nimal lovers often become enchanted with unusual creatures seen on social media and video feeds. There are so many different species of exotic animals sold in the pet trade, many of which have no business becoming household pets. It is hard to believe that I could search the internet today and in no time at all buy a tiger, zebra or even a cobra, all without a permit.

species in this article we see in our practice that often turn out to be bad choices for many pet owners. These animals should only be kept by the few special individuals who have the commitment to provide proper, long-term care. I may receive criticism for saying this, but I believe most, if not all, exotic animal species should not be owned as pets. The animals often end up as the losers in the relationship.

Acquiring any pet, especially an exotic animal, should never be an impulsive decision.

Extensive research, planning and thought is essential before taking on this responsibility.

It is so unfair for any animal to receive less than ideal care and attention. Too many times unusual pets are purchased without consideration for their special diets, housing needs and what size they become as adults. Wild animals may seem “cool” to own, but they often end up with improper care and ultimately abandoned after their novelty fades. The thrill of ownership wears off and the pet becomes a burden or too difficult to care for. I will mention just a few

Macaw parrots are among one of the more striking species of birds on the planet. They are not only beautiful but are also highly intelligent creatures. They can live almost a century if cared for properly.

Thus, they will likely outlive their owners. In the wild they fly twenty or more miles per day socializing and searching for food. In captivity they are not allowed to fly and often are deprived of adequate social interaction.

the life the bird deserves. A captive life often results in behavioral problems including feather picking from boredom, destructive behaviors and excessive vocalization. The neighbors of macaw owners often complain that the bird’s booming voices can be heard a half mile away.

Over seventy-five percent of large parrots are re-homed or relinquished to bird sanctuaries by their original owners. Novice bird owners often don’t know what they are getting into when purchasing one of these beautiful creatures.

They not only require a nutritious diet but need abundant social interactions for their mental health. Leaving them alone for most of the day is unfair for a bird used to being a member of a social group.

Green iguanas are a common lizard species sold in many pet shops. As babies they are cute and colorful. They require very specific diets, temperatures and exposure to proper ultraviolet light in order

to stay healthy. Many of these poor guys end up with bone disease in captivity because their metabolic needs are not met. More than half of baby pet iguanas die in their first year of life due to poor care. If they are lucky enough to receive good care they grow rapidly and require very large enclosures as adults. The adults are often given up if they become aggressive or too large to care for. Cute little lizard can become a junior Godzilla.

Sulcata tortoises are native to Africa but have become a popular species in the pet reptile trade. They are a relatively inexpensive and available at most reptile shows. The juveniles are cute and have friendly personalities. They also become voracious eaters and can grow to more than one

hundred pounds. The larger tortoises must be kept outdoors during the warmer months in a secure yard. They will eat most plants in their yards and can dig deep burrows. They must be fed large quantities of healthy vegetables and have exposure to sunshine to remain healthy.

The cute babies become tanks with legs and eating machines. People contemplating buying a baby Sulcata must consider what this tortoise will grow into and whether the animal’s needs can be met.

Pot-bellied and mini pigs are adorable little babies that we often see on television. They are friendly, social and intelligent animals.

However, they grow quickly into much larger adults than the breeders lead on to at the time of purchase. Pigs are highly motivated by food, grow rapidly and are often one hundred pounds heavier full grown than expected. What started out as a relatively small house pet has now become barnyard livestock that can no longer live indoors. Without a large, fenced yard to live in, the owner has no choice but take their pig to an animal shelter or livestock sale barn. Owners again often do not realize what a five-pound “miniature” piglet can grow into.

These are just a few of the nontraditional pets we see in veterinary hospitals that do not make ideal, long-term pets. So many other species can be added to the “poor pet list” like exotic cats, large constricting snakes, wolves and monkeys. Without exception, they all should be illegal for the average citizen to own. So often it is the animal that will be subjected to sub-standard care, abuse or abandonment when the animal becomes difficult to care for. These animals deserve to live free in the wild and for us to enjoy by watching them on a nature documentary, not living in a cage.

For most of us a dog or cat is still the wisest choice for a family pet.

