St Swithun’s School celebrates an impressive year of academic success
St Swithun’s School in Winchester is celebrating an impressive year of academic success, with outstanding A-Level and GCSE results. The school achieved its strongest set of A-Level results in a non-pandemic year since 2015, with 92% of grades at A* to B and over two-thirds at A*/A. Half of the year group earned grades of AAA or higher, with 40% achieving at least one A*. This academic excellence has led students to secure places at prestigious universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College, LSE, Durham, and St Andrews.
In the two largest A-Level subjects, nearly 80% of students in mathematics and 83% in chemistry achieved A*/A grades, far surpassing national averages. The students also excelled in subjects such as French, German, history, politics, and psychology, with a high percentage earning top grades.
Academic, Music and Sport scholar Louisa will be heading to Cambridge University to study Modern and Medieval Languages
after obtaining three A*s. She will be joined by Esther who achieved four A*s and will be studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge.
Eunice also achieved an incredible A*A*A*A and will be reading Accounting & Finance at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Rhiannon excelled in her exams and obtained four A*s. She will head to Exeter University to study Natural Sciences.
Head girl Alice and Deputy Head girl Annabel (both pictured) are both off to Oxford University to read History after achieving A*A*A and A*A*A* respectively.
Meanwhile, the school’s 2024 GCSE results were equally impressive, with 80% of grades at 7/A or above and 30% at the highest grade 9. Over half of the year group achieved six or more grades at 9/8/A*, with a quarter gaining nine or more top grades. There were particularly strong performances in subjects like history, biology, modern languages, and further mathematics, where 88% of students earned 9/8 grades.
Among the year’s top performers was Chloe, who earned nine grade 9s and one grade 8, and plans to pursue A-Levels in biology, English literature, history, and mathematics at St Swithun's. Boarder
Claire from Beijing excelled with 11 grade 9s and one grade 8 while contributing to the school’s musical productions and mathematics competitions. Marharyta, a student from Ukraine, achieved a remarkable six grade 9s, three grade 8s, and one grade 7, and will continue her musical studies at the Royal College of Music alongside her A-Levels.
Headmistress Jane Gandee commented, “Our results reflect the energy and curiosity our students bring to their studies. At St Swithun's, we develop independent thinking and a passion for learning that prepares our students for success at university and beyond. They not only excel academically but also thrive in areas such as sport, music, drama, and volunteering.”
Head of Sixth Form, Nick Fyfe added, “We are thrilled with the outstanding results our students have achieved. Their success is not just a reflection of their academic abilities, but also of the personal growth and confidence they have developed during their time in the Sixth Form. Our tailored approach has empowered them, both as students and as individuals.”

Resolving disputes in workplace with MacDonald Oates Solicitors
One way of resolving disputes in the workplace is via a Settlement Agreement. We regularly advise businesses and individuals on such agreements, so what are they?
A Settlement Agreement is a legally binding agreement between an employer and an employee where the employee agrees to settle their potential claims. In return, the employer will usually agree to pay financial compensation.
Hampshire charity celebrates share of £1million fund
A children’s cancer charity in Hampshire has received a £1,000 funding boost as part of Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards to support its vital work.
Hannah’s Holiday Home Appeal provides free memory-making family breaks in their luxurious lodges, for children with cancer and their families.
The £1,000 donation made as part of the Movement for Good Awards will go towards funding outdoor equipment for families to use and play with in the holiday homes, including a variety of games and toys. The charity has around 150 families per year visiting the homes, which means equipment needs to be regularly updated.
Pam Marshall, Officer Manager of Hannah’s Home Appeal has spoken out following the overwhelming support from the public, “Thank you for supporting us through your nominations. We are overjoyed to have receive the £1,000 donation. This will help bring big smiles to lots of little faces of children and their families."
Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards is giving away over £1million to charities across the year and invites members of the public to nominate causes close to their hearts. 150 awards of £1,000 have been donated to charities across the UK and Ireland. Further winners will be revealed later in the year and Hampshire residents are encouraged to keep nominating by visiting https://movementforgood.com
Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive at Benefact Group, said: “We would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause as
A Settlement Agreement must satisfy several conditions in order to waive statutory employment claims. One of these conditions is that the employee must have received legal advice from a relevant independent adviser, for example, a qualified lawyer.
