very day in the office I walk by a sign that reads, “The dream is free, the hustle is sold separately,” and I chuckle at the truth of such a simple cliche. There’s a million ways to amplify that message with synonymous adages we’ve heard for years: “wisdom is the application of knowledge,” “if you go there in the mind, you’ll surely go there in the body,” on and on. The point is, our best thoughts, guesses and intentions are nothing without a plan to execute our dreams. In order to take bold, calculated steps, you must first know where you’re going. Though my life and professional successes are equal parts preparation, passion and serendipity, it’s the hustle coupled with a laser focus that has served me most.

I first moved to Colorado as an idealistic political consultant hired to work on strategy, messaging and operations for political campaigns. As a young intern living on the east coast, I excelled at community outreach and working on the nuts and bolts of content strategy, helping candidates identity their voters and the best ways to reach them. It was a lot of thinking work, and as a self-described “policy nerd,” the work was right up my alley. I moved to Colorado with a comfortable growth spurt in my professional career; I worked on campaign initiatives in Congressional District 2 and there was a long stretch in public health where I developed prevention programs for hard reduction initiatives. These positions were aimed at the vertical movement of my professional position in the non-profit world, but the fire burning within me to work in arts and music grew hotter and hotter. To stay sharp and ahead of the trends, I perused blogs I enjoyed from an entertainment perspective, finding one in particular out of New York City that was looking for women writers. The blog’s hip-hop and politics related content was right up my alley so I created a quick pitch, sent them an email and before the day was over, was given the green light.

15 FOX & NUG • FALL 2017

Super excited about having a platform to rant and rave about hip-hop music mixed with politics, I created a pen-name so I could write with privacy and agency, and set off to the races. I wrote about Benazhir Bhutto and her controversial return from exile and compared the rough week of brushes with the law had by rapper TI, and the early voices of comment sections on the internet ate it up. Eventually, I branched out to other blogs, began interviewing big name artists and writing editorial content about any and all things rap related. I was also flourishing in real life, finding my position in the Denver scene, meeting new creative characters and building relationships with the local hip-hop scene. Finding it a natural progression from writing about big name artists to writing about artists who were on the come-up, I covered a rap consortium from Denver that eventually landed on the front page of a major hip-hop blog. This caught the news-aggregated attention of the music editor at Westword Newspaper who wanted to know the national writer with the finger on the pulse of the Denver rap scene. A meeting was set-up and he was interested in working with me to see what I could cover and the newness I could bring to the music section. I received my first assignment and was off to the races, but there was one problem; blogs don’t follow a traditional journalism structure in that, having a pen-name was more than fine, it was encouraged. If you’re going to write for print magazines, real names were used only, so the mask was off and Ru Johnson, the rap anthropologist, writer and reviewer was officially on the scene. I wrote about everything and everyone, effectively making hip-hop in the city a part of the press and media conversation, and covering artists who previously had no real estate in the music section. I tackled topics like womens roles in hip-hop, the best ways for artists to portray their live music on stage and interviewed everyone who came through town. It was a wild time, but what I realized is there was a gap between those who made the culture of hip-hop cool and those whose resources were available to these hip-hop heads. Artists weren’t accessing media at a high level, or working with the knowledge necessary to book

themselves on shows, promote their projects with longevity and a multitude of other objectives necessary to be a successful independent artist. Using my knowledge of political campaign structure and the feedback I received from artists I’d covered, Roux Black Consulting Firm was born. Our point is to work with people, places and things that want to expand their consumer demographic. The short version? We make things cool. Throughout my times as a writer at Westword Newspaper (I later went on to write for the Denver Post, 303 Magazine and others including Fox & Nug), I became a bit of a reluctant socialite. I would show up at events and would be placed in a position of “power” as a media spectator and as a result, I basically met all the power players. This gave me a leg up while creating programming for Roux Black clients because I knew what talent buyers were looking for, the things that irked writers when pitched ideas by artists and came armed with a rolodex of talented and hungry rappers. I developed a formula for how to win “campaigns,” during my early and formative years in politics and applied those same principles to organizing brand launches. When you’re running a candidate, the first thing you figure out is how many votes you need to win, next you find out where those people live, then you go get them. Converting audiences to your side of the opinion spectrum using dynamic messaging, persuasive language and by having the wherewithal to do what you say you’re going to do. It’s politics as usual, just like Jay-Z said. And so we swung for the fences and knocked it out of the park on so many occasions (streaks I humbly hope continue), effectively raising the bar for hip-hop consulting, brand expansion and platforms of opportunity for indie artists in town. One sold out show went to the next, relationships were formed with brands and entities in the city of Denver that allowed Roux Black to build on our services for artists, our focus shifted to more consulting outside of the hip-hop genre, and we added venue services to our repertoire. When new spots in the city open up and they want to engage a dynamic and artsy crowd, they call Roux

