I am not ashamedof the gospel.
ROMANS 1:16

From the first chapter of the book of Romans, Paul writes...

“First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers.” And then a few verses later, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes... as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith.’” – Romans 1:8-10, 16-17

At a time when increasing numbers are turning away from the Church, my appreciation for the global Church, and our local church, is growing. From my earliest days the Presbyterian Church in my hometown of Danville, California invested in me, taught me, encouraged me, loved me.

Whitworth brought rich friendships, passionate professors, thoughtful discussions. Seminary introduced me to brilliant academic minds and a simmering cauldron of new and sometimes unusual ideas.

CHURCH WEEKDAY SUMMER HOURS

Monday – Thursday Main Office 8:30am to 5pm

Friday Main Office 8:30am to 1pm

Building Open 8am to 7pm

Looking back on my life I am humbled by God-given opportunities and blessings. Kathaleen and I are grateful for the community of friends and faith here at Grace of Christ. I have a profound sense of my weakness, God’s sufficiency, and your grace, when I stand among you.

With Paul I say, “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.” Two days ago, a friend, who is not a member of this church, spoke about the incredible history and legacy of this church. I am aware of that. She also spoke of the ongoing sacrifice and witness of Grace today. I’m aware of that too. There isn’t a single local church that has a guaranteed future... but there is both beauty and urgency in the yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows. The fragileness of the local church, every local church, makes life together exciting, a bit frustrating, and always miraculous. What an honor to serve with you here at Grace as we seek to know God, seek to love God, seek to love others in HIS NAME. At Grace we are a part of something, SOMEONE, much bigger, more loving, who continues to invite US to be HIS. We are His. We are Jesus people, a Bible church, a praying community, a caring family, a sacrificing, loving, serving collection of Jesus followers.

Here at Grace of Christ we are not ashamed of the good news of Jesus! Why? Because we know that it comes with the power of God to save all who believe. It’s not our power, it’s His! And so, until our final day comes, may we live and serve, boldly and humbly, and with the assurance of His love working in us and through us.

I thank God for you!

KARL BARTH

“The Epistle to the Romans” (Early 1900’s Commentary)

“The Gospel is not a truth among other truths. Rather, it sets a question-mark against all truths. The Gospel is not the door but the hinge … The Gospel of the Resurrection is the action, the supreme miracle, by which God, the unknown God dwelling in light unapproachable, the Holy One, Creator, and Redeemer, makes Himself known.”

Karl Barth, The Epistle to the Romans, 1968 edition, Oxford University Press, p.35.

EUGENE PETERSON

“The Pastor: A Memoir”

BOOK EXCERPT “If the church doesn’t rightly understand who God is, what He has done and is doing, who we are in Him, who He is in us, what we’re called to become and to do by the indwelling power of the Spirit – well, it’s the world that suffers.” Eugene Peterson, The Pastor: A Memoir (New York: Harper One, 2012) pp, 104-106.

PRAYER OF Martin Luther (1500’s)

“O Father, it is indeed true that we cannot be strong by our own power. How can we stand before Your might if You do not Yourself strengthen and comfort us? Therefore, dear Father, embrace us, accomplish Your will in us, that we may be Your kingdom to Your praise and glory … Give us our daily bread. Establish in our hearts Your dear Son Jesus Christ, who is the True bread of heaven.”

The Blessings of NOT Getting What You Asked For

The Palm Sunday Service was a delight! The children’s singing inspired the entire congregation to reflect on the event that God orchestrated to change the destiny for mankind. I was privileged to help serve the breakfast buffet to the kiddos between services. It was quite a spread! The long table began with Kathaleen’s mouth-watering cinnamon rolls. Followed by a colorful platter piled high with fresh pineapple, apple slices, mandarin oranges, strawberries, watermelon and grapes. Down the line a bit were warm mini egg-bites. And at the end of this beautiful buffet, was a stack of crisp bacon strips. I had bacon duty. The first one to dash to the table and grab a plate was a little boy about 5 years old. He raced by the cinnamon rolls, fruit, and eggs and stopped in front of me. He paused for a moment looking the bacon over, lifted his head and making good eye contact said, “May I have some bacon please?”

“Of course! How many slices would you like?” I responded. He closed his eyes as if deep in thought. His eyes popped open wide, and he blurted out, “I can count to 17. So, I’d like 17 slices of bacon please.”