Other than the legal requirements, the contents of a Settlement Agreement are agreed between the employer and employee. Examples of common clauses include:
• Compensation for loss of employment
• Confidentiality
• Return of the employer’s property
• Agreed reference from the employer
When can they be used?
Employers should not simply offer a Settlement Agreement to an employee without taking legal advice first. This is because every employer owes their employees a duty of trust and confidence and must be careful not to breach this duty, leading to claims for unfair dismissal. There is a process for offering a Settlement Agreement which involves having a ‘protected conversation’ and the employer should take advice to ensure this is done properly.
If you would like help with a Settlement Agreement, or any other employment law topic, please contact us at MacDonald Oates Solicitors on 01730 268211 or linda.wilson@macdonaldoates.co.uk

Passing on your wealth through pensions
How to protect your family’s financial future
The abolition of the lifetime allowance could make pensions an even more attractive way of passing on wealth to the next generation.
Protecting your family from financial difficulties isn’t just about having money to provide for the long term. It’s also about ensuring your loved ones are provided for should the worst happen.
When it comes to financial protection, the options can seem overwhelming. However, consulting a financial adviser can help you choose the right cover for your personal circumstances.
Pensions can usually be passed on to your loved ones free from inheritance tax (IHT). Now that there is effectively no limit on the amount of money you can tax-efficiently build up in pensions over your lifetime, considering your estate plan could allow you to make a bigger difference to your family’s financial future.
Life insurance
A financial adviser can create an estate plan that suits your needs and maximises money. In the meantime, here are some points to consider.
How are pensions taxed on death?
Life insurance pays out a lump sum on death, which could be used to pay off the mortgage and provide a cash buffer. The cost of the cover will depend on factors like your age and health.
Pensions are tax-efficient for passing wealth to beneficiaries.
If you have children or an outstanding mortgage, you should consider a life insurance policy. There are several different types of policy to choose from: whole of life insurance, level term insurance, and decreasing term insurance. An adviser can help you decide on the right one for you.
If you die before age 75, benefits can usually be paid taxfree from a defined contribution pension. If you die after age 75, they will be taxed at the beneficiaries’ marginal rate of income tax. As long as the funds stay in drawdown, they will also remain IHT free.
Income protection
It’s really important to understand what your annual allowance is and whether you’re at risk of breaching it.
You might want to consider this cover if you don’t have enough savings to cover you if you were to become seriously ill, or you don’t have an employee benefits package.
For this tax year, the maximum tax-free lump sum (known as the Lump Sum Allowance) that you can draw from pensions is capped at £268,275 (unless you have lifetime allowance protection).
Family income benefit
What else do I need to consider?
Maxing out your annual allowance may not be right for you.
Instead of paying out a single lump sum, this policy provides a regular, tax-free income for a set period, such as 20 years. It’s considered a relatively inexpensive form of life cover.
Private medical insurance
You can’t access money in DC pensions until age 55 (57 from April 2028). If you need money before then, ISAs or other savings may be a better option. ISAs can also be a useful way of building tax-efficient income in retirement. Other investment options could be worth considering, such as venture capital trusts (VCTs) or Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs). For some, lifetime gifting could be preferable to see loved ones benefit during your lifetime.
Private medical insurance (PMI) will pay for the cost of private healthcare and could enable you to see a specialist more quickly than under the NHS. If you don’t have PMI through work, you can pay monthly or annual premiums for a policy.
Next steps
Inheritance planning is complex - and that’s where getting some guidance comes in to provide confidence that you’ve laid the firmest foundations for your family’s future.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.
6 April 2024 saw the introduction of the Lump Sum and Death Benefit Allowance (LSDBA) which limits the amount of tax-free lump sum that can be paid in your lifetime and on death. For this tax year, this is £1,073,100, but could be higher if you have a form of Lifetime Allowance protection. If the limit is breached, the excess lump sum is taxable at the beneficiary’s marginal income tax rate.
Income protection can provide a tax-free income if you are unable to work because of an accident or illness.
You can choose when the payments start, such as six or 12 months, with longer deferral periods resulting in lower premiums.
Income protection can be particularly valuable for the selfemployed who do not have any cover through an employer.
How could the LTA abolition affect estate planning?
You can choose from short-term cover to pay an income over one or two years and long-term cover to run until retirement, or when the policy ends, whichever is sooner.
Critical illness
In March 2023, the government announced that the lifetime allowance (LTA) was being scrapped. This was a cap on the amount of money you could save in pensions over your lifetime without triggering a tax charge. The LTA was abolished on 6 April 2024.
