GLOBAL FINALS 2022 FOWLER GLOBAL SOCIAL INNOVATION CHALLENGE

Our Mission at the Kroc School of Peace Studies is to equip and empower students to go on to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. The Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge is paramount towards accomplishing that goal.

After two years of a virtual program, this year presented a unique opportunity for us at the Kroc School. We were determined to convene global social innovators back together in-person so that connections could form and ideas could take shape. With similar conviction, we committed to assuring those teams who could not join us in San Diego, would be able to receive mentorship and compete confidently.

Our Campus Showcase, where teams across The University of San Diego competed to represent USD at the Global Finals, began by putting impact into action. Spurred by the atrocities happening in Ukraine, community members from across USD joined us at The Kroc School for an impact-focused service project. Buttressed by the beat of pop music and adorned in hair nets, we packed 10,000 meals that were then shipped to the Polish and Ukrainian border, to help feed those impacted by the war.

The range of innovations from University of San Diego students seeking to advance to the Global Finals included but were not limited to catalyzing affordable and clean energy, reducing inequalities, and growing decent work and economic growth. The two social entrepreneurs who advanced to the Global Finals exemplify the diversity of changemaking we are fostering at USD. Hosting this year’s Global Finals in San Diego presented a unique opportunity to develop the very first hybrid experience for our global network. With half of our global teams pitching virtually, over 65 innovation professionals volunteered to serve as judges and mentors for the Global Finals. That generosity afforded our students immeasurable wisdom and expertise as they crafted and pitched their innovations. And it helped us select many dynamic winners!

In our effort to support as many young entrepreneurs as possible, this year’s Global Finals saw Eighteen teams receive seed venture funding from the $75,000 awarded. We are excited to follow the success of the innovations taking shape all across the globe, and connect burgeoning innovators with those who are well on their way to positive social, environmental, and economic impact.

WELCOME

With teams convening in San Diego from across the globe, we knew that no trip to America’s Finest City would be complete without three main ingredients: Sun, Surf, & Tacos. Whether it was throwing the frisbee and playing spikeball while enjoying the sunset at Mission Bay Park, devouring tacos at Oscar’s in Pacific Beach, or Private Surf Lessons with San Diego Surf School, students certainly got a taste of San Diego! One of the best parts of this year’s Global Finals was the connections created and unbridled joy we saw from students, faculty, and judges - that will be remembered for a lifetime.

None of this would be possible without the incredible generosity of Ron and Alexis Fowler, and our growing network of supporters, mentors, and university partners.

There's a lot of work ahead. I'm confident that our growing network of global changemakers are up to the task. My goal is to support them every step of the way, as we seek to shape a future that flourishes with prosperity. I hope you will join us.

The Impact Service Project was in partnership with an alum of the Fowler GSIC - 2050 Smoothie Company. It was also co-sponsored by the Alumni Association & Changemaker Hub.

USD CAMPUS SHOWCASE Students across campus spent months working with faculty and staff from The Kroc School, crafting their ideas and honing their pitches. On April 29th, 2022, a diverse cohort of undergraduate and graduate students pitched their innovative solutions to a panel of expert judges with the hopes of winning seed venture funding, and the chance to represent the University of San Diego at the Global Finals. Many student teams shined, and after difficult deliberation, the judges selected two outstanding USD social innovators to compete on the global stage.

FIRST PLACE - $2,500 The Wezesha Binti Foundation Our mission is to provide lifelong sustainable solutions to address period poverty and period stigma facing underserved menstruators through education, aid, and empowerment, reducing teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, and adverse health effects.

SECOND PLACE - $1,500 En i Bottle Envi Bottle is an innovative, insulated water bottle with integrated reusable utensils, straw, and bag. This was developed to reduce waste which is a major global challenge.

THE GLOBAL FINALS The Global Finals featured 41 global ventures, whose student social entrepreneurs spanned across continents to include 24 universities from 12 different countries. Students pitched their innovative solutions aimed at solving the world’s most pressing challenges, and competed for $75,000 in seed venture funding.

GRAND PRIZE WINNERS FIRST PLACE - $25,000 + Brand Identity Package from Cubic Orange Gazelle The vicious cycle of overgrazing and desertification in Sub-Saharan Africa driven by human impact and rising global temperatures and the absence of a means for impoverished and uneducated ranchers to sustainably manage their land places millions of people at economic risk and causes massive ecological deterioration, as 60% of wild grazers have died. Gazelle is the one-stop-shop, accessible, and simple-to-use offline mobile application built for ranchers that calculates the sustainable carrying capacity of a pasture, provides comprehensive land and livestock management, and includes a verified carbon offset trading platform to empower ranchers to make confident, data-driven decisions while being rewarded through carbon sequestration.

Specifically, our solution is towed agricultural equipment consisting of interchangeable robotic tools capable of precisely and automatically remove weeds.

BIOMILQ is a woman-owned, science-led, and parent-centered biotech startup developing novel technology to make human milk outside the body. Winning the grand prize and the Women’s Innovator Award in 2020, Co-founder and CEO Michelle Egger has since raised $21 million in Series A funding, including $3.5 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Leatherheart is a B-Corp certified company that utilizes textile fabric waste in Venezuela, to create plush toys and dolls for children. The company trains and employs women from underserved areas of the country to sew and embroider the dolls, and in the past two years has sold over 10,000 unique puppets and dolls for children in Venezuela.

Most international students have trouble finding housing due to the lack of a personal credit score and social security number. Hugs Intl is a web platform that uses the same documentation that students provide to obtain their VISA, in order to make the home search process accessible, enjoyable, and safe for both students living in the United States and landlords.

BrilliantBiome is a precision medicine platform that makes gut health understandable. With an at-home kit, the venture translates complex gut microbiome into actionable suggestions and provide dietary guides for users. Founder Dr. Sierra Simpson won 2nd Prize at the 2020 Global Finals.

Reco Boards - Uni ersidad Del Desarrollo Reco Boards transforms plastic beverage cartons into sustainable and creative furniture and sports equipment. Reco Boards repurposes the equivalent number of food packaging that a Chilean consumes in 25 years by recycling more than 1,500 plastic containers per one of its garden planters.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS It has been two weeks since the start of the Fowler Global Innovation Challenge, and I simply wanted to sincerely thank and congratulate you for the great event that it was.

As French Canadians that had not pitched our project out of Quebec or in English when we arrived, we were quite anxious about the contest. But from the morning breakfast on Tuesday to the beach on Sunday, it was such a great experience that the entire team will remember forever.

The challenge was very well organized and it was awesome to see the other teams pitch their ideas. The different celebrations at the end of the day were also such a great idea for teams like us who came from outside of San Diego, as it not only gave us the opportunity to connect with other startups, but as it showed us how great San Diego is. Being back in Quebec, I don’t see how I can eat another taco without thinking of Oscar’s.

We are extremely proud to be the 3rd grand prize winner, it was such a challenge for us that this recognition is greatly appreciated.

So once again, thank you very much for hosting this event, and we hope to see you again in the near future.
