces gleamed.
Could we apply this to our own relationship with our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? We come “tarnished” before God. When we take communion or in our own private moments with Him, we can come before Him with our sins and receive His forgiveness by His blood shed for us, our hearts are free of the tarnish or imperfections. We are asked then to reflect His light and shine!
All Glory and Honor to our God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” – 1 Peter 1:18-19

As some of you know, I often write from the middle of my own life circumstances. And recently, I had some circumstances! I was driving home from work when my lane was stopped, waiting for the truck ahead to turn. I was just sitting there thinking about the evening and looking forward to seeing my children when suddenly I was violently hit from behind. My car was then forced into the back of the truck in front of me. And in the split second between being struck from behind and my airbag going o , I thought I have done nothing wrong.
I have done nothing wrong. Why would I think that? Not, what is happening? Or even shock, but I have done nothing wrong. I believe this thought came from what I call my trauma brain or trauma thinking. If I had made a di erent choice, perhaps switched to the right lane or not stopped to get gas, but gone straight home, I could somehow have prevented the accident. As if tough things that happen are somehow my fault.
I believe it is important to understand why we made certain decisions and the effects or consequences of those. It is wisdom to gain insight from our past and perhaps make a necessary change to help us in the future. But sometimes we pick up false responsibility by believing if we had changed our behavior or made a different decision that would have changed the outcome. I have spent years trying to understand how choices I’ve made impact and influence my life and those around me.
My question a er the accident was not, why on earth were those kids driving more than twice the speed limit, my question was, why didn’t I just go straight home instead of stopping for gas? The temptation is to try to take control in what feels like a very out of control situation. But life doesn’t always work like that. Why did I get into an accident? Because some kids were not following the street rules and were not paying attention. It had nothing to do with my behavior or my choice to stop and get gas. But I want to pick up responsibility here so I can protect myself in the future. I want it to be black and white. But that is simply not the case. I did nothing wrong. I can’t take responsibility and attempt to control this situation in hopes of quieting my mind and feeling safe. The truth is this happened, and there was nothing I could have done di erently to prevent it.
This accident was not only literally a hard stop for me, but a hard stop in the way I process my past, my life, and my decisions. I did not realize how much safety and peace I attach to trying to control people and situations around me.
I just bought a new book by Mel Robbins called Let Them. I cannot tell you how much this book is changing my life. The way I think, the way I behave, the way I live. The idea is exactly what the title says. Regarding people, she writes, “Let them be themselves because they are revealing who they are to you. Just Let Them, and then you get to choose what you do next. Let Them, followed by, now Let Me.” My point in sharing this is, instead of trying to take responsibility for situations and people that feel out of control, I am trying to Let Them. The kids who hit me and then ran from the scene of the accident, Let Them. And now, Let Me. Let Me not take responsibility for their stupidity, but Let Me decide what I will do and how I will respond.
I had no idea how much trying to control was controlling me. Instead of being angry about being hit, I was trying to understand how my choices that night were the cause.
Jesus is inviting me to something new. He is inviting me to let control be totaled with my totaled car. When I went to the tow yard to collect my belongings, I thought to myself, and here also lies control. It was a wakeup call for me. Wisdom invites me to come to peace with mystery and recognize that I am too quick to take responsibility for others and their choices.
Are there places you are trying to control? Have you taken up responsibility for things that aren’t yours to take up? Do you attempt to gain understanding out of an unhealthy need to control and prevent a future outcome?
What is Jesus inviting you into this spring? He’s smack dab in the middle of our life circumstances. Let’s listen to His wisdom.

its” to help us maintain what we have learned and will learn in the future. That will be our April and May Study.
Our Spring has a few big events to look forward to. The first full week of April is Spring Break for most, and we’ll be doing Special Outings for both Middle School and High School.
Middle School – Get Air Outing on Saturday, April 12th.
When life is a crazy whirlwind, God is always with us, through the darkest of downs and the most triumphant of ups.
