any people move to Lake Gaston for a slowerpaced lifestyle. Its rural setting offers peace and quiet for those who seek it, but also watersports, clubs and other activities for residents interested in maintaining an active lifestyle. Nancy Moorefield relocated with her husband, Bodie, to Lake Gaston’s Tanglewood Shores subdivision in Bracey, Va., nine years ago from Cumberland County, Va. After retiring t year n t e field o dentistry, Nancy has found joy in sharing the area’s natural beauty as she sees it through the lens of her Canon Powershot SC70. Regular readers of LakeLife magazine will recognize Nancy’s photos, which have appeared in every issue for years, as well as the Lake Gaston GazetteObserver newspaper. Her favorite subjects are those in nature, especially birds, o er and t e oon, all taken from her backyard or somewhere in Tanglewood Shores. Bodie gave Nancy her fir t ca era a Canon o er ot C a a retirement gift. t a t e fir t t e ad ever taken a picture except with my cell phone,” Nancy said. LAKELIFE 2022

She wore that camera out. And a second one. Nancy said that her former boss, friend and birdwatcher, Dr. Timothy Marshall, a dentist in ar lle, a , e ted t at M Nancy t e atr arc o o fice et a ca era e a o fice ana er, and t ey t ll ee n touch. He recently ID’d a bird for her that is rarely seen in this part of the country, yet she captured a photo of it feeding in her backyard. Retirement didn’t come easy for her, Nancy said. She was used to staying busy and thought e o ld find e loy ent a ter e and od e downsized from a 40-acre farm in Cumberland County, Va., to their modest Lake Gaston home. There were no dental jobs nearby, so she commuted to Farmville, Va., for a number of years and did contract work for the Coast Guard in Yorktown, Va., for a few years before her “real retire8

Now, with her 75th birthday coming this year, Nancy has traded the busyness of running dental o fice or t e eren ty o rd atc n , otographing nature from her sunporch, and what she describes as therapeutic tending of the co ntle erenn al o er n ne , e , and other plants in her shaded front and back yards. “I’ve always had a green thumb,” Nancy said. That’s a good thing, since she described her yard a not n en t e Moorefield o ed to the lake. A pergola that Bodie built is a central feature in the backyard, complete with a swing, fan and l t n , o er n ne , and a co ered to to keep out the rain. There’s also a special place for a memorial garden for Nancy’s daughter, Melissa Spillman,

Many of the pieces, she said, were Mother’s Day gifts from her son, T. W. Spillman, Jr. The backyard also includes an old red telephone booth that Bodie added, which can be seen from the golf course. Though Bodie hasn’t yet retired, he helps Nancy with landscaping projects and has a small raised bed for growing what Nancy calls his obsession: hot peppers. “My husband has worked very hard in this yard,” Nancy said. “It’s nothing for me to plant Nancy Moorefield created the memorial garden for her a tree somewhere, and two years later I’ll say, daughter, Melissa Spillman, who passed away from cystic ‘This tree’s not working here,’ and he’ll dig it up fi rosis shortly efore her th irthday. For people who don’t know what to do with their yards, Nancy suggests they start small, pay attention to how much (or little) sun they get, as well as what type of soil they have. “I only plant perennials. Maybe start with hostas and build out, depending on your space and sun,” she said. “What might do well for one, may not work for someone else.” She keeps starter plants in pots on the side of her house, and she enjoys sharing with others. “I love giving plants away,” Nancy said. The best advice she has for landscape novices: Start small and don’t overdo. Over the past month, Nancy said she has ca t red any oto ra o o er n her backyard from the wicker rocking chair in her sunroom. It’s a comfortable nature lover’s perch, where she can also appreciate wildlife, and freeze time in single images, through the viewscreen of her digital camera. Just focus and click. For people who want to try their hand at photography, Nancy suggests starting simple. “Buy a camera that’s not expensive with auto-zoom and see how you adjust to it,” she said. And for avid bird watchers, she suggests a camera like the one she uses, rather than binoculars, as it allows her to zoom in and

Park Superintendent Kelley King said that today’s mountain is the highest point in North Carolina east of Interstate 85. “It is a volcanic bubble or ‘belly’ that never burst, resulting in a granite and quartz mountain,” she said. “We have several plants that would normally be found further west, such as mountain laurel and wild ginger.” While volcanic activity shaped Medoc Mountain State Park’s ancient past, winemaking and agriculture shaped its more recent history.