I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer so far. A bit rainy, but it’s still been fun. This month I’m going to give you two recipes that will tickle your sweet tooth. Two of my readers sent these in. I want to thank you both. I’ve made them, and they are both delicious and EASY! I haven’t made the first one in years, and the second one, I never have.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes, until cake pulls away from side of pan. Let stand 5 minutes for topping to begin to set. Then turn upside down on a large platter or a cookie sheet. Top servings with whipped cream if desired.

Ingredients

Ingredients

• A box of Duncan Hines Pineapple Supreme Cake Mix (if you can’t find it, then use Yellow Cake Mix) • ½ cup Crisco Oil (vegetable or canola oil will do also) • 1 cup brown sugar • 1 can (1 pound 14 ounce) pineapple slices • Maraschino Cherry halves, if desired Directions Pour the oil in 13 x 9 ½ x 2-inch pan.

Grease toughly. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly in pan. Drain pineapples, saving syrup/juice. Arrange pineapples and cherries (rounded side down) in the sugar mixture. Add enough water to pineapple syrup/juice to make 1- 1/3 cup liquid. Add

• Bag of small pretzels • ROLO candies • Pecan halves Directions Spread the pretzels on a cookie sheet. Place a ROLO on each pretzel. Put in the oven at low heat until the ROLO’s start to melt. Convenience Stores and Grocery Stores. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

e find it both ironic and sad that some stores seem to put a premium on customer service and cleanliness while others could seem to care less. Like the bottom line is their only concern and they could care less about us, the customer. The only thing that they care about regarding us, is to get as much of our money as they can, and the heck with anything else.

First of all, we would like to praise a couple of businesses that really do care. We recently went grocery shopping at an H-E-B store. We actually counted 14, yes 14, real live cashiers at their check-out area. Again, the number was FOURTEEN. To top it off, most lines even had sackers to bag up our grocery purchases.

Now that is customer service! They also have a wonderful butcher meat counter and deli with plenty of helpful workers staffing them.

Another great example is BUC-EE’S. Always plenty of live cashiers to check us out. Even when they are extremely busy and crowded, they still do a masterful job of getting us through their checkout line.

They also care enough about us to keep their plentiful bathrooms spotless and well supplied. Also, everything they have in their store is working. What a concept, huh? Do you want a Diet Coke from their fountain drink machines? You can count on the ice working to fill your cup. There are actually cups there to fill, and Diet Coke will be what you get. Everything in the store is in working order.

Now comes the other side of the story. We recently shopped at a major grocery store chain that had 1, yes ONE, actual real live cashier. The rest were all self-checkout lanes. What a horrible experience. Talk about not caring a thing about customer service. If we wanted to do their work for them, we would fill out an application.

than how easily they charge outrageous prices. Try getting a juicy, plump hot dog at one of these terrible stores. You won’t get one. The hot dog rollers are spinning round and round without one single wiener on there. You have one overworked, underpaid cashier trying to check out a long line full of customers. The wait to get checked out is often painful. Hopefully, you won’t have to use the restroom while you are in their store. The restrooms are often filthy and contain no toilet paper or paper towels. That is, if they are even open, and don’t have an Out Of Service sign taped onto the door.

There you have it. Prime examples of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Do we like it when stores actually care about us, the customer?

YES! WE LIKE THAT! Do we like it when the stores care nothing about us other than getting our money?

NO! WE DON’T LIKE THAT! Let’s do what makes sense. Reward the stores that care about customer service with our business. Let’s refuse to support the ones that could care less about us.

Then comes one of our favorite peeves. Convenience stores.

When I first ventured to Mustang Island, located on the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas, I found a place that’s straight out of a Robert Earl Keen song. The iconic Texas musician sings that “the road goes on forever, and the party never ends.” But Mustang Island offered a twist on his lyrics: the road literally ends at the ship channel (and a ferry) in the old town area of Port Aransas.

Even though the road does not go on forever, the party in Port Aransas never ends: lively beach bars, a robust restaurant scene, some of the best fishing around, and a funky beach town

vibe that comes in part from a location at the very end of the road.

But I didn’t find the kind of walkable mixed-use communities that so many people – including many Texans – have come to love along Florida’s Highway 30A, a place that I call home.

