business owners had no chill—but clearly desperately needed some—when they first learned that a smoke shop would be joining them in their upscale South Austin shopping center. While most smoke shops in the city that vows to “keep it weird” follow through on exactly that, t-shirts doning bluntsmoking extraterrestrials aren’t exactly at home among wine bars and salons. It’s obvious in how their merchandise brings queer and feminist culture together with smoke culture. Fortunately, the smoke shop that moved into the neighborhood last fall not only fits right in, but is dedicated to making everyone feel at home when they come inside. Months later, with daily visits from cops, doctors, dads, and bosses, it’s safe to say they’ve been successful. Owned by Jae and her partner Francis, MaryJae is arguably the first of its kind in Austin. Rather than filled to the brim with familiar bulbous glass spoons, MaryJae is distinguished by the inventive works of art displayed on its shelves. For those looking for a different kind of smoking experience, MaryJae offers hand-painted ceramic pipes that double as decor, stunning sculptural glass pieces, and everything else you haven’t seen—from pastel honey bear water pipes to delicate boob pipes meant to be loved by queers, not creeps. Here, there is no blasting

music, black lights, or brain-melting incense. MaryJae manages to be an impossibly classy (reasonably-priced!) boutique smoke shop without any air of exclusivity. Everyone and their mom walks through MaryJae’s doors. And, in terms of target audience, that was the whole point. Earlier in her life, Jae owed a sex shop in Texas and offers that same kind of vulnerability, positivity, and non-judgement to MaryJae. It’s obvious in how their merchandise brings queer and feminist culture together with smoke culture, but also in the way gentle Jae approaches her clientele. Since Texas is a prohibition state, the language surrounding the purchase of smoke products can get

tricky. While traditional head shops in nonlegal states might kick out a customer who asks for a roach clip, MaryJae redirects them to the array of cigarette holders available. It’s all part of a larger commitment to education over humiliation, and removing the stigma surrounding the products they sell. According to Jae, it’s working well. “Usually, when middle-aged women want to smoke together, they’ll send one of them into the shop to get the pipe. Here, they’ll all come in together, Jae says. “You can see that they actually feel comfortable looking around.” Having introduced her father to cannabis to help him beat alcohol addiction, manage pain associated with cirrhosis of the liver and prostate cancer, and extend his life, “breaking the taboo” was part of Jae’s mission for opening the MaryJae to begin with. She lost her father in 2015 and attributes cannabis

culture to what helped bring a new level of connection to their relationship in the last few years of his life. She remembers a medical appointment during his treatment when he asked her within earshot of the doctor if they could get weed later that afternoon. Expecting to be scolded by the doctor, the doctor instead looked at Jae and simply said, “Make him comfortable.” There was liberation in having to be just a little less quiet, in seeing a culture slowly be more integrated and accepted. Recently, a man came into MaryJae asking if they carried a missing piece to a water pipe he’d found in his daughter’s room. Like a dad “should,” he’d taken it away from her—but he wasn’t about to let it go to waste. Like a helpful owner of a smoke shop, Jae helped him find the piece he was missing. Like a daughter, she gave the man some heartfelt, yet maybe radical advice. “Use it with her,” she said. RACHAEL HELLMAN

THE GREAT RUSSET

Spreading quickly across the United States and Canada

is a species of mites that make even spider mites look slow, sluggish, and intermediate. If you have dealt with spider mites and felt somewhat victorious over your triumph defeating them, get ready to feel like a rookie all over again. The Russet Mite-gration is here to stay and you had better be prepared to treat your garden when you finally do see them. About 5 years ago California was trying to come up with a way to remove milk thistle from the sides of their highways. They selected the Russet Mite to do the job. Milk thistle was dying and the Russet Mites were extremely effective. However, once the thistle had been killed off the mites didn’t just disappear… They found an even easier plant to feast on and have been damaging crops across the United States. How is it that something so tiny is migrating so quickly across the states? If you take a road map of the United States and start in California traveling the busiest highways eastbound you just found your Russet Mite free transportation route.

