Happy Kitchens Happy Kitchens set to overcome this by slashing the price of their hand-made kitchens. They keep overheads to a minimum by avoiding the use of flashy showrooms and not charging hefty premiums for their brand. Ben tells us that this allows him to supply and fit a ÂŁ60,000 kitchen for well under half the price and still provide a perfect service.

Originally from Hayling Island in Hampshire, Ben did most of his growing up in Italy and has also spent a lot of time in Barcelona where he developed a keen eye for design. He now runs Happy Kitchens based in Swanmore, with offices in West Sussex and the Test Valley. He's had a successful career in kitchen design and has worked with some of the 'big names' in the UK kitchen industry. Happy Kitchens specialise in bespoke, high quality, made-to-measure kitchens and Ben wanted to offer top quality kitchens at the fraction of the cost, together with excellent customer service. He says: "There are a lot of customers who would use a high-street retailer to source their kitchen and find it difficult (if not impossible) to purchase the size and style they wanted to fit their space. The materials could also be low quality; for instance, rather than being real oak, it would be veneer." Ben is proud of the high quality 'British Made', hand-crafted kitchens they provide. He explains: "If someone wanted to buy a kitchen of our quality from the High Street it would be far too expensive. You will find in most cases that you are paying for the brand name, not the quality of the product."

4

Happy Kitchens ethos has always been to provide a complete kitchen solution for all its customers. Some customers may not have the financial resources to fit an entirely new kitchen that is why we offer a Kitchen Makeover service too. Over the years our expertise in this field has won us awards with Houzz. Careful attention is taken on the design to ensure our customers are left feeling that they have a brand new kitchen!

Before Makeover

After Makeover

Ben continues: "I think, our craftsmen are amongst the best in the world. They come from a luxury yacht fitting background. Fitting luxury yachts involves working to unusual layouts and specific customer requirements, whilst achieving a perfect finish. There is a world of difference between a craftsman and a kitchen fitter. A kitchen fitter can fit a kitchen, but as soon as there is a slight curve in the wall or something is not quite right with the room, problems begin. A craftsman can make something wonderful out of that situation, as opposed to being stopped by it." Quality, affordability and service are paramount to Ben, as shown by the fact that

his company won Best in Customer Service award for 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 from Houzz. His clients would describe Happy Kitchens as a company they can really work with, a company they get great quality from and a company with whom they get a great end result, without having to spend the earth. Dealing with Covid-19 Ben Says: "Our customers and our employees are of utmost importance to us and safety for all is our first concern. We are regularly reviewing and adhering to Government and NHS advice on how the virus can be managed and contained, and we have robust plans in place which we adapt to the latest Government advice as it changes and the situation continues to evolve. Our Coronavirus Planning is constantly examining how we can limit the impact of the virus within Restore and the service we are offering to our customers. We have put in place a series of steps and measures to keep our colleagues safe, and allowing us to continue to serve our customers. We are keeping our employees fully informed about steps to take for containment and management on our premises as well as during any customer or supplier site visits. We have implemented social distancing measures at all of our sited in line with Government guidelines. We have implemented increased hygiene measures at all of our sites and sourced relevant hygiene equipment and materials as recommended by Government guidelines. Any employee who is experiencing coronavirus symptoms, or is required to isolate under Government guidelines for any other reason, has been instructed not to attend work and to follow the latest Government advice on next steps. We are focused on working with our customers to establish these requirements. Please keep us updated on your requirements."

I found Happy Kitchens on Houzz, and I decided to go with them as the reviews were encouraging and I liked that they were a small, local company. From the outset, Ben was extremely professional and understands exactly what the client wants. The Happy Kitchen team were all fantastic; punctual, hardworking, incredibly tidy and most importantly they really cared about the quality of their work. We are really thrilled with our new kitchen and it has totally exceeded our expectations. Joanne McCarthy Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Since 2016, Winchester’s Heritage Open Days festival has grown to become an important event in the local calendar, with thousands of visitors attending the programme of events. This year, with the uncertainty surrounding when cultural events will be able to run once more following the Covid-19 Pandemic, it has become clear that the traditional format of the festival will not be possible in September. The focus this year will be digital. Commenting on the decision to focus on digital events this year, Festival Director Nicky Gottlieb said,

Winchester Heritage Open Days festival to go digital for 2020 The organisers of the Winchester Heritage Open Days festival are delighted to announce that this year's 2020 festival will be going ahead, with free events and local stories at its heart.

