WELCOME TO THE LIFE YOU WANT IN HARRISON

Welcome

to the life you want in Harrison, Arkansas

Thinking about relocating to North Central Arkansas? Harrison was named “One of the Best Small Towns in America” by author and journalist, Norm Crampton. You will love living in Harrison for many reasons, and our Mayor, Jerry Jackson, has narrowed the list down to his top five.

AFFORDABLE COST OF LIVING

Let’s start with the fact that Harrison has an affordable cost of living. Our population may be small — about 13,000 — but we have a healthy economy, with all the resources you might expect in a larger community. It is no surprise the Harrison area real estate market is vibrant. Homes and land are quite affordable, with some of the lowest real estate prices in the country. Whatever lifestyle you are looking for, you will find the perfect home affordably priced. Many people who have relocated to the area from other regions have found their dream home, with plenty of money remaining for furthering their investments. The median sold home price in Harrison is $162,900. Whether you are looking for a luxury home, something more moderately priced, a home in one of Harrison’s historic neighborhoods, a country setting, or a farm with lots of acreage, our local realtors are ready to help. If building your dream home is more your style, Harrison has the land and the builders to help make that dream come true.

NATURAL BEAUTY

*Forests, rolling hills, the Buffalo National River, the White River, Bull Shoals Lake, Beaver Lake, Lake Norfork, along with acres of impressive farmland are just outside your back door.*

TRUE FOUR SEASONS

Winter, summer, spring and fall. In Harrison, you truly experience them all. Winter in the Ozarks gives you a chance to enjoy the warmth of home while Mother Nature revitalizes. Spring witnesses the rebirth of the natural beauty of the area. Feel the warmth and vitality of summer. Fall brings cool fall nights, bon fires, football games, and changing colors of the Ozark Mountain region.

CENTRALLY LOCATED

Take a look at the map and it is easy to see why Harrison is called “The Crossroads of the Ozarks.” A new adventure is awaiting you in every direction. Head north on Highway 65 to Branson and Springfield. Highway 7 North will take you to Lead Hill and Bull Shoals Lake, which was formed by

a dam built in 1951. Follow Highway 62 along the Crooked Creek until you cross the White River into Mountain Home and Lake Norfolk. This area is known for its world-famous fishing resorts. Take Highway 43 to Ponca, then loop around to Highway 7 South to Jasper. This is where you will see what the Buffalo National River National Park has to offer. If a romantic getaway is what you’re looking for, head west on Highway 62 to Eureka Springs and Beaver Lake. Eureka Springs is often called “the little Switzerland of the Ozarks,” because this unique historic community is nestled among beautiful rolling hills.

SAFETY

We see so much crime in the world today, but in Harrison, we proudly say “You won’t find much of that in our small town.” With one of the lowest crime rates in the state, Harrison is one of the safest places you will ever find.

Jerry Jackson Mayor of Harrison, AR

BLAISE AND MARLA Koch

From Entrepreneurs to Retirees, the Kochs Reflect on Their Journey in Harrison

For Blaise and Marla Koch, Harrison, Arkansas, isn’t just a place they live — it’s where they’ve built their lives. The couple, who moved to Harrison decades ago, have found the small town to be the ideal spot for both raising a family and running a business. Today, as they enjoy retirement, they continue to cherish the community they helped shape and the opportunities it has provided.

Roots in Harrison

Blaise’s journey to Harrison started when his parents moved to the town in the late 1970s. His father, who had sold his businesses in Colorado at the age of 47, was drawn to the area’s low cost of living.

“When you move to Arkansas, the cost of living is low.” Blaise said. “Dad didn’t have to work anymore.”

For Blaise, it was the perfect place to settle down. He attended North Arkansas College, where he studied HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning). Upon graduating, Blaise received job offers from major corporations like Sears and Montgomery Ward. However, instead of following the traditional route, he and Marla took a different approach.

“We started our HVAC business in 1980 from scratch,” Blaise recalled, reflecting on the early days of Ozark Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Building a Business and a Family

Blaise, who also had dreams of being a commercial pilot, put those ambitions on hold in favor of building a business and raising a family.