22 FOX & NUG • WINTER 2018

We are now hearing that the UK is dealing with russet mite infestations from cuts taken in the US. Scary to think about. Farms across our country have slowly seen Russet Mites destroy millions of dollars worth of cannabis with very little to no information available on how to effectively treat for them. Russet mites are no joke. In fact, I grew for 10 whole years before seeing my first crop get burned up by these microscopic beasts in late 2014. I didn’t even know to look through a 30x scope until I spoke with local growers. Even then there were only a few people who had seen them. I bombed and cleaned multiple times. They came back. It was now all out war with the russet mite. After battling for months and watching crops getting eaten up I found a product at a local grow store called Wizard’s Brew. I spoke with an employee and he gave me a sample to try. Finally, after the very first use I saw them dried up, dead, and couldn’t find living russets anywhere that I had sprayed! We were glad to have found an natural product that was safe, effective and non-toxic. It’s only a matter of time before you encounter these little detrimental pests! Make sure you are ready! Wizard’s Brew can kill russet mite adults and their eggs on contact and is safe to spray until week of harvest. However, if growing for concentrates please stop spraying week 3 of flower.

Say hello to the first FOX of 2018. Savannah Rose Orth. We’ve seen Savvy at multiple industry events over the years and have always been charmed by her kindness and positively infectious attitude. This year at the Indo Expo as she passed out CBD infused caramels for Restorative Botanicals we couldn’t help but ask if she would be so kind as to grace our pages. She said yes! On the day of the shoot, Savvy and I met early at the mall to do a little shopping for the shoot and no matter what we were doing, waiting in the cold for a Tesla or browsing the surprisingly scarce selection at Victoria’s Secret, she was laughing and having a good time. We booked it to the set and started shooting by 4:20 PM. Savvy’s favorite way of smoking is blunts. She loves indicas and sativas depending on the mood she’s in, but for this shoot Savvy requested CBD! This colorado Native is currently studying psychology and plans to enter the field of counseling after she graduates. We were happy to hear it. I know if I were having a hard time and she was my counselor, I would leave the session in a much better frame of mind than how I came in. Thanks Savvy for a wonderful afternoon of photos and fun. We can’t wait to have you back at the Fox Den and look forward to see the wonderful things you do with your life.

CHEM DE LA CHEM BREEDER : Elite Genetics / Matt Danger Ross CULTIVATED BY : Boston Brian LINEAGE : Chem D x I-95 FLOWER TIME : 9 weeks

FLAVORS : Chem de la Chem is a greasy, gassy, resinous, beauty of a bud. Imagine rich gasoline, fresh moth balls and earth filling the air when you crack open a jar and smelling full-on chem on the exhale. We think this is easily the most perfect og/chem cross we’ve ever had and it makes some seriously delicious sauce.

EFFECTS : Chem de la Chem is a bushy, medium height, indica that boasts an intense, extremely sedative high. We’re talking old school, locked to the couch with a huge smile on your face, eating brownies, then having the best sleep of your life - kind of stoned. one woman’s journey to find wellness and success in cannabis by Janessa Lea