Black. We utilize a formula of direct to consumer marketing, promotion and influence development to widen the net of interest in crowds tailored to our client’s needs. We throw parties, we develop artists, broker deals and I’m proud to say, this year added a strong arts advocacy program aimed at free tickets to the community called “The Black List.” When we’re nailing it, we’re nailing it; clients are happy, business is pouring in and the accolades are stacking. I don’t spend a ton of time smiling at myself in the mirror, patting myself on the back and chucking back glasses of champagne in celebration of our successes. I applaud my team and we evaluate. What could we have done better, smarter, stronger? Where could we have improved the process? How are the projects we work on reflective of our overall goals to establish smart and sustaining art in an ever-changing city? They say when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. I counter that by positing that you have to feel the work. In order to do things “right, not fast,” you have to dig in, take the time to think things through and always stay on plan “A.” We don’t do a lot of hustling backwards because, as the opening adage implies, you’re paying for this hustle. With your time, stamina, emotional labor and definitely financial investment. I take deep breaths with vacations to places with plenty of water. I spend my evenings when shows aren’t on the schedule watching the news and smoking Blue Dream, sipping cool water and thinking good thoughts to myself. I do my best not to get caught up in the fray of competition, industry gossip and the hoopla of fighting over peanuts. It’s not a perfect formula and I know exactly how many mistakes I’ve made because I keep track of them; making sure I don’t fall into the same hole twice or recognizing red flags when they wave. Mistakes are the fuel though, not the echo chamber of people who think I’m great, or that the work is impressive. The key is to out-hustle your mistakes and recycle your wins into even more wins, investing what’s left in belief in self. It’s tedious, shocking and rewarding but when you’re on the right path (and if you love what you do, it’s safe to say you’re there), the universe has a way of opening more doors. So keep dreaming! When the going gets tough, go back to the original vision, purpose and mission of your hustle. Re-commit to the reasons you’re working through the muck and the mire, dust yourself off and let your ‘to-do’ list do the rest. It’s not easy, that’s to be sure, but if winning was easy, everyone would do it. That, is How to Kill the Game 101. It was all a dream.

Soliders of the Vine fighting for the 22

On a balmy Texas Saturday, I sat among a motley

crew of people watching three very disturbing facts show across the screen in front of us. Veterans commit suicide at a rate two times higher than the general population. More U.S. Veterans have killed themselves than have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Twenty-two U.S. veterans take their own lives every day. We were watching the short film Soldiers of the Vine: Healing War Trauma with Plant Medicine. This documentary is a journey into the hearts and minds of six veterans as they travel to Peru seeking sacred plant medicine to heal their Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. West Point graduate, Blackhawk helicopter pilot, and U.S. Army officer, Ian Benouis, organized this trip after his own experiences with plant medicine. He took along with him five other veterans from across America and the branches of the military struggling with PTSD - Barry Richardson, Dakota Serna, Chris Schickedanz, Matthew Kahl, and Jeremiah Stahuck. Each tell their own story of deployment and return to civilian life in the film. Each story is filled with unresolved trauma and pain. Matt describes this time after deployment under the influence of up to 22 different prescription

medications a month - “I was either falling asleep in the middle of my sentences, or screaming at the ceiling. Always aggressive and angry.” “I was in so much pain I haven’t been able to be successful. I haven’t been able to find focus, clarity, or thought,” says Chris, “I want to stop the cycle of sickness for my children.” In May 2016, seeking peace after exhausting what the VA system had to offer them, these men traveled to northern Peru to participate in a dieta. Dieta, Spanish for “diet,” is a dietary, behavioral, and medicinal regime used for plant-based healing in the Amazon. Based on the individual’s ailments, a shaman administers a cocktail of plant medicines to purify the blood and organs. The most famous and most powerful of the plant medicines these veterans experienced was Ayahuasca. For centuries humans have been drinking this sacred brew of Banisteriopsis caapi vine found in the Amazon. This plant medicine causes powerful hallucinations and has been reported to cause spiritual revelation and a sense of “rebirth.” The film documents the veteran’s three Ayahuasca ceremonies, as well as their “decompression sessions” in which they talk about their powerful experiences. “Trauma was released,” Barry explains, “I found forgiveness for others and for myself.”

43 FOX & NUG • FALL 2017

“For the first time since I joined the Marines, I told myself that I want to live. -Dakota