“We are enormously grateful to all our sponsors, supporters, volunteers and event organisers whohave helped the Festival grow to become the success that it is. I am sure that there will be people who look forward to the events every year and will be disappointed by our decision not to hold events in the usual way this year. However, it is important the festival is safe, is inclusive

and does not add further cost or burden to businesses and organisations who at this time are getting back on their feet. Whilst we hope one or two organisations may be able to hold some in-person events (in line with government guidance at the time of the festival), our focus will be on encouraging digital events. We do this with the expectation that this year’s festival will be smaller. We are working hard to plan for a digital festival this September, and this will include our very own podcast channel. We very much hope to welcome all our events and visitors back in the usual way in September 2021.” Further details on the programme for the 2020 Digital Heritage Open Days Festival and the launch of our podcast channel in August will be released in due course. I therefore call on the government to urgently review the precise details of these guidelines, so that TFT – and the thousands of theatres and arts venues across the country – can reopen to live audiences as soon as possible.”

Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre said, “Although the decision to allow theatres and cinemas to reopen is welcome, the restriction preventing any live performances until further notice is extremely disappointing.

week of an ozone sanitiser – and so far, we are the only theatre in the UK to have one. This will sanitise all auditoria, public spaces and stage areas, killing 'all known germs' bugs and viruses including Covid19. It will be applied after every show after audiences and cast have left the building and ensure that the building is completely sanitised and safe. We will also have thermal imaging on entry to the venue and hand sanitising stations. All of our venues will continue to operate with the safer 2 metres social distancing and 6 metres distancing from the stage to audience when musicals are on. This is on top of the increased cleaning and sanitising regime we have put in place.

“In recent weeks we have been pressing ahead with plans to reopen, safely and keeping the interests of our patrons and our members to the fore. We took delivery this

“Furthermore, we have invested in over £60,000 worth of camera, sound and vision mixing equipment so we can stream our shows live and to begin with, will be FREE

We are ready to reopen The Prime Minister has just announced changes to the government’s policy on the coronavirus lockdown. The new guidelines will allow theatres to reopen on July 4 and there is a relaxing of the two-metre rule to one metres – however there can be no live performances for the current time.

South Downs National Park introduces inspiring scheme to connect families with nature John Muir Trust to run the prestigious internationally-recognised environmental award, which is focused on connecting with and caring for wild places. The activities programme is fully adaptable for each family’s circumstances, whether they are shielding vulnerable family members, have access to green space or not, or going to work or school. All people have to do over the next few months is 25 hours or more of fun activities which help them discover, explore and do something to care for a wild place, and then share the experience with others. Those who sign up will be sent regular ‘ideas’ newsletters that will be full to the brim with activities to choose from.

Example activities include:

An exciting new initiative has launched to help connect families with the joys of nature through fun learning activities. Inspired by the “founding father” of the National Park movement, John Muir, the South Downs National Park is announcing a new scheme that will help families learn more about the amazing natural environment. Whether at home, in the local park, or in the area of the National Park near where they live, families will be able to do a range of nature-based activities and work their way towards a Family John Muir Award. The South Downs National Park Authority has teamed up with conservation charity

8

• Building a “bug” hotel in your garden. • Growing something you can eat on your windowsill at home. • Watching a wildlife video about the National Park. • Going for a walk in the local park and surveying birds and other wildlife seen en-route. • Nature-based craft activities such as making a wild snake bookmark. • Finding how many different shaped leaves there are in your local green space. • Sharing your discoveries with others by text, film, over the phone, or through social media. Siân Jones, Families Outreach Officer for the South Downs National Park, said: “We’re really pleased to be launching this new initiative which will inspire people of all ages to connect with nature and take a more active role in caring for it. “Along the way families will also discover more about the legendary John Muir and explore the wonders of the South Downs National Park – whether that be immersing

themselves in its natural splendour or from the comfort of their homes. The beauty of this awards programme is its flexibility. So your wild place might be a window box, your garden, the tree outside your window, the plants that grow through the cracks in the paving stones, or the park around the corner. This is the opportunity to get to know more about the wildlife that is right on people’s doorsteps.” Families who complete the 25 hours of activities will receive a special certificate to recognise their achievement. The initiative is being supported by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity of the National Park. The award can be completed indoors or outdoors and participants should follow the advice of “restraint, responsibility and respect” on enjoying the National Park safely: www.southdowns.gov.uk/nationalpark-authority/our-work/coronaviruscovid-19-update/

