EATING MACHINES THAT THRIVE IN COOLER WATERS
The fall feeding frenzy has been ongoing for a while now. The next season is showing its face on those cooler days, and those winter patterns are sure to be in force shortly. If you think fishing slows down during the winter sea son, it does not!
BY MICHAEL ACOSTA Contributing writer
Striped bass anglers know that the winter months are a great time to fish for our landlocked striped bass. These eating machines thrive in the cooler water and when they decide to feed, they gorge themselves. When you clean these fish in the winter, they are typically so obese that their insides are lined with fat and their stomach is usually packed with baitfish.
These fish, in my opinion, will be in the healthiest condition of the year. Weight per length is at a higher ratio due to this feeding, and the stripers are also starting to develop their eggs and silt for the spawn the following spring.
Granted, as cold-blooded creatures, fish in general have metabolic rates that slow in the winter. However, the striped bass are most active when water tempera tures are in the 50s to 60s. When water temperatures fall into the 40s, feeding may slow more but that is much later in winter. When the water temperatures fall down to the low 40s, feeding will occur less often but they will continue to feed in “spurts” — gorging themselves when they do.
The cool mornings and the passing cool fronts are dropping area lake tempera tures into the 60s. The winter patterns I use typically start below the 60-degree mark.
The cooler mornings will also have the fish feeding, with the birds pointing you to active fish. Chasing birds can be some of the most exciting, fast and furious action to be had. When the fish are very active, you cannot miss. Almost any shad imitation bait will work. Just make sure you match what they are feeding on.
Striped bass can be easier to catch in the winter if you can locate them. Some days, they may travel miles, and this may require you to travel as well. Soon, there will be a migration of the bigger striped bass to the upper ends of the reservoir. Usually after the first freeze, which is typically the end of November, you will be able to find these fish on schools of bait that move upstream looking for warmer and shallower waters.
Later in the winter season, the warmest water may be on the bottom in deep water. Look for these changes by looking with your electronics to see what depth the majority of the baitfish are holding. The warmer days in the winter may have them moving up with the bait fish of course.
Chasing river run striped bass is hard to beat for action. Above Lake Whitney is probably the best river fishing for striped bass closest to Granbury. Lake Texo ma’s striped bass will either run west on the Red River or north on the Washita. These fish are fairly predictable; you just have to learn to locate them. Remember to dress in layers and overdress if possi ble. Stay warm! A cold day on the water can be fun if you are dressed right. Many folks use those inexpensive chemical warmers in their gloves or boots to keep warm. Once you start catching fish, you won’t be cold anymore.

LA NIÑA THREE-PEAT
his is Texas, and if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” The old saying proves to be true in every season. So what are the chances of bad weather dominating this winter? The Brazos River Authority recently published information on this topic. It’s rare to see a fourth year of La Niña. So as we close out year three, let’s look at what that could mean for the Brazos River basin.
“T
Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon suggests that the weather could go either way. “There’s still room to im prove this drought,” he said. “And, looking longer-term, we’ve never seen a fourth year of La Niña, so cross your fingers.”
With La Niña conditions forecasted for this fall and winter, drought is expected to increase in the coming months. Aaron Abel, BRA Water Services Manager said, “Below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures have been the case over the last month. October is typically our second wettest month of the year for the Brazos River basin in terms of monthly rain fall.” (According to wunderground.com, October 2022 rain fall was 1.58 inches, well below what is typical for that time of year.)
Will she or won’t she? TYPICAL WINTER LA NIÑA PATTERN
WHAT IS LA NIÑA?
La Niña is a weather pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean every few years. In a normal year, winds along the equator push warm water westward. Warm water at the surface of the ocean blows from South America to Indonesia. As the warm water moves west, cold water from the deep rises to the surface. This cold water ends up on the coast of South America.
La Niña tends to increase Atlantic hurricane season activity. Win ters tend to be drier through the southern tier of the U.S. and can lead to or intensify drought conditions, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They are even linked to more fre quent spring hailstorms and tornadoes in the south-central U.S.
This past summer, some areas of Texas saw extreme high tempera tures, with many consecutive days over 100 degrees. In late August, large portions of the state received much-needed rainfall, enough to cause some counties to lift their burn bans.
But could fall showers push us out of drought conditions, or is the drought likely to continue?
Nielsen-Gammon says, “La Niña has at least a few more months before it runs its course. According to the Climate Prediction Center, it will almost certainly last through the end of the year and probably survive into the spring.”