I met Jeff Lamkin in 2006 after he had purchased 60 acres on Mustang Island. He loved Port Aransas, but also saw potential in the wide open spaces just outside of old town to create a new community for beach-loving Texans. I designed the master plan and wrote the design code to generate a

isitors to Galveston marvel at our many fine restaurants and attractions and find it difficult to believe we are actually a very small city with fewer than 50,000 permanent residents. free roaming monkeys. You will feel the oppressive heat and humidity that is maintained as you enter. Finally, there is the discovery pyramid which focuses on science and discovery with many exhibits and hands-on activities, including a 4D interactive theater.

The service, table settings, and decor are what you expect from a restaurant of this caliber, but the breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico is something few places can duplicate.

NIBLETS Shedding Light On The Challenges Currently Affecting Our Restaurants By: James Clark, CTA

D

uring the “shutdown” that resulted in major seclusion for most folks, everyone kept saying the pent-up demand was building substantially and that once Texans were given the official thumbs up to re-engage in society, it was going to be like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

Boy were they right!

On March 10th, when Governor Abbott lifted the precautionary executive mandates, it was like a flood gate was opened. Business was back and booming better than ever, but this massive wave of business introduced some major long lived and ongoing challenges for our restaurateurs: labor shortage crisis, skyrocketing & volatile supply prices, lack of consistency of supplies, shortages of supplies, and guests who don’t fully understand the circumstances restaurateurs are dealing with and leaving negative reviews affecting the reputations they have worked so hard to build over so many years.

The biggest hurdle by far has been labor shortage.

Normally, Galveston restaurants start increasing staff in early February in order to prepare for Spring Break in March, which is then a precursor for what is to come in late May when school is out and Summer officially begins.

This year was different. Restaurants struggled to build their crews, job ads would go unanswered, interviews would be scheduled and no one would show up, or new staff were hired and would never show up for their first day. Staffing is still a struggle and the volume of guests just keeps increasing. If there isn’t enough staff to give the guests a proper dining experience, restaurants opt to restrict their seating capacities to a level that will allow them to provide a great experience for their guests. This is sometimes met with backlash from guests because they see empty tables, experience longer than usual waits, and sometimes the dining experience is affected.

There are national shortages on common things such as chicken wings, ketchup, the resin required to make to go packages, champagne, vegetable oil, crab meat, certain cuts of beef, etc. Since these items are in low supply, the demand for them does one of two things; drives the prices through the roof (200, 300, and even sometimes 400%), and/or they are just not available for weeks on end.

Another challenge is even if the product is available, quite often the suppliers don’t have enough truck drivers to deliver the supplies to the restaurants due to the labor shortage. Restaurants then search tirelessly for suitable alternatives or ways to get the necessary products to keep the “show” going and provide for our guests who have been waiting to come see us for over a year.

Restaurants welcome their guests with open arms. It has been such a rough year that some businesses weren’t able to weather the storm, but those that did are so incredibly appreciative to have each customers business.

Restaurants ask for understanding, and patience, as we navigate these challenges and persevere to once again provide a wonderful dining experience. Rest assured that restaurants are grateful for their guests; they are working very hard to accommodate and rise to the challenges of a new world of operations.

What Is Foliar Feeding?

W

hen it comes to fertilizing, there are two different methods. Fertilizing the soil and foliar feeding. Both are very important, but very different ways of feeding your plants. And, as always, organic is better than synthetic.

When you add fertilizer to the soil, you are essentially feeding the millions and millions of microorganisms in the soil. These microbes then convert the nutrients in the soil and fertilizer into a form that the plant roots can absorb. As we have talked about in previous articles, compost is the best fertilizer for the soil and can be applied anytime of the year. As a minimum, your beds, gardens, or pots should be top dressed in the spring and fall. This will do wonders for your plants.

However, if you really want to give your plants an immediate boost, you should use a foliar feed. Foliar feeding is when you take a liquid fertilizer, like compost tea, and spray it on your plants. The plants are able to absorb the fertilizer through their leaves and take it directly into their system. This is such an easy process, and it yields great results.

The difference between the two types of feeding your plants is a lot like the difference between taking an antibiotic orally versus taking it through an IV. The oral antibiotic is effective, but takes longer. The antibiotic in the IV hits the system much faster and can begin working immediately. The foliar feeding is like giving an antibiotic via an IV, it hits the system so much faster.

Both methods of fertilizing are essential to beautiful plants, and you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts!