His passion for wild places led to a life-long quest to protect them and his work helped people understand the importance of wildness. His activism saved Yosemite Valley in California and helped create the world’s first national park system. His legacy lives on today in the John Muir Award, which is run by the conservation charity the John Muir Trust. For more information see www.johnmuirtrust.org

and having been involved in event floristry for over twenty years, Susanna decided to go back to her roots and open a flower stall, selling predominantly local and home grown flowers.

usanna opened her flower stall, Flowers by the Bridge, five years ago this month.

Situated on the A32 in West Meon, many people will have seen her pale blue A boards, parasol and bench of flowers as they drive through the village. Originally starting her floristry career by opening a flower shop in Pimlico, London

her abundant garden and allotment from early spring to late autumn. Asked how she is planning to celebrate her five years on the stall Susanna said “I have lots ideas including the ‘lonely bouquet’ which is when a bunch of flowers will be left somewhere, like a foot path or a park bench, to be found by a passer by, or jam jars could be given away to nominated recipients.”

If you are looking for a small gift, you will find an old wooden step ladder arranged with an assortment of little tins and jam jars filled with flowers. An ideal gift to take to garden drinks or an alfresco supper and cheaper than a bottle of wine!

She continues by saying “I am so grateful to every single person who has stopped by the stall and supported me by buying my flowers, particularly recently. I never expected my stall to be so popular and I have loved meeting so many different people, hearing their stories about where the flowers are going and catching up with people’s news.”

The stall is open all day Thursday, Friday and on Saturdays until 1pm. However local deliveries and orders can be placed anytime, with Susanna having access to

The exceptional levels of activity since restrictions have been lifted give a positive indication the next few months will continue to see a rise in transactions for both sales and lettings. The release of pent up demand has created a surge of activity in a market that has been passive for too long. The South of England provides the perfect environment for commuters and those looking for a change of lifestyle, our excellent road and rail links mean easy access to the capital and other cities with planes and boats making the continent as easily accessible. Many of us have had to adapt to working from home during lockdown and these local links will influence the demand in our area for the coming weeks and months. Whilst the housing market is clearly influenced by the wider economy, interest rates remain low and the instability of the stock markets is tempting investors back to the property market. This, combined with a change in choices, means that for now the market has confidence and will continue to be active. So, over the next few months at The Country House Company we will be doing our bit to safely #keepthecountrymoving. If we can help, we look forward to hearing from you. Kate Porter,

A place in the country

Over the last few months, the lure of country living has become stronger and when it comes to idyllic countryside, the Meon Valley is in a class of its own.

One of the Meon Valley’s greatest assets is being part of the South Downs National Park, which covers more than 600 square miles of stunning English landscape, historic market towns and unspoilt villages. One of these is Droxford, where Kebbell have built just eight luxurious 3 and 4 bedroom homes in an exclusive little enclave in an undeniably rural setting. Kebbell has chosen this location to appeal particularly to those who love the outdoor life. Step outside The Courtyard’s private gateway, and the vast National Park is yours to explore in any number of ways. Enthusiastic walkers, horse riders and cyclists have a number of routes to follow, including the long distance Wayfarer’s Walk and the Monarch’s Way. Historic references and natural points of interest mark every mile, and the views are sublime whatever the season.

Another footpath is The Meon Valley Trail, which passes very close to Droxford and runs from the village of West Meon down to Wickham, with its very large market square. The 11-mile trail used to be a railway, so it’s reasonably level, making it ideal if you don’t want something too strenuous. There are even gentler pastimes to enjoy close to Droxford itself. A quiet stroll along the banks of the chalk stream waters of the Meon, followed by lunch in one of the local pubs such as The Baker’s Arms or The White Horse Inn is probably one of the nicest ways to spend Saturday or Sunday. And if that’s just a little too undemanding, you could always fit in a round of golf or a game of tennis at one of Droxford’s local clubs as well.

