Socchieve. The small church of San Martino, simple and well-proportioned, blends into the surrounding landscape with the grace of a product of nature. It contains a fresco cycle by Gianfranco da Tolmezzo (1493), which gives a good idea of his style. This is based on a solid composition which allows him to create visions of sacred events in fully-realized Renais-
sance space. At times his vision is still permeated by a Gothic sensitivity in his generous use of ornament. The frescoes in the apse combine touches of preciosity with unadorned simplicity of narration and the ritual quality of devotional images of Doctors of the Church and the Apostles. Their concrete realism is closely tied to the everyday problems of the faithful.