Any other limits to be aware of?
Critical illness cover pays out a lump sum on diagnosis of critical illnesses covered by the policy, such as heart attack, stroke and cancer. The sum could be used to pay off debts, cover outgoings such as school fees, or to adapt living arrangements.
The pension annual allowance is £60,000 (2024/25 tax year), or 100% of UK relevant earnings for most people, whichever is lower. If you exceed the annual allowance, you’ll have to pay a tax charge.

Discover the Downs! New project connects children with National Park
Hundreds of schoolchildren from across the South East will be able to enjoy the wonders of the South Downs National Park thanks to a major funding boost.
The “Discover the Downs” initiative will get scores of children into the great outdoors, bringing exciting experiences to youngsters who don’t have easy access to National Parks.
Schools from across Hampshire and Sussex –with over 30 per cent of their pupils eligible for pupil premium funding – are now being invited to apply for fully-funded visits to the National Park.
Activities might include “discovery days” to develop a connection with nature, including learning about conservation, bushcraft, wild art and natural sciences, all within the breathtaking surrounds of the National Park. As the South Downs is one of only 22 International Dark Sky Reserves, children will have the opportunity to enjoy stargazing, learn about nocturnal wildlife and spend a night under the stars.
The National Park has also teamed up with The Sustainability Centre, near Petersfield, to offer fun residential stays for children, as well as Goodwood Education Trust, near Chichester, to offer farm visits.
The initiative, made possible by funding from Defra as part of Defra’s ongoing support for access to nature, will build on the success of Generation Green. The project, led by the Youth Hostel Association working with a range of partners including National Parks, supported schools as they recovered from the pandemic, connecting over 100,000 young people across the UK with nature and the environment.
Helping to deliver “Discover the Downs” for the National Park Authority will be experienced outdoor learning specialist Gina Mitchell. Gina said: “As the school term begins, we’re incredibly excited to be starting this initiative to help children discover the South Downs, many
of whom will be visiting this amazing landscape for the very first time.
“We’re keen for schools to apply as soon as possible as there’s a limited time window for this funding to be spent and there’s also limited availability, so do not delay your application!
“We want to work with teachers to develop action-packed school trips or residential stays that give children the most rewarding experiences and complement their current studies.”
A wide body of research has shown that connecting with nature and learning outdoors can benefit children’s mental and physical health, including assisting brain development, increasing attainment, supporting social skills, and reducing anxiety. A recent report showed that more than 500 children a day are being referred to NHS mental health services for anxiety.
Amanda Elmes, Learning, Outreach and Volunteer Lead for the National Park, said: “Children are the future custodians of everything around us, including precious wildlife and the countryside, and it’s so important that each and every one of them can experience a National Park.
“There’s compelling evidence of a growing disconnect between young people and the
natural environment and National Parks offer a tremendous learning space to address this problem. Anxiety is at record levels in children, so projects like this are more important than ever.
“The sad truth is that not all children have access to green space and that’s why initiatives like this are so vital. Being curious about the natural world is a life-long skill that all children should have the opportunity to develop.”
“Discover the Downs” continues the South Downs National Park’s ongoing commitment to young people. Since the National Park was created in 2010, more than 40,000 young people have been able to access learning opportunities in the great outdoors thanks to various grant schemes from the National Park Authority and South Downs National Park Trust.

A History of Hyde Abbey
In 1110AD the Benedictine monks of New Minister moved their library, relics and the bodies of King Alfred, his wife Alswitha and son, Edward the Elder to the newly built Hyde Abbey to the north of the city of Winchester. Their bodies were laid to rest before the high altar of the great stone church and the Abbey became a popular pilgrimage destination.
In 1539 the abbey was surrendered to Henry VIII’s commissioners as part of the king’s programme to dissolve the monasteries. The Hyde Abbey monks were pensioned off, its treasures were destroyed or dispersed and the buildings were reduced to rubble.
All that remains of the abbey today are a magnificent stone gateway, an arch that used to span the abbey millstream and the church built for the pilgrims and laybrothers, now the nave and chancel of St Bartholomew’s Parish Church.
Why was Alfred Buried at Hyde Abbey?