The quality of the outdoor space is unquestioned and the interiors of the homes at The Courtyard reflect this. Kebbell are always thinking hard about how people are really going to live in their homes. So at The Courtyard, every home has a spacious, beautifully planned and stylishly furnished open plan kitchen/family area with direct access to the garden. Incidentally, the gardens are of larger than average size too – here, outdoor living starts at home. There’s a separate living room too, and it goes without saying that every master bedroom has en suite facilities. The houses have a great deal of traditional, red brick charm externally, and are positioned to make the most of the views over the surrounding countryside. Kitchens are classic Shaker style

with composite stone worktops; so right for this country village setting. There are oak cottage style internal doors, and Villeroy & Boch bathrooms with wall hung vanity units. Another Kebbell touch, something which is now standard in all of their homes, is underfloor heating throughout the whole ground floor. We’re all hankering after a little more personal space nowadays, and at The Courtyard you’ll find plenty, whether you’re relaxing in the family room, pottering in the garden or setting out to explore the National Park that is, quite literally, on your doorstep. For more information about The Courtyard or to book a viewing of the show home visit the website or contact Pearsons.

WELLBEING / COMMUNITY Lapis Care - Home Care Provider & Consultancy Service On average people spend around 20 hours a week caring for a vulnerable family member, spending time with elderly relatives that may need extra help doing everyday things or even socialising with family living alone. During the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, this has become increasingly difficult as we are no longer able to spend this quality time with each other. This can be an exceedingly difficult time for everyone. The government has advised that if you are providing personal care for someone, these visits are still permitted, although should be kept to a minimum and to wear personal protective equipment. Any surfaces or household items that you come into contact with should also be disinfected. Alternatively, if you can avoid going into someone's home, then you should. Dropping off food or essentials to the door and conversations at a distance. If you are able to, you are also now allowed to meet in an open space and socialise, keeping a safe (2m) distance between you. Why not take advantage of regular phone calls or even video chats!

Most importantly, before and after visiting anyone outside of your home, please wash your hands and/or use 70% alcohol based hand sanitiser. Staying positive is our main focus. We are all in this together and we will all get through this together. Lapis Care are committed to providing physical and mental wellbeing, we are regularly checking up on clients, especially living alone and also visiting previous clients just to ensure they are safe, well and have everything they may need. In this uncertain time need to focus on what makes us happy and appreciate the little things. We want to encourage everyone to look out for each other, here are a few ideas of how to show someone you are there!

Show your kindness: • Call your friends, especially if you haven't spoke for a while • Tell your family how much you appreciate them • Help each other around the house, cooking, chores or even just making a cup of tea • Arrange a video call with your friends/family • Send a motivational text to someone who is struggling • Send someone a joke or a cute animal picture to brighten their day • Contact your colleagues, there in the same boat as you • Spend quality time with your pets • Donate to a charity or food bank • Send someone a food package of treats • Check on your neighbours Check out these website links below for how to easily create your own facemasks at home, try it for yourself or a friend. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk52609777 https://www.healthline.com/health/howto-make-a-mask-out-of-fabric#materialsneeded

Bishops Waltham House The Meon Valley Lions Club had a request from the State run care home with 22 bedrooms, in Free Street, Bishops Waltham. As their gardens were looking a little sad, to help brighten up the gardens we donated planters to cheer up residents.

Lions in lockdown Despite being in lockdown the Lions have continued to support the local community and still continue with the day to day business of the Club. 1st June saw a ‘zoom lockdown’ version of our annual Presidential handover to our incoming President Eddy Barringer. True to form the Lions still managed to celebrate in a zoom meeting. The Club would like to thank Andrew Brown for holding the reigns over what has been a very difficult time. MVLC Zoom changeover meeting Supporting the local community With a Home Schooling in full swing families have been rushing to stock up on printers to help educate children at home. Meon Valley Lions Club was pleased to help a family who didn’t have facility to print at home, with school work having to

be delivered by a Homestart volunteer. No excuses for late homework now!! The Foodbanks continue to provide essential supplies to many families in the Meon Valley. The generosity of our communities means this help can be delivered every week and of course, thanks to the volunteers of the Meon Valley Food Bank and the Waltham Chase Methodist Food Bank. www.meonvalleyfoodbank.co.uk/donate www.chasemethodist.org/churchlife.html

Future events Sadly, as with other public events the 2020 Swanmore Fete has been cancelled but we’re looking at other fundraising events that we might be able to hold once we are out of lockdown. We’ll keep you updated on our website but in the meantime please add next year’s Swanmore Fete to your diary: Saturday 12th July 2021.