“I thought about being a commercial pilot, but I didn’t want to leave the kids,” he said, emphasizing the importance of

being present for his family.

The Kochs not only grew a successful business, but they also prioritized their children, Blaise Bryan Jr. and Landon, now 29 and 26.

“Our kids were the most important to us, and Harrison was and is a great place to raise a family,” Blaise said.

Marla echoed his sentiments, saying, “Harrison is a great place to raise kids. You can let them play in the front yard. If they’re at school and they want to go to Johnny’s house, it isn’t difficult to find out if Johnny’s house is a safe place.”

Working side by side, Blaise and Marla built their HVAC company into a well-respected local business, and Blaise was especially proud of the people he worked with.

“When I first started, it was just me. Then I hired a service manager who worked with us for over 30 years and ran the service side of the company. Harrison has always proven to be a great place to find quality, hard-working people.”

Retirement and New Ventures

After more than three decades of hard work, the Kochs decided to retire five years ago, selling their business to a private equity group. However, they are not entirely out of the game.

“We’re still involved as consultants,” Blaise explained. Despite stepping back from the day-to-day operations, the couple remains deeply invested in the

community and the business they built.

For the Kochs, retirement has offered the opportunity to explore new interests, including travel. The couple enjoys their plane, which they use for their travels.

“We travel a lot in our retirement,” Blaise said. The couple enjoys the convenience of Harrison’s airport, which they’ve seen grow over the years.

Blaise, who has served as an airport board member on and off for 15 years, pointed to the rapid growth at the airport as an example of Harrison’s evolving economy.

“We’ve had such growth out there. FedEx planes are based out of Harrison,” Blaise noted. The availability of daily flights to major hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth and Memphis has made traveling more convenient than ever.

A Community That Feels Like Home

While the Kochs have made their mark in business, they’ve also established strong ties to the community. They are active members of Crossroads Community Church, where Blaise describes the atmosphere as welcoming and safe.

“I say our church is a safe place, and all are welcome, but I feel the same way about Harrison,” he said.

As they reflect on their years in Harrison, the Kochs are thankful for the opportunities the town has provided — and personally. “It’s a great place to live, to work, and to retire,” Blaise said.

Harrison will always be home, and they’re proud of the legacy they’ve helped build in this thriving community.

ENJOYING OUR CULTURE BY MAKING MEMORIES

Festivals and Events

Bring the Community Together

Harrison is a place where community spirit thrives, and the bond between residents is strengthened through shared experiences. Throughout the year, Harrison comes alive with a variety of festivals and events that make this town a welcoming, vibrant destination for both residents and visitors alike. Whether you’re a longtime local or a newcomer, the events hosted in Harrison provide a true sense of belonging and offer opportunities to create lasting memories.

July 4th Celebration – A Spark of Patriotism

Harrison’s annual July 4th celebration is the town’s signature summer event, drawing thousands of visitors to the picturesque banks of Crooked Creek. This iconic festival is an excellent example of small-town American pride. The streets come alive with a variety of food vendors offering festival favorites and local treasures, while live music fills the air, setting the stage for the grand finale — a fireworks show that is the largest in North Central Arkansas.

Families gather with lawn chairs and blankets, creating a relaxed atmosphere where neighbors and friends can catch up, while the night sky is painted with dazzling displays of color. This community effort exemplifies Harrison’s deep-rooted sense of togetherness and festive spirit.

Scare on the Square –Halloween Fun for All Ages

Each fall, Harrison’s downtown square transforms into a spooky, yet festive scene for Scare on the Square, an event that has quickly become a community favorite. Businesses open their doors to welcome trick-or-treaters of all ages, offering candy and seasonal treats to the young and young at heart. The courthouse yard is filled with games and activities for the kids, and there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to enjoy a delicious snack — whether it’s a bag of popcorn or a refreshing beverage.

With bouncy houses, slides, and plenty of festive decorations, Scare on the Square brings the community together in the most spirited way. It’s a true reflection of Harrison’s dedication to investing in its future generations and fostering a sense of joy and celebration.