I

was anxiously awaiting the news, then it came and I wished we could have been anywhere but there. “Your daughter has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, it is genetic.” It was 2014 and Raegan was 7 at the time. My heart felt like it had been shattered into pieces. I knew the struggles that lay ahead for my daughter because I, too, had EDS and had just been diagnosed the year before. From a young age I suffered from pain and instability in my joints, as well as other weird health issues that were never addressed. As I got older, the pain got more intense and the instability increased. When I had my daughter in 2007, things got much worse. My health declined drastically, and my weight increased significantly. These issues led me on my search in modern western medicine to find out what was causing these issues. In 2010 went to many specialists, and had a significant number of procedures and tests done. It was then I was diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease. Soon after, the doctors referred me to a pain clinic in where I was immediately given a prescription of oxycodone 5mg to use 6 times a day. Whoa! Was I happy, but boy was I ignorant! At this point I was 22 years old and a brand new mom. I trusted what the doctors told me and thought that taking the medication was what I should be doing. After all, it did rid me of my pain and make me feel like superwoman. Why wouldn’t I continue to take a prescription my doctor was telling me to? At this point I had no clue what I was getting myself into. Here is what the doctors don’t tell you about opiates: your body gets dependent on them. I hate when people ask me, ”Did you get addicted?” As if I had a choice. You don’t have a choice with opiates. Once you start taking opiates (oxycodone, morphine, percocet, vicodin, etc.) on a daily basis, your body becomes dependent on them. No choice had. They also don’t tell you how fast your tolerance increases. But rest assured, the doctors will be there to increase your dose when you need more.

Within a few months, they did just that and increased my dose. By the end of my nearly 5 year stretch at the pain clinics, I was being prescribed 150mg of oxycodone, 90mg of extended release morphine, in addition to “as needed” instant release morphine PER DAY. I was 27 years old, a single mother, significantly overweight weighing in at 250lbs, and was in a lot of pain, still, even with the narcotic prescriptions due to tolerance. They also don’t tell you that opiates can actually increase your pain too!

By the end of my nearly 5 year stretch at the pain clinics, I was being prescribed 150mg of oxycodone, 90mg of extended release morphine, in addition to “as needed” instant release morphine PER DAY. Also, I didn’t know it, but during this time I didn’t have the correct knowledge and understanding of the disease I was fighting. I had been misdiagnosed with Lupus in the early days and I had never heard of EDS like many. It wasn’t until January 2013, when I was properly diagnosed. Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, or EDS for short is a connective tissue disease that weakens the collagen in your body. You can think of collagen like the glue that holds the body together, it is what gives the body structure, strength, and flexibility. If you have EDS your collagen will be severely elastic resulting in a number of health issues, like dislocations, sublocations and hyperextensions.

WINTER 2018 • FOX & NUG 47

This then causes a number of issues like osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and significant overall pain. Upon diagnosis, I was prescribed bracing for my ankles, wrists, and knees, which was literally holding me together. As the disease progressed, and accidents where I would fall, and try and catch myself, then end up dislocation that wrist/arm became more frequent, I was prescribed a wheelchair. The doctors had said it was just too risky for me to be mobile and on my own at this point. In early 2014 I brought my daughter into the University of Minnesota to be evaluated for EDS too, because I was told it was genetic, and she would have 50% chance of having it. One of my worst fears came true as she tested positive. I broke. I knew in my heart the battles that lay ahead for my little girl. This news would be the catalyst that launched my learning of how cannabis could change not just my life, but my daughter’s future as well. I knew I had to find a better way. I knew I would never be able to forgive myself if Raegan suffered a similar fate on narcotics because she saw me use them. I was determined to have Raegan see me fight this in the healthiest way possible so she could grow up to make the best possible choices for her EDS as an adult. I also knew that I had felt better when I used cannabis in high school. I didn’t know exactly how, but I remember being in less pain so I started reading about the medical properties cannabis has and tried what I could while living in the illegal state of Minnesota. To my surprise, it worked! It was enough to manage my pain enough for me to consistently workout and build muscle around my weak joints. If I has muscles around my joints holding me together, I wouldn’t dislocate, sublocate and hyperextend as often, and This meant, out with the narcotics, and in with cannabis! I started by going to water physical therapy, and doing land PT at home. I slowly started to build muscle around