My mouth dropped open, I sputtered and gasped and said, “Well, I’ll tell you what. There is a pile of bacon here so giving you 17 slices is no problem, but I’m going to give you two. When you are ready for more just come back.” I placed two slices of bacon on his plate and he hurried off to his seat. Sure enough in no time at all he was in front of me with his plate thrust out, but this time there was also a cinnamon roll on it.

I said, “I see you are ready for two more! And you got a cinnamon roll too. Enjoy!”

He came back one more time. This time he had three grapes, a strawberry and a mini egg bite on his plate. He was one satisfied and happy little guy even though he didn’t get what he asked for. What he asked for was a plate of bacon. What he received was a glorious breakfast buffet!

I smile every time I recall that encounter. It helps me to be grateful when God doesn’t give me what I ask for. We have a good Heavenly Father, who knows well that too much of a good thing might not be good for us. That little bacon loving child reminds me to thrust my plate out to receive the better gift or plan.

I desire my plate to be piled high with more fruit of the Spirit. More love, more joy, more peace, more long suffering, more kindness, more goodness, more faithfulness, more gentleness and more self-control. Pile them on my plate as high as You can count Lord. Thank you.

Hospitality

“God will show His mercy forever and ever to those who worship and serve Him.” – Luke 1:50

Hello everyone, what a bustling time this is! The coming of summer has been full of activities, and we are filling our calendars with much to look forward to. On Mother’s Day we celebrated the women in our lives and we witnessed two baptisms. In Mid-May we had a lovely spring women’s luncheon with our neighbors from Mabel Swan. In June our church will be celebrating Father’s Day, welcoming Starry Starry Night and hosting a lunch for Outreach Camp families. It seems there is always something going on! On Sunday mornings our Garden Room has been buzzing with adults and children, both visitors and those who already attend. It is heartwarming to see and hear the buzz. If you are a visitor here, I hope you have been introduced to the Welcome Center and received a gift bag of information and goodies, as well as a copy of Grace Alive. We are happy you are here.

HELP NEEDED

Thank you to all of you who have been serving treats after the services, offering assistance with baptisms, at the Welcome Center or working with the ushers and/or GREETERS. You are greatly appreciated. Also appreciated are those who have been receiving calls to fill in where there are openings on the sign-up sheets. The response to these calls has been very positive and I have enjoyed talking with each of you. It is our goal that signing up at the Welcome Center for any of these volunteer positions becomes a normal part of your Sunday morning routine. We love to see you there.

If you have concerns about serving at the Welcome Center on a Sunday morning, you aren’t alone. Expressed concerns mostly involve not knowing what is going on and safety issues. While we hope to have training in the near future in these areas, please be assured we hear your concerns. I work there frequently and because things change week to week, I often don’t know all that is going on. That’s OK, we can figure it out and get back those inquiring as needed. Other duties can be shown to you when your shift begins. As for safety, there are Walkie Talkies at the Welcome Center on the table behind the counter. They are labeled with names of those who respond to them. If you want to see them and how they are used, please stop by and ask for a demo. Working at the Welcome Center can be rewarding in many ways. Besides meeting new people and having the honor of serving them, perhaps even becoming good friends, is being privy to fun and interesting things. An example of this showed up at the Welcome Center on Mother’s Day. We were given copies of a handout called, “POSITION: MOM.” Pastor Curt shared this fun read that long ago had been shared with him by his mother-in-law. If you have not seen it, you can obtain a copy by stopping by the Welcome Center. I, being a Mom, enjoyed it thoroughly.

“All your children will be taught by the LORD, and they will have much peace.” – Isaiah 54:13

ONE OF OUR GOALS at Grace of Christ is to be welcoming to those attending for the first time. This can feel intimidating and isolating if they don’t have those familiar to them greeting them. That is where we all come in. It can be awkward for us, too, if this isn’t within our comfort zone. The following tips can be helpful.

PRAY: Pray for this day, those in attendance, our community and today’s service. Dedicate yourself to the Lord’s ministry.

OBSERVE: Observe those who come through the doors of the Church. Offer information/ assistance to anyone who appears to need it.