We need help During the lock down all of the Lunch Clubs we regularly take people to in our minibus have closed. Also, all of the fetes and other fund-raising events we were to attend have been cancelled. But as soon as things can be relaxed, we are ready to go! After the lockdown if you are able to help by driving our minibus, or indeed would like to join the Club, we’d love to hear from you. Meet the new headmaster of St Swithun’s prep school, Winchester

Jonathan Brough is joining St Swithun’s in September after ten years leading Hurlingham School in Putney and a further six as head of prep at City of London School for Girls. He has also been an educational journalist, computer coder and a schools’ inspector Jonathan was interviewed by Jane Gandee, head of St Swithun’s senior school. Their conversations can be viewed in full on the school website. What do you think are the characteristics of best practice primary education? Primary schools should ensure that all children develop enduring passions

24

for learning, for literature and for life itself: that’s the fundamental purpose of education today. Pupils must, therefore, never merely be taught as a box ticking exercise, governed by learning objectives in a shallow and impoverished, one-size-fitsall model. Instead, best practice involves them becoming truly educated in a manner that introduces them to the widest possible range of activities and celebrates their own unique individuality, as well as the beautiful diversity within their community, as they explore and foster their own interests, talents and skills. Every day must be an adventure and every lesson must contain something new. Life’s adventure is best embraced with courage and enthusiasm! What are you looking forward to most about joining St Swithun’s? St Swithun’s is a cutting-edge prep school with a fantastic community of pupils, parents and staff: there are so many opportunities just waiting to be enjoyed, both within the new school buildings and outside in the wonderful 45 acres of grounds. At St Swithun’s, children develop the awe, wonder and creativity that enable them all to make their studies and passions truly their own. It’s the higher order thinking skills and competencies, encouraging

children never to be satisfied with the obvious but to look deeper into things – to ask why – that develop the enquiring minds which, in the future, are going to open the locked doors for which science hasn’t yet given us the key. I’m also looking forward to working in a girls’ school again. Girls do learn differently; in a co-educational setting there’s always a danger that they’ll be held back by the comparative immaturity of boys, so it can often be much easier for them to reach for the stars in a single sex educational environment. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? I’m a great believer in bibliotherapy for everyone, adults and children alike: when I want to unwind, there’s nothing better than a piece of gripping fiction! One of my recent favourites is Orphan Island by the American writer Laurel Snyder; it’s the perfect text for anyone approaching changes in their life! I am currently recommending Kind, an illustrated children’s book by a collection of authors and illustrators, wherever I go. As human beings we need to be kind to each other- and, if we get that right, we won’t ever go far wrong with anything else that we do.

Not New Now and Not Normal

© Lucia Foster-Found 2020 www.luciafosterfound.com

She felt something of a failure. Not for her a daily Joe Wicks workout. Nor had she learned a new language, written a novel or redecorated her house. Not one single cute video of her dancing with her husband or dogs was going viral on Tik Tok. The novelty of Zoom meetings had worn off after a week or two, along with workmates’ initial relief and curiosity that everyone was well. It seemed she’d done more virtual gatherings in the first fortnight than she had in the following ten. Houseparty was fun for a while, but her habitual family video calls had slipped back as before into Whatsapp and Messenger. Almost as if nothing had changed. And maybe that was why. The stars had shone more brightly, the sky was chem-trail free. The poor, abused planet was having a short respite – on her daily walk she’d watched a deer wander fearlessly down the middle of a road devoid of traffic. But daily death tolls and pictures of exhausted NHS workers bruised by hours in PPE made her cry. And whilst the world was distracted, poaching on game reserves and the rape of the rainforests increased. Her days had quickly slipped into a routine. A new normal encased her, but very soon it felt not new. And it was not normal. It wasn’t working from home so much as being at home trying to work. But she was grateful she had a job and a role that she could fulfil remotely, from the safety of her house. Not entirely sure if she was lucky not to have the distraction of young children and the additional burden of home schooling. On reflection she was saddened because her brood were all grown and not around to photo-bomb her video calls. Initial terror that she would catch ‘it’ from the post had waned. The Olive and Mabel Labrador video

