Lord, in thy word we search for thee

Thomas Tallis (1505-1585)

Lord, in thy word we search for thee, we search with trembling awe; open our eyes, and let us see the wonders of thy law. Now let our darkness comprehend the light that shines so clear; Now the revealing spirit send, and give us ears to hear. Amen.

I lift my eyes to the hills— from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

Let us worship God!

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Faithful God, you have appointed us your witnesses, to be light that shines in the world. Let us not hide the bright hope you have given us, but tell everyone your love, revealed in Jesus Christ the Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

The Confession of Sin

During Lent, we focus on our baptismal covenant and our dependence upon God’s grace in our lives. This theme is highlighted liturgically by our symbolic gathering around the baptismal font for the Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon.

* Prayer of Confession

Gracious God, you have taught us how to pray, laying all our concerns before you. But we live our lives as if you were little more than an indulgent parent, only giving us what we want, but never requiring of us a commitment in return. Forgive us, Lord, and bend our wills to your own, that we may be a faithful people; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We pause for a time for silent prayer.

* The Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy upon us. (3x) Christ, have mercy upon us. (3x) Lord, have mercy upon us. (3x)

* Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

The Response to God’s Word

* Affirmation of Faith

In Christ God gave us a glimpse of the new creation A Declaration of Faith he has already begun and will surely finish. Chapter 10, Hope in God We do not know when the final day will come. In our time we see only broken and scattered signs that the renewal of all things is under way. We do not yet see the end of cruelty and suffering in the world, the church, or our own lives. But we see Jesus as Lord. As he stands at the center of our history, we are confident he will stand at its end. He will judge all people and nations. Evil will be condemned and rooted out of God's good creation. There will be no more tears or pain. All things will be made new. The fellowship of human beings with God and each other will be perfected. Amen.

Lift up your heart. We lift them up to the Lord.

Give to the Lord glory and praise. God’s love endures forever.

After each petition is said: Let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Our Father, who art in heaven; hallowed be thy Name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