INITIATE THE WELCOME: Initiate the welcome by extending a hand, smiling and introducing yourself. Make eye contact and listen. Wonderful things can come from this.

SERVE: Be ready and willing with an attitude of friendliness and commitment to help make this a good experience for them. Introduce them to others if the situation offers itself.

Don’t worry because I am with you. Don’t be afraid, because I am your God. I will make you strong and will help you; I will support you with my right hand that saves you...I am the Lord your God, who holds your right hand, and I tell you, “Don’t be afraid, I will help you.” – Isaiah 41:10,13

Missions Ministry

To say that Adams school has been a blessing to me both during my working days at the YMCA and during my retirement is an understatement. I started connecting with Adams around 2006 or 2007 when I began working with ASPIRE mentoring program at the YMCA through my retirement in 2018. Then I continued through the present through our church involvement. Like many things that we take for granted and are deeply missed when taken from us, Covid had me floundering in the volunteer department. So as soon as I got the green light, I was banging at their door.

To

Find Your Mission. Find Your Passion.

our wonderful, amazing, caring and awe-inspiring church family

Your generous and willing spirit to follow God has blessed hundreds of kids. Here are just a few ways your time and resources have helped to make the all the difference to those in need in our community and throughout the world.

My main connection over the years has been to help kids learn to read. I have come across students of all reading levels but concentrate on ones who are selected for extra work. As I’ve often told other volunteers, that is only part of the reason for being there – just as important is to build a relationship with the kids and listen to them, talk about whatever is on their mind, encourage them - thus really being reading mentors.

Although we’ve heard this before, I am emphasizing that I am the larger recipient in this relationship. I knew I had to find something during retirement to be part of my life that

would be rewarding. I do some other volunteer work, but this is the one that keeps me going. Do you know how heartwarming it is to walk into the courtyard and have kids running from their recess time over to tell me what is going on in their lives or the big smiles on their faces when I or any of our readers appear at their doors? Or whenever we see an improvement in their reading skills and in turn, their overall behavior? I definitely benefit from the volunteer time and I just want to thank the wonderful staff at Adams present and past who have given me the opportunity to make my work and retirement days a very positive time.

Missions Ministry

Close your eyes and visualize concrete, asphalt, and brick everywhere you look. Turning in a circle, occasionally you see a speck of green. Maybe it’s a weed, or a lone tree, or even a small yard 10’x10’ of half dead grass. The sun is beating down in a 90-degree heat. In the small yard of an apartment complex, six other kids are playing with leftover toys, some broken, some treasured and protected. All of them dirty and worn. School is over and nothing is planned for the next two months to break up the boredom. At six years old, you see days of little food and family fights stretch before you.

Then your mom reminds you that you are going away for a week, to a camp with people you don’t know. You can only take some clothes in a bag. Life is scary for a child of six years. Questions swirl in your head. It is eight in the morning, and a car drives up and a man you met a couple times at school gets out. This man is the one taking you to camp. As you grab your bag, you say goodbye to Abuela and your brother, hug your mom and climb into the van. The first stop is a big building, and you wonder if this is where the camp will be? The man says no. Instead, you see other kids from school and other adults. Yay! It’s play time in a small gym. You are given a new shirt to wear; it has some writing on it. Trailseekers, it reads.

Next, it’s time to line up. All the kids are going to meet some new friends. You walk up some stairs and enter a hallway. Some music starts and your line is ushered into another large room. You walk to a row where you sit down. The man that picked you up is talking to a large group of people with a microphone. There’s a video playing of a pretty wilderness, and the man is saying that is where the camp is. But before you get to go, you are going to meet a new friend. Your name is called, and you walk up to the man and with the microphone, he introduces you to a big high schooler and you are paired off. The two of you get lunch together, sit down together in the room next door among a group of 41 other pairs of kids/high schoolers. All of you are watching a clown while you eat your lunch. Soon, it all becomes a blur, you and your new friend sit together on a bus, playing games as you head to camp.

While you are on the bus, among the games and the conversations, and the noise, your new friend starts to talk to you about God. A simple little lesson to an adult, but to you it’s a WOW experience. There is someone that is very big that you’ve never seen that made you and loves you. The drive to Orcas Encampment opens a door unto a world with a supernatural God that loves you, doesn’t yell, hit or leave you and wants you to be a part of His family. As the week goes by, you live in a cabin in a park. Everywhere you look, you see green. Green trees, green grass, a large lake, deer, birds, an afternoon rain. Everyone is so nice. No one yells. Your high school friend stays with you all day, talking, playing, laughing, learning about God and Jesus.