26

commentaries made her laugh. Although she’d been a bit concerned in those early days that she’d run out of food. A good sort out through her cupboards and freezer had seen the creation of some interesting meals from stuff past its ‘best before’ dates – and nobody got sick. Supermarket delivery slots being the stuff of myth and legend, the small independent shops and suppliers became local heroes. And that was when the baking had started; the peach upside down cakes and lemon drizzles, the spiced tea loaf and even some bread rolls – not an unqualified success, what with the lack of strong white bread flour. To call them heavy was a kindness. Himself had described it as ‘elven Lembas bread’, convinced that a man could march for a whole day after eating just one. Bless him for binge watching all that Lord of the Rings with her. Nothing she cooked was remotely slimming. There was the delicious beer batter for the fish and chips that she had missed so much. But the chips.. not chip shoppie enough somehow. Home made tartare sauce was a bit of a revelation though and the fish cakes with melting cheese centres were yum. A pastry-athon to the backdrop of an entire season of Death in Paradise on Netflix, had populated the freezer with sausage rolls, pasties and quiche. Comfort, comfort, comfort. Thank goodness for the exercise bike, because just going out once to walk the dogs was not enough to burn off all those lockdown calories. Her tomato plant plugs ‘by post’ were sad and near death when delivered. A week in transit, during the late frosts had done them in. But then the garden centres re-opened. A tiny bit of normality returned (although runner bean plants were like hen’s teeth apparently). Compost

purchased brought joy. Packets of seeds, excitement. Lockdown eased a tiny bit more and she saw her UK-based daughter in the flesh for the first time since January, albeit from two metres away. It was so good to see her, but her arms ached to hug and to hold. They had a bring-your-own picnic and together apart they chatted. As they walked, their dogs played, chasing and rolling about – the canine world was blissfully untroubled by social distancing and no-one was going to report them on 101. But the littering by day trippers to parks and beaches made her angry – and the thoughtlessness of people barbecuing in the tinder dry forests made her despair. She wondered about the harsh lessons learned and the enormous changes wrought by the pandemic. What would they, the lessons and the changes, ultimately, at some final reckoning, at some future time, on balance, result in? A brave new world; kinder, cashless, greener, cleaner? One where we respect the planet and all of the creatures unfortunate enough to share it with us? One in which key workers, at least, get paid more, instead of clapped for? But a line popped into and kept on running through her head – she couldn’t remember where she’d heard it. It bothered her so much, she felt compelled to Google it. “Then we’re stupid and we’ll die.” Turns out it was from a film about a dystopian future.

COMMUNITY encourage people to support their local producers at a time when they need it most.”

Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. County food group Hampshire Fare is launching a major new campaign supporting local producers and independent retailers as lockdown eases. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, explains: “This campaign is a rallying cry! It is a celebration of the brilliant service people have received from independent retailers and local producers during lockdown. More importantly, however, the objective of our campaign is to ask: why should that experience of going into a local store, being looked after, receiving personal service, perhaps being provided with home delivery, end with lockdown easing?”

Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “This coronavirus outbreak has shown us how we can live differently. Local food shops and suppliers stepped up immediately when the Government asked us to stay at home as much as possible, playing an enormous role in helping us keep our cupboards stocked when we needed to reduce our travel and stay safe.

artwork designs to be used in shop windows and across online and print media that champion the individuals behind Hampshire’s local independents. Tracy Nash continues: “During lockdown we have seen local producers and independents come up with ingenious ways to service their communities. Some set up online shopping facilities and provided click and collect or home delivery services. Others have diversified, setting up new box schemes. This campaign recognises their efforts – stepping in when supermarkets struggled with supply chains and deliveries. The Campaign is being supported by Hampshire County Council and Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (EM3) through funding from EM3’s Economic Recovery Plan to support the area’s long-term vitality.