Harvest Homecoming – Fall Traditions at Their Finest

When the crisp autumn air rolls in, Harrison celebrates the harvest with the Harvest Homecoming festival. Held each October on the courthouse lawn, this event offers an idyllic fall experience with a vibrant atmosphere that showcases the best of what the season has to offer. From handmade crafts and custom jewelry to fresh apple cider and pumpkin-flavored treats, there is something for everyone.

This all-day festival features a variety of food vendors, so whether you’re craving a funnel cake or a savory walking taco, you’ll find something to satisfy your taste buds. Of course, no trip to Harvest Homecoming would be complete without a refreshing cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade to enjoy as you take in the sights and sounds of the season.

Hot Air Balloon Races – A Skyward Celebration

Every September, Harrison’s skies become a canvas for the brilliant colors of hot air balloons at the annual Arkansas Hot Air Balloon Race. This three-day event is a feast for the eyes, and one of the highlights is the Friday night Balloon Glow, where the balloons light up the dark sky in a breathtaking display. Visitors can also take in the beauty of the event from the air with helicopter rides or even rides in the hot air balloons themselves.

In addition to the balloon festivities, there’s live music, a petting zoo for the kids, and an exciting Key Grab competition. It’s a perfect blend of entertainment, adventure, and

community spirit, making it a must-see event for anyone in the region.

Christmas Parade – A Holiday Tradition

As the holiday season kicks off, the Monday after Thanksgiving marks a special occasion for the residents of Harrison — the annual Christmas Parade. This festive tradition sees the streets filled with families and friends eager to enjoy the glimmering floats, antique cars, and marching bands. The parade is a celebration of the community’s spirit, featuring everything from stunningly decorated floats to the latest farm equipment and fire trucks, which never fail to delight the crowd.

As the floats wind their way through town, children eagerly collect candy tossed from the parade participants. The Christmas Parade is a beautiful reminder of Harrison’s warm, welcoming atmosphere and is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

Spring Festivals, Food and Markets

Spring heralds the return of local farmers’ markets. Debuting in April on the south and east sides of the downtown square in Harrison, the market showcases locally grown and produced foods, as well as unique, artisan-made goods. With free hot coffee, crafts for kids and prize drawings, there’s something to please everyone.

Festivals are in full bloom with events like the Cave Region Music and Art Festival on the Pioneer Pavilion at North Arkansas College, featuring live music, art displays, free food and door prizes, as well as artist vendor booths to peruse.

The Crawdad Days Festival kicks off May at the Northwest Arkansas District Fairground. Enjoy a car show to the sounds of live music or head over to shop the many craft and retail vendors. Register early for the Crawdad Days 5K Walk/Run

and then stop by the carnival or petting zoo to top off a funfilled day at the festival.

Sports and County Fairs –Celebrating the Best of Rural America

Harrison also holds a special place in the heart of sports enthusiasts and fairgoers alike. From March through August, the city hosts national baseball and softball tournaments, attracting teams from across the country. These tournaments bring the community together and offer an exciting way for athletes to showcase their skills on Harrison’s top-tier fields. Harrison is also a regular host for state and regional sports tournaments, reinforcing the city’s commitment to youth sports development.

In September, Harrison plays host to two exciting county fairs — the Boone County Fair and the Northwest Arkansas District Fair. Both events provide an excellent opportunity for local youth to showcase their talents in everything from artwork and crafts to livestock and canned goods. With games, rides, and plenty of fair food, these events are a nostalgic celebration of rural traditions.

EXPLORE HARRISONS VIBRANT CULINARY SCENE:

FROM FARM-TO-TABLE DELIGHTS TO POPULAR CHAIN FAVORITES

There is no shortage of delicious eateries around Harrison. For the busy family wanting to grab something quick and head to the park or a ball game, there is a wide variety of food trucks offering everything from pizza, barbecue, and unique sandwiches to unbelievable burgers, all locally owned and operated.

An interesting fact about Harrison’s restaurants is that several locally owned and operated establishments now have second- and third-generation family members entering the business. The original quality and attention to detail are being passed down for future customers to enjoy for years to come.