The problem is so bad they recommended rebuilding the west end of the island before another storm had the opportunity to ravage the area. I t ’ s T oo Hot, Too Hot Baby!

commented the other day to the young man helping me load my groceries into my car, “Geez, it’s really hot today.” His response was, “Yes ma’am, it’s Texas.” Well played, fellow.

Yes, it’s August in Texas, of course, it’s hot. And honestly, we have probably another eight weeks ahead of this heat and humidity. So how in the world is one supposed to get a workout in and stay fit in this kind of weather?

First, let’s talk about how heat affects your body. Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature and humidity can increase your core body temperature. When you exercise, your blood gets pumping to deliver adequate oxygen to your muscles. This leads to a rise in body temperature. When you’re getting physical in above-average temperatures, this effect is more intense because your heart sends large amounts of blood to the skin in an attempt to cool it down and, in turn, leaves less blood in the muscles, further speeding the heart rate.

To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. If the humidity is also high, like in Galveston, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. That pushes your body temperature even higher.

During hot-weather exercise, watch for signs and symptoms of heat-related illness. If you ignore these symptoms, your condition can worsen, resulting

in a medical emergency. Signs and symptoms may include muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, weakness, fatigue, headache, excessive sweating, dizziness or lightheadedness, confusion, irritability (ok, who doesn’t get irritable in the heat?!), increased heart rate, and visual problems.

If you develop any of these symptoms, you must lower your body temperature and get hydrated right away. Stop exercising immediately and get out of the heat. If possible, have someone stay with you who can help monitor your condition.

But all this being said, if you take a few precautionary steps, you can continue with your fitness program through the heat of the summer.

When it’s hot or humid, be active during the cooler times of the day. Find shaded areas, like parks with big trees, and drink plenty of fluids. You have less chance of getting too hot if you do lighter exercise, like walking or bike riding.

Galveston has over 22 shady parks and recreation areas open to us! Let’s use them. Be sure to wear sunscreen and take water with you to drink often.

If you are into jogging or running, take morning or evening jogs when the sun is low in the sky and temperatures are milder. And as a side note: please, please leave your dog at home in the air conditioning this time of year. All too often, I still see people dragging their poor puppies outside with them as they exercise. Imagine wearing a fur coat and no shoes and running on the asphalt with no way to sweat? That’s www.wavesgalveston.com

exactly how it feels for your dog. They love you and will follow you anywhere, so please take their safety into account and leave them at home during the summer.

When you are exercising outside, wear light-colored, lightweight clothing. Dark colors absorb the heat, making you feel as if you’re wrapped in a warm blanket.

Keep it loose. Keep it light. More air will be able to circulate over your skin, keeping you cool.

Go swimming. We have an excellent public pool, Lasker Community Pool at 2016 43rd Street. Swimming is a fun and healthy family activity for summer.

Do light yard work or gardening. You’ll burn calories while you keep the yard looking good. Wash your car. This gets you outside and helps you burn calories. Give yourself a splash to stay cool.

Use light weights or stretch bands at home. You’ll stay fit while you are inside in the cool. Use an online exercise video or a smartphone app.

Join a gym or a group fitness studio.

You can take classes or use machines, like treadmills, stair-climbers, or stationary bikes. Check out Galveston’s McGuire-Dent Rec Center for indoor fitness facilities too. If you have health problems, ask your doctor before you use machines or take classes.

Working out in hot weather isn’t easy, so don’t sabotage your fitness goals

with calorie-dense sports drinks or juices. Water is usually your best option for hydration. To keep cool, make sure first of all that you’re drinking plenty of water. We tend to lose about 2 to 3% during typical exercise and activity, especially on hot days, so while you’re exercising, drink 8 to 10 ounces of water every 20 minutes. After training, drink more – at minimum, another 8 ounces. Another source of hydration is fruit—snack on juicy fruits like apples, watermelon, or strawberries after a workout.

It’s ok to change your workouts up with

the seasons. Pay heed to the heat.

Listen to your body. Remember that even a 20-minute workout has positive health effects. It’s the number of days you exercise that matters most.

