PLASTIC ARTIST JOANA BANDEIRA ROCHA Hello my name's Joana Bandeira Rocha, I was born in Luanda in 1979 but raised in Olhão. I started crafting with fabrics and materials, teaching myself the art of reusing and creating decorative pieces. Recently, I've been involved in Community Artistic Practices, organizing exhibitions or street art installations in various cultural and educational spaces in the Algarve. I work with community groups on environmental and heritage themes, aiming for a sense of unity within the city through art. My main focus is Fine Arts, but I graduated in Education and Training Sciences from Ualg. Currently, I'm pursuing a Master's in Product Design at Esad in Caldas da Rainha.

CRAFTSMAN JOÃO JESUS My name is João Jesus, a craftsman, inventor, and self-taught individual raised on Faro Beach. I began in 2017 by crafting small pieces - scorpions, fishes, and crabs - using spoons and forks, later progressing to crafting trophies and clocks using parts from used motorcycles and bicycles. Gears, engine crankshafts, suspension springs, transmission chains everything contributes to creating unique metalwork that has captivated both machine enthusiasts and nature lovers at my workshop in the Moto Clube de Faro. One of João Jesus's charismatic pieces is The Seahorse, which aims to raise awareness about the threats faced by this species, be it through illegal capture or the broader issue of marine pollution.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE PIECES USED IN THE DECORATION FOR THIS EVENING

“Basket or hoop net” - A utensil consisting of two open metal hoops interconnected by a metal structure, surrounded by a net with a mesh size of at least 16 mm. It is operated by the practitioner's hand through a line or cord and is used to lift large specimens during shore fishing.

"Murejona” - Spherical artefact made of intertwined wicker, wire, or stainless steel loops, equipped with an open upper hole and a closed lower one, where bait is placed to catch fish and octopus.

“Covo”- is a conical-shaped trap, similar to the 'murejona,' and is used along the coast for catching conger eel, eel, and lobster.

“Alcatruzes”- are clay pots with a small hole at the base. They are used from December to March along the coast and are primarily used for catching octopus.

“Dragas”- These are fishing tools that stir up the seabed to capture mollusks and are maneuvered in shallow waters. They are equipped with a sort of bag or sieve that allows water, sand, and mud to escape, while retaining the captured species.