As a viewer, it was a humbling experience to bear witness to. Not only did these men put their lives on the line in the military, they are brave enough to bare their souls to the public so that others may find a path to healing as they did. There was not a dry eye in the room, once the screening was over and the men stood at the front of the room for a Q&A panel. They expressed their continued journey toward healing, and their advocacy for others. Each member on the panel is involved in efforts to legalize plant medicines such as cannabis, so all veterans have the chance to tackle PTSD from all fronts. Since the government considers cannabis to be a schedule I drug, VA doctors cannot prescribe or help veterans obtain cannabis. Though this may soon change, because of plant-medicine advocates like these veterans. States where cannabis is legal are quickly adopting PTSD into the applicable conditions for medical marijuana. There is still much work to be done to give all veterans the life-saving option to choose plant medicine over opioids or antidepressants. From the creator. There’s no doubt that most of us have an endocannabinoid deficiency. Anxiety, Insomnia, Chronic Pain, Depression and Appetite Loss plague us every day and the pharmaceutical companies would love to get you on plenty of benzos and opiates as possible. With the opioid epidemic at an all time high, we feel like it’s time to move back to nature. While the research arm of cannabinoid efficacy is lacking at best, there is surmounting testimonial evidence coming out every day on how important it is to supplement your natural Endocannabinoid System with CBD, THC, CBG, and CBC. After dealing with my own dad’s cancer and seeing how critical it was in his recovery, I wanted to create an affordable cannabinoid product that could be shipped to people in all 50 states. Verdant Formulas was born. Verdant Formulas makes CBD Oil Drops for people and pets that are available in MCT Coconut Oil and Hemp Oil. 2 ingredients, simple packaging and sublingual delivery make this an affordable and effective way to get your daily dose of CBD. have always been fascinated by the mythical female orgasm. The rush of chemicals, the sensations, the intense feeling of a climax and the resulting satisfaction… Magazines write about it, therapists offer advice on it and yet so many women are still searching for that feeling. At FOX & NUG, we feel for the thousands of women who suffer from proverbial “blue balls” and we intend to bridge the gap by offering some insight on how to reach the elusive female orgasm.

The Pleasure Gap

75% of men will have an orgasm during sex. Conversely, only 33% of women will have an orgasm during sex. 80% claim to have trouble reaching orgasm through intercourse alone and 10% will never have an orgasm. Could you imagine how frustrating it can be to have sex dozens of times and maybe only reach an orgasm twice? While I do enjoy the occasional quickie, it takes special time to bake a real cream pie.

UN D E R S TA N D H E R A N ATO MY The Clit

The clit, or clitoris is probably the most important piece of the orgasm puzzle. Do you know where the clitoris is? Do you know how to touch it? The male penis can not physically stimulate the clit during intercourse so it’s going to need some extra attention. Toys are great for accomplishing this task, but tongues and fingers work wonders too!

The G Spot

While it’s existence has also been contested by some, probably male, scientists based on “lack of anatomical proof” we suspect that you can find it. With your woman on her back, insert your fingers palm up and give curl as if you were telling her to come here.

F ORE PLAY

Other Fun Spots

Necks, bellies, insides of thighs, lower backs and butts. Her whole body craves your affection. Try putting your fingers in her mouth, or rub them across her lips. Spank her, tickle her, blindfold her, and play with her hair.

NA I L T HE T E CHN I Q U E Nurture the Nurturer

Women are notorious nurturers, givers and mothers. It’s impossible to give from an empty cup and for many women, if they don’t feel loved, safe or happy, they won’t reach an orgasm. Run a bath, light some candles or give her a sensual massage. And please don’t skip the foreplay!

Foreplay

Foreplay is an essential component of mindblowing sex. It builds excitement and intimacy, it sets the mood and provides space for easier orgasms. Nothing gets us wetter than teasing and touching. Massage her thighs, pay special attention to her clit and labia. And if you’re not sure which she loves more, just ask! The mind enjoys teasing as much as the body does!

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Some people like a LOT of pressure on the clit while others like a very light amount of pressure. Circular motions, a mix of penetration and clitoral stimulation, a little bit of booty play? Ask her to tell you, or show you, exactly how she likes to be touched and put it to practice. Again, here is the place to put in the work, don’t forget the foreplay.

Toys

Get some toys for love’s sake. Many women can’t reach an orgasm vaginally, so it’s important to stimulate the clitoris. We personally love Eva, a hands-free, strap-free, clitoral vibrator that can be used during sex. We also love using finger vibrators, pumps and remote controlled panty teasers! Oooh!

W O ME N , T I ME TO TAKE CO N T R O L If you are one of the women who struggles with reaching an orgasm, you are not alone. Here are some tools that you can use to help bridge the gap.

Your vagina might need a workout

Ever heard of kegels? What about Vaginal Kung Fu? There are several techniques that you can practice that strengthen your muscles so you can squeeze down on every inch of pleasure while increasing your chances of having a powerful vaginal orgasm.

Your lover is not a mind reader

Sure, we all wish our lovers could read our minds. And while the passive aggressive sighs and comments should do the trick, the only remedy for your pleasure deficit is openly communicating to your partner. It might seem like a hard conversation to have but it’s totally worth it and, if they’re a lover worth having, I can guarantee they would love to know what could get you there.

Relax

Clear your mind. I know you’re frustrated. I’m frustrated for you! But it’s going to be nearly impossible to reach the big O if you have a monkey on your back so you really owe it to yourself set the intention to enjoy yourself in this intimate and empowering experience. Resolve to deal with your never ending list of problems another time. This is your time to be in the moment, and forget the bills, the deadlines, the dirty dishes, the laundry and anything else that isn’t specifically integral to a mind blowing climax.

#MeToo

I know how hard it can be to allow yourself to be vulnerable after sexual assault and how long the journey can seem when you want to start enjoying sex again. If you have been sexually assaulted I would highly recommend seeking therapy. Talk to a professional and your lover, friends or family and get the support you need and take back your sex life by establishing a foundation for a healthy sexuality.