ETC ANNOUNCES SPAMALOT TO OPEN SEASON By: Paul Hager

E

TC’s artistic director Kim Mytelka is busy putting together the theatre’s 19th season but did take time out to let me know they will be opening it with one of my favorite musicals - Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Monty Python’s Spamalot is a musical comedy adapted from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the motion picture, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian legend, but it differs from the film in many ways. The original 2005 Broadway

production, directed by Mike Nichols, received 14 Tony Awards nominations, winning in three categories, including Best Musical. During its initial run of 1,575 performances, it was seen by more than two million people and grossed over $175 million. Tim Curry starred as King Arthur in the original Broadway and West End productions with David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin. It was one of eight UK musicals commemorated on Royal Mail stamps, issued in February 2011.

A Paramount Pictures film adaptation, directed by Casey Nicholaw in his directorial debut from a script by Idle, is in the works as of 2021.

Ten Long-Time Restaurant Chains That Are Having Hard Times appy August, Wavers! I hope everyone has been wearing their seat belts because this year has really been flying by. Thank you all so much for your kind comments regarding my “Famous Last Words” column. Several of you have asked for more of those and that just may happen.

As you all know, your Bum is a foodie. I love good eating. I was running around in my ol’ scarab the other day and I had a thought. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking. What is going on with all the changes in restaurant chains? It seems to be a constantly changing landscape.

A lot of restaurant chains have been struggling for the past several years. Some rightfully so. Add in a pandemic, marginal quality, lackluster service, and you have the perfect storm for failure. Your Bum prefers the locally owned restaurants that sincerely care about us and retaining our business. Let’s support our locally owned restaurants as often as we can. They work extremely hard.

There are a few restaurant chains in our area that seem to put forth the effort, but that is usually the exception to the rule. Here is a list of some restaurant chains that are either going to go away totally in the future, or make dramatic changes, including location closures...

Taco Bell Taco Bell is no longer the whole enchilada. Glen Bell opened the first Taco Bell in 1962, after watching the Mexican restaurant next to his hot dog stand make way more money than he was. Bell’s first restaurant was named Taco Tia, basing his foods off the neighboring Mexican stands.

It has been announced that there will be some major cutbacks in locations in 2021, as well as some drastic menu changes.

Olive Garden I guess if all you want is endless breadsticks and salad, this place might be okay in a pinch. Your Bum is not a fan.

In 2020, Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden, reported that their profits dropped as much as 60% compared to 2019 reports.

Already struggling Olive Garden locations have started closing in Massachusetts and Alabama. Stay tuned for more.

Pizza Hut Back in the small town your Bum grew up in, Pizza Hut was a popular hang-out after Friday night high school football games. My, how times have changed. The Pizza Hut you remember is soon going to be just a distant memory.

The chain has decided it is going out of the sit-down business and strictly become a carryout and delivery store.

Also, the stores are going to go from 7,450 to around 7,000.

Burger King The burger place has a total of 17,800 restaurants operating around the United States. In your Bum’s opinion, there are much better burgers to be found. It could be the increase in health-food awareness, but whatever the reason, Burger King has announced that they are going to be shutting down 200-250 under-performing restaurants this year. That’s 100-150 more than the previous year, which makes me think we might see BK go out of business in our lifetime.

Applebee’s When a restaurant has dollar margarita days, you know something fishy is going on behind the scenes. Applebee’s has over 1,830 locations. The restaurant made the mistake of trying to modernize to win over the new millennial generation by adding WIFI and tablets at every table. That great idea severely backfired. The older, long-time customers did not like the changes and have stayed away in droves. The “neighborhood grill” locations have started to swiftly shut down.

I’m hoping they keep the dollar drink days.

Chili’s With so many popular chain restaurants struggling to stay afloat, it’s no surprise Chili’s is too. In 2020, sales at Chili’s locations dropped to about a third of their year-ago revenue.

The company introduced menu rebranding and other various promotions, including a loyalty program. Instead of increasing their profits, that program began to eat into them. In hopes to come out on top, they decided to cut their menu options in half to simplify their kitchen operations. I wonder if their Baby-Back will be back?

Golden Corral In mid-2020, Golden Corral announced that they would be closing 35 of its locations and furloughing 2,290 employees. The announcement was made by CEO Lance Trenary, who said “It is truly an emotional and challenging time for our country.” I’m hoping our Galveston location stays open. They have a senior citizen’s lunch special after 1 pm weekdays.

A senior can get the salad bar, the entire buffet, and the dessert bar, for under $9. That price also includes a drink with free refills.