This is just a glimpse into how Orcas Encampment opens a child’s life to the wonder and love of our amazing God. Please pray for the kids, students, and staff as they experience God in new ways at the Orcas Encampment this summer. Pray for the next generation of Christian sisters and brothers as they learn about our wondrous God. Pray for their protection from this world and its many pitfalls and pray that they may grow in His grace and truth.

Sharing the Good News

“Missions exists because worship doesn’t.” Think about that statement from John Piper, a pastor and well-known author. What does it mean? And what does it mean for us as individuals and as a church?

God created a beautiful world and populated it with human beings, with whom He wanted to have fellowship. In Genesis, God came to the Garden of Eden in the cool of the evening to walk with his friends, Adam and Eve. But they hid from Him because they had disobeyed Him. The consequences were severe, and they were banished from the beautiful Garden of Eden. The rest of the story covers the whole Bible, as God set about restoring that close fellowship between humans and Himself.

Ultimately, that is why Jesus came and lived among us and died and rose again. Now, through Jesus, the way to renewed fellowship with God is wide open. But guess what? It’s not just for Jews, or Americans, or any other group of people; it is for all people everywhere! In Revelation 7:9 we are told that people from every people and language and tribe and nation will be praising God together around God’s throne! And why? Because He is WORTHY of all praise, all honor and glory and power, because of who He is, the Immortal, Invincible, Almighty God, King of kings and Lord of lords! And one day EVERY knee will bow before Him and EVERY tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Until then, we still need missions, to go and tell others this good news, as the Great Commission of Matthew 28:1820 tells us to do. Go and tell your neighbors, go and tell the homeless person you feel sorry for, go and tell your friends

and your enemies, your classmates, your teammates, coworkers, business associates, the clerk at the store. Tell them that God exists and He loves them and wants them to know Him.

Every week, over a hundred kids get together in small groups to be fed, spiritually and physically under the banner of Blessings of Hope. The kids range in ages from five to 18. Some are taught by our own Lani Johnson, others are instructed by Lani’s associates. All the teachers have a desire to feed the hungry and share the good news of the Gospel. Here are some new pictures that Lani and associates have posted on Facebook from their weekly meetings. May the Lord be praised. – Psalm 28:6, 150:6.

Happy Summer! Here is the latest from the youth

This year we proudly congratulate Juan Bautista, Ruby Garcia, Brian Martinez, Addison Mathews, Belen Vazquez, and Peter Whitney on graduating with their high school diplomas! We have witnessed these individuals grow and mature over the past four years, weather all sorts of challenges and hardships & rise to the occasion of enduring, persevering, and excelling through it all as they have inspired the rest of us in the process.

We send them onto this next season of their lives with eager expectation for all the good things God has in store for them, a commitment to remain at their sides as their forever-faithfamily and a confidence that the God who has begun a good work in them will be faithful to finish it. (Philippians 1:6) Congrats 2025 Grads!!

Springtime was highlighted by our spring break outings! The high schoolers chose to go to Seattle for the day. We made a reservation at a Cat Cafe. This is a coffee shop with a cat room where you can go in to play with the cats, which are available for adoption. It was so precious to see our students play with all those adorable cats. Right after that we zoomed

on over to the Seattle Aquarium and had the chance to see their newest building. Some of our students have not been to an aquarium before so it was quite a treat for them.

We did not leave our Middle schoolers hanging… we booked a session at Get Air for them, and we had such a blast! One of our kiddos hadn’t been there before, and he had so much fun he wants to go again.

After Spring Break, we began a series called How to See God. We got into how Jesus was the visible image of God who is invisible, and how we in the present have the Holy Spirit; who is manifested though the fruits of the spiritLove, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Gentleness, Goodness, Faithfulness, & Self-Control.

God is doing something special in our community. Every time we gather, we as a staff, learn more and more about these kids as they become more and more open. That is what we have been praying about: for the students who come to this space we have created to be in true community with us and with the other students. It is most prominent within our high school group. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2. We have started a Tuesday night group for high schoolers, for a chance to get deeper and closer. To show them how to embody the body of the church, and what that means.