When Alfred took the throne in 871,
Winchester became the capital city of Wessex and a part of his series of fortified towns built to withstand Viking invaders. The cathedral and royal palace stood at the heart of the city and in the last year of Alfred’s reign additional land was bought as the demand for space increased. When Alfred died he was buried in Old Minster and when the work on New Minster, undertaken by his son Edward, was complete his body was moved. In 1109 Henry I ordered the New Minster to be removed to the suburb of Hyde Mead, to the north of the city walls, just outside the gate. Alfred’s body and that of his wife and son were moved to the new abbey in 1110 and remained there until 1788 when some convicts, building their own prison on the site of the old abbey, chanced upon his grave, stole the lead from his coffin and dispersed his bones.
Hyde900s mission

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)
Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life.
But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.
Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.
From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.
Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.
The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.
What is Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.
Feel good…
Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?
This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.
Does the treatment hurt?
We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.
We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.
Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Nature's Nook is a zero waste shop and retail store dedicated to reducing environmental impact by minimizing waste throughout the shopping experience. Unlike traditional stores, which often rely on excessive packaging, a zero waste shop focuses on sustainability by offering products without unnecessary wrapping. Customers are encouraged to bring their own refillable containers, bags, and jars to purchase loose goods such as grains, spices, nuts, cereals, snacks, frozen items, pick 'n' mix sweets and household items like cleaning products and toiletries. Recently we were privileged to have been able to make links with New Life Domestic, a charity helping individuals and families, that are starting a new life, free of abuse and who need a hand to set up their new homes in the Southampton, Eastleigh, West End, Hedge End, Botley and surrounding areas.
They operate on a not-for-profit basis, providing items such as household furniture and other items needed for both Men, Women and Children to help them build their new lives.
We helped them out financially recently which has helped them access better storage facilities for the donated items that they are given, and we are now looking forward to working with them in the future. Over the last few years we have helped several families in a similar, but smaller way and together hopefully we can help others rebuild their lives.
Hampshire Medical Fund
We have formed strong links over the last couple of years with Hampshire Medical Fund, who were instrumental in getting the ball rolling with Bishop’s Waltham Rotary, sourcing Incubators to send to Ukraine, of which we have so far sent 8 incubators with another 4 being sourced imminently. Because of this, Hampshire medical Fund contacted us recently regarding a specialist Neonatal Transfer Trolley they were attempting to fund, for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, to aid the safe transfer of critically ill young babies and we were delighted to be able to complete their target figure by donating £700.00.
Finally…
We were very pleased to be able to award an honorary membership to Doug Draper, one of our Founder members, from when our Club was founded in early 1989, he has remained an active member ever since. We were also recently able to recognise the significant work and dedication to the club that two of our other members have made who, although they have not been with us as long as Doug, have both made a significant impact towards the club’s charitable work. These two members, Jason Rule and Ian Fletcher were awarded the Paul Harris Award, an award which was instigated and named after Rotary International’s founder who organised the first ever Rotary meeting in Chicago in 1905.

Meon Valley Lions News
The fun never stopped this Summer! Carnivals and fetes provided great entertainment for all the family. Droxford Country Fair, Bishops Waltham Family Fun Day, Colden Common Fete, Swanmore Fete, Knowle Village Picnic in the Park, were just a few of the events the Meon Valley Lions’ BBQ and Games turned up to this summer. They helped provide a great day out whilst raising essential funds for those who need our help. It was so lovely to see so many people out enjoying themselves.
In particular the Swanmore Fete, where the Meon Valley Lions organise the whole show, was such a fantastic day, despite the downfall. From the dog show, to racing pigs, traditional fairground attractions, over 40 stall holders, storytelling for the little one, music all day, beer tent and of course the BBQ - what a day. And a massive thanks to the many helpers, without whom we just couldn’t put on the show.
Why not join us?
If you’d like to join our merry band of helpers or join us at Meon Valley Lions Club, drop us a line via our website: Meon Valley Lions Club (CIO) - Feedback welcome. It’s not all work, we have plenty of fun too organised by our social committee.

A Hint of Mint
As the seasons change, the vibrant colours of summer give way to the rich russet hues of autumn. Along the edges of our chalk streams, water mint plants are displaying their last splashes of pinkish purple. From July to October, this native plant brightens up riverbanks with its dense clusters of tiny flowers. Even in the colder months, you can still spot its square stems and oval, hairy, jagged-edged leaves.
Water mint is one of about 15 mint species that grow in the UK, although many of these are hybrids. Did you know, for example, that peppermint is a cross between water mint and spearmint –another of our native mint species? In fact, peppermint plants can sometimes be found growing in the wild near their parents.