That’s a nice service folks.

Cheescake Factory In March 2020, the Cheesecake Factory Chairman and CEO David Overton announced in an open letter to its landlord that the restaurant chain would not be able to pay rent at any of its 294 locations for the month of April. Within the same month, 27 locations closed their doors.

Employing 38,000 people, the Cheesecake Factory is one of the largest restaurant employers in America. Since the announcement, the Cheesecake Factory stock has fallen by more than 50 percent.

T.G.I Friday’s Once upon a time several years ago your Bum lived in Dallas, Texas. The T.G.I. Friday’s located on Greenville Avenue was voted one of the Top 10 singles pick-up bars in the United States at that time. It probably doesn’t surprise any of you that your Bum would know this information. Since those days, Friday’s 870 locations around the world transformed themselves into casual dining restaurants. That was a failure.

In recent years, Friday’s has tried to revamp itself and its menu back to its single-bar roots. The change did not come quickly enough and management announced that it is going to be closing its underperforming locations throughout 2021.

IHOP IHOP, short for International House of Pancakes, has been a go-to place for breakfast since 1958. Due to the rising number of people who are beginning to eat healthier and watch their calorie intake, IHOP is getting hit hard. Their customer base is minimizing, and business is slowing due to what some people think is an “unhealthy” menu. Owner Dine Brands said they were going to close as many as 40 locations.

S

cotch-Brite© Magic - It’s not really about a magic pad, but the results of using one to create a crosshatch pattern on monofilament’s surface is sort of magical. I came up with this mono crosshatch idea about twelve years ago and have been using it ever since. My idea was generated after I saw an underwater photo of a hooked ling on a mono leader, taken a foot or so below the surface — the mono leader was shining in the reflected, magnified sunlight as if it were chrome. While that was extreme, it did bring out the apparent fact that, even though a mono leader might be clear, its smooth surface greatly contributed to it being a sunlight reflector.

The most common viewing of this “chrome mono” look is when the sunlight is coming from above to almost directly behind a mono strand and into the water. The next time you are on a pier, beach or in a boat, look for this extreme reflected sunlight — “chrome mono.” Diffusing the reflected shine of your mono line/leader may turn a wary adult of just about any species from a “looker” into an “eater”, especially when fishing for any near surface species.

This also applies to inshore and bay fishing. Think about how many times this has probably happened in the past. Killing the reflection on a mono main line for about 5-6 feet above a wire leader helps too, especially when a short leader of around twelve inches is used.

The idea of a crosshatch pattern on the mono’s surface greatly reducing the reflection was a good one; how to get it there was the next problem. Somewhere in the thought process of solving the reflection problem, I came up with using fine grit wet/ dry sandpaper. This sort of worked, but still was not what I was looking for. When looking at a scouring pad the “light bulb came on.” After trying several brands and types of pads, I settled on the dark green ones by 3-MTM, named Scotchbrite©. They had the

flexibility, softness and texture that gave the best and most consistent crosshatch pattern on a mono strand’s surface. The last time I bought any of these Scotch-brite© pads was at Sam’s, a “Value Pack” of 18. When each pad was cut into four equal pieces, this gave me a total of 72, measuring about 4-1/2” x 3” x 1/4”.

The mono surface crosshatching process goes like this: Hold one end of the mono section to be modified in your left hand; with the folded Scotchbrite© pad with the mono held snugly in it in your right hand, that’s up against your left hand. Now, with a back and forth wrist rolling motion of about one second each, pull the mono slowly thru the Scotch-brite© pad at about 6” per second with your right hand. See the illustration. When you get to the distance along the mono to be crosshatched, stop and reverse the process until you reach the original starting point. One time up, one time down the mono and you have put a crosshatch pattern on the mono surface. Breaking up the mono’s reflective surface must be done with a crosshatch pattern, just pulling a mono strand straight through a Scotch-brite© pad will only put those minute scratches in a straight line, the reflected shine will still be a problem, in fact, intensified. The random crosshatch pattern definitely diffuses the reflected light.

To see the effect of this crosshatching, using great care, fill a clear glass container with clear water, put it in a position so that direct sunlight is coming through from the side away from you. Put a loop of crosshatched mono and a loop from the same spool without the treatment into the jar’s water. The mono loop with the crosshatch pattern will almost disappear, versus the unaltered piece. You will have no question as to the effectiveness of the crosshatching.