Neighbor’s Mill originated in Harrison in 2000 and has expanded its franchise to Springfield, Missouri. The out-of-state license plates in the parking lot are proof that many people make it a point to come to Harrison for a meal made with the freshest hand-crafted breads, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. The

original “fancy” coffee place still leaves customers satisfied with a great taste of “joe” and, of course, an appetizing oversized muffin to accompany their favorite hot or cold brew.

Jamie’s is another Harrison original that has expanded its franchise to Berryville and Mountain Home. The menu combines fresh seafood with Ozark

favorites, such as fried bacon, chicken-fried steak, and a pork loin sandwich that hangs off a large dinner plate. Chef Jamie Akers has used his Florida upbringing and classical training to delight even the pickiest eaters. The fresh strawberry salad is requested at many of his catered events.

Jamie’s has expanded his brand to

Buckets, which serves alcohol and finger foods, such as brisket tacos, boneless wings, and cheese sticks. There is usually a game on one of the big screens or boot-scootin’ music guaranteed to rally the appetite.

The 1915 Café & Bakery, located downtown, is a second location for Lillihobbs Mercantile, on Hwy. 65 North. Sit down for their famous breakfasts or lunches, or swing by and grab a bakery treat to satisfy your sweet tooth.

When a little snack is needed, Boba Joe’s Bubble Tea, fresh cookies, and artisan ice cream will hit the spot. Also on the downtown square is Neno’s, which offers a great place to have a beer and light, delicious food in a cozy atmosphere.

Six Sisters Crepes is a unique dining experience with sweet, meaty, or breakfast crepes on the menu, along with blended coffees to satisfy any coffee drinker. The downtown location also offers a drive-thru for quick orders on the go.

The Town House Cafe, farmer-owned and supplied with locally raised meats, serves up an unbeatable atmosphere in addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner. From omelets and hotcakes to burgers, soups and tamales, you’re guaranteed to

order something good every time.

If the gang can’t decide on what they are hungry for, Western Sizzlin’s all-youcan-eat food bars offer more than 100 dishes. They also specialize in cooking to order fresh steaks and hot rolls that are sure to satisfy.

The Ranch House is a staple for locals, offering everything from homemade biscuits and gravy to turkey and dressing. Chef Bobby Lineberger loves to take care of hungry people.

Colton’s Steakhouse is known for its great steaks, chicken, salads, and famous appetizers. Even though it is a chain, it is a staple “hometown” restaurant for the area. Guests are served fresh peanuts in the shell while they peruse the menu, because it can be difficult to decide.

If one desires a nice sit-down meal, complete with tablecloths and flowers, we have those options, too. DeVito’s Restaurant features fresh home-grown trout from the Trout Farm at Bear Creek Springs, located across the road from the restaurant. Pasta dishes made from family recipes passed down for generations will make any special meal or celebration even better.

T’s BBQ is located just on the other side of Crooked Creek in downtown Har-

rison. The menu satisfies cravings for beef, chicken, or pork, with homemade sauces ranging from sweet to medium to spicy. USA-raised catfish, hush puppies, and fried pies are served on limited days, so pick your days to visit carefully.

If you’re headed down Hwy. 7 South, it’s a must that you stop at the Daisy Queen. Delicious breakfast, burgers, and down-home cookin’ better than your grandma ever made. “Sunday-style” meals are served every day of the week.

All of these restaurants have unbelievable desserts, but if you desire something truly unique, a stop at Sweet Honey is a must. The famous “shakes” come in 16-ounce Mason jars with the edges rolled in sweet caramels, chocolate, granola, or whatever the shake flavor calls for.

This community also has local owners serving Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, and Cajun cuisine. If you prefer to stop at national chains, we have those too: Dairy Queen, Burger King, Sonic, Taco Bell, McDonald’s, and lots of great pizza places.

Make sure to come to Harrison, Arkansas, while you’re hungry! We will feed you so well that you’ll want to move here!