For this Summer we have a lot coming up so get ready to mark those calendars. First thing, we are celebrating our graduates on Sunday, June 8th in between services. Our last Youth group is June 11th, we are doing our annual scavenger hunt! Then there is a volunteer opportunity: Outreach camp is June 13th–15th. Our mission trip for this year is with Habitat for Humanity, July 13th–19th. As for camps: all camps are open for registration on the Ghormley website. Contact us for any further questions as well as keep an eye on our monthly newsletter.

Greetings Grace Families!

As I write this, I am sitting outside enjoying the spring sun and soft breeze. The air almost feels like a Texas wind – soft, like a kiss of cotton on the skin. And I realize, summer is just around the corner.

As soon as that thought passes through my mind, I feel something lodging in my throat, my heart starts to beat a little too fast, and my breath catches. Summer.

What is it about summer?

Some say divorce is like a death. For me, this has not been the case. Death is definite, absolute. Divorce, for me, is not something that can ever be final or over. It would be simpler if divorce was a grave I could visit, cry for a while, leave some flowers on and exit. But the ramifications of divorce are everpresent in my life. And they are hard.

And summer? Summer used to be magical. It was pool basketball, late evenings out under the white patio lights, BBQ’s every weekend, laughter, music, chilly mornings on the lake and hot afternoons jumping off the boat. It was camping, fishing, beach time and FAMILY. Summer was family.

But then there was the summer my world fell apart, and I realized I could not continue in my marriage. That it was not safe to do so. That it was not healthy for my family or me. Now, summer is filled with a tidal wave of feelings—both good and bad – that my mind has attached to summer.

Many of you have heard of or read the book, The Body Keeps the Score. It is an inspiring story of how a group of therapists and scientists, together with their courageous patients, integrated brain science, attachment research, and body awareness into treatments that can free trauma survivors from the tyranny of the past.

My body keeps the score in terms of emotions connected to seasons and months. There are those months like January or April where there are no haunting hurts like an amputated limb, nor is there anticipated excitement for what those months bring. I have not associated those months with any significant memories or emotions. But summer is full of emotion.

What do we do when our bodies and emotional selves have attachments to things such as places or seasons? Is this a problem? We were given incredible brains and are complex beings that are capable of so much. We relish the amazing stories and fond memories of our lives, but what do we do with the hard places?

I am reminded that there are still landscapes in my mind and heart that need healing. Summer for one. For Jesus is always inviting us into more freedom. How do we accept His invitation? We begin with recognition. Recognize what we are feeling. Sometimes we don’t even have a name for it. At the beginning of this article, the only words I was able to say, were that something was lodging in my throat. Admitting what I was experiencing created space and opportunity for Jesus to speak to me.

Next comes acceptance. Acceptance does not go hand in hand with sense or logic. With all the happy summer memories, why was the joy of summer being stolen from me? I just had to accept it.

Then there’s the invitation. The past is not the author of my life, nor is divorce or even family. Jesus is the author of my life, and my invitation is to put the pen back in His hand and let Him write. Let Him heal the pain and bring fresh insight. Let Him show me the truth and how to reconnect with joy.

Summer? I think it’s going to be okay.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” – Hebrews 12:2

WOW WOMEN OF THE WORD BIBLE STUDY SEPTEMBER 9 | 9:45AM | WEST LOUNGE FALL 2025 – MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

The 2025 fall session of Women of the Word (WOW) will begin Tuesday, September 9th and run through November 18th. We meet from 9:45-11 A.M. in the West Lounge.

We are blessed with a team of teaching leaders who each bring their gifted styles, perspectives and insights into the study of God’s word. If you’re looking for fellowship, developing new friendships, digging into the Bible and supporting each other in prayer, then WOW is the place to be on Tuesday mornings.

Gratitude explodes for Donna Oliva’s organization and teaching leadership of WOW over these past years. Donna is bowing out of her planning organizational role but gratefully will continue as a teaching leader. Thank you, Donna, for serving God and the WOW women with your encouragement, sensitivity and love of God’s word.

So “Mark” your calendars for September 9th, 9:45 A.M. for the study of the gospel of Mark. Join WOW women as we learn more about Jesus through the eyes of Mark.