“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid: do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
There has been a feeling of change in the air, and while we do not know what it is we trust that God will lead us down the path that is right for both ourselves and what the youth of our community needs. We have been more intentional about having a relationship with our students. Coming to the place where they are at spiritually.
With this last series on Integrity, we learned what it is, how to have it, and how to put it to use within our relationships. Authenticity + Good Character = Integrity. We have to be our Authentic Self or “Be Real”, otherwise we put on a mask around different people. Also have good character, by doing what’s right and imitating Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. That is the formula we learned with our students when it comes to remembering what it looks like to have integrity in all aspects of our lives. So, in the past few months we have studied “How to Grow in our Faith”, “Embracing Forgiveness” and “Intro to Integrity”. With these things learned, we are going to move on to a series on “Good Spiritual Hab-
High School – Day-trip to the Seattle Aquarium and to NEKO: A Cat Cafe on April 9.
Volunteer Appreciation – We will host our Volunteer Appreciation Celebration on Saturday, April 26th.
May is much more laid back, just our normal routine and maybe a TBD event, but we’ll keep you posted. But June! It’s got a few things right at the beginning of it. June 6th, we will have our annual end of school bonfire at the Merrill’s. Graduates and 5th Grade Celebration will fall on June 8th. And lastly, our last Youth Group of the School year will be on Wednesday, June 11th. As always, keep an eye on our monthly newsletter and Instagram page for more information.
This year, Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church has partnered with four dedicated interns who are not only active participants in church activities but also full-time students at Northwest University. Isaac Gambito, in his second year as an intern, is set to graduate with a business degree this May, leveraging his experience to explore career opportunities facilitated by NU’s resources. Alongside him, Linda Camarillo and Alex Moran have been instrumental leaders, with Alex serving on the summer sta at Camp Ghormley and both stepping up to run the youth group during Kara’s sabbatical. Jahzeel Garcia-
Figueroa, supported by Linda and Alex, has skillfully managed the youth group and Sunday morning’s Breakfast Club during this period. Aaron Brown completed his Associates degree at the end of the fall semester. Linda and Alex will graduate with their AA degree in December 2025. At this time Linda plans to pursue an education degree. Alex is interested in an education, psychology, or sociology degree.
The School of Ministry and Leadership (Intern Program) at Grace is actively recruiting new interns for the upcoming fall, offering not only practical ministry experience but also significant educational benefits. Each Tuesday, the program invites experts from the church community to teach specialized classes, enriching the interns’ learning experience. Recently, the team enhanced its facilities by installing a pickleball court in the gym, fostering community engagement and fellowship among young adults.
Under the capable direction of Larissa Belknap, now in her second year, the Intern Program excels in building deep, meaningful relationships with each intern. Larissa’s leadership ensures personalized mentorship and guidance, a hallmark of the program’s success. This holistic approach
ensures that students not only discover their passions and strengths but also contribute meaningfully to their community and beyond. The School of Ministry and Leadership not only offers college credit and a generous scholarship at Northwest University but also extends its opportunities beyond young adults to adults of all ages through online courses. With degrees available in fields ranging from business to ministry, and the flexibility to earn an associate degree that transfers universally, the program remains inclusive and accessible.
Supported by a dedicated advisory board that includes Jerry & Cathy Simons, Corday Trick, Kara Brown, Don Stuber, Jackie Anderson, Jake Kupp, Jay Sentz, Jo Branca, Ken Marble, Peggy Scha er, Steve Hildebrand and Larissa herself, the program has secured substantial funding. Contributions from partners like Grace’s Foundation and financial support from Northwest University have been crucial in sustaining and expanding the program’s impact.
Warmly, Don Stuber and Larissa Belknap
When a team of newly trained young missionaries first went to Battambang, Cambodia they arrived with not much more than their personal belongings, their Bibles and complete trust in the Lord’s plan for their lives and the people of this country. There were five of them, all under 28 years old, part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), the largest non-denominational Christian outreach in the world. One of them was Grace church’s own Garth Gustafson, now the Executive Director of YWAM Battambang. They did not know where their paths would lead, but all were ready to share the Gospel. They were greeted by a population scarred by past political events and looking for encouraging news.