48 FOX & NUG • WINTER 2018

my weak joints and learned correct posture. My physical therapist and I retrained my muscles so they knew the proper way to hold my unstable body together with the least amount of hyperextending and injuries, thus attributing to less pain. I was ecstatic to finally be building muscle and feeling stronger which seemed impossible when I was doped up on narcotics. I also took a deep look into what I was ingesting into my body and really changed up my eating habits. Before this epiphany I ate fast food, and never looked at labels. This was something that needed to change. So, I researched the significance of cutting sugars, GMO’s, salts and processed foods from my diet would do, as well as the importance of choosing organic. It didn’t take long of eating clean to really understand that how you feel is directly related to what you put in your body. At this point my health plan became clear. I had to continue to medicate with cannabis enough to fight the pain EDS had brought into my life, so I could get my physical therapy done everyday and continue to build muscle. Cannabis, fitness and nutrition was what I needed to have any quality of life! Before I knew it I was calling my insurance telling them to come pick up the loaner chair, and told them to stop building my custom set of wheels. I can say this was one of the happiest days of my life! At this time, not only was I dealing with a slew of health issues, but I had become very insecure and allowed an extremely emotionally and physically abusive person to reside in my life. I also lack any family support, which made being codependent on my abuser very easy. It took time, but eventually I started to seek refuge in the time I spent strengthening my body. I would often leave my residence to go workout, knowing he couldn’t hurt me when I wasn’t near him. Between my daughter, seeing that wheelchair when I woke up everyday, and living in an abusive relationship, there was nothing I wanted more than to feel strong,

independent and healthy! This is when I really started to put in significant time into fitness, which was early summer 2015. I spent a lot of time outside at parks working out on my yoga mat and renting kayaks. It was so rewarding to feel stronger, and put space between myself and my abuser. This success inspired me to continue and never give up.. With the new found love I had for myself I grew emotionally strong enough to get an order for protection against my abuser, and got him out of my life once and for good in July 2015. I was still experiencing some health related issues due to EDS in the winter of 2015, and came upon FECO, or Fully Extracted Cannabis Oil. This is a high concentration of cannabis oil that had seen much success helping people manage and even cure cancer and other major illnesses. After doing a little research I decided to try the treatment myself. I learned the goal was to ingest 60 grams of oil in 90 days, reaching upwards to 2,000mg of THC medicine a day for an entire month. This would bring my endocannabinoid system back to homeostasis and would hopefully I was only able to ingest half of the treatment while in Minnesota, however I received great benefit from that and is what I attribute the majority of my healing to.

At this point my health plan became clear. I had to continue to medicate with cannabis enough to fight the pain EDS had brought into my life With the experience I learned while navigating my illnesses, I felt it was important to speak out about the harms of opiates, and the success I found with cannabis. In May 2014, I heard on the news there was a group of cannabis activists trying to get a working medical program in Minnesota, so I decided to share my story and testify at the state capitol. Since then, I have been an active cannabis activist talking to legislators and press about the issues people and face trying to medicate with cannabis. I also made a social media personality, Fit Cannabis Girl, with the purpose of sharing my canna-fitness journey, news and information relating to cannabis.

Living in Minnesota was taking its toll, so and I decided I needed to get to a legal state to reap the full benefits of cannabis as medicine. In November of 2016 I packed my daughter, cat and what we could fit into my car, and made our way to Colorado! With my newfound lease on life, I was no longer satisfied living off Social Security Disability and wanted to return to work. Before I was disabled, I had worked an office job at a bank and went to college for business and psychology. I thought to myself, if I went back and spent my day in an office, I wouldn’t be able to spend that time strengthening my body, and would quit literally, fall apart again. This meant, I needed a career that implemented my way of living. I also thought how amazing it would be to bring canna athletics to the mainstream and break the stigma surrounding this amazing plant. As this idea grew, I decided I wanted to educate, motive and inspire others to change their own quality of life in a similar way, so I created just that. Break the Stigma Fitness, would come to be known as the first cannabis friendly fitness facility in the world! We offer Kickboxing, H.I.I.T. Self Defense and Yoga experiences in Wheat Ridge Colorado in a cannabis friendly space. It is our mission to educate, medicate, motivate, and inspire everyone to take control over their own health and wellness through cannabis, fitness and nutrition. I want to be a reminder that you don’t need to rely on doctors or pharmaceuticals to find healing, you can rely on yourself because YOU have the power! There is no cure for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, but I have found a successful way of managing my symptoms using cannabis, nutrition and fitness. Using these tools, I took control over my wellness and have taken back my life. Because of this, I have a quality of life I was told by doctors I would never achieve and it brings me so much joy to prove the them wrong while also helping others discover the power within them and providing a space to do so in a similar fashion. With that, I would like to leave you with one thought. If you have had a medical professional tell you you can only accomplish certain things, do not to believe them. Have a strong powerful mindset and fight! Figure out and do what works for your body and ALWAYS believe in yourself. And remember, I believe in you!