JOEY

Luker

Enjoy

your

lunch at Fender Vendors Food Park

“I couldn’t compare anything to Harrison. I love it here. It’s easy living, it’s comfortable, it’s beautiful. I couldn’t ask for a better place to live.”

Starting a business is always stressful, but it should be fun and made easier by the support of the local community. Just ask Joey Luker, owner of Fender Vendors Food Park, whose passion and work ethic are clear. Established in 2023 and located downtown, the park brings fun and delicious options for foodies of all ages. Joey brings over 20 years of food and restaurant management experience, in addition to his ardent drive, to continue to build a fresh dining experience for the citizens of Harrison, and he’s proud of what he and the owners of each food truck are doing.

¨What we’re trying to create… we’re really early. We’re the first ones downtown to try to redo something that’s been dormant. I have four food trucks now. The owners are providing for their families and themselves…These people are able to own their own businesses and live their dreams without having to spend [tens of thousands] in order to do it.¨

What started as a part-time passion project quickly became a full-time job. ¨It was never meant to be a steady stream of income, it was something to do for fun, something to [bring something new to] the downtown community of Harrison.¨

Joey continues to build upon and improve the property, but he never misses an opportunity to talk about the hard work and

dedication the food truck owners put in to building and maintaining their individual businesses. ¨[Managing a food truck] is totally different but the same at the same time. The micro management of a food truck is unreal. Give them credit, because they do so much with prep, pricing, storage — having enough to serve customers but not so much that too much space is used…that takes skill.”

Joey also is outspokenly happy with the support of downtown business owners, the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, and the local government. He feels strongly that this support is unique to the area and that city ordinances, rules, and guidelines are clear, fair, and easily accessible. Joey is proud to be a small business owner in “such a closeknit community,” and believes it’s a great place to start a business and raise a family.

“It’s amazing. It’s fun. It’s stressful doing your own thing, but it’s your own stress, not corporate stress.”

Joey and his wife, a local school teacher, became permanent residents of the area in 2008. They have three children who were all born in Harrison and love being proud Goblins. “I couldn’t compare anything to Harrison. I love it here. It’s easy living, it’s comfortable, it’s beautiful. Harrison is full of activities

The City of Harrison is committed to its citizens as it plans ahead for the future.

The individuals employed within the city government love the city and will do anything they can, working together, to benefit the residents and businesses of the community.

With a progressive nature, Harrison has always had an eye for the future trends of city growth. The latest evidence of this is the transformation of an old high school into a state of the art recreational facility.

Creekside Community Center is a gem for Harrison. Every recreational need that a family can want is found at Creekside.

There are two full E-gaming rooms that are designed for those that enjoy competing. The rooms can host E-gaming tournaments.

Is pickleball your jam? Creekside has you covered. Need to shoot some hoops? Creekside has three basketball courts.

Are you way behind on your 10,000 steps for the day? Not a problem, Creekside has you covered with indoor walking trails.

Are the kids driving you crazy with so much energy? Visit the swimming pool and let them play all day.

Creekside, which got its name from its location on Crooked Creek, is just the beginning of the benefits that the city will receive after citizens approved a bond election.

Harrison is just completing a downtown beautification project that has updated city lights, added trees that will provide color in the fall and additional seating for visitors.

The city is full of growth with new medical facilities and housing projects around every corner.

Harrison has a population of more than 13,000 residents, however the city has a feel for being much larger than it is. The charming, hometown atmosphere has never been lost as the town grows.

History is around every corner in Harrison. There is a walking tour of the downtown historic Harrison that points out many pieces of the history of the city. One piece of history that can be found in Harrison is of notorious bank robber Henry Starr, who met his demise in Harrison when he robbed a bank and the bank president shot him.

During the summer, one of the hot spots to cool down is at the city splash pad. The splash pad is part of the city parks and is located in the middle of a handicap-accessible playground.

The playground is full of equipment to entertain young ones. There is a ship-themed area that can bring out the pirate in the youth as they slide and climb over the colorful play space, as well as equipment for small children to upper elementary aged students.

Under the bridge from the splash pad is the Minnie Harris Park. It has an amphitheater for concerts and programs. The Minnie Harris Park also has a pavilion that can be rented for family or company gatherings.