As its name suggests, water mint loves to grow in damp places. It favours ponds, bog gardens, marshes, floodplain meadows, wet woodlands, and the margins of rivers. In an ideal habitat,
it can grow to over 50cm tall and spread sideways through rhizomes (thick stems that grow underground) and runners (thin stems that grow on or close to the ground).
Like other plants that grow in and around our chalk streams, water mint plays a key role in protecting the habitat. It offers shelter to animals that frequent the margins, like juvenile fish, small mammals, and emerging riverflies. Its root system helps to stabilise the bank and shield it from erosion, which saves fish eggs from being smothered by sediment. Its flowers provide nectar to peacock, comma, and small tortoiseshell butterflies, while its leaves are a favourite food of mint leaf and green tortoise beetles.
As with the kind you can buy from the supermarket (which is usually spearmint or peppermint), water mint has aromatic leaves that can be used to make flavourful drinks and meals. But it’s best not to use wild water mint for this purpose, because there may be pesticides, herbicides, or pollution in the area. Instead, see if you can safely get close enough to detect its bright
and refreshing scent – a real treat on an autumn walk!

Ally Chatterley, Operations Manager at Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on changes to the Winter Fuel Payment, and how to access it.
I’m a pensioner and am really worried about how I’m going to pay my energy bills this winter, especially now the Winter Fuel Payment is only going to people on certain benefits. I don’t currently receive any benefits, but my income is limited and I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do.
Previously the Winter Fuel Payment, which is worth up to £300, has been given to all pensioners regardless of income. However, this winter you’ll now only get the payment if you or your partner get certain benefits, including Pension Credit.
Pension Credit is one of the most underclaimed benefits there is – in Hampshire alone an estimated £2.5million of Pension Credit goes unclaimed each year. If you’re of pension age and on a low income, then it’s worth applying for Pension Credit even if you don’t receive any other benefits.
If your application for Pension Credit is successful, then as well as receiving a monthly boost to your income, you’ll also be able to access other support including making a claim for the Winter Fuel Payment.
You have until the 21 December to apply for Pension Credit and still receive the Winter Fuel Payment if successful. To find out more about the eligibility for Pension Credit and how to apply you can go to the national Citizens Advice website.

Changes to waste and recycling: cutting carbon, increasing recycling, improving efficiency.
Winchester City Council and their waste partner Biffa have undertaken a review of waste and recycling collection routes. As a result, from 7 October, there will be some changes to bin collections for residents, which could mean their bins are collected on different days.
The route changes coincide with the issue of the new bin calendar to every household across the district and are part of preparations for increasing recycling in the district, such as the introduction of a food waste collection. With 35,000 fewer miles needing to be driven each year the new routes are more efficient and cut carbon emissions.
Residents in the Winchester district will receive their new waste and recycling bin calendar through the post before the end of September, along with a letter highlighting any changes in their area.
Improving air quality across the district
Winchester City Council has a new strategy for improving air quality and they are asking for people across the district to have their say.
The strategy outlines an approach to improving air quality which, if agreed, will then be used as a basis for a detailed action plan to improve air quality across the district. It outlines the need to work collaboratively across the district and the wider region, to achieve cleaner air by 2030, making a commitment to go above and beyond UK national air quality targets.
The Winchester district is considered to be a green, clean and healthy part of the county but air quality is an invisible problem that can affect the health of residents. Policies which reduce air pollution will not only help
The new waste and recycling rounds start on 7 October and there is a one-week gap between the end of the existing bin calendar and the start of the new one. During that time, the existing calendar schedule will be extended, so residents should continue to put their bins out for collection as usual until 7 October.
In line with the council’s ambition of being a carbon neutral district by 2030 the new routes will include the council’s first fully electric waste and recycling vehicle. All existing vehicles have already been switched from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) – cutting emissions by up to 94%
Councillor Kelsie Learney, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said:
“We know that residents want to be able to recycle more and these changes ensure we can seamlessly introduce wider recycling collections in the future, including food waste recycling. At the same time, we are improving the efficiency of our service and cutting carbon emissions as we do so. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing our first fully electric waste and recycling vehicle on the road this autumn!”
Residents can view and download their collection schedule from w/c 30 September online at www.winchester.gov.uk/bincalendar.
