Let’s build a sundial

Getting to know the components that make it up.

Our clock is the sun and it comprises three components: the spring and summer side, the autumn and winter side and the gnomon. The two first components will take into account the time of the year in which we shall build the sundial:

• The upper side shall read the time in spring and summer.

• The lower side shall read the time in autumn and winter.

Spring and summer side

Autumn and winter side

The gnomon template is the one that shall project the shadow; you must take into account the latitude of the city you are in.

In order to do so, you must select one of the four templates proposed in accordance with the latitude of your city. If it doesn’t appear, select the latitude of a close city.

Let’s build a sundial

Cut out and paste.

Now that you already know the parts, you must cut them out. Once you have them cut out, you must paste them on a cardboard piece so that they are more resistant. Once pasted, cut them out again. Be careful! The sides of the sundial must be pasted by lining up the centers of the circumference of each side. By doing so you will get a visible sundial that you shall be able to use the whole year long.

Spring and summer side

Autumn and winter side

Fit the parts.

Once you have cut and pasted them, you have everything you need in order to complete the sundial. The last step shall be fitting the components as shown in the illustration.

Upper side: spring-summer

Lower side: autumn-winter

Positioning the sundial.

The sundial is completed and the only thing pending is the last step: positioning it so that it informs us about the time. Have a look at the image.

In spring-summer the shadow shall be projected on the upper side; in autumn-winter it shall be projected on the lower side.

The solar time

Once your are done building and positioning the sundial, the shadow it projects shall indicate you the time of the day. In spring-summer the shadow shall be projected on the upper side; in autumn-winter it shall be projected on the lower side.

Warning: Please bear in mind that sundials do not show the time of conventional clocks (civil time), but the solar time. Therefore it is necessary to make a little correction: The time that clocks show is advanced one hour in winter (from the last Sunday in October until the last Sunday in March) and two hours in the summer. Thus, we must add 1 or 2 hours to the solar time, depending on whether it is winter or summer.

Look at your sundial at 3 different times of the day and write down in the following table the time that the shadow indicates (this is the so-called solar time) and the time that a conventional clock indicates (this is the local time).