Picnic tables are available in the many other parks located throughout the city.

There are two large sports complexes located in the city as well. One complex houses the soccer fields for the city. Located along the banks of Crooked Creek, this quality facility has been selected many times to host the Arkansas Activities Association state soccer tournaments.

The baseball and softball complexes have quality fields that have hosted Arkansas state tournaments as well. Rainouts are not often as the complex offers artificial turfs on many fields, as well as providing natural grass fields.

Residents have the opportunities to play in city leagues. There are softball and ragball leagues. Maybe a person likes being in the kitchen in the pickleball league. Basketball and co-ed volleyball leagues also round out the competitive landscape of the town. There are several leagues for the youngsters. A future star has the opportunity to play in five recreational leagues through the city of Harrison.

Harrison’s roads are also increasingly equipped with bike lanes.

When out on two wheels, North Arkansas College has a mountain bike course for riders. The course is 1.6 miles in length and wanders through magnificent hardwood trees and fields. There are some gradual climbs on the course as well as some steep inclines.

Harrison has a trail for running and biking that reaches downtown too. A 3.2 mile long trail starts near the city soccer complex and works its way along Crooked Creek. The trail takes visitors into the historic downtown area before looping them back to complete the entire 3.2 miles.

The trail offers shorter distances for those without the time or wanting to do 3.2 miles. There is a half-mile circle and a quarter of a mile down and back from different parking lots in the complex. No matter what the recreational desire, Harrison offers a variety of options to get out and play.

BUILD STRONGER BONDS: DISCOVER THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH LOCAL SERVICE BUSINESSES, NON-PROFITS, AND VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

A Heart of Service: Harrison’s Commitment to Community and Care

Harrison, Arkansas, is a place where the spirit of service runs deep. Known for its giving heart, the community of Harrison is committed to supporting its residents through a range of philanthropic organizations, each dedicated to making a positive impact. Whether through emergency assistance, shelter, or support services, Harrison provides vital resources to those in need, offering a helping hand to individuals and families facing tough times.

Ozark Share & Care: A Lifeline for Those in Need

One of Harrison’s cornerstone philanthropic organizations is Ozark Share & Care, a non-profit emergency services program that has been serving the community since 1987. This vital organization provides emergency food to anyone in need, regardless of geographic location, and offers a range of other services such as clothing, household items, bedding, and furniture (as available).

Though some services are limited to Boone County residents,

Ozark Share & Care goes above and beyond, with a flexible approach to eligibility requirements. The organization ensures that assistance is provided to those who truly need it, without the burden of rigid income qualifications.

Each month, Ozark Share & Care provides food for an average of 750 or more households at a cost of over $14,000. These funds are raised through donations, the sale of items in their retail thrift store, and generous contributions from local individuals, businesses, and organizations. Not only does this organization serve its community, but it also fosters a sense of connection, as many donations come from local donors and businesses. The thrift store is a key source of funding for the organization, ensuring that essential services can continue without relying on government grants or public funding.

Harrison House of Hope: A Shelter for the Homeless and Unemployed

Another important organization in Harrison is Harrison House of Hope, dedicated to providing services for homeless, near-homeless, and unemployed individuals. The House of Hope strives to meet the immediate needs of these individuals while also offering a support system designed to help them reach their potential. The mission is clear — to offer a safe space, support, and a path forward for those struggling to find stability.

Sanctuary and Hope Cottages: Empowering Women in Need

Harrison also provides essential services for women through Sanctuary, Inc. and Hope Cottages, two facilities offering vital support for women in crisis.