Less than 5% “ of all the world’s

coffee is specialty grade and has to do with the great care farmers use during cultivation and harvest. -

N

ext, to cannabis, coffee is probably the second most consumed commodity at our office. In every cup we find comfort. In every sip we find the reassurance and inspiration we need to conquer the day. In America more than 400 million cups of coffee are consumed every day and as the price of coffee keeps going up, the struggle to provide fair wages for farmers remains real. Fair Trade : A movement whose goal is to help producers in developing countries get a fair price for their products so as to reduce poverty, provide for the ethical treatment of workers and farmers, and promote environmentally sustainable practices. (merriam-webster) Why fair trade? 90% of coffee is grown in developing countries and unless you’re buying from roasters that insist on some kind of Fair Trade agreement between the farmers and importers, you’re buying from roasters that want the cheapest product possible without much consideration for the quality of life of coffee farmers. The Specialty Coffee Association reports that an average coffee farmer earns just $6, 800 per year, or $566 precious dollars a month. So what’s the impact of Fair Trade? Since 1998, the US has imported more than 400 million pounds of Fair Trade coffee, resulting in about $200 million in additional profits for farmers in the origin countries. This coffee might be a bit more expensive, we think it’s a “fair trade” when you can be assured that there wasn’t child or slave labor involved and that the farmers were compensated fairly. Specialty Coffee: For coffee to qualify as specialty coffee it has to score above 80 on a scale of 100. Less than 5% of all the world’s coffee is specialty grade and has to do with the great care farmers use during cultivation and harvest. Coffee is graded via visual inspection and cupping. Visual inspection involves taking a 350 gram sample of green coffee beans and identifying and counting defective beans. For a coffee to qualify as “speciality”, it must have zero “Primary” defects (i.e. black beans, sour beans) and less than five “Secondary” defects (i.e. broken beans).

WINTER 2018 • FOX & NUG 53

Cupping involves roasting then brewing the coffee, and relies heavily on the skill of the taster to assign value to each of the coffee’s attributes like body, flavor aroma and acidity. In our search for the perfect cup of coffee, we discovered a fair trade coffee brand called Sträva Craft Coffee. How do the founders, Andrew & Kevin, take their coffee? Seriously, very seriously. So here’s some knowledge we think all cannabis aficionados can nerd out on over that morning cup of Joe, or Jane! A Hot Commodity On average, there are 2.25 BILLION cups of coffee consumed every day! The only commodity that is consumed more than coffee - in the entire world - is oil. A Magical Fruit The coffee bean is actually the pit of a fruit. This fruit only grows in certain parts of the world, commonly known as “The Bean Belt.” Legend has it that it was discovered when goats would get excited after eating the berries and, of course, we had to get in on that! Terroir (ter-wahr) Terroir, pronounced ter-wahr, is the set of all environmental factors that affect a crop’s phenotype, including unique environment contexts, farming practices and a crop’s specific growth habitat. Beans grown in Columbia traditionally have a nutty, chocolate flavor, while beans grown in Java will have a tropical fruit flavor!
