Background to the Company Fred. Olsen Ltd can trace its origins back to 1848 when three Norwegian brothers embarked on an international shipping business.

More than 171 years later, the family business, now in its fifth generation, is still going strong. Based in the UK, the travel aspect of the company has always been at the forefront, with new products and destinations constantly being introduced.

Established in 1988, Fred. Olsen Travel is first and foremost a travel agency and also acts as a tour operator, general sales agent, preferred agent and corporate travel provider, plus operates a franchise business. Fred. Olsen Travel is a completely separate business to Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, although in our own right and from our own merit, we sell enough Fred. Olsen cruises to our customers to be their No. 2 agent in the UK. Currently we have 10 retail outlets in East Anglia, which were joined by 5 more retail outlets in Dorset and Hampshire - making a total of 15 retail branches, mostly on the high street and some within department stores.

More recently, it has diversified online with the introduction of Fred.\ Holidays, a tailor-made specialist offering holidays through a series of specialist sales areas including ocean cruises, river cruises, rail holidays and safaris. Fred.\ Holidays continues to expand its portfolio with authentic offerings all over the world.

Additionally, Fred. Olsen Travel is the UK general sales agent for Star Clippers and Amadeus River Cruises, which means that all travel agents in the UK can only purchase these products through us.

All the other holiday products we sell, we do so as an agent for the tour or cruise operator.

Our strength is our independence, ensuring that we can offer bespoke holidays by researching the best options from the whole travel market. Calling upon the widest choice of specialist travel companies, we will always aim to offer the right holiday for the customer, at the right price.

We are a Member of ABTA, under group membership number (V3510), all of our retail outlets and separate brands also have their own ABTA membership. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service and follow ABTA’s Code of Conduct.

We are also part of the Advantage consortia, which helps us with our overall commercial terms for the products we sell less of, and allows for a collective commission level and incentives as a group.

Our strongest asset is our staff, who all really do make the difference when it comes to selling holiday’s. We invest in the knowledge and expertise of our staff sending them all over the world to experience the products and destinations we sell. Coupled with the passion for travel that our staff have in abundance, this makes our service really hard to beat. We also run an excellent apprenticeship scheme.

Whilst we cannot guarantee a position at the end of an apprenticeship, it is a great opportunity to gain some experience and a qualification.

We also have access to group central services of IT, Finance, HR and Facilities which are also based in Ipswich and currently located in separate buildings.

Fred. Olsen Travel currently employs 139 people across the business and has 64 franchisees trading as GoCruise & Travel in the UK (correct at April 2021).

This part of the business started as Cruise Network in 2001 where it focused on selling cruise holidays to existing customers and through reader offers in national press and magazines. In 2008, and with the acquisition of Cruise Options sales enhanced almost overnight.

In 2013, following the introduction of Fred.\ Holidays, the specialist cruise sales area was developed offering all mainstream, niche and luxury cruise products including opportunities to tailor-make departures to the customers requirements.

Background to the brand Established in 2013, Fred.\ Holidays has become recognised within the UK, through travel agent partners and direct consumers, as a tour operator providing quality tailor-made travel arrangements. The primary customer focus is on Free Independent Travellers, although products also include group and escorted group holidays.

An Award Winning Franchise

Background to the brand Fred. Olsen Travel acquired the franchise brand GoCruise & Travel in 2004 from Victoria Travel. The business mostly specialises in selling all mainstream, luxury and niche cruise holidays via its franchisee network to their local markets and existing customer databases and also many of the franchisees also sell land based holidays.

Franchisees are supported by means of our after sales administration department, franchise development team and marketing team. The administration department deals with both the franchisee and their customer once the initial sale has been made. They effectively work to ensure a smooth process for the customers holiday until their time of departure.

Marketing roles support the franchisee with their promotional ideas, producing collateral to drive consumer leads.

Our franchise development team work with franchiseed to grow their individual businesses, exploring and co-ordinating ideas, arranging training and events, recruiting and ensuring there are the necessary business processes in place.

There are opportunities to work for this part of our business and support the franchisees, also there is opportunity to purchase your own franchise and work for yourself.

Currently GoCruise & Travel has 64 franchisees across the UK.

Background to the brand Fred. Olsen Travel Agents started in 1988 in Ipswich and over the years has established retail outlets in East Anglia and more recently on the South Coast of England.

Some of these branches have been purchases of existing travel agencies and some have been completely new start up shops. In 2008 Fred. Olsen Travel acquired Thorpe Travel in Norwich which still trades as Thorpe Travel and in 2015 acquired Dorchester Travel in Dorset which also retains its trading name as part of Fred. Olsen Travel Agents.

In 2019 opened a new shop in Hythe and during the Covid Pandemic acquired Milford Travel which operates from the Lymington shop. Also in 2021 set up a brand new shop in Beccles.

In 2013 Fred. Olsen Travel purchased TravelQuest of Woodbridge and decided to run this brand alongside Fred.

Olsen Travel Agents and in 2016 opened a second branch of TravelQuest in Ipswich and in 2019 aquired Framlingham Travel, which trades under the TravelQuest umbrella.

Fred. Olsen Travel also acquired Travel Norwich Airport in 2020 and operates this as a specialist brand within the east anglia shops and has also created Travel Bournemouth Airport to give the same focus to local departures on the south coast.

In total Fred. Olsen Travel has 15 retail outlets, 10 in East Anglia and 5 on the South Coast, as follows: Fred. Olsen Travel in store at COES, Ipswich Felixstowe; Bury St Edmunds; Colchester; Beccles Fred. Olsen Travel in store at JARROLD, Norwich Thorpe Travel Agents, Norwich TravelQuest Ipswich & Woodbridge and Framlingham Travel.