Sanctuary, Inc. is dedicated to providing safe, temporary shelter for victims of domestic violence. In addition to emergency shelter, Sanctuary offers support services, education, advocacy,

and outreach. The organization plays a vital role in raising public awareness about family violence and abuse, and works diligently to provide resources for those seeking to escape abusive situations. Sanctuary promotes a collective effort to prevent family violence and ensure that individuals are protected from harm. Hope Cottages is another pillar of support for women in Harrison, offering a safe environment for mothers and their children. The facility focuses on helping residents develop self-sufficiency and empowerment by working with them to set goals and providing the resources needed to achieve them. Hope Cottages’ mission is to ensure that each resident leaves with the skills and confidence to create a better future for themselves and their families. Through love, respect, and guidance, Hope Cottages fosters hope and provides the tools needed for women to thrive. Revovery Center of the Ozarks: Lighting the Pathways of Hope

Recovery takes a community, and for those who need a light on the journey out of substance abuse, Recovery Center of the Ozarks illuminates those pathways, enabling individuals to reclaim their lives and re-engage in society. Empowerment and community service shape the recovery plan, as well as focusing on all dimensions of well-being to build toward hope.

A Community of Volunteers

Harrison’s spirit of service extends beyond organizations — it’s in the hands of the many volunteers who offer their time and skills to help others. Whether it’s through helping with food distribution, providing shelter, or offering emotional support, volunteers are the heart and soul of these community organizations. As Harrison continues to grow, the need for dedicated volunteers remains vital. These volunteers make a real difference, changing lives and providing hope to those who need it most.

A City That Cares

Harrison’s commitment to service is a testament to the city’s sense of community and generosity. From Ozark Share & Care to Sanctuary and Hope Cottages, these organizations — and the countless individuals who support them — ensure that Harrison remains a place where people come together to make a meaningful impact. Whether you’re new to the area or a longtime resident, you’ll find a city that’s not only welcoming but also dedicated to meeting the needs of everyone who calls Harrison home.

For those considering relocation, Harrison’s strong network of community support is just one of the many reasons to call this vibrant, giving town home.

Care You Can Count On

Helping one person at a time in Harrison

What do social work, family-centric therapy, and cycling have in common? Meet Kris Anderson and his wife, Veronica (Roni) Combs, co-owners and founders of Counseling and Family Therapy Center and Psych Bike in downtown Harrison. The pair met at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, where they both received their Master’s Degrees in Social Work. In 2009, they moved to Harrison. At the time, the area was seriously lacking in mental health care, and Kris and Roni were quick to fill the void with the full support of local leadership. Even better? In Harrison, they were given the freedom to do it with their own unique spin.

“The bike shop is just kind of an extension of the therapy clinic, and it started out as folks who didn’t have insurance or didn’t want a medical record or anything like that. I guess you could call it ‘life  coaching,’ but I’m actually a licensed professional,” Kris humbly adds. “So any of the folks that don’t want [a traditional counseling environment], they come and they do it through Psych Bike, and we call it ‘life coaching.’ I’m a therapist, so we use the same ethics and guidelines. We just don’t bill insurance, and we don’t do medical records.” In addition to their traditional therapy clinic, they’ve built a NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) Team, the Buffalo Riders, and continue to work with local government and leadership to build a state-of-the-art bike trail through the natural beauty the area boasts.

“We call it a ‘practice in gratitude.’ It keeps us humble. It gives us a vision and a direction that we’re headed towards. I’m a big believer in WHY we do things. This is a good reminder of why we have a bike shop, and why we have a therapy clinic, and why it’s good to work with the community.” Kris cannot say enough about how easy it was to integrate into the community of Harrison. “I think Harrison is an excellent place for entrepreneurship. The city council and the community are supportive. I ran into no problems.” Clearly, Harrison aligns with the values that Kris and Roni bring to the table.

“We’ve learned that it’s how you treat people, and it’s one person at a time. In a community like Harrison, you can do that. We’re literally a ‘mom and pop shop,’ but [the chamber of commerce and the city government] treat us like we’re Wabash or Walmart. We might as well be FedEx, because we get treated the same.” Opportunity flourishes with a small-town feel, and entrepreneurship is the heartbeat of Harrison.

