Tips for beginning whitetail management on a new property.

4 1 3 4

Water, Water, Water!

It can’t be said enough. Whitetail needs plenty of access to water. The more troughs, ponds, or other water sources you can provide, the better off your herd will be.

Scouting

Starting from scratch can be difficult, especially if you have never managed a property for whitetail before. Each region is different, and even a few miles can make a difference in genetic potential of a whitetail herd. These tips will get you started in creating your own wildlife management plan. 2

You need to know your herd, or at least an estimate on age, sex ratio, and fawn count. Aerial surveys can be very beneficial on larger properties, however, many landowners do not have that option. Night time surveys (driving around with a spotlight and counting what you see) and trail cameras are great inexpensive options for scouting. This will allow you to set your goals for your management plan.

Bedding Cover

One of the biggest problems many landowners face is over crowding a property with blinds and feeders. Deer need areas to rest and feel secure, away from predators and away from you. Allowing them to have areas of very little pressure will allow them to rest and will keep them around your property.

Supplemental Feeding

Although many people may disgree, supplemental feeding is not completely necessary. Deer are survivors. They have been living here for much longer than the feed companies have been around. However, if you can fit it in your budget, it is a huge benefit. Whether it be corn, cotton seed, protein pellets, food plots, or any of the other types of supplemental feeding, the more you can do the better. Detemine your budget and take advantage of what you can!

Wildlife management is a long and complicated topic. There are hundreds of o ther “tips“ I could provide. However, if you can get started with these 4 tips, you will be on the right track! If you have any questions, I am always happy to help!
