OF DISTANT LANDS AND TIMES PAST In the words of Johann Sebastian Bach, “the aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” As I observe the varied musical offerings that this season affords us at First Presbyterian Church, I see a multitude of talents and ensembles that each in their own way help us all to experience the glory of God and to find refreshment, peace, and comfort in a lively and chaotic world.

As you flip through these pages, I hope that you find interest in several forthcoming events. From the talents of local artists to guest performers from around country, we welcome new artists while continuing to celebrate a number of annual traditions such as Lessons and Carols for Advent and the Jazz Brunch. I cannot help but also highlight the addition of three exciting, new events: Winter’s Eve Collage, Le Theatre de Marionette in January, and the only performance this season in East Texas of The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys. I look forward to seeing you and yours at some of these events.

A Journey With Crimson Thursday, September 13, 2018 7:00PM Sanctuary Free Admission

Hailed for their performances of both lyric beauty and stormy drama, the Crimson Duo - harpist Jaymee Haefner and violinist Matt Milewski - open this year’s series with a unique collaborative program. In partnership with nature photographer Luke Mislinski, the Crimson Duo plan to take you on a journey of both sound and sight. Scaling Everest: Rachmaninoff’s Third Thursday, October 11, 2018 7:00PM Sanctuary Free Admission

Widely regarded as a pianistic Mount Everest for its many daunting challenges, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto was written specifically for his first North American tour in 1909.

Hailed as an artist of ‘magnificent pianism’ with an ‘engaging personality,’ British pianist Tom Hicks joins Weston Jennings for a rare performance of this work as re-imagined for piano and organ. The sheer amount of pyrotechnics for both hands and feet promises to be exhilarating!

For the Fallen: Nov. 11, 1918 Sunday, November 11, 2018 4:00PM Sanctuary $15 Adults • $5 Students

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great War ended. One hundred years later, the Tyler Civic Chorale seeks to re-tell the stories of a generation of composers and writers who either lost their lives in conflict or whose lives were permanently affected by the First World War.

Silly Strings Thursday, January 10, 2019 1:00PM & 7:00PM Fellowship Hall Free Admission

Join Le Theatre de Marionette for a fun musical variety show presenting several of their entertaining and unique handmade puppets including clowns, roller skaters, jugglers, dancing skeletons, teddy bears, Michael Jackson, and even Elvis. Plan to stay afterwards to discover more about these marionettes and to catch a glimpse of how theatrical magic is made.

Recommended for all ages, but particularly families and children ages 2-15. Each show lasts approximately 25 minutes and is presented in cabaret format.

Hailed by The New York Times as an “outstanding ensemble,” the Verona Quartet—winner of the 2015 Concert Artists Guild Competition—have quickly earned a stellar reputation as one of the most compelling young quartets in chamber music today for their “interpretive strength…robust characterization [and] commanding resonance” (Calgary Herald). Concluding with Intimate Letters, Leoš Janácek’s “manifesto on love,” this performance is certain to bring the affairs of the heart into focus on this special evening.

Founded in 1919, the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys is considered by many to be the leading U. S. ensemble in the Anglican choral tradition. The Stations of the Cross by Marcel Dupré Thursday, April 11, 2019 7:00PM Sanctuary Free Admission

For centuries Christians have meditated on Jesus’ final journey to Calvary.

Inspired by the traditional Stations of the Cross, French organist and composer Marcel Dupré improvised fourteen dramatic musical depictions in 1932 interspersed with readings by Paul Claudel (French Ambassador to Washington, DC from 1928-1933). In this contemplative, candle-lit performance, Claudel’s poetry and original paintings by local artists join Dupré’s Le Chemin de la Croix (Stations of the Cross) in illustrating Christ’s final hours.

With a second-place prize from the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland under its belt, Lyon College’s Scottish Heritage Program truly is the most significant in the nation for bag piping, drumming, and Highland dancing.

The arts program is designed to teach, preserve, and celebrate the Scottish arts and traditions in America. Founded in 1872 by the Presbyterian Church, whose roots are in Scotland, Lyon College is the oldest private college in Arkansas.

This rarely heard oratorio celebrates the power of music to transform the moods and passions of humankind. tylercivicchorale.org Now in its 51st season as Tyler’s premiere choral ensemble, the Tyler Civic Chorale continues to bring to life an impressive range of music, from great, sacred masterworks to beloved American folk songs and carols. Over the course of its history with most of the last half-century in residence at First Presbyterian Church–the Chorale has sung requiems

by Brahms, Mozart, Duruflé and Fauré, as well as Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation, and dozens of other masses, motets, cantatas, and oratorios.

Voices of Faith

The choir gathers together over seventy-five talented vocalists from the East Texas area–including middle school, high school, and college students–in a Christ-centered, community choral program under the direction of Pam Eikner, with accompanist Dana Bertino. Students believe their talents are a gift from God, and they actively seek ministry opportunities.

SEATING & TICKETS Seats are offered on a first come, first served basis; all Sanctuary seating is in pews. The majority of concerts are free and open to the public. For ticketed concerts, purchase tickets at the door or in advance. Ticket purchase information is listed with concerts in this brochure, where applicable.

PARKING Free parking is available in two parking lots at FPC: one on the south side of the Fellowship Hall, and another east of the main building. Designated handicap parking is available in the upper portion of the south lot near Fellowship Hall. Please do not park at the local businesses surrounding the church.

CHILDREN Older children are welcome at our concerts; however, if they become noisy or unsettled, please quietly exit the Sanctuary in order not to disturb other concert goers.

A nursery is not provided during concerts, with the of events taking place on Sunday mornings.

CHILDREN’S CHOIRS

The Carol Choir teaches basic music reading skills and singing technique, as well as tenets of Reformed worship and music. The Kirk Ringers combines elements of singing and handbells. Both groups contribute to worship throughout the school year.

ADULT ENSEMBLES

The Chancel Choir leads worship with a musical variety ranging from the great anthems of the Reformation and choral masterworks to modern, hymn-based anthems and Gospel music. The Carillon Handbell Choir chimes often during worship, utilizing a five-octave set of Malmark bells.

ORGAN

FPC Tyler’s sanctuary organ—the largest in all of East Texas—was built in 2000 by Casavant Frères. It features beautiful clear flutes, warm diapasons, and a variety of reed color and tone, as well as a generous number of lush strings and celestes.