Hampshire Fare’s Stay Loyal Stay Local campaign is about reminding and encouraging people to stay loyal to those relationships they have formed with local independents, producers and suppliers over the past ten weeks. Key to the campaign are

Kathy Slack, Chief Executive, EM3, comments: “I am delighted EM3 could support Hampshire Fare in this fantastic campaign. Loyal, local customers are the backbone of any rural food business and I’m sure this simple but powerful message will

“We are now at a turning point as restrictions on our travel start to ease, and we are in a position to make choices about how we want our future to look. I’m delighted the County Council is able to support this initiative to support Hampshire’s economic recovery from the pandemic, and would urge people to keep hold of some of the positive lifestyle changes we’ve had to make in the last few months and continue to use local shops, supporting local producers and suppliers.” The first phase of the campaign will encompass local producers and small independent retailers who have been operating throughout lockdown. The second phase will support the return of the hospitality sector. Tracy Nash adds: “We want to sing out about all the good work that has been achieved so that people will stay loyal and others will consider using local as well. Our farmers, local producers and small independents are the lifeblood of this county. They helped their communities and through this campaign we are empowering them to ask their communities for support in return. They are going to need all the support they can get. We are simply asking - Stay Loyal Stay Local.”

More importantly, however, the objective of our campaign is to ask: why should that experience of going into a local store, being looked after, receiving personal service, perhaps being provided with home delivery, end with lockdown easing?” Hampshire Fare’s Stay Loyal Stay Local campaign is about reminding and encouraging people to stay loyal to those relationships they have formed with local independents, producers and suppliers over the past ten weeks. Key to the campaign are artwork designs to be used in shop windows and across online and print media that champion the individuals behind Hampshire’s local independents. Tracy Nash continues: “During lockdown we have seen local producers and independents come up with ingenious ways to service their communities. Some set up online shopping facilities and provided click and collect or home delivery services. Others have diversified, setting up new box schemes. This

President Mike Hurley takes the reins Changeover is an unusual title but, in Rotary, that has come to mean the annual thanks for the work of our previous President in the Rotary Club of Fareham over the past year and to welcome the incoming President and hear their plans. Outgoing President Michael Cleaves has now completed his term of office and led the way in the Club for local and national fundraising. Now it is time for PRESIDENT MIKE HURLEY to take over from 1st July as President for his year of service with the Club in 2020-2021. As President Mike Hurley says “I have chosen the Rotary Foundation Charity for my Presidential year which has helped thousands of people across the world. They positively change lives with humanitarian projects, vocational training and Rotary scholarships.

Ranging from small to large charities, the Rotary Foundation supports over 1,000 projects a year and the Rotary Club of Fareham aims, by way of its activities, to support what they do. Additionally, President Mike intends to initiate local projects to support the environment.” Since the start of Coronavirus in the UK our Club Council and all Rotarians have been making, and adapting, plans for fundraising and service to achieve as much as possible at this challenging time. In particular the Rotary Club of Fareham has given support to the Purple Community Fund in the Philippines (PCF) to help families living and working in the rubbish dumps of Manila. More locally we have donated funds for Team Scrubbers making scrubs for the NHS. We don’t yet know when we can get together again but we meet on-line every week and enjoy fellowship and make plans to carry out our charity and community endeavours in the different ways that are needed these days.

Winchester City Council cuts carbon emissions by a fifth as part of ambitious Climate Emergency plans Winchester City Council has reduced its carbon emissions by almost a fifth by switching to a green energy supply, as part of its ambitious plans to tackle climate change.

to feed back energy into the grid if excess power is generated. Ahead of World Environment Day, the council has also announced it will work with five Parish Councils to join up to the ‘Greening Campaign’ – this will help local communities to identify ways that residents can come together to cut carbon emissions at a grassroots level. The areas will help to test ideas that could then be introduced across the district.

One year on from declaring a Climate Emergency, the council has provided an update on progress towards its goal to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2024 – and a carbon neutral district by 2030. This follows the council issuing a comprehensive action plan in December last year to meet these ambitious targets.

Additional work to deliver a carbon neutral district by 2030 includes developing a new Local Plan to guide low carbon development over the next decade and beyond, and progressing the Movement Strategy in partnership with Hampshire County Council to provide low carbon travel options.