During the Vietnam war, various leaders of the Cambodian government took opposing stands – at times supporting North Vietnam and other times working against the North and supporting the US e ort in South Vietnam. By the time
the war ended, Cambodia was in a state of flux and unfortunately ripe for a takeover by Pol Pot, leader of the country’s rebels, the Khmer Rouge. During his reign of terror in the mid ‘70’s to early ‘80’s most of the educated people over the age of 30 were killed in a genocide similar to the Holocaust in Germany, in which almost three million people died within a period of 20+ years. These troubled times were shown in the movie, “The Killing Fields,” a British film made in the mid 80’s which was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Those who didn’t die were detained in forced-labor and refugee camps where they lived in fear and had little or no hope.
After years of recovery and a series of unstable rulers, Cambodia now has a reasonably stable government which is permissive of most religions and very open improving the lot of their people. As a result of the genocide in the late 1900’s, Cambodia’s population is very young (average age is 26) and full of people who want to see their country succeed.
The original YWAM team met the people of Cambodia where they were and introduced them to the Good News of Jesus. The team knew that an entire generation had been deprived of education, vocations, leaderships and self-esteem by the atrocities of Pol Pot’s regime, and they had a vision of transforming the lives of those remaining through the Gospel, changing a nation in one generation for the glory of God. From this came the mission statement of YWAM Battambang, One Nation, One Generation.
From the original team of five who operated out of an evernumerous series of rental houses, the sta in Battambang has now grown to over 140, most of whom are Cambodian citizens. Through the strong faith of the sta and their willingness to follow God’s leading, the temporary housing has grown into a 13 acre campus with an education building for 1,000, a cafeteria for 500, multipurpose building that seats 2,000, seven dorms, a half size lighted turf and full-sized grass soccer fields, the latter’s irrigation system largely installed by Grace of Christ’s own Bruce Drollinger.
They have a K-6 grade school, an a er-school 12 level English program for 300-400 mid-high and high school students daily, a soccer ministry involving over 1,000 children, a slum ministry, and a women’s ministry as well as holding twice
weekly church services on their campus. The latest addition is a large multipurpose building and community center which is used not only for their ministry, but also for community events. The campus and all of its buildings and programs have been made possible by the support of donors.
The outreach of YWAM Battambang has spread to other areas of the country. In the 25 provinces of Cambodia there are now YWAM bases in 14 of them. The Lord is on the move in this amazing country!
Since 2007, a team from the Yakima/NW area has visited the YWAM bases in Cambodia at least once each year, including over 60 from Grace of Christ. Volunteers are able to work in the school programs, visit surrounding villages, help with the slum ministry and rice distribution, work on base improvement projects, meet the children at Home of Love Orphanage which has been supported by many from this church, and get to know the warm, welcoming and joyful people of this country. Consider joining the next team-you will be blessed beyond measure!

Happy Easter! He Has Made Me Glad!
Our spring chapel theme this year was “Generous Jesus.” In February, March, and April, every story in chapel was an example of how Jesus shows love, compassion, healing, and forgiveness to all people. He has loved us from the beginning of time, and He teaches us how to love one another. For Easter this year, we will celebrate Generous Jesus just like the verses in Psalms 100:
Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!
Serve the LORD with gladness!
Come into His presence with singing!
Know that the LORD, He is God!
It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise!
Give thanks to Him; bless His name!
For the LORD is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations. These kids know how to sing and praise and dance before the Lord! We celebrate Easter with instruments, streamers, and lots of singing. Make a joyful noise!

Don’t you know that day dawns after night, showers displace drought, and spring and summer follow winter? Then, have hope! Hope forever, for God will not fail you!