Always remember to dial 9-1-1 in a medical emergency.

employment

YOU WILL QUICKLY SAY, ‘I LOVE MY JOB.’

employment

Boone County enjoys thriving job market, economic growth

The City of Harrison’s CFO, Luke Feighert, explained, “Over the last 10 years, our sales tax base has grown over 50%. But it’s a healthy growth that has been maintained year over year with no slowdown in sight. We have had an upward trajectory for over 20 years, but the last five years have taken off. The growth has allowed the City to reinvest into the community things we dreamed about many years ago. We are ecstatic we can now make them happen.”

The area’s workforce is a sought-after commodity when it comes to manufacturing and soft skills. People in this area are hard workers who know how to get to work and do a job.

Local schools continue to focus on soft skills to ensure that each graduating class is prepared for their choice of job markets or for continuing their education at a higher level. With dual college credits being offered at the high school level, as well as apprenticeships, some seniors graduate with a high school diploma and also a two-year certificate in a trade where they have already been employed.

The state and local institutions have spent a lot of money making sure the next generation will be able to step into the workboots of those approaching retirement age.

Wilson Marseilles, formerly the President/CEO of the Chamber and currently with Edward Jones Investments, said, “From an economic perspective, I find my focus drawn to the companies headquartered here that are doing business across the country. Harrison is strong in both, from big companies like FedEx Freight to small family operations like Cavender’s Greek Seasoning.”

He continued, “I’m also encouraged by the type of investment Harrison businesses have attracted from the private equity sector. Private equity groups often have a reputation for buying companies, stripping them of everything that isn’t productive, moving operations out of communities for various reasons, and then trying to sell for a profit. In the last five years, Claridge and Johnson Manufacturing (a couple of our homegrown family-owned companies) were acquired by private equity firms. But instead of closing shop and stripping

for parts, they have doubled down in Harrison because of our strong culture of hard work and our location in North Central Arkansas.”

Job opportunities span a wide range of careers. Several locally owned and operated, successful medical practices are looking for med school graduates because they need someone to succeed them. Dentists, doctors, and other medical professionals seek individuals to come to Harrison, experience the quality of life, and decide to stay.

The area has a vast array of manufacturers, from oversized fiberglass containers that are trucked all over the United States to storage tanks and vessels uniquely designed to hold everything from dangerous chemicals to spicy salsa. Cardboard shipping containers are made in Harrison. The next container of sweet desserts could have been designed and printed here.

High-end men’s leather goods and caps for toothpaste products are manufactured in Boone County. Claridge continues to lead the industry in what started as a company that offered “chalkboards.” Their growth and expansion with technology allow them to still offer classroom products, but now with computer technology built right in. A trucking company, which started from the need to get these products around the states, still has corporate offices in Harrison and ships various products to both coasts of the States.

Harrison makes parts for high-end vehicles, barbecue grills, and appliances, as well as metal caps for parking lot fixtures.

Plastic injection molding is another important manufacturer for the area. Plastic five-gallon buckets with “big box store logos” to plastic Easter Eggs used

around the world are manufactured here. The durable plastic portion of a shopping cart has also been known to be manufactured locally.

Another international company has stayed busy in Harrison by manufacturing beautiful wood flooring for semitruck trailers. The local employees’ knowledge of woodworking has continued to set the Harrison plant apart from others.

As Marseilles mentioned, Cavender’s Greek Seasoning can be found in kitchen cabinets and on restaurant tables all over the world. The smell of the unique seasoning recipe can be enjoyed immediately upon entering the front door. Semi-trailer loads of various spices are delivered each week and turn around and head out the door a day or two later as little yellow canisters or the no-salt blue canisters of Cavender’s, which taste good on everything.

All of these hard workers need places to buy groceries, clothes, trucks, and cars and eat at restaurants, so the cycle continues. Many of these 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. laborers go home to their farms and provide the beef, pork, chicken, and turkey the area is also known for. So their work day continues late into the evening in all types of weather — but they love what they do.

Area leaders do their best to provide places like the Creekside Community Center, Anstaff Soccer Fields, the Equity Bank Baseball, Softball Complex, the Burlsworth Youth Center, bike trails, and walking and running trails, so families and individuals will want to move here, purchase a home, have an interesting career, and raise a family in some of the state’s top-rated public schools. Welcome to the Ozarks — a little something for everyone.