There is also an FAQS section on the web page www.winchester.gov.uk/my-bins
to improve health, but also the environment. The new strategy has been developed in partnership with the Air Quality Steering Group which includes cross-party councillors, specialist council officers and representatives for public health, the business community and the local environmental lobby.
It outlines 13 actions under five key areas that should be considered to improve air quality across the district. The strategy aims to increase awareness of air pollution and its causes, as well as defining the council’s commitment to improve air quality and identifying air quality challenges across the district.
You can have your say at www.winchester. gov.uk/air-quality-strategy-survey
The surveys 'have your say' page closes on 27th October 2024, so don't miss out.

Surprised to find herself flat on her back, she looked sideways. Inches from her face, her terrier was sporting a similarly stunned expression in her fur trimmed, smoky eyes.
They’d been walking parallel to the river. Marshy, thickly populated with brambles and rotting fallen trees covered in moss. Scrambling over slippery logs and side-stepping thorny trip wires required stamina, agility and close quarter concentration.
So when the deer rose out of the ground where it had lain hidden and camouflaged in the brown, decaying detritus, she’d been unprepared. In its flight it struck her full in the chest, leapt gracefully over her dog and fled the scene, leaving her prone. The terrier was in disbelief; the nerve of that funny looking dog with the pointy feet and sticks on its head!
Years before, resting literally in the palm of her hand, she’d been the tiniest puppy when she was that best-of-all birthday present. Himself had bought a chicken coop and told her to look in the Land Rover for another gift. Expecting a chicken – well, you would, wouldn’t you – she was surprised to find a little scrap of excited, yapping fur.
‘Chicken’ didn’t quite cut it as a name, so they chose something fittingly cute and chirpy for the tiny creature. And she was extremely cute and terribly chirpy, but she was also a terrier… A Border-cross at that. With a bit of a volatile nature, she was often referred to as the ‘cross Border’.
To be fair, her wayward traits presented themselves early on and they should have been prepared from the get go. Her very first walk was going so well. Proud owner, tiny puppy, lots of compliments and charm. Until tiny puppy scented something more interesting in the form of two large dogs on the other side of the park, that is. She homed in on them. My, she was fast – like a blunt and furry missile.
Her proud owner, not so much. She scooped up the miscreant whilst panting and wheezing like an asthmatic accordion with the effort of running and yelling at the same time. The two large dogs and owner were, thankfully, amused at the tiny terrier who’d been telling them off and making a dreadful noise, something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And at a surprising volume for one so small.
The weeny Houdini once even disappeared from the rigorously ‘dog proofed’ garden for a whole day, returning triumphant and unrepentant with a cargo of a thousand ticks. Her mistress picked up her wriggling furry body and kissed her; so relieved she was back, and the dog so pleased to be back, that noone could be cross.
Yes, she admitted it without a shred of shame - that dog had her wrapped around her little claw. She was putty in her paws.
But the terrier would lie on her sick bed all day when her mistress was ill. A personal protection squad of one, snout towards the door she was ready to repel all hostiles. And when her mistress cradled her in her arms and kissed her soft ears, smelling faintly of elderflowers, the small dog would croon and half close her eyes with pleasure.
But the cross Border was also, it has to be said, ‘a bit of a worry’.
One sunny Autumn afternoon, the terrier was running through a narrow thicket as they walked alongside on the grassy riverbank. Himself, hearing the drone of an insect, commented that it was very late for wasps. When they reached the end of the wood they called their dog. And called. Eventually she tottered out of the trees, collapsing at their feet. Having presumably encountered the mother lode nest, the small, furry body was crawling with wasps.
Himself scooped up her limp and comatose little body. A mercy dash to the nearest vet, adrenaline shots and an oxygen tent – and the terrier was saved! Relieved tears all round. Reluctantly they left the prone and semi-conscious dog with the vets, who said she needed to overnight with them. However, they hadn’t long been home when the ‘phone rang.
“Hello?” In the background, she could hear the most awful noise. Hard to describe – something between a scream, a bark and a howl. And so loud. It sounded familiar… And cross.
“Hello.” Said the slightly stressed sounding voice at the other end. “Please can you come and collect your dog. We think she’s well enough to go home…”
But all things come to an end and eventually she lost her constant companion, her terrier. To use the word ‘lost’ is, of course, a flimsy euphemism - it makes it sound like she wandered off. Which actually was clearly a recurring theme throughout her 16 odd years.
But all too soon, the wet-nosed, furry vandal broke her heart and was gone, sauntering off and wagging her tail behind her…