Christmas safety tips
While you’re out shopping or traveling during the holidays, re member to keep in mind these basic Christmas safety tips.
LOCK EVERYTHING
This seems obvious, but more often than you would expect a burglar gets into a house just because something was left open or unlocked, especially with house guests visiting who may not have keys. Don’t forget to lock your vehicles and do not keep valuables in them at night.
SECURE VALUABLES
Never leave anything of value out in plain sight. If you have not already done so, now may be a good time to consider placing any jewelry, extra cash or other valuables in a safe deposit box or
even a secure hidden safe within the house. Nothing should ever be visible from any window and the master bedroom is the first room any intruder will check for valuables.
CONTROL YOUR SOCIAL STATUS
Though you might be tempted to broadcast to the world about how excited you are for your holiday travels or Black Friday shop ping sprees, resist the urge to broadcast to the whole world that you are not going to be home. Many people cannot seem to wait to let everyone on Facebook or Twitter know that they are about to leave and this is a dangerous thing to share.
LEAVE THE LIGHT ON
Not the most eco-friendly advice, but the more it looks like someone is home, the less likely that someone will try to intrude on your home. Keep the lights on, the Christmas lights lit, and

WINTER GOLFING
Tips for playing through the winter
For some, golf is a fair-weather sport. Hitting the links in shirt sleeves and shorts, enjoying a cold beverage and watching the ball fly through a clear sky over perfectly trimmed greens is all part of the joy of golf.
And then here comes December, January and February. In North Texas the average high temperature in December is 60 degrees F. In January, it’s 57, and in February, 61. Too cold to play? While it’s not for everyone, some golfers just toughen up and play through the winter.
BEFORE YOU TEE OFF
BY JAY ANN COX Contributing writer
n Dress in layers. Now is the time to use those activewear compression pieces you bought to stay warm.
n Double up on socks, add some hand warmers for your pockets and don’t forget a warm hat.
n A golf cart enclosure and a propane heater can make your ride almost cozy.
n Better yet – dust off the push cart and walk. Many cold-weather golfers know that good old-fashioned walking will keep the blood pumping to extremities.
PLAYING IN THE COLD
n Balls don’t fly as far through colder air so if your game changes, it may be partially due to simple physics.
n Fairways and greens are often harder due to temperature changes, which will cause the ball to bounce more.
n On the other hand, winter rains can make some areas of the course wetter which also will affect ball movement.
STAY IN SHAPE
Cold-weather golfing not your thing? You can still do off-season conditioning when it’s just too cold for golf.
n Yoga, Pilates and other stretching routines can help keep you flexible and can even improve range of motion and core strength.
n Working with free weights, kettlebells or weight machines will improve strength in targeted muscle groups and help with overall stamina.
n Cross-training in winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding and skating, is not only fun but will be great cardio throughout the cold season.
n Biking, outside or inside, is good cardio and improves leg strength.
PLAY GOLF INDOORS
Don’t lose muscle memory over the winter. Keep your skills sharp by breaking down your technique and practicing indoors.
n Use specialized equipment to isolate and develop different skills. Foam balls, putting strips, swing aids and all kinds of other gadgets are available. Set up an area in your house to practice putting, swinging and chipping. If you are determined to stay in shape, it’s worth a try.
n The metroplex has places like 1611 Indoor Golf Club, just off I-20 and 377, where you play a full round on one of their virtual courses, prac tice your swing or putt. Take the family and treat them to the wings, big screens and the arcade while you play.
Of course, if you are one of the lucky ones, you already have plans for winter travel to a sunny, warm destination that has a top-notch golf course.