The benefit of this crosshatching is that it’s headed in the direction of having stealth performance as

fifteen feet of 80# mono leader knotted on. I only do the Scotch-brite© treatment to the outer 5-6 feet and cut the leader back as needed as the fishing goes on. I haven’t done a break test of before and after the crosshatching, but I have fished it all these years without any problems other than the occasional cloudiness on the surface. with fluorocarbon. You retain the flexibility and knot strength of mono, while gaining near invisibility in the water. Other fluorocarbon problem areas eliminated are: the reported questionable knot strength and stiffness of some, plus its higher cost. At about six dollars for that pack of Scotchbrite© pads, plus a little time and effort, this crosshatching looks like and is a definite fishing tackle bargain.

Does this crosshatching weaken the mono? Infinitesimally is the word that comes to mind when I’m asked that question. The one effect that is a minus will come into view after it’s fished a day or two; the disturbed surface might turn a bit cloudy. Change the leader or cut the cloudy portion off. All of the reels I use offshore have Spectra© on them and about

This is another of those instances where adapting a product to a non-related use results in a tried and proven true new technique — you never know where you will make your next fishing tackle find. Using a Scotch-brite© scouring pad to create a low-cost nonfilament alternative to fluorocarbon while keeping mono’s basic characteristic — it’s Scotch-brite© Magic!

lvia Ortiz Segura has been named director of educational services at Galveston College, Dr. Cissy Matthews, vice president of instruction announced this week.

Studies from Texas Woman’s University and just started her second year at Abilene Christian University in the Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership in Higher Education program.

Previously, she served as a student success adviser in the Counseling and Advising Center.

Segura’s career in higher education began 15 years ago at her alma mater, UTPA, as a professional guidance counselor for the Academic Advisement Center. She moved back to the Gulf Coast area in 2009 and worked in the College of Business at the University of Houston-Clear Lake until late 2012 when she joined Galveston College under a Title V grant. In 2017, she joined the Galveston College Counseling and Advising Center team.

As director of educational services, Segura will be responsible for the development and administration of dual-credit partnerships with high schools in the college’s service area, as well as the college’s distance-education program.

“We are excited to have Elvia leading our Educational Services programs at Galveston College,” said Dr. Matthews. “She brings a tremendous amount of experience in working with students, faculty and administrators, and will be a great asset to the college in networking with our school districts, students and families in promoting and expanding our Educational Services programs.”

Segura is the only one of five siblings who graduated from college. She gives credit to her father who chose to change his legacy when he decided to move from Mexico to provide a better life for a family he dreamed of having one day.

She was born and raised in south Texas, where she also received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from the University of Texas Pan American (UTPA), now known as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Family

Segura said she looks forward to her new journey and aspires to keep making a difference for students, faculty and the Galveston College community.

“I am very excited to extend my services to the dual-credit and distance-learning students with this new role,” Segura said.

“I also look forward to helping student populations that may have not had the opportunity to take advantage of the dual-credit program or students who may not understand the flexibility online education allows. I am most hopeful to be a voice for racially minoritized students who feel out of the loop but want to get an education.”

f you want to k now what Americans look like, just watch the Olympics.

I was recently sitting at Bubba’s on the Strand listen ing to The Band Stranded with several local islanders.

It struck me as I watched the American Gymnastics team compete in the Tokyo Olympics that the men and women’s teams reall y do represent America.

America is an idea. It is made of different cultures and nationalities who make the USA the most diverse country in the world. This diversit y helps makes us great.

They are representing our country, the U ni ted States of America and all it stands for; the purs ui t of excellence.

Besides diversity, what makes Ameri ca the greatest country on ea rth? Excellence, ingenuity, hard work, dedication, commitment, sacr ifi ce, and the ability to overcome setbac ks. I’m not only talking about winning gold medals at the Olympi c Games, I’m talking about showing the world what and who America is…. through the stories and eyes of the athletes.

Team USA members come from different backgrounds and different parts of the country. olunteering at the Ronald House brings a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to those who are willing to give a few hours to perform minor but essential tasks needed in the every-day function of a home as large as this one is. Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases.

If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-chacha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine!

Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions.