Achievements include switching the energy supply of the civic buildings to a green tariff in April – a year earlier than initially planned - which will going forward reduce the council’s carbon emissions by almost a fifth (19 per cent) annually – equating to a reduction of around 770 tonnes of CO2e saved.

Cabinet Lead, Cllr Paula Ferguson, said: “When we declared a Climate Emergency a year ago, we meant it and I’m proud of the work we’ve done to reduce the council’s carbon emissions and those of the district during the last year.

Plans to further cut building emissions across the district include promoting the use of renewable energy. The latest example is installing top of the range solar panels on the Winchester Sport & Leisure Centre – part of a package of measures that will make the building one of the greenest of its kind in the UK. The panels on the new leisure building will include 849 square meters of photovoltaic panels that can generate at least 140,000 kilowatts of green energy a year. The system is also able

“We’ve recently cut the council’s carbon emissions by nearly a fifth by switching to renewable energy for all council property, committed to spending £10m over the next decade to retrofit our housing stock to make it more energy and water efficient, started work on a new ‘Park and Stride’ at Bar End, agreed a network of electric vehicle charging points across the district, and planted over 500 trees. “Supporting local people through the COVID-19 outbreak has had to be our primary focus recently, but it also presents

great opportunities to recover in a low carbon way. One way we are doing this is working with Hampshire County Council to accelerate the delivery of sociallydistanced walking and cycling options, and we want to support businesses to recover in a more sustainable way such as increasing the use of technology. “Tackling COVID-19 challenges continues to be our immediate focus, but the climate emergency remains a critical priority. We’ve made good progress over the last 12 months, setting ambitious targets on carbon reduction and taking action to make this happen. We can all help on this journey to improve our quality of life now, and for future generations. The positive changes to how we live our lives made recently prove what can be achieved and we're keen to drive forward ways to get more people from across the district involved in our ambitious carbon reduction work over the coming months.”

Carbon reduction programme highlights includes:

• A comprehensive Carbon Neutrality Reduction Plan – https://www. winchester.gov.uk/climate-change-and energy/climate-emergency-what-we are-doing-now/carbon-neutrality action-plan • Green electricity supplied for city council’s operational buildings • A plan to install 32 electric charge points across the district including ‘fast’ chargers • Park & Ride expansion at east Winchester Bar End later this year • Solar panels installed at Winchester Sport and Leisure Centre and at the city council’s depot in Winnall • 500+ trees planted in 2019-20 including community planting events • Developing a Biodiversity Action Plan including the creation of new wildflower areas • A Climate Emergency conference planned for later this year – to mobilise people together across the district including a Schools Climate Parliament to engage young people • Introduction of a new household glass recycling service from September 2019 • Changes to parking and access to our towns and villages to improve air quality

Just in time for Summer We are back! There's a bit more life on the streets and grabbing a coffee is no longer a distant memory judging by the long queues outside our lovely local coffee shop. Life is beginning, very slowly, to feel a little bit more like 'normal'. And with it new beginnings and new projects can start, and here at Pat Staples Interiors we are ready to embrace it.

Recently our homes have become our sanctuary – a safe place for us to feel comfort and protection, a space from which to virtually connect with family and friends, to develop new skills or rediscover past hobbies. Our homes have also turned into versatile spaces with many of us working from home, and of course the all-important virtual classroom for our children. Spending more time at home has given us the perfect opportunity to better understand our habits and requirements, and how we ideally want our home to function and importantly to look in the future months and years. Now is the perfect time to start planning a refreshing update, which could involve just recovering an old chair, or maybe starting from scratch on a whole new scheme for a room. We would love to help you unlock the potential of your living environment, however big or small your project. With this is mind Pat Staples Interiors is offering free top quality curtain lining on all made to measure curtain and blind orders, in July and August. Please note our studio will be open for private appointments only. We will offer our clients a chance to meet virtually with our interior designers to chat about your plans and get some inspiration. We will be offering socially distanced home visits and

on site measuring where needed. Our fitters will take the necessary precautions when fitting your floorcoverings and curtaining. We will work with your existing schemes and ideas to suggest the perfect fabrics and colours. So let's start chatting and get the ball rolling.