~ Charles Spurgeon, Jesus Today by Sarah Young
The above book, by Sarah Young, was given to me by our own Cordy Jennings in 2019, the year my mother passed. It has truly been a gi of Hope. I still read it today and from time to time. And it continues to give me hope. Thank you, Cordy. My prayer is for you to continue to feel better and stronger.
In the last newsletter, I spoke of how spring was just around the corner. Then it got very cold and snowy. I am grateful, now, that spring really is here. We have many things going on.
In March we celebrated Ash Wednesday with a delicious two soup dinner and a poignant service. In April we look forward to Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Easter, all of which re-
mind us of our salvation and the sacrifice that has been made for us. We are saved by grace. We are forgiven. We are loved!
“A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” – John 13:34
“Love is patient, Love is Kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
The Hospitality Ministry Team continues to look for volunteers at the Welcome Center, the Greeter’s stations and for Ushers. Please remember to check for sign-up sheets at the Welcome Center for all three areas of service. We also have sign-up sheets for other activities that go on in our church. For example, we had a sign-up sheet for the recently held Chili CookO and for our Preschool’s fundraiser selling Hanging Flower Baskets. Right now, you’ll find a sign-up sheet for the Women’s Spring Luncheon, which will be held on May 13th.

“And now, these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
– 1 Corinthians 13:13
Amy Brownlee, Chuck and Joy Davis, and Carol Guzel joined Grace of Christ March 8th a er taking a Next Steps class led by Pastor Curt and meeting with a few of our Elders. They were o icially welcomed and introduced on Sunday, March 23.
Also, on March 23 we had two baptisms. Fi h grader Sofia Rivera, daughter of Bladimir and Trinidad and Damien Santos, a young man who has grown up in our Trailseeker ministry with leader Greg Nebeker.
Baptism is one of two sacraments commanded by Jesus, communion is the other. We participate in both out of our obedience to, and love for, God. Baptism does not save us … it is our God-given faith in Jesus that saves us. Baptism is a sign, and a seal, upon a person’s life. A sign indicating that we belong to the family of God. A seal, because we believe God's Holy Spirit is already at work in us to create a desire to know and love Jesus. Join us in welcoming, supporting, and loving Damien, Amy, Chuck, Joy, and Carol. Together at Grace, sharing the love and grace of Christ Jesus.
In March, we had an opportunity to highlight and honor a few artists in our church. On Sundays, March 16, 23 & 30, Wendy Guske, Cathy Campbell, and Olivia Taylor displayed some of their art in the Garden Room and invited our church family and community to enjoy, ask questions, and share. It was a time to embrace art as an expression of love for our Lord and Savior. Wendy Guske, a long time, talented artist
of many mediums, and a talented gi ed teacher, shared her passion for art and the Lord. She expresses her love for God through her art and uses the gifts He’s given her to teach others. She has been teaching Cathy Campbell and Olivia Tayler who also displayed pieces of art in our Garden Room in March. We look forward to the next series, later this summer!
Sonny Salsbury will be teaching a 3-week class on Sunday mornings based of his latest book, “Sermons on the Silver Screen.” Join him on July 13, 20, & 27 in the Lounge at 10:15am.
Life’s a Prize by Sonny Salsbury
Along a sad and dreary road
And on the day of days, There walked two men in pondering thought O’er God’s confusing ways.
And then a stranger joined their march
And talked with them of all
The things concerning God’s Love-gi
To lift man from his fall.
Soon He had gone but not before These traveler’s eyes could see, That He who’d walked and talked with them Was the Christ of Galilee.
And so along the roads we walk, He waits with us to start;
And soon in fellowship with Him we’ll find Life’s prize – a burning heart.

• OUTDOOR EDUCATION – This April and May, we are hosting and planning to run eight Outdoor Education programs. These are a mix of public and private schools that are coming to Camp Ghormley to give their students an outdoor learning experience. Pray that these programs run smoothly, that we have the right sta to teach and run the classes and activities we are o ering, and that His love shines through everything we are doing, especially to the public schools - their Outdoor Education may be the only time we have the opportunity to minister to them!
